  1. Although in a lot of ways narrow-minded nationalism has been responsible for most of the world's wars... I have no great love for Patriotism or Nationalism, I view it with suspicion at best.. There's a fine line between maintaining a national identity and the sort of parochial, ignorant, narrow-minded "nationalism" that led to the genocide in the former Yugoslavia....

I think I agree with Oscar Wilde to be honest - "patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel".... Look at Thatcher wrapping herself in the Union Jack and all that Falklands sh!te to get the Tories a second term in '83 as an example mate..... -_-

im not really talking about nationalism though.... im talking about culture , traditions, the very things that make us all different and interesting.

  2. I think fans of rock music in 1981 would take exception to anyone calling Kim Wilde rock though. That's just where the zeitgeist was at - punk music had crossed over and pop music had taken a cue from it. In the same way that we have arguments over whether The Hoosiers are indie today.

I'd say Kim Wilde's sound was to 1981 what Girls Aloud's sound is today. Not bubblegum, but still very much pop.

spot on.... and a very good comparison too :)

  3. But I agree with Mushy with the Liam storyline, I mean, yes there's a certain amount of unbelieveability in Shameless but come on. Such a bad plot. The McGuire lads have come into their own this series, I think they're great.

thats the point... good comedy has to be believeable, bizarre but believeable. the more bizarre the better, but that little kid knowing how to rob cars and drive them is utter nonsense.

  4. ya the mc guirers have def come into there own in series 5 its like they are the main family now, which is good as they are great, all the charactors in shameless are great i think and frank funnily enough is my leasst fave

    drunk?...lol

yeah... frank isnt funny, but drunks arnt... and what drunk has teeth THAT white?... but yes the mc guire boys are improving their characters

  5. Spot on.. The relative ease of world travel, the opening of European borders is making it a lot less problematic for people to come and go now.. I for one welcome the fact that we are all now pretty much "citizens of the world" as opposed to being closed behind our borders...

    maybe, maybe not...

im not in favour of 'one nation' as i believe national identity is important for ALL nations. if we become 'one nation' this will be lost over time.

  6. Eh I don't think Kim Wilde was a pop artists until her 86' album "Another Step" her albums previous to that were very more rock driven with a mix of a little pop...

you have unwittingly highlighted my point!

'pop' wasnt invented as a genre by watertwat in the mid 80's... it had been the label of choice for over 25 years and encompassed a wide variety of sounds.

'rock' isnt the use of guitars and volume in a track... since merseybeat in 63-4 electric guitars were the staple instrument in pop songs, kim wilde has done NOTHING that can be considered 'rock'.

i blame watertwat for the confusion in todays music world. his pwl sound was sold to a new generation of (post punk) kids and guitar pop was out of fashion. from the late 80's until the early 00's guitar pop (britpop for eg) was largely seen as 'indie' whilst 'pop' refered to watertwats production line bollox. when BUSTED, yes busted! formed and made guitar pop, pop groups, fashionable again amongst the young did the confusion become apparent. busted were a good old fashioned pop group... like the kinks, beatles, stones, slade, trex, sweet, etc etc.. THEY were always refered to as POP GROUPS, not rock. kim wilde has yet to do anything that heavy.

busted, mc fly, werent rock, they may have mimicked rock manerisms but so have pop groups throughout history! they were pop... watertwats 'music' wasnt pop...it was c**p. music at its lowest level.

  7. lol...

    ok

kim wilde was pop, nothing more. i guess that in todays terminology the true meaning of rock and pop are somewhat blurred. 'pop' seems to mean cheesy lightweight nonsense and guitar groups are rock or indie... truth is by retro standards its all pop... pop groups... rock was always much heavier.

  8. Wooooah dude. Chillout. This song is a classic and while the words are maybe derogatory towards women, they are nothing compared to some of the lyrics today. -_-

but the idea of this thread was to rubbish lyrics of retro songs, it aint about comparisons, its about seeing the absurdity of the material/situation used. its not about wether the track is good/bad or indifferent, its purely about the lyrics.

  9. looks like its fans have even given up trying to convince themselves that its still any good!

them mc guire boys are developing well though, pity last nights storyline was ruined by having the utterly riddiculous notion that little liam was a master car theif... thats the most idiotic, unrealistic, unfeasible, STUPID idea the show has ever produced.

  10. good to see 'perdy' getting what she deserves.... shes a horrible, unattractive character . shes also one of the most unattractive women ive ever seen on screen, in fact... is 'she' really a 'she'?...
  11. Posted

i hate this song! ...lol.. it might be a classic rock n roll standard but the subject matter is horrible!

Oh well I'm the type of guy who will never settle down

Where pretty girls are, well you know that I'm around

I kiss 'em and I love 'em 'cause to me they're all the same

I hug 'em and I squeeze 'em, they don't even know my name

They call me the wanderer - yeah - the wanderer

I roam around around around around

Oh well there's Flo on my left arm and there's Mary on my right

And Janie is the girl well that I'll be with tonight

And when she asks me which one I love the best

I tear open my shirt and show her Rosie on my chest

    'Cause I'm a wanderer - yeah - a wanderer

I roam around around around around

Oh well I roam from town to town

I go through life without a care

    [ Lyrics found at www.mp3lyrics.org/lJ ]

And I'm as happy as a clown

With my two fists of iron, but I'm going nowhere

Oh, I'm the type of guy that likes to roam around

I'm never in one place, I roam from town to town

And when I find myself fallin' for some girl

Yeah, I hop right into that car of mine, I drive around the world

    Yeah I'm a wanderer, yeah a wanderer

I roam around around around around

    Lettin' go

Oh yeah, I'm the type of guy that likes to roam around

I'm never in one place, I roam from town to town

And when I find myself a-fallin' for some girl

I hop right into that car of mine, drive around the world

    'Cause I'm a wanderer, yeah a wanderer

I roam around around around around around around

    'Cause I'm a wanderer, yeah a wanderer

I roam around around around around around around around

    'Cause I'm a wanderer ....

  12. Here are the lyrics if you secretly want a sing-along to it:

    Tired of drifting, searching, shifting

    From town to town

Every time I slip and slide

    A little further down

I can't blame you if you won't take me back

After everything I put you through

But Honey you're my last hope

And who else can I turn to

Come on Silver Lady take my word

I won't run out on you again

    Believe me

    Oh I've seen the light

It's just one long fight, without you

Here I am a million miles from home

The Indiana wind and rain cut through me

    I'm lost and alone

    Chilled to the bone

    Silver Lady

    Double talkers, backstreet walkers

    At every turn

Seedy motels and no star hotels

    Still I had to learn

That the one shining thing in my life

Was the sweet love I had with you

And Honey, you're my last hope

And who else can I turn to

Come on Silver Lady take my word

I won't run out on you again

    Believe me

    Oh I've seen the light

It's just one long fight, without you

Here I am a million miles from home

The Indiana wind and rain cut through me

    I'm lost and alone

    Chilled to the bone

    Silver Lady

Can't you find it in you to forgive me

Coz here I am a million miles from home

The Indiana wind and rain cut through me

    I'm lost and alone

    Chilled to the bone

    Silver Lady

Come on Silver Lady take my word

I won't run out on you again

    Believe me

    Oh I've seen the light

It's just one long fight, without you

The reggae / ragga hits of 93 / 94 - all I can think of is Shaggy, Big Mountain, Chaka Demus & Pliers, Pato Banton, Bitty McClean and Inner Circle.

maybe they were bigger on airplay then actual chart position.... i dunno, i wasnt interested in modern music in them days as there wasnt much to interest me until the britpop explosion brought 'mod' back :)

my fav at that time was the occassional dance track... prodigy, jam n spoon, felix, utah saints...
