Not a great chart IMO, though I'm probably too British to enjoy some of these Eurohits :D Most of the best songs are outside the top 40, including some really good R&B/hip hop... 4 5 Bla Bla Bla Gigi D'Agostino 7 7 Desert Rose Sting Feat. iTunes Chart: April 2011 (II)
Well, she's probably moved to America now, so easy mistake to make :D Although I don't really know for sure, I barely know anything about her. Wikipedia says she is based between London and Los Angeles, so depending on your definition you could call her music half-American? And the thing with Jay Sean is he WAS British, and based in Britain, when he started out. It's only since 2009 or whenever it was that Down took off that he practically f***ed off to America. I think it's a little different to people like Rihanna who have always been from America (musically). I mean, Jay Sean basically owes his career to Britain, Rihanna owes her career to America. That's where their musical roots basically lie. But I guess it depends on your perspective. Some will always consider Rihanna Barbadian regardless. I think it's pretty ridiculous, personally, but whatever
-
iTunes Chart: April 2011 (II)
Yeah, but her entire career has been based in, and is a product of, America. Do you really think she'd still be topping the charts right now if she was still based in Barbados? She wouldn't have even got off the ground in that case! I mean, we're talking music here. As a person, she's Barbadian, yes, and she'd definitely identify as that herself. But I think it's pretty clearly that as a recording artist (which ISN'T the same, and should be what matters in this case) she is American. And I couldn't give a fook what Wikipedia says on the subject, personally. Anyway, it's not like America is supporting songs that we haven't supported already. That stat just shows how behind they are on anything that isn't their own music, really. It's probably more embarrassing for our charts at the moment that acts like Natalia Kills got top 10 in Germany yet can't even make top 100 in their home country.

LEAST Favourite of 2005s best selling singles
Great to see the two worst songs that were left get deservedly kicked to the kerb in the last 2 rounds, despite them being by acts BuzzJack tends to like! There's really nothing left I dislike now. I think I'll vote for Bodyrockers. Even though it kind of reminds me of mid-2005 when it was everywhere on the music channels, it's kind of that that made me hate it, really. Got grating after a little while, though I definitely liked it at first. I'm not making much sense of my feelings to this song, really  Us TIOBI fans need to get behind one song to save them! Just kidding. I'll accept their elimination - there are much better songs here anyway. EDIT: By the way, "singles" is missing from the title [/pedantic]

I don't understand why anybody would be upset about Pon de Replay going. What is there to love about it? Apart from a good beat it's pretty unremarkable in every other way. I suppose if Rihanna didn't end up being so big it might be easier to look on it in a slightly more favourable way, kind of like how Britney's earlier singles are looked on in disdain because what she is now (although most of my absolute favourites Britney singles are her early ones, but that's probably because I used to love her back then and now I only vaguely like her, sadly, so I have way more nostalgia in her earlier ones). Anyway, I'm going off-topic here. As for the 2010 game, I'd say Helping Haiti, The Time, Not Afraid (even though it's much better than Love The Way You Lie) and Journey will definitely go out in the first few. I have a bad feeling Plan B and Cee Lo Green will both do crap too, though. Why would you think LTWYL will miss the top 20? I really doubt it will. I think all the Rihanna songs will make the top 20, and Only Girl is definitely a contender to win. I don't really care about the 2010 game though, to be honest, I only like about 10 songs there at best, and that's probably being generous. It's the 2000 game I can't wait for. I like almost the whole top 40 there :cheer: (even the novelty stuff brings back fun memories)

I didn't know Slight Return until I bought Now 34 a few years ago :D It doesn't get much airplay at all these days except on 90s/indie stations, so it's not a surprise that younger people wouldn't know it :( Shame, The Bluetones are totally forgotten by the general public as well these days, even though they were quite big for a short period back then...

iTunes Chart: April 2011 (II)
Yeah, it's true that American music is much more in keeping with chart trends right now (I don't want to say higher quality, personally, as I actually prefer British music as a whole ). I think British music tends to be less mainstream, too. That's another point, actually - so many of our major acts these days build their schedule around The X Factor or to release albums at the end of the year. And it doesn't help that acts like Cheryl Cole like to end their campaigns after TWO (:manson:) singles just because one of them flopped. Great way to tell us your album sucks, dear. High profile American acts tend to release at least four singles from an album, regardless of previous singles' performances. I'd say the Sound of poll is perhaps another reason, too - it seemed to be even less mainstream this year, at least in terms of current trends, compared to the days when several new acts would be launched into the charts each year just from that alone.
-
iTunes Chart: April 2011 (II)
How can anybody say that the lack of British acts is to do with on air/on sale is beyond me. It's because there's simply not THAT many British acts releasing at the moment for some baffling reason that I can't explain. Perhaps they're all on holiday. The only high profile "flop" by a British act because of this is probably Chipmunk (at the moment), yes, but he still could climb. The likes of Jodie Connor and Dionne Bromfield would be probably top 20 at best even if they were front-loaded. There's also Arctic Monkeys, of course, but frankly they're from a dead genre at the moment. Holding back the release wouldn't do them much better IMO than they're doing now with the on air/on sale. The better question would be "where are all the high profile British acts? :drama:"... the ones who could actually make a push to the upper reaches of the charts. There doesn't seem to be any of them about at the moment. Of course the Americans have so many acts they can pump out big hits all year round. That said, it's amazing that record companies haven't realised that releasing the video and sending the song to radio at the same time is by far a better strategy. Surely it's common sense? Instead of getting one form of promotion, you're getting two at the same time for a much longer period?

Well I don't see why it has to be degraded to "terrible" just because you prefer the #2s! :P I love the #2s in 1997 as well but I think I slightly prefer the #1s. My favourite #1s of 1997: Blur - Beetlebum The Chemical Brothers - Block Rockin' Beats Eternal feat. Bebe Winans - I Wanna Be The Only One Olive - You're Not Alone Spice Girls - Spice Up Your Life White Town - Your Woman My favourite #2s of 1997: Blur - Song 2 The Cardigans - Lovefool Gala - Freed From Desire Kula Shaker - Hush Natalie Imbruglia - Torn Supergrass - Richard III It's close, but I think the group of six #1s is better than the #2s, for me. Have to say I hate Tubthumping, by the way :( Will probably get my -2, just so you're prepared. EDIT: I've just realised I've said "have to say" three times in my last 2 posts! Gosh, not sure what I've got that on the brain today.

It was a decent enough year in general - better than 1990-1993, and about the same quality as 1994 - but I have to say I think 1995 as a year is a LITTLE overrated. I actually prefer the four years that came after it by quite some margin. It was the year of Britpop of course but I have to say only Pulp were really on form out of the Britpop bands IMO, and I suppose a few of the smaller ones like Elastica. Blur and Supergrass were better after 1995, Oasis were better before. Wasn't a very good year for any other genres either, IMO, unlike the years that came after :( It was a brilliant year for #1s? I don't see why a year should be judged by a few naff tracks like Puff Daddy, The Teletubbies and Aqua getting to #1. Some of my favourite #1s ever happened in 1997.

Based on what? A few 15s she's had so far? People always predict Mariah to do well in these kind of things for some reason and she never does. She ain't that popular here! Plus she has a legion of rabid haters who will vote against any song she's ever done. I think Confide in Me is the more likely winner of this particular year, anyway. On another note, I forgot to say before that I'm pleasantly surprised Janet and Urban Cookie Collective qualified :D Didn't think either would make the cut.

Song that's number one in the most countries
You completely missed the point. I know perfectly well they were successful worldwide, but Wannabe was BY FAR their biggest hit, while Lady Gaga has had at least three songs that have all been as big as each other. Spice Girls never even got to #1 again in most of the major markets after Wannabe, therefore only one HUGE worldwide hit, IMO.

Song that's number one in the most countries
You think the Spice Girls never got hatred?! They got loads of the stuff. The most common was that they couldn't sing. Fair enough, they weren't brilliant vocalists, and indeed most of them (particularly Geri) had to have a lot of voice training, but to say they couldn't sing is a little ridiculous. The other was that they were manufactured, especially compared to the "pure" Britpop bands they had arguably helped to kick out. Again, fair enough in a way, they were, but they still had more magic and chemistry than most groups that had been together for years and years. That's why they were so successful, really. And whilst they were manufactured they still had more input than a lot of people gave them credit for at the time. Anyway, I'm starting to sound like a huge Spice Girls apologist here  But the point is they got a lot of hatred chucked their way, so nothing was different than it is to now. In fact, the stigma of being a "former Spice Girl" is probably a big reason why none of them managed to last as solo acts. And to be honest, I'd argue that Lady Gaga's first two years were just as successful, if not more successful, than the Spice Girls, overall. Spice Girls were bigger in the UK, but they only had one huge hit in most other countries, including America, for one. EDIT: Or were you talking about girl bands?! In which case, you're probably right, at least for the forseeable future. I think it depends though - a big girl band is probably only going to come from America now though. It's not impossible.

Song that's number one in the most countries
In October 1997, Candle in the Wind had already reportedly been #1 in 21 countries. It may have got to number one in more in the weeks after that, but it seems unlikely (read: impossible) it would have got to #1 in a whole 35 more countries to top Shakira. Source: http://www.neosoul.com/riaa/19971002news.html LONDON--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Oct. 2, 1997--PolyGram Thursday announced that Elton John's single ``Something About The Way You Look Tonight''/``Candle In The Wind 1997'' has shipped more than 26 million units worldwide, making it the second most successful single ever after Bing Crosby's ``White Christmas'' which has sold more than 30 million copies (see Note A). The record for second biggest selling single was previously held by Bill Haley and his Comets' ``Rock Around The Clock'' which has sold 25 million units (see Note A). ``Something About The Way You Look Tonight''/``Candle In The Wind 1997'' has been released in more than 40 countries, reaching number one in 21 of those so far, and it has broken a string of records all over the world. - In the United States, the Rocket Records/A&M Associated Labels single entered this week's Billboard Hot 100 chart at number one. The single is the fastest selling ever in the United States and the RIAA certified the record 8 times platinum in the first 24 hours it was on sale. - It is the world's biggest selling single ever by a British artist. - Shipments in the United Kingdom now exceed five million, the largest amount ever for a single there and the record is still at number one. - Next week the single will enter the Japanese combined international and domestic music chart at number one. This will be only the second time in the chart's history that an international artist has entered at number one. The last time was in 1976. - In Germany shipments have passed four million and the record is still at number one. - In France more than two million units have been shipped and the record is still number one. - More than 1.8 million units have been shipped in Canada and the record is still at number one. - In South Africa the single has been certified platinum an incredible 12 times. - The record is the biggest selling single ever in Austria and Belgium and in Norway where it has been certified platinum seven times. - The single is the first ever to be certified gold in Israel. All Elton John artist royalties and PolyGram profits are being donated to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund. Note A: Source: Guinness Book of Records

LEAST Favourite of 2005s best selling singles
No, they're not. Sorry to confuse you :D I was just trying to defend 2004 against these attacks by listing some other big hit singles (songs that peaked in the top 5) that I liked that didn't make the top 40 of the year. This is the EOY top 40: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_in_Briti...singles_of_2004 If you took out the crap from the EOY top 40 and replaced it with those songs, though - now that would probably be the best year-end top 40 ever :D Though you could probably do that with any year, really.

LEAST Favourite of 2005s best selling singles
There were some pretty terrible #1s, that's true. Babycakes was the absolute low and easily one of the worst #1s ever, and the reality crap (Michelle, Sam & Mark, Peter Andre) at the start of the year certainly wasn't enjoyable either. Not to mention I absolutely hate Call On Me :puke2: However, I still refuse to think of it as a bad year for the charts. Some other top 5 hits I liked from this year: Keane - Somewhere Only We Know (Bedshaped was better, but that only got to #10) Victoria Beckham - This Groove/Let Your Head Go Will Young - Your Game N.E.R.D - She Wants To Move Twista - Slow Jamz Girls Aloud - The Show Morrissey - Irish Blood, English Heart (although this wasn't his best of 2004) Kelis feat. Andre 3000 - Millionaire The Libertines - Can't Stand Me Now Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out Manic Street Preachers - The Love Of Richard Nixon Deep Dish - Flashdance Lemar - If There's Any Justice Nelly & Christina Aguilera - Tilt Ya Head Back The 411 - On My Knees Jay Sean - Stolen Outkast - Roses Gwen Stefani - What You Waiting For? I'd definitely take this list and the one above compared to any of the recent years, bar perhaps 2008 which I also thought was decent. The 2003-05 period seems to get a very hard time on this site, I've noticed :( They were quite urban-heavy but I actually think a lot of decent stuff from that genre was doing well (also come crap, too, unfortunately) and I actually love R&B music, anyway. And 2004 was the start of the indie revival :D

LEAST Favourite of 2005s best selling singles
You're all way too harsh on 2004. It was a good year, but the best sellers list doesn't do it justice as usual. But even from the 40 there there's still some brilliance. These would still get a play from me: Usher - Yeah! Anastacia - Left Outside Alone Britney Spears - Toxic  Frankee - f*** U Right Back (Yes, I genuinely liked this one and bought it on single - the Eamon one was whiny crap though) Kelis - Milkshake Destiny's Child - Lose My Breath :D Natasha Bedingfield - These Words Britney Spears - Everytime The Streets - Dry Your Eyes  Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme :D Jamelia - Thank You :D Outkast - Hey Ya! Michael Andrews feat. Gary Jules - Mad World McFly - 5 Colours In Her Hair (I loved their first album - sorry!! Obviously was better though) Kelis - Trick Me :D Cassidy feat. R Kelly - Hotel Rachel Stevens - Some Girls 17/40 is pretty good going really. I liked way less on 2006 and 2007, off the top of my head. Anyway, back to 2005, sad to see the Audio Bullys looking like they're about to exit :(

Dreams >>>>>>> What Is Love? No injustice here, I'm afraid. And even calling it as such is an insult to the true injustices like Robson & Jerome beating Common People, etc
