  1. +15 White Town - Your Woman Classic one hit wonder, brilliance +12 Blur - Beetlebum One of the biggest non #1s ever, but thank god it happened anyway! +10 Spice Girls - Spice Up Your Life Sounds soooo of its time but easily their most fun single, was my fave song when I was little, lol +8 Olive - You're Not Alone Really special dance track - sublime +6 Eternal feat. Bebe Winans - I Wanna Be The Only One Deserved first #1 for Eternal +5 The Chemical Brothers - Block Rockin' Beats Prefer this to Setting Sun to be honest +4 Spice Girls - Who Do You Think You Are / Mama 4 Points for WDYTYA? Mama sucks as always +3 Tori Amos - Professional Widow Ah, the days of remixed singles getting to #1 :D This was fun +2 No Doubt - Don't Speak Overplayed, but it's an achievement I still like it despite that +1 R. Kelly - I Believe I Can Fly Nowhere near as good as his 90s R&B jams, but still great I like everything I gave points to quite a bit. Nostalgia starts kicking in hugely here. One obvious piece of $h!t stands out, that is worse than even Aqua and the Teletubbies: -2 Puff Daddy & Faith Evans - I'll Be Missing You :puke:
  2. No problem :) And welcome back! I love it just for the fact that they got a million seller out of a song that would have been lucky to sell like 1/50th of that otherwise, just by adding some sped up vocals on the song and putting it on an ad  Genius!!!
  3. Well it's not like it's some novelty World Cup trash :P It was composed by the lead singer of The Lightning Seeds so it has serious credentials as a pop song. BuzzJack doesn't hate football songs, it's just too many of them are lazy! It's easily my favourite football song anyway  Although the New Order one from 1990 is great too, and of course Vindaloo in 1998 (although that IS novelty, but at least it's amusing)!
  4. Don't be stupid - there's many white American acts on Radio 1's playlist right now. It's nothing to do with race, and everything to do with genre. Because Colbie's music type is a total niché in the UK (at least in the past decade or more), and we already have our own acts to fill that little 'gap in the market' anyway. So essentially, we have utterly no need for Colbie Caillat. Even if she did have a hit here, she'd just be a one-hit wonder like Joan Osborne, Vanessa Carlton, Sara Bareilles, Jason Mraz. Only the ones that have something a bit different to them like Alanis Morissette can carve out a decent UK career. I don't really know why Hurts didn't do well though - that is indeed more of a mystery. Their songs really sound like perfect radio hits to me. But I guess commercial radio was too busy playing Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, JLS, etc. to death last year to even notice them.
  5. Two -2s for the Spice Girls already :o At least the hate will be fairly split. I genuinely have no idea what's going to happen this round. Because it's wildly different to any other #1, because it was funny seeing a song like that at the top, because The Prodigy are very well loved within their genre  I don't know. Just some reasons that spring to mind. Are you going to be tracking their points throughout?
  6. +15 The Prodigy - Firestarter +12 Fugees - Killing Me Softly +10 Baddiel & Skinner & The Lightning Seeds - Three Lions +8 Spice Girls - 2 Become 1 +6 George Michael - Jesus to a Child +5 The Prodigy - Breathe +4 Fugees - Ready or Not +3 Gina G - Ooh Aah... Just a Little Bit +2 Babylon Zoo - Spaceman +1 Spice Girls - Say You'll Be There -2 Deep Blue Something - Breakfast at Tiffany's

  8. Why would I include songs pre-reunion? LOL. I was talking about songs they had released after Patience, I thought that was pretty clear in that sentence. And I have no idea if Rule the World has sold more, but even if it did I still would say Patience is far more successful based on overall success/impact at the time. Patience was the song that reintroduced them, simple as. I doubt Rule the World would have been as big as Patience was if it was released as their comeback single (it lacks the same big impact IMO) so one could say that RTW was only did as well as that because of it anyway. Basically, everything stems from Patience, so they'd have to have a really huge hit (preferably with something different to the pop/rock thing) to displace it as the defining hit of Take That's 2nd career for me...
  9. 5 hours left for voting. There's currently a tie for 2nd place :o Not that it matters as both will go through but it would be nice for someone to break it as ties are ugly and messy ;_; It's still possible that the last wildcard spot could change to another song, but everything else is pretty much certain at this point.
  10. Of course Patience is a "classic" record. It was their big comeback, first single in over a decade, and set them on the way to being the biggest British act of the last 5 years. And even though they've had some pretty big hits since they still haven't topped it in terms of success. And saying it's an 'easy song to make' is just LUDICROUS. The melody on that song is superb. And no, it's not easy to write such a strong melody just like that. But to be honest, comparing it to Maneater is dumb. Both are very good for what they are, and both rely on totally different aspects, with Maneater instead relying more on the beat/production. It's silly... if you're going to compare it to any song left, then Who Knew is easily the closest. (EDIT: Oh, just realised Who Knew is gone  I haven't been paying much attention!! Well, whatever)
  11. This is a GREAT top 20. Very varied, too, in comparison to most of the Hot 100 charts in the last god knows how many years. Some really good R&B tunes from back when it was actually good - Tony Rich Project, Mary J. Blige, R. Kelly, D'Angelo. Mini British invasion with Everything but the Girl and Oasis smashing over there (and then a few others like Spice Girls, Donna Lewis, Mark Morrison following not long after). La Bouche is a funny one - flopped here but the US loved it, pretty rare for a dance track. It was ok though. And I'm not going to lie, I love that 3T song. Rest of their stuff was crap though. To be honest, the only real dud here is the Gin Blossoms. Can't stand that kind of US alt-rock/pop, and there was loads of bands like them back then  I blame R.E.M. Thankfully most of them barely made any impact over in the UK though.
  12. I think BOTH Patience and Hips Don't Lie will be remembered. I mean, Hips Don't Lie was huge everywhere in the world in Summer 2006 - people aren't going to forget THAT in a hurry. It's like how everyone remembers the Macarena, whether they want to or not  And Patience is a radio staple already and I don't see that suddenly stopping any time in the next 10 years. And I think Eric_Blob has been taking you all for a ride in this thread. Or at least I hope so, or I'm seriously worried about him now.
  13. They've always been pretty strange to be honest... it'd be nice to finally get a Now album with every big hit of the time period on it one day but it seems like that's never going to happen, especially when the likes of Eminem and Madonna never make it with their supposed "licensing issues" :( I think the closest was Now 50, but that still had a couple of notable misses. Although some of the ones in 2007/2008 were quite complete in their coverage as well, actually... I doubt it - her next single will be already out by the time Now 79 arrives, and unless it's a total flop I can't see them not including it over Born This Way. And there isn't really any specific determination. If we knew that we wouldn't be so baffled. They seem to just ignore big hits for no reason whatsoever sometimes
  14. Hardly going back to the 90s when neither Snoop or Dre had a big UK hit in the 1990s, lol. Don't worry, it already did enough to go top 40 sixteen and a half years ago. I cannot believe people are even buying that garbage. The mind truly boggles. Some people really would like anything as long as it's catchy.
  15. gooddelta? I don't know. I was just talking about any random dance fan  I prefer Set You Free to Wonderwall, anyway. The latter is good but I think Some Might Say is better so I wouldn't change their chart fortunes in 1995 on my personal opinion. Although I can appreciate Wonderwall perhaps deserved #1 on classic status alone. Missing is one of the essential mid-90s house hits! I think it's one of those songs almost everyone knows but doesn't perhaps know the artist, though. And whilst I agree that Born Slippy would have been a great #1, I LOVE the Fugees so it's not a huge injustice for me. Although they had already been #1 for four weeks at that point so they could have just given it to Underworld. And just as an fyi, next time you call the Fugees stupid, please say Fugees (minus Lauryn Hill) to avoid breaking my heart. Thanks.
  16. 33 votes so far! For a while a few songs were quite close for the last 2 automatic final spots but now there's a pretty 'clear' top 4 forming. Still 22 hours for any more votes. Although I'm not expecting many more, again everyone votes so early  Not that I mind, it's just funny when we have 48 hours! Think Twice denied N-Trance of #1 though :o Some would say that's a much bigger sin! I Believe also denied Everything But The Girl - Missing technically, too - if you ignore Coolio standing in the way at #2, also  Conclusion: There were way too many good #2s/#3s in 1995. This could have been possibly the greatest year for #1s ever - instead it's merely 'good'.
  17. LOL @ Flo Rida. That song is in the 200s on iTunes, and that's already with a video out on the music channels (#40 there last week). Great idea to include that, Now!! Weird they would include Hold It Against Me and not Born This Way. Both have underperformed but surely Britney has underperformed much more? I guess Gaga's team is just being a bitch, I suppose. I was actually expecting them to ignore Britney totally considering they snubbed the similar-performing '3' but obviously not. No Diddy-Dirty Money either but I don't think Puff Daddy/P Diddy/Diddy has ever been on a Now! album anyway. And look at all the featured credits on Disc 2! Devlin strikes me as an odd inclusion, too - it's quite old and is probably totally out of the Joe Public's memory now considering it dropped quickly after a lowish peak. Kick that and Flo Rida off and replace with Tiësto and Nero and this would be about the best they can do. But overall it's decent-ish considering what they had to play with.
  18. I'm not sure if the -2 is compulsary? I counted his votes anyway, it's not really a big deal. I don't think it's really that well known in comparison to a lot of the other #1s here this year. I don't even know the last time I heard it on the radio... And anyway, 8 people have given it points so far (although mostly only lower ones, admittedly), so it's not doing THAT badly so far.

  21. 32 votes so far! Previous rounds have been in the ballpark of 35 so I'm expecting at least a couple more. Good job the deadline wasn't extended though since everybody here seems to love to vote in the first 24 hours anyway. Results and 1995 up between 8-9pm tomorrow/today. An amazingly varied year for #1s IMO. Blame Levi's for Stiltskin :( Although their adverts sent some great songs to the top of the charts in the 90s so I can forgive them this one mistake. I'd imagine he was talking more specifically about the 'team' ones, which were indeed AWFUL without any exception and thankfully have died out nowadays. I mean, I've never heard this Terry Venables one but I'm sure it was a masterpiece compared to something like THIS: hSNqa_Frh-c :puke2: #9 in May 1998! Truly inexplicable.
  22. Counted all votes up to AcerBen and there's a fairly clearish top 4 so far, with the fourth song being exactly 40 points ahead of the fifth. The current leader has a 29 point lead over the song in second position. The last wildcard spot is by far the most hotly-contested race at the moment, with four songs being very much in the running for that with only 11 points separating the 7th and 10th positions. The current loser is, perhaps unsurprisingly, Manchester United Football Squad - Come On You Reds, although Take That - Sure is not much further ahead. By the way, I'll set the deadline for this as 7pm on Wednesday, so RabbitFurCoat can edit that into the first post if he wishes...
  23. +15 Mariah Carey - Without You  +12 D:Ream - Things Can Only Get Better +10 East 17 - Stay Another Day +8 Prince - The Most Beautiful Girl In The World +6 Baby D - Let Me Be Your Fantasy +5 Take That - Everything Changes +4 Pato Banton - Baby Come Back +3 Tony Di Bart - The Real Thing +2 Wet Wet Wet - Love Is All Around +1 Whigfield - Saturday Night -2 Stiltskin - Inside Eugh, this is easily the worst year yet :( In the words of my +12, things can (and indeed DO) only get better from here. And thanks for the spreadsheet, RabbitFurCoat! :D
  24. Yeah, I suppose it's a nice idea to raise money, but god knows why anyone would buy it with THAT tracklisting! Dire doesn't even begin to describe it. And they should have put old noses in the background on the cover! There's been some great ones over the years. My fave was 2001 with the rolled-out tongue.
  25. Very true about radio. Comparing airplay charts from ten years ago to now and there's a definite difference in speed. Go back a few more years and the difference is even more striking. But yeah, there are probably smaller reasons too like you mentioned, but I still think the introduction of the downloads compared to the physical is the biggest one. At least when radio used to bum songs in the past the naturally reducing stock (and occasional 'deletion' of it by the record companies) meant it didn't outstay its welcome too much. And the more hardcore fans of the main alternative genres (rock and dance) just don't seem to care about individual downloads. Lack of exclusive content (B-sides, etc.) doesn't help either. I do wonder if I'm just partaking in rose-tinted nostalgia and ignoring all the bad aspects of the late 90s/early 00s climate (*cough* Westlife and their 14 #1s). Maybe you are more naturally inclined to prefer the style of the chart when you started listening as it's the first you knew and therefore seems to be the "right way".
