Record of the Decade - Top 200 Results
Thank God both Hung Up and Since U Been Gone are out! The only two records in the top 15 I would have been disgusted with winning. Hey Ya!'s appeal was in its ability to fit in everywhere. It was a hip hop song at heart so it fitted like a glove in the American charts at the time, but also had an obvious funk influence which meant older aged people could enjoy it more than any other song of that kind. That and the fact it was so filled with hooks and obvious catchphrases (like "shake it like a polaroid picture") also made it into somewhat of a party anthem that everyone could enjoy and have a good time too. A perfect example of a song ticking almost every box really. All that being said, I couldn't fit it into my votes and I can't help but prefer Roses if I'm being totally frank  Cannot believe I thought it would drop in at around #26. Cheering for it to go all the way of course, since I ranked it #1.

Wow, BuzzJack was clearly loving the sound of garage in 2000! Maybe I was a bit hasty badgering people for voting off Out Of Your Mind with that in mind. Real shame to see Artful Dodger out anyway, it's fantastic and I always thought it was one of the more well-respected garage tunes. Getting even harder now 7 Days is out. Voted for The Corrs but I almost like everything left quite a bit now.

The first half of 2007 was pretty poor. I actually stopped following music completely from about February to May (although that might have also been in part due to my GCSEs as well and actually trying to be studious for once)! There was almost no good music out that wasn't already from 2006 albums. The second half was a massive improvement and I can see what gooddelta means about the classics thing but I still can't rate the year that highly. It was an average year IMO. Anyway, I think I have 7 of my top 10 left, unless I missed one that came up, which isn't bad going. I've only lost Trick Me (my #3), Disturbia (#9) and Paper Planes (#10). I expect my top 2 will fall before the top 15 though, but both have exceeded my expectations already. But I think my #4 (Robyn/Kleerup) has a good chance of winning the whole thing to be honest! What place did it come last year, out of interest? Either way I don't think Bad Romance will win again, due to the natural fall in its second year we've seen with other songs, and maybe some people even putting it lower because of its favourite status. Robyn is the perennial underdog (for now)!

Untouchable is good but overrated here. It tries to be grand and epic but just ends up falling a bit flat. I'd take Girls Aloud's earlier material (first three albums) over their, as you described, classier later material any day anyway - The Show, Life Got Cold, No Good Advice, Wake Me Up among others are all brilliant pop songs. What's My Name? is great. Only Girl (In The World) is total ear-rape (but slightly better than its lesser sister S&M). Most of this section is a bit 'ehh' for me. Lots of songs I'd class as decent but didn't feature highly in my votes or not at all, so I guess it's a good thing they're in the lower half in terms of the songs in the final.

 I don't think it's terrible, but it definitely was a weak link on a strong list. It was better than Sunday Morning Call, at least. But russt68's adoption of my complaint doesn't really wash this time considering Oasis have actually done very well in this game with other songs!!! Voted for 7 Days this time. Again, not terrible, but significantly weaker in relation to a lot of other songs on this list. Aww, I like the Modjo tune. For once I have no part to play in the elimination of a dance song, may I add!

I agree that Can't Get You Out Of My Head is overrated so no complaints about its huge fall here. Always found the beat of the track generally dull. IMO Come Into My World was CGYOOMH done right - that one was dreamy! And All The Lovers is gorgeous (shame the rest of the album was a slip into boring Kylie again). Poor Just Dance. I prefer it to Poker Face (and I guess that will be the top early Gaga song [again?]) but I'm glad Paparazzi has overtaken it at least as my personal favourite from The Fame as soon as I first heard the album. Go Trick Me!! :D I don't know why everyone has suddenly remembered its brilliance this year either but I'm very glad this got the revival and not the overrated Milkshake (the worst single Kelis ever released!). LOL at Arcade Fire! :o I love it when the indie fans take over these games and send one track soaring up the table. It's a brilliant song anyway and well deserved. I must have played it like a thousand times since it was released and it still hasn't lost any of its power to these ears

West's Top 175 Songs of the 1990's
160 Beastie Boys - Intergalactic (1998) 159 Robbie Williams - Millennium (1999) 158 Beck - Loser (1994) 156 Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give It Away (1991) 155 Sarah McLachlan - Building A Mystery (1997) 152 U2 - Mysterious Ways (1991) 151 Madonna - Frozen (1998) Intergalatic is ridiculously good! Brilliant gritty electro sound. I remember seeing the video on Top of the Pops when it charted here and even as a fan of mostly commercial pop music then I still thought it was groovy as hell (forgot about it for years after that though, until I got more retrospective rather than only enjoying music "from the time"). Loser is good and a classic but something stops me from loving it that I can't quite pinpoint. I feel similar with a lot of Beck's material though, as much as I have masses of respect for him. Maybe I would have liked it more if I was there "at the time", I don't know. Mysterious Ways - one of U2's best from an excellent era for them. Groovy as hell (again!) but it works. Is The Fly still to come? :D Silverchair and R.E.M. are not my bag at all. Sarah McLachlan is ok but she has better, this one is sorely lacking in anything memorable.

West's Top 175 Songs of the 1990's
Think you hit the nail on the head with J-Lo there. She's definitely the least musically talented "major star" I can think of. Her success has always been dependent on massive media presence and hooking up with the right music producers. Generally speaking, if I like the producer she's working with I know I'll probably like the song. And Darkchild is a massive favourite of mine so, unsurprisingly, I adore IYHML. Yeah, I only started following the charts and music really closely in 1999, so a lot of US-only hits from before then I've only just heard in the last few years. Flagpole Sitta only got to #57 here in July 1998! I discovered it when I was looking through old UK charts for some "lost hits" to add to my mp3 collection and saw it on one of them and checked it out on YouTube. Walkin' On The Sun was actually a higher charter than All Star here, surprisingly, but it definitely feels like the latter is more remembered here to me. You Learn always felt flimsy and 'basic' to me :( Not a bad song per sé but on a hit-packed album like Jagged Little Pill it would definitely be one of the few I'd skip. I guess its simplicity is the key so I'm probably missing the point a bit with it but oh well. And you're welcome! :D I know I'd hate to have spent ages on a list and be counting it down to myself, ha. I'm always interested in a 90s list by anyone though, very curious to see what's near the top! My thoughts on the next group of 10 coming up momentarily... (didn't want to do it in this post or it'd be far too long!)

This is absolutely ridiculous! :( I don't think the results from 2001-2003 were very good in reflecting how great that period was though. Or maybe I just like few of the big, well-remembered hits from that period, I don't know. I'm still shocked that a song like Romeo by Basement Jaxx (utter pop perfection!) came like 40th in the 2001 game or something to be honest  Agreed about P!nk - one of only three songs I like by her. The other two are Most Girls and Family Portrait. Clint Eastwood, Forget You!, Mad World, All These Things That I've Done, Another Chance, Run For Cover, Stronger - all great, all should be higher knowing some of the crap that's beaten them! Never liked Scandalous - it was a total "losing identity" move, too American-sounding (although I can understand why they did it as garage was hardly in by 2003 but I digress as usual!). Never liked Riva THAT much - ok enough tune but far from great, but I guess Dannii remaining in the limelight has helped it somewhat in these games.

Now 80
Agreed. Now 60 was the start of them CONSTANTLY using red or yellow text, often with backgrounds of sky/clouds for the Spring/Easter release, or water/sea for the Summer release. Just go back and count how many times this EXACT same design has been used since then, it's ridiculous!! Only the Winter ones are actually half different or interesting these days. And I hate these thrown in objects they do in the background now - it looks plain messy. They indeed should go back to more scenic/colour-based 'plain' backdrops like they used to though, it's not like there aren't enough ideas for them! Now 77 for example could have been a good cover if they didn't ruin it by throwing snowboards everywhere. I should really stop buying these things in general though. It's pretty clear I don't gel with the charts these days as the last few have been AWFUL but for some silly reason I feel I "have" to buy them, mainly because I know for a fact it would annoy me if the charts drastically improved and I thus bought more in the future but had a gap from 80-84 or whatever. My favourite Now covers, by the way: 39, 43, 59. I think the fireball 43 would probably be my absolute favourite, always looked very cool to me!

Shame to see True Steppers out but not a surprise. As usual, people voting out based the ARTIST, rather than the song. Is it going to happen again with Ronan Keating? :D Hardly! The song was only so big because it was played to absolute death on The Box (I feel like I say this so much for songs from this era that it loses its meaning, but Can't Fight The Moonlight was literally inescapably HUGE there, felt like it was played every half hour) so I can't see where the mum connection comes from. I'm sure it had minimal radio airplay until it was announced as the #1 and then it obviously took off a lot more from that (similar to other "surprise" #1s like Believe, Whole Again, etc.) - but either way I'm quite sure it wasn't mums buying it in their droves; it was quite clearly aimed at young people, and more specifically teenage girls who had watched Coyote Ugly (the movie it was in).

West's Top 175 Songs of the 1990's
Some good choices already so far! 175 Moby - Bodyrock (1999) 173 Smash Mouth - Walkin' On The Sun (1997) 172 Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta (1998) 171 Bonnie Raitt – Something To Talk About (1991) 169 Janet Jackson - Together Again (1997) 168 Alanis Morissette - You Learn (1995) 163 Michael Jackson - Black Or White (1991) 162 Madonna - Justify My Love (1990) 161 Jennifer Lopez - If You Had My Love (1999) I shamefully LOVE If You Had My Love. I don't even care about Jennifer Lopez in general but it would probably be in my top 100 of the 1990s if I was doing one (or at least not far off!). It's the Darkchild magic that does it, of course; everything he touched turned to gold back then and this is definitely one of his better productions of that time for me. Justify My Love is also one of Madonna's very best. I've noticed it seems to be a tad underrated in the greater scheme of her back catalogue which is a shame. Obviously the melody takes a back seat here but the beat is incredible, the lurking atmosphere and feel of the track is ELECTRIC and it still sounds very fresh to these ears 20+ years later. Love it! If anything it should be higher IMO. I only heard that Smash Mouth song for the first time last year(!) but it's pretty good. Better than their "other" famous track All Star, for sure. Flagpole Sitta is another I've only heard in the last couple of years but again, it's pretty good. You Learn is probably the worst JLP single for me. In fact it's one of the few tracks on that album that I really don't like much, really. Hopefully some of the others are higher!

Voted for Black Legend again. Slightly surprised others are joining me in this as I thought it would slip through the net due to being relatively forgotten. And Out Of Your Mind joint in the lead? Really? Would anybody be seriously voting it off this early if it wasn't sung by perceived "joke" (as a recording artist) Victoria Beckham? It's not that bad a track - a little dated maybe like many other garage tunes from the time but honestly...

LEAST Favourite of 2000s best selling singles
That's called picking on the "easy targets"... Baha Men, Bob The Builder and the Tweenies are/were all aimed at kids. They're fun, catchy, danceable tracks that are easy to sing along to. In that respect they are very much well made songs and fulfill their purpose admirably. When those songs were in the charts, I was one of the "kids" they were aimed at and I certainly couldn't find fault with them in that respect. There are far worse songs here as far as I'm concerned that are/were aimed at actual teenagers/adults. As for Westlife, well - no arguments there, yeah, those ones are crap. Though I do like Mariah's solo version of Against All Odds which was one of the extra tracks on the CD single here.

Great list yet again!! I knew once we got to the early 2000s the quality of the lists would drastically improve :D There are about five tracks here though that are a clear cut above the rest (not that any of them will win, but you know). Didn't realise that Oasis track sold enough to be in the top 40 of the year! Anyway, Black Legend for me. I'm going to be voting for this for ages though because hardly anybody remembers it, but I for one do and it's rubbish. Shame to see people voting so predictably as usual - isn't this game supposed to be about the song not the act?

It's strange how when an artist falls out of favour with the public that people go off their old hits as well (surely that could be the only reason for Xtina's fall?!). Don't quite understand the logic in that really but whatever... A-Punk is a classic already, for sure! Brilliant song, and the best in this section so far. Not In Love is good but doesn't excite me as much as it does others clearly(!); prefer the other two singles from that album (now I'd be really impressed if Baptism ever entered the chart here ). Dance Wiv Me is also brilliant.

The Voice Within is okay. It is indeed disappointing though that some brilliant, classic songs (especially Bedshaped, Family Affair, Bohemian Like You, My Immortal, Breathe, and probably others I missed scanning the list) have dropped out yet this fairly run-of-the-mill ballad (and the worst single from the Stripped era) remains. My favourite so far is Lola's Theme and I agree with THEO.'s surprise at it not entering before this year. Just superbly uplifting and a brilliant pop hook. They don't make dance tunes like that anymore, that's for sure. Sad :( What's with the continuing popularity of that Dannii track on here? Not that I hate it but still...

Steps - The Singles Rate 2011: Results
Ah, figures! Mind you, it's not really worthy of an 11, so Love's Got A Hold On My Heart won 5th place fair and square. I should really have given an 11 to Heartbeat but as I didn't give any other 10s I decided to just keep Heartbeat at 10 and have 8/9s to other songs I like/love. Great result! LOVE One For Sorrow (although little of the rest of the song matches up to the glorious first 50 or so seconds, not as big on the dancier bits). My upset at it being kept off #1 by Manic Street Preachers definitely signalled my massively growing investment in the charts  Shame Deeper Shade of Blue couldn't steal 2nd. It's definitely their best lyrically, a brilliant pop song all in all. Not bad results altogether, bar Heartbeat's tragically low placing! Should be swapped with ITWYMMF and I'd take that rank fine.

Steps - The Singles Rate 2011: Results
Better Best Forgotten is VERY tinny. I did love it at the time though but not even nostalgia could get it more than a 3 from me IIRC. By the most part I still love the majority of the songs I did as a child (even some embarrassing ones!) but not that one... Great to see Chain Reaction 6th. I was sure it was going to be 14th or something; it looked to me like it was getting a lot of low/average marks! I only wish I had given it a 10/11 now as that might have lifted it above Love's Got A Hold On My Heart and into the top 5 :manson: I don't really 'get' Last Thing On My Mind. I can sometimes enjoy it in the context of other songs from its time but it's never one I'd choose to listen to and indeed if it came up on shuffle on my iTunes, I'd probably skip it more than half the times. I think I gave it a 5 which seems fair... I think it's between Deeper Shade of Blue and It's The Way You Make Me Feel. I could be wrong but I'm sure the former got consistently high marks which might be enough to win, while It's The Way You Make Me Feel got a lot of 10s/11s but also a few people rated it lowly (like me!) - maybe I'm just deluding myself though in thinking that fairly average song won't win...

Steps - The Singles Rate 2011: Results
I just find Stomp hilariously bad. Nothing makes me laugh more than a "party"-type/call to the dancefloor song that is A) completely devoid of any kind of joy or fun anyway and B) would clear the dancefloor in an instant in any kind of club/party setting  I only have their first album. I basically hated them after Love's Got A Hold On My Heart and After The Love Has Gone (they had won the clearly very discerning 7-year old me over with One For Sorrow and Heartbeat before that). I moved on to S Club 7 instead :D

Steps - The Singles Rate 2011: Results
I cannot believe Summer Of Love, Love's Got A Hold On My Heart (which is surely everything AWFUL about a Steps song rolled into one, bar the aforementioned lovely look of Faye), and above all else, f***in' STOMP have beaten (I actually put beating here at first, lol) Heartbeat :drama: Madness! THIS. I have to say I'm rather fond of Lisa's "but my feelings are in vain " bit for some reason (normally I can't STAND bloody LSL vocally but something about it is very endearing) before Claire literally SWOOPS in afterwards. But yeah, it's all about the nostalgia. It's also part of a killer string of pop tracks on Now 41 (5-12, am I the only one who loves that Culture Club song? I guess the UB40 song on Track 13 isn't bad but it's less good - although bizarrely I heard it in a restaurant last week which was strange! They were playing loads of other random, forgotten songs too...) I actually think I underrated You'll Be Sorry a bit. Still, I doubt I'd have made much difference to its position, maybe one place at best!

Steps - The Singles Rate 2011: Results
I don't really see what's so great about Faye compared to the rest... apart from the fact she's the prettiest (as an aside on that, how GORGEOUS did she look during the Love's Got A Hold On My Heart video? It was basically the only time she had her trademark blonde curls long rather than the usual short, definitely her best look [sorry gooddelta but the dreads were awful!!!] so god knows why she didn't keep it). http://i55.tinypic.com/f1cxva.jpg I think if I did the member rate, I would have put Lee and Faye as the top 2 purely because they (mostly) left the limelight post-Steps and didn't bug me like the other three with more crap music (H and Claire was an AWFUL project, and don't even get me started on the unmitigated shite Lisa Scott-Lee put out). But while they were in the band I honestly didn't care about any of them in particular. And oh dear, some of those bottom 5 songs I actually gave decent marks to, at least relative to the rest of my rate - although considering my rate was one of the more scathing ones that doesn't mean much! I don't mind those ballads at all though I wouldn't rush to listen to them so I'm not too bothered about their places. Really there are only four songs I care about here: Heartbeat, One For Sorrow, Deeper Shade Of Blue and Chain Reaction. If any of those four crash out before top 10 then this rate is officially a DISASTER.

Record of the Decade - Playoff 1!
Edited my votes in light of the Stronger/Overprotected mix-up... I seem to love Stronger more than any Britney fan  Mind you, I WAS a huge Britney fan when it was out (went off her massively with the Britney album) and it was by far my fave track when I bought the Oops! album so I was delighted when it got a proper release. Still my fave track by her 11 years on!
