Weller labels Nirvana as 'f****** rubbish'
so?.... our strength has always been that we took american influences and made them our own, from the early 60's through to punk, non of which had much/any resonance with 'us' until 'we' anglacised it and made it our own. swo in that respect weller is right, 'our' bands should be singing about 'our' problems/lifestyle and not try to be american. however i do see the hypocrisy with weller refering to grunge as 'catch up punk' when he made a name for himself with 'catch up 60's' .... <_<

Weller labels Nirvana as 'f****** rubbish'
yep it was digital spy (hence the 'from ds' at the begining). i agree with his sentiments regarding british music. the times of greatest musical creativity here was when the youth of the day took music and made it their own... again a 60's era and punk era referance. i hate chavs trying to be 'ghetto', and thats why i never really understood why middle class white boys should be into american hip hop, rap, etc... whilst musically its credible, i cant see really the connection between that and 'us'. mod, britpop, indie, call it whatever, it is intrinsically english (british) in style and pertains to us. interesting point regarding oasis .... but i dont agree that hendrix was overrated, its easy to get hung up on his gimicks and overlook his genius.

Weller labels Nirvana as 'f****** rubbish'
lol.. you wont think much of my haircut then! (although im not grey). i think the jam were overrated to a point, the point being that he/they drew heavily on 60's culture and passed it off as their own. as for the 'modfather' tag ... thats ridiculous and highlights how this 70's star has usurped 60's culture. if anyone should be refered to as the modfather it should be ray davies, or roger daltrey.

Fuzzbox....are BACK ;-)
lord.... are we all going to agree?... imho they were the only ones producing good melodic guitar pop in the late 80's.

Weller labels Nirvana as 'f****** rubbish'
yeah and a pretty damned potent one at that. the americans might have invented the musical style, but punk became much more then that because our political climate here was ripe ... and it wasnt the first time 'we' took american music and made it oir own.. expending and creating far beyond the original material. (beatles and 60's r & B .)

Weller labels Nirvana as 'f****** rubbish'
..... and even his good material with jam was very heavily 60's styled so it was hardly 'original'...

Weller labels Nirvana as 'f****** rubbish'
former jam frontman and 60's revivalist paul weller has slated nirvana/grunge as fcuking rubbish.. from ds Paul Weller has labelled Nirvana "f**king rubbish". The former Jam frontman - due to scoop the 'Godlike Genius' award at the upcoming NME Awards - claimed that his mid-'90s resurgence in popularity during the Britpop years was infinitely better than the US-dominated music scene that preceded it. Weller told NME: "You'd had all that shoegazing b*llocks and then the whole Nirvana thing, which I thought was f**king rubbish - it was just America catching up with punk rock 20 years too f**king late for me, you know. "So to hear some English guitar music again was really refreshing." He went on to say that the Britpop scene - which comprised bands such as Oasis, Blur, The Charlatans and Suede - was the only time in his career that he felt his music belonged to part of a wider movement. He explained: "That was the first time ever that I'd felt any kinship with any musicians - even though they were all probably at least ten years younger than me." tbh...i can see where hes coming from!!! as a person who never really got the grunge thing, i sypathise with his view! over to you.... is he right or is he talking bollox?

Shameless Series 7.
i liked it! ...lol.. ok it lacked laughs but to tackle the subject of gay - straight changes is pretty unique. all to often shows slowly 'out' people for being in gay denial, and indeed this seriese has championed 'give bum sex a go'... but to have a storyline where a gay guy tries it straight was fantastic! and yes... gay guys CAN turn straight ...the most notable was tom robinson, who in 78 released the anthemic 'glad to be gay', a song about the miseries that gay guys had to cope with in the 70's... in the 80's he married a woman and had kids.

EastEnders ·
strange.... i thought it was pretty average, and often quite dull. but with death storylines in corrie (who i thought was better last night then eastenders) the general mood was one of misery... good old emmerdale was easily I M H O the best on tv last night and laurels return was emotionally the winner.

What seven albums chart your personal music journey
interesting read chris, but i do strongly disagree with you on this. i find that most people become arrested in their musical tastes, especially when they get hitched. i used to be on the old totp forums and the retro forum there was full of people still getting off on old tracks, and completely ignoring new material... all chanting the old and untrue mantra 'music died in (insert a year) all modern music is crap, they dont write songs like this (insert oldie) anymore' .... musical tastes though should develop... they just dont .

Is Gordon Brown A Bully?
tbh i dont know what to make of it.... i suspect there is political skullduggery, i dont think the truth will ever be known.. but even if its true, it hardly detracts from his ability to run the country, which i still rate above boy cameron who spouts enough hot air to fill 5 balloons.

What seven albums chart your personal music journey
actually, after thinking about this...i can do it with singles... 1 Spencer Davis Group - Keep on Running you lot know its a firm fav of mine, it was when i was 9 and its one track i never tire of hearing. in many ways it was the theme tune to my childhood (not lyrically...lol.. ) but it takes me back to my boyhood. 2 Steeleye Span - Gaudette an odd track to pick?... but its the track that got me into folk music in a time where chart music made me :puke2: 3 Sex Pistols - Pretty Vacant could easily have picked 'nmtb' as an album, this reprisents it. possibly the track that got me into punk and conteporary music. the track that opend up the doors to punk/new wave. 4 Human League - The Sound of the Crowd no surprises here maybe, its my theme to the new romantic era and symbolises my life at that time 5 Shamen - Boss Drum got me into dance, the lyrics appealed to me in my hippy phase! and laid the foundations for my interest in dance 6 Binary Finery - 1999 the trance track that opend my eyes to how anthemic , uplifting trance can do to you. it grabs you and evolkes a euphoric sensation ...love it. 7 Queens of the Stoneage - No one Knows the track that awakend my interest in modern rock. imho as good as any retro rock track classic if not better.

UK singles charts.....20 years ago this week.....
in my recent excercise, 1990 proved to be my most disliked year for music.... im not expoecting to find much here that i like!!!! 01. Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U ..... a classic or just cheese? well i reckon cheryl cole ought to take note of this, no gimicks, dance routines, just a straight in your face emotional delivery proving that it can be done. 02. Beats International Featuring Lindy Layton - Dub Be Good To Me ... an ex grange hill actress fronting an early norman cook plaigarism/sample/cover (he built his portfolio on doing this) , effectively, i like this but prefer the original by the sos band from a few years earlier. 12. Mantronix Featuring Wondress - Got To Have Your Love ... track of the chart and the only one ive highlighted that wasnt a cover .. although liberty x did cover it effectively 12 years later. 17. The Stranglers - 96 Tears .... pinched from mike reads 60's prog on radio 1 on a monday evening, the original was a popular choice so the stranglers did this ok cover (? and the mysterions had the orig in late '66, charted low ) 27. Guru Josh - Infinity (1990's Time For The Guru) ... this was ok but the recent re-vamp has utterly ruined it. it only had a short shelf life and for me its now over

EastEnders ·
popularity does = good though.... take westlife for eg! i dont agree about the drama... emmerdale never hypes up itself, the run up to the conclusion was tacky and annoying. i much prefer emmerdales more sober approach to even dramatic storylines (one just a couple of weeks ago) then eastenders hyperbole... but then again im not an impressionable youngster! c'est la vie.

What seven albums chart your personal music journey
i havnt enough albums that i still like.... well, not enough to fit the criteria of this thread. my fav albums (dare, searching for the young soul rebels, parellel lines, etc etc are all from a similar era). same with singles really, my favs tend to be concentrated on fav eras.
