  1. I can understand why some people might find Hey Ya! overrated, but you have to understand it sounded unbelievably fresh and different when it came out back in 2003, at a time of faceless rappers, manufactured pop, reggae-lite and every popstar jumping over their feet to work with The Neptunes . Things were a little on the bland side, particularly on the Hot 100, so when this bonkers, hook-filled, genre-bending tune came around it was very much welcome, I think. And it united (almost) EVERYONE - young, old, pop fans, hip hop fans, rock fans, etc. Its far-reaching appeal was simply incredible to be honest. It's just a shame its sales were so spread out over many months that it didn't get to #1 here in the UK  Plus, personally speaking, when done well - funk music is amazing, so any funk influence in a modern song gets a thumbs up from me.
  2. I actually like the top 10 too, bar LMC and Maroon 5. I'm just pissed off that three of my four favourites in the original 40 (The Streets, Usher and Outkast) have all gone against this drivel  My ranking of the top 10: 1. Kelis - Trick Me 2. Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme 3. Michael Andrews ft. Gary Jules - Mad World 4. Britney Spears - Toxic 5. Destiny's Child - Lose My Breath 6. Anastacia - Left Outside Alone 7. Britney Spears - Everytime 8. Natasha Bedingfield - These Words 9. LMC vs U2 - Take Me To The Clouds Above 10. Maroon 5 - This Love Of course this order won't happen though. Toxic will win, but I'm not sure what will come 2nd.
  3. http://www.olsenportfolio.com/v2/temp/facepalm_anim_test-03.gif Well done on getting rid of one of the best songs there, guys. Might as well get rid of Trick Me now to finish this RIDICULOUS game off. Maroon 5 need to p*** off now. This has lasted WAY too long for a $h!t song that was, of course, overplayed to death at the time as it was designed to be. Are we really saying this is among the 10 best on this list? I'm sorry but that is MADNESS. Wouldn't mind if LMC vs U2 go out either. Although as long as Shapeshifters beat it to be the #1 dance song then it can stay in until the end for all I care. Once Trick Me inevitably goes in the next few rounds though, I'm rooting for a victory for Lola's Theme.
  4. Depends on your age, I guess. It was pretty big news around the time of this chart in 2002/03 but it took so long to go to trial because of some really unfortunate delays that by the time it finally did in 2008 there was definitely a bit of an 'ehh' feeling. I think it was bigger in America too, though, of course. Of course! I was trying to remember what song that sample was also used on and it is of course the Perpetual Motion song from 1998 that I was thinking of. Yes, it's funny the similarities between Mr Redz and that Tiesto song. Although would we be saying that if Busta Rhymes wasn't on both and they didn't have a similar title? Probably not  Very strange that both peaked at #13 though... 4F-mrSY2Nro This is why I like these old chart threads. It's nice to talk about these long forgotten songs. Last time we had one we talked about Dana Rayne!! :D He also kept off Justin Timberlake - Rock Your Body :snif:
  5. Oops, I just noticed in my post before it says Iris peaked at #1! That was a typo (hence why I put airplay #1 in brackets), it of course peaked at #9  Lately is indeed an excellent song, although I adore those kind of R&B ballads and miss them terribly. It's funny though about the UK acts covering previous US hits that I mentioned. At the time I hadn't heard the originals of most of them (although I knew that the Blue song was a cover for some reason, I think I might have seen the original on Kiss one time) so it was quite a surprise a few years later to discover all these songs were covers! I know that late 90s/early 00s pop acts were famed for releasing covers an awful lot but recycling old US hits but UK flops does strike me as a little cheap and trying to fool people into thinking the songs were original. Maybe it's just me though but I don't like that practice at all. Good point about Monica, that was indeed a strange practice. On the subject of Eternal, do you know if they released all their singles in the US? I always found it weird they only had one US hit (Stay at #19) as I'd have thought they would have fitted like hand to glove in the US charts. Monica's success with Angel of Mine clearly proves it was a very US-friendly song and I'd say the same about much of their other material. Although in AOM's case there was the ruckus with Kelle Bryan getting sacked not long after it was released so maybe they had plans to release it there but it was scuppered by that. I'm sure they still must have been kicking themselves anyway.
  6. I actually expected to more from this chart, as I really liked 2003 a year. But I'm surprised how poor it was. Maybe it was just a little bad patch though, I recall there were some really good songs released in the few weeks after this, and April/May time never seems to be a strong period musically for some reason. Another person who hates the mid-00s  I know I'm like the only person on this forum who liked the charts back then. Well of course he'd claim that :P But yeah, he did. His main defense was that the tape was doctored (sounds far-fetched but we are in the 21st century so these kind of things are possible) and there was also a thing about how the man apparently didn't have a mole on his back, which R. Kelly does. The whole problem with the case was that it was a second-hand copy of the tape and wasn't particularly clear so it was very hard to say anything for certain. Combine that with the facts I said in my previous post about the girl not testifying and the uncertainty among her relatives about whether the girl in the tape really was the same one involved in the case and the prosecution didn't really have much to win the case. If you follow the "R. Kelly is a paedophile" line (which I don't, FYI, I'm just stating the facts), then you could say that he was damn lucky and got off on technicalities. But yeah, like the Aaliyah story, the only evidence against him is rumours and allegations. Nobody knows the truth so making claims about him being a paedophile is a little libellous. Regardless we can still at least all admit that Ignition was an excellent tune, and that the man is a brilliant and influental musician who many of the R&B stars of today wouldn't exist without, right? I'd agree with that - but remember this chart was a good period for R&B music. Pop music was on the way out (look at the relative underperformance of someone like D-Side for proof of that), dance music was average and way past its best, and rock music was slightly better than it was in 2001 but was still going through a slight slump ready for the big increase in popularity in 2004 and 2005. So of course there would be more 'classics' and well-remembered stuff from R&B music, just like there were more classics from dance music in the late 90s/early 00s than probably any other genre.
  7. Wow, that's quite high praise! I have to admit I only heard it a couple of years ago; I'm not sure if it was actually released here but I never heard it anywhere and didn't really know it existed for that reason but it's a decent tune. I would say Kryptonite is pretty melodic personally, especially in the chorus which has a very strong melody, but indeed a bit rockier and bigger on the guitars. And yeah, all those songs flopped here, but Nickelback took off with an even crappier version a couple of years later. Sometimes I don't understand the UK charts  Maybe we were too interested in nu-metal US rock bands for those types to be a hit at the time though, and Nickelback came along when that genre wasn't as big. Just a theory. Another R&B hit from the time that should definitely be mentioned here is Usher's - Nice and Slow, which was a massive US #1 hit but only got to #24 here - despite it following up a UK #1 in You Make Me Wanna. Criminal position for one of the best songs of Usher's career and a classic R&B slow jam. The song's underperformance was so damning that (similar to Enrique mentioned earlier) Usher didn't release another single here until Pop Ya Collar off the next album (which was the opposite of this thread: a UK hit but US flop). You could also add Next - Too Close (later covered by Blue and taken to #1), Shai - If You Ever Fall In Love (later covered by East 17 & Gabrielle and taken to #2), Silk - Freak Me (later covered by Another Level and taken to #1), Adina Howard - Freak Like Me (later lyrically covered by Sugababes and taken to #1), Divine - Lately (later covered and taken to #6 by Samantha Mumba)... hmm, is anybody noticing a trend here? More I would add (not necessarily R&B now), and most of them only post-1980s as I don't know a thing about the Hot 100 before then: Cyndi Lauper - She-Bop (US #3, UK #46 - famously about masturbation, why did this flop here?) Dr Dre - Nuthin But A G Thang (from Dre's first album, widely regarded as a hip hop classic - US #2, UK #31) Erykah Badu - Bag Lady (US #6, UK DNC) Ginuwine - Differences (US #4, UK DNC - beautiful song, not sure if it was released here but doubt it would have been a hit anyway) Goo Goo Dolls - Iris (US #9 (but #1 airplay), UK #26 - not a big fan of this song but it's very famous, so I'd add it here, and I'm surprised nobody else mentioned it) Groove Theory - Tell Me (US #5, UK #31) Mariah Carey - basically every song she did between Vision of Love and I'll Be There  Monica - Don't Take It Personal (US #2, UK #32 - early single from Monica, who never broke through here off her own back and is now only remembered in the UK for The Boy Is Mine) Sarah McLachlan - Angel (US #4, UK #36 - quite a famous song today, so that position looks even more ridiculous)
  8. Great choices!! Especially Whitney Houston, Nicole and Brian McKnight. And it's good to see at least someone remembers songs pre-2009  Yeah, the thing that annoys me about the R&B songs at the time is that only the absolute cream of the crop (Brandy & Monica, TLC, etc) could be hits here around 1998/1999. It's a shame as some really good songs didn't get the positions they deserve, whilst a few years later total crap managed to get so high. I guess it happens with every genre in relation to chart trends, but it's still very irritating. Although R&B ballads were never and never really have been popular here off their own back. I think the problem with Heartbreak Hotel was that it was ridiculously old by the time it was released here, being on her album from the year before, obviously. And it was released as promotion for her Greatest Hits album here, so I guess people who heard the song and liked it went and bought that instead, where they could also get several of her classic hits for their money (it was a fairly big Christmas seller that year). It was also released during Xmas = bad time to release. La Bouche is probably the most bizarre flop here I've ever seen. Really never understood that one for all the reasons you've said. The only theory I thought of is there were perhaps too many dance songs at the time but looking at the charts the week it was released I don't think that's really the case from what I can tell. Baffling, really. I would have picked 3 Doors Down - Kryptonite over Matchbox 20 and Vertical Horizon. Not a fan of that kind of US rock but it was a good tune and failed to chart here (but got to #3 in the US). Might add my own to this topic when I actually can be bothered to think and cross-reference these things (aka not now)
  9. It was claimed the girl in the tape was 14 by the prosecution, and the niece of R. Kelly's former protege Sparkle. However, she never testified against R. Kelly and reportedly denied that she was the person in the tape (despite several of her relatives, friends, etc. saying it was her, but there was also several who didn't) so the jury could never prove the age of the girl in the tape. This is the main reason why he was found not guilty. The R. Kelly / Aaliyah relationship was a pretty big rumour at the time. The only evidence is a supposed marriage licence published in a magazine at the time (you can probably find it online). There is no other evidence of it, and both strongly denied it. It's just hot air and rumours that nobody knows the truth of. There were also other incidents of R. Kelly with underage girls, but these were settled out of court. I can't remember the exact details of them though, but the famous one that broke in 2002 and went to trial in 2008 was the only one that went further anyway. Umm, it's called remixes... of course those songs are much older than 2003  And yeah, definitely better than today. Even though R&B was popular at the time there's still VARIETY there, especially at the bottom end.
  10. My faves and comments... 01.R Kelly - Ignition Remix Song was so good it overcame little promo and previous bad press. Excellent R&B cut. 02.Girls Aloud - No Good Advice For some reason I really hated this song at the time. I'm not sure why. It's great. 03.Big Brovaz - Favourite Things Rap remake of The Sound of Music. I actually love this one, even if the idea was a bit cheesy. 04.Sean Paul - Get Busy Nah, I'll pass. Never liked Sean Paul although this was better than his others. 05.Tomcraft - Loneliness One of the better dance tunes from pretty poor years for the genre. Not surprised it got to #1. 06.Lisa Scott-Lee - Lately Crap!! I hated her and her weak as pish voice even when she was in Steps. 07.Cheeky Girls - Take Your Shoes Off Horrible song that wasn't even vaguely funny like The Cheeky Song was. 08.Craig David Featuring Sting - Rise And Fall Pretty average. No idea why this was such a big hit. 09.Bon Jovi - All About Lovin' You I think this was some bland MoR crap from my memory. I'll pass. 10.Bhangra Knights Vs Husan - Husan Mediocre tune bagging on the success of Indian-influenced music at the time. 11.50 Cent - In Da Club The only Fiddy song anyone will ever need. His career should really have begun and ended here. 12.Good Charlotte - Girls And Boys Liked it at the time, but it's a pretty stupid song really... 13.Mr Redz Vs DJ Skribble - Everybody Come On (Can U Feel It) Garage song, I think. Very 2000 but tried to bring it up-to-date by adding Busta Rhymes. It was ok. 14.Busted - You Said No Not as good as their first two singles and only got to #1 by default. 15.Deftones - Minerva Not my cup of tea at all here. Nothing else to say on this for that reason. 16.Red 'N' White Machines - Southampton Boys I have no recollection of this at all?! Some football $h!t, clearly. 17.DMX - X Gon' Give It To Ya Bit of an unexpected rap hit this one, probably thanks to new gangsta rap fans from Fiddy's success. Ok song though. 18.Lisa Maffia - All Over Debut single from Liiiiisa Maffia. No idea why this was so big either, but it was a good song I guess. 19.Bone Thugs-N-Harmony Featuring Phil Collins - Home No memory of this. Another song that probably benefitted from the new popularity of hip-hop. 20.Kelly Rowland - Can't Nobody Thought it was pretty crap compared to Stole at the time. Like it a lot more now, and vice versa with Stole. And I can't be arsed to comment on the rest, so faves, with occasional comments: 23.Shed Seven - Why Can't I Be You 24.Androids - Do It With Madonna Novelty rock from Australia. Good song, quite different, funny music video. Shame it wasn't bigger. 26.Junior Senior - Move Your Feet 27.Kym Marsh - Cry Boring as hell, but I did like her 3rd and floppiest single Sentimental quite a lot. 28.Plummet - Damaged 31.Jennifer Lopez Featuring LL Cool J - All I Have 33.Robbie Williams - Come Undone 38.Clipse Featuring Faith Evans - Ma I Don't Love Her 40.Dead Or Alive - You Spin Me Round {2003} Limp remix. Pretty pointless. I seem to recall they always played this version on the music channels back when the song was re-charting back in 2006 too :(
  11. +15 Black Box - Ride On Time +12 The Bangles - Eternal Flame +10 Madonna - Like A Prayer +8 Lisa Stansfield - All Around The World +6 Soul II Soul - Back To Life (However Do You Want Me) +5 New Kids On The Block - You Got It (The Right Stuff) +4 Simple Minds - Belfast Child +3 Band Aid II - Do They Know It's Christmas? +2 Kylie Minogue - Hand On My Heart +1 Marc Almond with Gene Pitney - Something's Gotten Hold On My Heart -2 Jason Donovan - Sealed With A Kiss It's a pretty bad year indeed, but there's not been many other years where I like my entire top 5 a hell of a lot, and could have easily given them all 15 depending on the competition... New Kids on the Block and Simple Minds are good too. The rest is indeed pretty rubbish. Had to leave out Jive Bunny completely as I honestly have no idea which of their #1s is which...
  12. +15 Belinda Carlisle - Heaven Is A Place On Earth Big fave of mine since I was little, that last chorus is just pure euphoria +12 U2 - Desire +10 Aswad - Don't Turn Around +8 Enya - Orinoco Flow +6 S-Express - Theme From S-Express +5 Fairground Attraction - Perfect +4 Pet Shop Boys - Heart +3 Whitney Houston - One Moment In Time +2 The Timelords - Doctorin' The Tardis +1 Glenn Medeiros - Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You -2 Kylie Minogue - I Should Be So Lucky
  13. Hmm, not exactly a great year for #1s is 1987. Some real dated stuff here, and I'm not just talking about the SAW tracks! +15 The Bee Gees - You Win Again +12 T'Pau - China In Your Hand +10 Aretha Franklin & George Michael - I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me) +8 M/A/R/R/S - Pump Up The Volume +6 Michael Jackson with Siedah Garrett - I Just Can't Stop Loving You +5 Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) +4 Steve 'Silk' Hurley - Jack Your Body +3 Pet Shop Boys - It's A Sin +2 Madonna - La Isla Bonita +1 Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind -2 Mel & Kim - Respectable
  14. Actually, I've just remembered that in gezza76's Closest Races to Number Ones thread he said that Lisa Stansfield - People Hold On was #1 in the early midweeks the week it was released in January 1997, and it ended up at #4. I only remember it because I quoted it in surprise that she was even in with a fighting shot of #1 in 1997 of all years, several years after her commercial peak. Perhaps gezza76 might be able to remember any that possibly dropped further if he sees this thread? :D Nah, I Wanna Hold You wasn't midweek #1. It was released the same week as the Arctic Monkeys' debut single who were definitely #1 all week as I remember it was a bit of a shock to quite a few people that they were heading for the top of the charts as they only had a (admittedly massive) trail of hype behind them at that point, without huge support from the more mainstream media.
  15. I swear some people here just see an R&B/hip hop song (unless it's by a female of course, then it can usually stay) and vote it out. Shame that people can't seem to be objective. Yeah! is fantastic :( I love Dip It Low as well. There are only three I dislike left - pretty much equally: LMC vs U2 - Take Me to the Clouds Above Boogie Pimps - Somebody to Love Maroon 5 - This Love Of those, I'm voting for Maroon 5 as I think it has a better chance of going. Apart from that, the list is great though. I guess it's a testament to how good 2004 was that so many great songs have gone (including two of my absolute faves - The Streets and Usher ) yet the list is still very strong.
  16. What McFly song dropped to #4? I remember That Girl going 1-3 in 2004 (and Brian McFadden going up to #1) but I don't remember any of theirs going 1-4... I honestly don't remember any midweek #1 dropping lower than #3 naturally (i.e. occuring without an error in the early midweeks). Even the Elvis re-releases that were midweek #1s in 2005 didn't do that. Only two missed the top 3 by Sunday (Return to Sender and The Wonder of You) and neither of those were #1 in the mids.
  17. I think he means making people send you their vote in a private message? But I'm not sure what the point of that would be. I'm pretty sure barely any people would bother to participate if it was changed to something like that. I know it doesn't seem like much more effort but people (me included) are lazy!! Where is the tactical voting though? I don't think any eliminations have been down to tactical voting. The only instance of true tactical voting that I can think of was when Lady Gaga's Just Dance was eliminated in the 2009 game. Although there was also that occasion when some retard was posting the votes to try to save one of Leona Lewis' songs :manson:
  18. Guys, O-Zone isn't THAT bad. Yes, it's cheesy europop with an incredibly childish melody and truly laughable lyrics (when translated into English - I mean, what was that about trees reminding them of her eyes or something?) but frankly I miss stuff like that when we all have since is rubbish like Cascada and Basshunter. I know which I prefer!! Save O-Zone!! :( But don't vote out Christina Milian either please. That song is MESMERISING. Let's get rid of the Boogie Pimps instead :D
  19. +15 George Michael - A Different Corner +12 A-ha - The Sun Always Shines On TV +10 Jackie Wilson - Reet Petite +8 Madonna - True Blue +6 Berlin - Take My Breath Away +5 Madonna - Papa Don't Preach +4 Billy Ocean - When The Going Gets Tough... The Tough Gets Going +3 Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls +2 Boris Gardiner - I Want To Wake Up With You +1 Diana Ross - Chain Reaction -2 Nick Berry - Every Loser Wins
  20. POOR CHAKA. But 9th was pretty much exactly what I expected giving the general music taste of this game's voters. +15 Eurythmics - There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart) +12 Paul Hardcastle - 19 +10 Madonna - Into The Groove +8 Feargal Sharkey - A Good Heart +6 Elaine Paige & Barbra Dickson - I Know Him So Well +5 Whitney Houston - Saving All My Love For You +4 Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) +3 Jennifer Rush - The Power Of Love +2 David Bowie & Mick Jagger - Dancing In The Street +1 Wham! - I'm Your Man -2 Phyllis Nelson - Move Closer Eek, lots of dross! At least I vaguely like everything I voted for, but don't really love any of them it has to be said.
  21. That won't happen. American acts want to have an advantage in the US, so they don't care about chart positions in any other country. They'll continue to drop songs at the same time they're being released in the US, and that goes for everywhere else worldwide. This is where British acts can actually take advantage of the strategy though, as they can hold back their releases a couple of days until the Sunday if they really wanted to, and I think some acts probably will do this. Although Take That didn't, but I don't think they give a $h!t about their singles chart position to be honest. But certainly I can imagine the likes of The Saturdays, JLS, Cheryl Cole, etc. doing this (if they do on air, on sale with any releases). Why? Haven't some of The Saturdays highest-selling singles come from songs that were available from the start of the airplay curve (as album cherry-picks)? I don't know why some people are still so concerned with chart peaks. Are you telling me people would genuinely prefer The Saturdays new single did a Forever Is Over? Because that's what I think would happen if they held back. It just doesn't make any sense. Peak positions are so irrelevant nowadays, anyway - now that songs are available forever and ever you can have songs that missed the top 40 selling loads and loads! I think they could still debut at #1 though, knowing them and their desperation and loony fans. By the way, don't you just love how interesting and unpredictable the top of the chart is due to on air, on sale? I can't believe anyone would want to go back to the days when the #1 for that week was obvious by Monday night at the latest (and nine times out of ten, on Sunday night). How boring was THAT?! Would it though? Everybody knew Lady Gaga and Take That would be available this week, so if they were doing any chart predictions they could have accommodated this. And in terms of entering the top 40 straight away due to on air, on sale, it'll probably only be big-ish acts anyway, so I don't think it'll affect that *too* much. Of course with smaller acts it's more difficult to know when their song is being released. By the way, on the iTunes homepage, they do actually have a new releases section for singles, and that does include every release - for example, Take That are on there now, and they released on air, on sale. See below: http://i56.tinypic.com/72r3hf.png
  22. I'd say it's more because there was a lot more stuff people hated in 2004. In 2006, I'm pretty sure Just Lose It would have gone in the first 10 songs as well. I mean, compare the same stage in 2006 when we were already losing the likes of Christina Aguilera and Girls Aloud!! (and yes, I know GA have been eliminated in 2004, but that was with a ballad and a cover, not a dance-pop song). So I don't think you can take anything from it. In fact, I think Without Me and the Real Slim Shady will both do similar or even worse in 2000 and 2002 (despite being better songs) because there's less there to be offensive to BuzzJack members. Stan and Lose Yourself will probably do better, as Eminem's songs in his Slim Shady persona seem to be more hated, at least by his non-fans. Anyway, if Eminem goes and The Streets go after him, that'll be five R&B/hip hop songs gone in a row  Deary me. And I was surprised almost none of it went in the first 10. Although I think a few Just Lose It voters might move to My Band, so that might go out next round. That's still R&B or hip hop though, obviously.
  23. I doubt it'd beat Band Aid, Frankie Goes To Hollywood (x3), George Michael and Nena. Mind you, that's still only 6 songs so it might scrape through on 7th if it's lucky but then there's also Duran Duran and Wham! which are pretty popular so I still can't see it. Too much competition for poor Chaka! :drama: I think it could have got through in 1982 or 1983 though.
  24. Yay, Spandau Ballet made the wildcard round :D +15 Chaka Khan - I Feel For You  Anthem! It won't qualify but c'est la vie. +12 George Michael - Careless Whisper +10 Wham! - Wake Me Up Before You Go Go +8 Jim Diamond - I Should Have Known Better +6 Nena - 99 Red Balloons +5 Wham! - Freedom +4 Duran Duran - The Reflex +3 Frankie Goes To Hollywood - The Power Of Love +2 Lionel Richie - Hello +1 Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas? -2 Stevie Wonder - I Just Called To Say I Love You Adore my top 2 but the rest are just fairly good.
  25. Yeah, but why would anyone want to do that? :kink: But seriously, I agree that the two charts are pretty similar these days. Certainly far more than I ever remember them being. I'm not really sure why this is - perhaps because, for the first time that I can remember, the type of music popular in both the UK & US seem to be in perfect harmony with each other (obviously country aside). Perhaps it's the fact that the digital era has meant that it's easier for songs to be hits at (almost) the same time in both countries rather than having to wait months to come over. Who knows. For what it's worth, I'd say the peak of the Hot 100 was the mid-to-late 90s. Fairly varied chart with possibilities for any genre to do well (within reason) and the likes of TLC, Lauryn Hill, Mariah Carey, etc. reaching #1 when they never could in the UK. Good times  I have no idea what the hell happened a few years later but indeed after 2001 it was starting to go o_O in terms of urban overload, with 2004/05 being the absolute nadir - those years were just :puke:, Mariah's domination of the latter year aside. I'll still never take the US seriously for making D4L's Laffy Taffy go to #1 there :/
