im fully with norma regarding eastenders being unfunny. its got nothing to do with whether im liking the current storylines or not, nor having an open mind. real comedy makes you laugh, it catches you and makes you laugh whether you want to or not. emmerdale consistently does this with their almost pardody characters acting slightly ott. viv windsor, nicola, val, all deliver very sharp one liners that youd miss if you blinked. many times ive laughed out loud at a line from emmerdale ... a show i watch for the storylines not as a comedy. THATS why emmerdale pisses all over the others (and even 'comedy' dramas like shameless). i have NEVER laughed involuntary at eastenders the way i have at emmerdale. i love parody comedy, i love one liners, i love satire, i only find traces of these qualities in emmerdale.

the argies were not bothered about those desolate islands until there was a possibility of oil there. we populated them for many years and the argies just sat back and let it happen. now the falklands have been settled by brits, they are british. if the argies wanted those islands then they should have stopped the initial colonisation, and theyd still stay quiet even now if there was no oil.

personally i fully agree with your point regarding the simularities between nirvana and the doors, i never 'got' the doors either which as a 60's-phile i should have. imho i agree that both are well overrated and hold some un-earned cult like status. no no no m8, that isnt the point. of course we should be listening to any music that grabs us, that we can relate too, but british created music that tackles british life events are more likely to talk to us in our world. a group from sheffield or manchester for eg lives in our world. that is more pertainent to us then a west coast grunge outfit. thats why our pop music has been world leading and creative, we took rock n roll, r & b, ska, punk, and turned it into music that was meaningful to us... from the 60's beat boom to the uk version of punk ... note the american punk never took off here, until we made it our own. id suggest that if there are so many still finding nirvana etc so apt, then its the recent british groups who have failed to address the problems/lifes of these youths.

i dont find comedy in eastenders, i find zainab just bizarre, not a pleasant view. emmerdale pisses all over the rest when it comes to comedic performances, viv, nicola, val, in particular are often the scource... great characters.

well with only a couple of months now to go, the tories opinion poll lead is all but evaporating! :lol: if the latest polls are correct then gordon brown will be returned. i dont think people like gordon brown, but respect him more then they trust boy cameron. imho brown looks like a statesman where cameron looks and sounds like 'sound byte boy', a product full of hot air and promises that the public dont believe that they can deliver.

that means nothing, t shirts are a mass produced fashion statement, you get little kids with 'slipknot' t shirts on, you get che guevaras fisog on t shirst being worn by people who probably dont know who he is... i think its kinda fashionable to wear a nirvana t shirt without being a fan.

i dont think that nirvanas popularity is in much doubt, were they good?, well if you liked them then yes! are they relevant today? like any popular group yes to a degree. its this degree that is being debated. clearly some still do find nirvana relevant but just how many? both the kids i mix (and own..lol) and those russ mixes with dont particually like nirvana, other then liking the odd track here or there. are they more popular amongst todays youth then weller/the jam?.... yes! because weller has issued nothing any good since the jam finished (from a 'teen' perspective) nearly 30 years ago... nirvana however were active half that time ago and their influences are still around. weller was bemoaning the likes of nirvana, saying that british people should be listening to british music because its more relevant to british kids ... i fully agree. i dont 'get' nirvana, never did, its another of those groups who i should like (like many indie bands around that time), but simply dont.

i think the problem with younger members is that whilst they know they have a voice, a right to an opinion, they think its RIGHT. to them it might be, but in most cases the oldies who were there/seen it all before, usually are nearer the mark. i think this is the case with chris (selfdestruct), he took the trouble to construct a decent post (even if he was abit spikey in his defense of scott), but the trouble is... it was an opinion but overall it isnt one shared by the majority of people who were there. us older buggers understandably dont like having OUR history re-written by the youth! but i liked it, it was refreshing to get a youger persons perspective, and debating opposing issues is good all round.

i have to say that im 100% behind russ here... chris, i reckon you have an over-inflated view of nirvana, i know of NO teenager who is a 'fan', most i know either like a track or two or nothing at all. please remember that your predecessor in rock was john... along with my other now adult offspring, other family members, my g/f, local kids, kids in the schools i work in... no one cites nirvana as 'the voice of youth'. ok, YOU might to be able to use nirvana to speak to you, but dont credit everyone else with that because the kids/adults i know like british or american rock , dance, britpop/indie and retro... groups like the kinks, smiths, pistols, blur, iron maiden etc ... BRITISH acts are the ones they cite as influencial, meaningful, and speak to them. and thats why weller is right.
