Favourite Chart Battles
Except some moron ruined it in the iTunes thread like an hour before saying Chipmunk tweeted he was #2, and it was fairly obvious to deduce the order from that  So it wasn't even remotely exciting for me. Maybe it might have been otherwise though. And I disagree totally on Rage vs Joe - Joe was catching up all week and many people thought he'd overtake from the physical sales (as it was the weekend before Xmas which is always big for shopping) over the weekend. Indeed, if it wasn't for the Rage "Download Day" on that Saturday, Joe surely would have won. But clearly you had some special intuition on the matter, or maybe as I more suspect you're simply biased as you just said you didn't enjoy the songs - which is fair enough. To be honest, I think chart battles used to be more exciting back in the physical days. The media used to really get involved with them and the acts involved really went all out to get the #1 spot. Victoria Beckham was working her butt off doing signings up and down the country the week of her battle with Spiller. These days it can be close but there's no extra effort involved to try and snatch it. Rage vs Joe was the only recent one anything like that. Plus, in those days I didn't know midweeks either - only the small bits the press reported!

Favourite Chart Battles
THIS. I can't believe you're the first to mention it! Was absolutely amazing for them to get beaten like that. Literally a :cheer: moment. Joe vs Rage was also very exciting indeed. Those two are the big ones for me. I was excited for Xmas 2002 at first (Girls Aloud vs One True Voice), too, but then the first midweeks came in and Girls Aloud were miles ahead which took out any excitement somewhat! I don't really remember following the Xmas 2003 battle. And let's not forget the 1999 "Spice Girls" battle - Emma vs Geri! Emma lost despite having the superior song (although I do love Lift Me Up, and the video is hilariously awful), it was very close in the early sales but Geri totally thrashed her by the end of the week... plus Spiller vs Truesteppers in 2000 was obviously a great one and was quite prominent in the media that week too. Blur vs Oasis was before I followed the charts so hard to call it a favourite of mine, really, plus neither song was close to being the best by either, anyway.

Predict: Jennifer Lopez feat. Pitbull - On The Floor
Looking at what is out in March, I think it does have a good shot at #1. The Wanted will surely be #1 two weeks before but they'll be heavily front-loaded and by their third week will be selling much smaller amounts. Her biggest competition at the moment is Katy B, but that will probably do similar to her last two singles if anything. I think #1 with about 60k. I don't see it selling huge amounts just because it's J-Lo and she's not the big selling power she once was. But it's a great song, for sure. If something big comes along from nowhere though (which could definitely happen these days) then it might have to settle for top 3.

US iTunes Top 100 [NOV-APR 2011]
Clearly you haven't seen some charts from the early 1990s then! Anyway, it was the general point (that you clearly missed): dance is almost like Europe's "own" music genre, whereas country is like America's "own" music genre. Sometimes they cross over and dance can do well in America, etc, and indeed like now you have much dance-influenced pop music doing well in America, but in terms of "pure" dance its appeal is limited to only the odd hit - at least in the last decade or more - similar to the UK with country music. But if an American was to look at a European chart they'd be thinking exactly the same as you in terms of these faceless dance hits. The number of them is not that significant. And as an aside, the assertion that indie, landfill or otherwise, was ruling the UK charts in the mid-2000s is SO untrue and really gets on my nerves. It's like a myth that's somehow spread and is now taken as fact. Seriously, it was never the case!! Urban music was doing much better than it in those years, for one.

US iTunes Top 100 [NOV-APR 2011]
That was almost ANOTHER LIFETIME though. It's been too long, Shania!!! I miss her out-and-out zany pop. How old was Bray when Shania was dominating the charts? Like 2 years old? Such a weird thought  Anyway, I don't think we should judge America. I'm sure they would find these random "faceless" dance acts that occasionally blow up in Europe only for the act in question to disappear completely (bar a few exceptions) after quite weird too. At least these country artists are consistently making the charts!

The Now Music Thread
Well maybe. It's just rare for songs that missed the top 20 to make it - unless the album has been successful then they sometimes make an exception. That said, the chart turnover has gotten slower (again!) compared to the last couple of years, so I wouldn't be that surprised if one or two of these "almost hits" like Clare Maguire, Avril Lavigne, Noah and the Whale, etc. did make it. Either that or there'll be loads of double appearances which I really hope doesn't happen as I HATE them - totally unnecessary 99% of the time!

The Now Music Thread
The text is lovely. I know they often use red these days but the blue outlining makes it look a bit more different compared to others. The rest is meh though. I don't like these throwing objects in the background they do now compared to the 90s/early 00s ones that was often just a "pure" background but still looked different each time. I think Jessie J will have both songs on it, but I doubt anyone else will - despite there being several acts that could possibly do it (JLS, Rihanna, Adele, Alexis Jordan, Tinie Tempah, Far East Movement). I do hope Jonjo is right and Noah and the Whale make it on (for the sake of some variety) but they haven't exactly peaked that high. Maybe if their album does really well they might put them on though - they have done things like that in the past. Some of the songs from November/December are going to be ridiculously old by the time this album is out - but that's what happens when the gap between the Winter and Spring one is so long. I will buy it, anyway, just to continue my vast collection, but I doubt I'll enjoy it much. I wish I didn't start buying them so I don't feel obligated to, tbh, but I have almost 60 of the damn things now :nocheer:

LEAST Favourite of 2006s best selling singles
I would have thought you'd be used to hip hop going out early in these kind of things. Especially when it doesn't have the female-sung hook. I'm quite surprised how far most of the "landfill indie" has made it though. But it looks like most of them will go in the next few rounds, except perhaps Orson, which is funny because they're easily the worst of them all IMO. Dire. Oh right. People really shouldn't use posters' real names on this forum - talk about confusing for people like me who generally don't have a clue (unless it happens to be mentioned in their username, but even that might not be their real name for all I know!!)

LEAST Favourite of 2006s best selling singles
That song has had loads of votes in previous rounds though. In fact, in one round it had like four votes and was only a few away from the song in the lead. Much to my dismay as I absolutely ADORE it. But it won't win on this site, so don't worry if you're trying to draw attention to the fact it has 0 votes because you don't like it, lol.

You do realise it's Chasing Cars on this poll, not Set The Fire To The Third Bar, right? Just checking :D ...Who is Jamie?

iTunes Chart: March 2011
Oh I'll definitely join you in hoping. I'm not just coming on here to p*** on the fire because I hate that kind of music - it's actually my fave genre :D I don't think an old band really can start any revival. I mean, maybe it's possible, but throughout history when that kind of music makes a comeback it's ALWAYS started by a completely new band. I guess it's easier for the public/the music industry to get excited about a new band than it is an old band, though. And a new band brings with it something fresh rather than the same old, same old sound. Eventually, the public probably will get bored of this kind of dance-influenced pop and urban music, but will it be guitars they turn to? Maybe. 2011 is/will be a pretty huge year in terms of chart alternative acts releasing in general, though - Radiohead, PJ Harvey have released new albums, The Strokes, R.E.M., Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Blink-182, U2 are releasing very soon/supposedly this year. Then there's other stuff like Elbow, Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Fleet Foxes, Noah and the Whale etc. This will probably only be reflected in the albums chart though, and maybe in the lower reaches of the singles

LEAST Favourite of 2006s best selling singles
Oh gosh, you're right! Do people even think before they vote?! :drama: Voodoo Child is magnificent! Seriously, can we just give the crown to Rihanna now? I'm actually disgusted with the way this poll is going. And 2 of the songs currently on 3 votes are also amazing!

LEAST Favourite of 2006s best selling singles
I don't think 2006 is worse than 2007. There are still a lot of bad songs left here, though, but that's more because people have been voting so silly and kicking out some really good songs. But there are still 9 songs here that are LOVELY. In 2007, for me, a lot of the $h!t went out early like it deserved, compared to 2006 when a lot of good songs and "average" ones have been going out early, while the $h!t still remains. But that's my opinion, obviously, which doesn't count for much since I don't think I voted Chasing Cars in 2007 - I neither love it or hate it, although I do think it's probably the worst Snow Patrol song and I like them quite a bit. But I'd probably only get 'round to voting it when like maybe six songs that I really dislike have been removed from this list. And yeah, maybe we will have to include songs in both years now  I'll just hope that JCB Song can become the "Chasing Cars of 2005" - that song didn't deserve to go out in Round 3 at all

iTunes Chart: March 2011
It will only come back when new bands arrive and start doing well chart-wise (like Suede in 1993, The Strokes in 2001, or Franz Ferdinand in 2004). The only one we've had of that is The Vaccines (let's not call Beady Eye a new band when they're clearly not) and they didn't really do that well considering they were supposed to be the "saviours!111" as I read in one paper not long ago. And a lot of these are down to coincidence, anyway - Two Door Cinema Club were on an advert, Arcade Fire and Mumford & Sons from the BRITs. There have been a few big name comebacks like Elbow, Foo Fighters, White Lies that were never really going to miss the chart. Neon Trees were big in America and the song itself is very poppy, anyway. I'm surprised that didn't do better, actually, considering. Beady Eye still have the Oasis fanbase, The Wombats are one of the few indie acts semi chart-relevant before this month. So I hate to be the one to p*** on the fire (again), but I fail to see any comeback - I think the latter is more accurate :D

LEAST Favourite of 2006s best selling singles
A lot of people "follow" others when they vote. This has already been discussed before. Chasing Cars went out early in 2007 because it instantly picked up a few votes and then people saw that, remembered they don't like it, and so voted for it to help get it out quicker. Now that Chasing Cars is getting so few votes people aren't voting to get it out quicker and rather doing that to other songs with more votes (like SexyBack!! :manson:)

LEAST Favourite of 2006s best selling singles
SexyBack gone?! Such a disgrace :( How can that horrible dirge What Goes Around do so well in 2007 but this far superior song barely makes it past halfway? Rihanna - Unfaithful! I swear to God if either of her two songs make it in the top three I'm really going to lose my faith in this site!! SOS is admittedly not as bad but it still defines LIMP.

Longest time for a song to reach number one
To be fair, the top 100 was published at the time when Jennifer Rush was charting, and it had an extra week at #97 before starting its top 75 run. So chart purists can at least be somewhat satisfied that using the same chart size comparison it is officially tied with Telephone in terms of time taken (both 17 weeks). Think Twice didn't have any extra weeks between 76-100 before starting its top 75 run, though, so it still stays on 16 even with that. Although I'm not sure if the top 100 was even published at the time? I think it started from 1995 onwards (Think Twice started its run in 1994) when it was top 200? That's what Zobbel has, anyway. It was reduced back to top 75 in 1991, after being top 100 for several years before that in the Record Mirror.

iTunes Chart: March 2011
I'm disappointed to see Kanye down at #38. I guess the video effect is officially over :( I guess I shouldn't be complaining too much considering I was expecting it to come in at around #61 or something a few weeks ago when it looked like the video was seemingly never going to come in time to have any impact. Also, it is indeed good to see I Need A Doctor climbing up. It's growing on me a lot and I quite like it now. Though hopefully it won't outpeak Forgot About Dre (#7 in 2000) as the quality gap between these two songs is still massive :) And good for Noah and the Whale too! Maybe they can go top 20 next week when the album is released (probably stretching a bit, but oh well). Apart from that: Zzzzzzzz.

iTunes Chart: March 2011
The top 10 is hardly full of R&B and hip hop. Some people really have problems with genre classifications on this site  It's full of pop music, as usual. It nearly always is. It is a really bad top 10, though. But then I always seem to think that and then a couple of months later I'm looking back thinking "oh, it wasn't so bad"... I remember how much I hated the charts in 2004 (at the time) but looking back I think they were actually quite good!

iTunes Chart: February [III]
GO DEBELAH MORGAN. Her one hit wonder spirit will always live on due to the perfect nature of that song for these kind of things. Lovely. It was out in May 2002 and got to #1. My best memory of it is, of course, the music video, and me putting a poster of Holly on my wall in an attempt to be all straight acting, even though I didn't really fancy her at all. Memories. I had one of Rachel Stevens, too... Pretty much all her other singles were better, anyway, IMO. Especially Down Boy and State of Mind. And whoever told you that is a moron, lol. Why would you forget it in 2 years?! Silly people. I don't think I've ever forgotten about a song I liked before.

Adele vs. Rihanna ?
This has absolutely nothing to do with the charts. Damn, if only I (still) had moderating powers in this forum...

Predict: End of decade 2010-2019 early predictions
Justin Bieber will definitely have the biggest single of the decade. I also think he'll have another one in the top 10, and another three more between 11-50. The Black Eyed Peas will also be in the top 10 with their modern twist on Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. I myself hope for a big 90s revival - some like Flo Rida have already started it (see Sugar) - as the 80s are getting tired now. I don't think reality TV will be as dominant as it was last decade, frankly. It will still exist but the days of it being guaranteed million-selling #1s will probably come to a close very shortly - especially when X Factor inevitably wanes (which could happen this year) and I doubt any other reality TV show will ever be able to match it in terms of success. The public are getting tired anyway, if any new show did come it would need a fresher format. And it's not necessarily that hard to predict sales trends - the more astute person could have predicted the decline in sales at the beginning of the 2000s by noticing the massive drop from 1999 to 2000 and linking it to the opening of sites like Napster, thus predicting an even further drop. Not necessarily obvious, but someone with a more of a keen mind could definitely have predicted it (and I wouldn't be surprised if some did, frankly). Going by what we see at the start of this decade now it's probably not unrealistic to link streaming into the UK charts somehow. I know there were rumours about it being incorporated recently, but I believe a spokesperson from the OCC said they wouldn't do it unless they felt it was absolutely necessary in the way people are consuming music is changing. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw that change in the next 8 years, really.

LEAST Favourite of 2006s best selling singles
You people are voting so crazy! Smile, Voodoo Child, Irreplaceable and Sexyback?! Those are some of the best songs left :arrr: MECK out please. This. Irreplaceable is incredible - one of the best R&B singles of 2006! Lovely. And it's so catchy, too! How can you call it dull?! Well, I guess it's all opinion, but I find it hard to believe how someone could listen to it and be bored. Although I have a HUGE weakness for these kind of female confidence type anthems - like how my fave Whitney single is It's Not Right But It's Okay  I can tell I'm not going to be happy with the result this year. Unless Maneater wins, it will surely be a disaster! The best song here is Crazy but I know that pigs will fly before that wins.

US Billboard Charts Analysis Thread
You're both wrong. His music will mature and thus so will his fanbase. It's a simple process that we've seen many times before. Do you not remember little teenage Justin Timberlake starting out in the 90s as a member of 'N Sync making cheesy pop music, and being the favourites of thousands of teenage girls (particularly in America)? Fast forward to 2002 and he was a solo star making urban-influenced pop music; fast forward to 2006 and he was making mature dance-pop/electropop. By that point he had appealed to a whole different audience, as well as keeping some of his older fans with a more mature taste in music beyond cheesy teen pop. IF Justin Bieber does fade it will be nothing to do with his fans growing up and dropping him in favour of someone else, but more to do with the fact that his music may move somewhere less commercial, or a natural fading because his songs are not good enough in the eyes of the consumer, etc. It would not be to do with him still trying to make cheesy pop music and still trying to appeal to 13-year old girls when he's a 21-year old man. That's simply not going to happen. And I doubt it's anything to do with boasting about chart positions, anyway - simply more sales and thus more $$$ from naive teenage girls who will buy anything he releases. It's not that surprising as this regularly happens to British acts - I recall La Roux and Florence + The Machine debuting lower in the top 200 with their albums before they got bigger pushes there. I presume they manage to debut there solely due to more "alternative" circles in the US, like Pitchfork - an American-based website which recently gave James Blake's album a very sparkling review - and possible small amounts of radio support from more leftfield stations. (P.S. Why is this page so stretched? Grr. Very annoying!!!)
