When did you first discover midweeks?
Pretty sure it was around 2001/2002 when I used to lurk on Dotmusic forums - never posted though as I was far too young. After that they were posted on another forum I went on (nothing to do with this site or the one that came before, though I do think they were probably stolen from here/there!)

Big hits that record companies didn't plan?
But why limit threads? Frankly I think the main purpose of this thread was somewhat boring and way too limited to the download era, which is very recent - and thus everyone knows about stuff like Someone Like You, Make You Feel My Love, Love The Way You Lie etc. That isn't really interesting. I remember this happened with a thread about midweek #1s the other week, too, and then the thread starter came in saying about how it was only supposed to be about #1s that had switched since Radio 1 started their midweek countdown. But the other meaning of the thread that people took to (which was just listing any songs that they remember were midweek #1s but fell off) was far more interesting and led to people finding stuff they might not have known before rather than regurgitating the same boring info. And I'm really not sure what happened with Atomic Kitten - I remember reading once that even the record company were absolutely flabbergasted at its success, because it had been almost totally snubbed by radio  Surely Westlife fans weren't wholly responsible?! And why would the campaign be only get it to #2 anyway? :o

The first 1000 Billboard #1s
I'm jealous of the US #1s list from the 1990s, tbh :( So many amazing R&B songs that didn't get to #1 here because the UK was too busy embracing britpop and then quickly followed that by embracing cheesy pop. I mean, The Boy Is Mine was kept off #1 here by C'est La Vie. That says it ALL (although I do like CLV in a nostalgia way, but there's no doubt that TBIM is the far better song). And I LOVE that The First Night got to #1 in the US, lol, even if it was only because Monica was untouchable in that little period. Amazing song, anyway. Ex-Factor should have got to #1 in the US instead of Doo Wop, though, although Doo Wop is also great. But Ex-Factor is one of the best R&B songs ever. I can't even fault it. It did much better in the UK peak-wise, which is weird :o That said, I far prefer the UK #1s from 2000 onwards, with a few exceptions where the US definitely got it right, but the same can be said for any country, really.

That'd be one way of ensuring this game runs into 2012, I suppose.

LEAST Favourite of 2006s best selling singles
I honestly see more LOGIC in taking them out, and that's not just because I'm loony over the Sugababes song (my last few posts here have been slightly hyperbolic, anyway, I won't break down or something if HITH is left out, it's not even my fave Sugababes song, really)... but frankly I don't want to get into this again after the last time it was discussed went on for like 2 pages. At the end of the day it's up to Dannyboy, and I'll honestly be okay if he leaves them in (although I still might have a SNIFF and wonder whether the 2003 winner really would have won if Sugababes were there :kink:) And sorry, Bray. For some reason I always think of you as Brayfish. I think that was your name when I first 'e-met' you, so to speak, so it's kind of stuck in my head.

LEAST Favourite of 2006s best selling singles
Not as bad as I'd feel having to put up with f***ing Daniel Bedingfield's utter dreck If You're Not The One (which I remember Simon Cowell said was one of the greatest songs in recent years, ENOUGH SAID there :nocheer:) in both 2002 and 2003 when I could be watching a storming pop single by Sugababes romp home to victory instead!! Anyway, I thought Dannyboy had already decided he would take them out from now on. But I'm worried if Chasing Cars gets much further he'll change his mind.

LEAST Favourite of 2006s best selling singles
I have 12 that I really don't like. 8 of these I'm pretty sure won't go far, but 4 of these will probably be in the top 10. What happened to all the Chasing Cars haters, btw? Brayfish must be fuming right now. If it lasts much longer chart_wizard people can start using it as an excuse not to take songs out that have already featured/ing in another game  Get it out for the sake of Hole in the Head being in the 2003 game, people!!

Do videos help chart positions?
There's an obvious bias towards certain kind of acts, though. For example, Chris Brown is currently sitting at #2 on the TV airplay chart, yet Adele is all the way down at #19 and I believe that is her peak so far (or at least I certainly know it hasn't got much higher than that, as I check the chart every week). Why is Chris Brown getting so much more play over an act that is far more successful than him at the moment, chart-wise? It's a bias of genre, simple as that. But you're right, somewhat, but it depends on the music channel. The Box has always been biased towards pop, dance, R&B and didn't give alternative stuff THAT much attention even when it was somewhat successful between 2004-2006. Acts like Arctic Monkeys never got as much rotation there as the likes of Pussycat Dolls, Black Eyed Peas etc. despite being just as successful chart-wise. But there were other channels back then like B4 (which doesn't exist anymore, I believe) and they were much more varied with the music they played. Chart Show TV never used to be so bad for that, either, not sure what it's like now as I never watch music channels anymore, but it used to be my favourite around 2003. They'll play an "indie" song if it gets to #1, yes, but they wouldn't play it anywhere near as much as they would an R&B or pop #1 single, basically.

POOR INFERNAL. Lasting only round longer than Cascada is not justice. Should have been at least 10. You mean: do people seriously like this *BEEP*? And the answer is, yes. They do.

I like Infernal :( The beat is great. And OMG, 4 votes for Crazy? Are people just being ridiculous and voting for it 'cos it was so big? Madness!

iTunes Chart: February 2011 (II)
Right! And there wasn't much sticking around in 2003 - it actually lasted somewhat decently for a #1 back then! But in the modern context that wouldn't particularly be a long-running #1, so I'd like more #1s like that these days please. Although other #1s from 2003 like t.A.T.u. and the Black Eyed Peas stuck around in the top 10 for much longer once they dropped off, but then they fell faster once they left the top 10 so it all evens out in the end, I guess. EDIT: Actually what am I talking about with t.A.T.u.! I just checked and they only lasted two more weeks in the top 10 after! Shouldn't rely on my memory.

What's with the wow? You make it sound like I'm abnormal! We were actually quite behind with it, I remember being jealous for ages because loads of my friends had it and we didn't, and then we finally managed to make my parents cave in and get it in the end.

iTunes Chart: February 2011 (II)
I don't like songs hanging around for ages either but I love long-running #1s! I hope to watch someone break Bryan Adams' record of 16 consecutive weeks one day (as long as they drop down the charts post haste immediately after). So for me, an ideal #1 run would be something like 1-1-1-2-5-10-12-16-19-25-36-35-40... a few weeks at #1, not dropping TOO fast afterwards, but not TOO slow either. This is actually a real #1 run, btw, anyone guess which song? :funky: (it's not that difficult, really)

Who is this person who keeps voting for Irreplacable? Get some taste FFS. I voted earlier but I actually forgot what for... I thought it was My Chemical Romance but they have 0 votes! Oh no, what have I done  I hope I didn't accidentally click on Voodoo Child as that's one of the best songs left!!

You're probably right there about Alizée - I remember hearing it quite a bit back then somewhere, but I can't specifically remember where, but I didn't listen much to the radio back then, anyway. They definitely helped LOADS of pop acts, though. It's definitely not a coincidence that during the peak of its popularity the charts were quite pop-dominated. I think on a similar case, Las Ketchup were also shunned by radio, but rotated constantly on pretty much every music channel. Was hard to escape it at one point! Probably their most famous is the Spice Girls, though, as they were apparently the first channel to ever play Wannabe, and then it quickly became their most-requested video. I'm not sure whether I quite believe that but I've heard it from quite a few sources - I just find it hard to believe they were ever big enough to kick start such a phenomenom :o I didn't watch The Box back then being only 5 years old, plus we only first got digital TV in 1999! Indeed, I used to watch their new music show every week (on Friday afternoons, iirc!) and usually switched over to The Box whenever I was allowed to watch TV :D

Retrochart - W/E 19-02-2005
Yeah, the Box did indeed use to sometimes be able to make a hit almost on their own back then. Although they had a pretty appalling hit rate as I remember loads of complete and utter flops they pushed like Northern Line, Boom!!, Girl Thing, Sara Gorge - a haven of late 90s/early 00s flopstars! I'm pretty sure it wasn't supported by Radio 1, so it was probably one of the last songs that The Box could actually take some credit for in making a hit, I guess. It was indeed. Although I don't think she was credited, was she? And yeah, I do recall some people having big expectations for Lovefreekz. Soul Central (#41 on this chart) was also widely tipped to be a #1 hit by some but only got to #6. Then there was Sunset Strippers only a couple of weeks after this chart - a lot of "predicted" #1 dance hits in early 2005, but none of them quite made it! Those damn Elvis re-releases screwed everyone up :kink:

US iTunes Top 100 [NOV-APR 2011]
They give awards to whoever they think is the best choice... although you have to bear in mind the panel is generally quite 'old' (at least compared to the average iTunes user) so tend to reward stuff that's more MoR [for want of a better word] rather than necessarily loving whatever is currently topping the latest Billboard Hot 100 chart. Anyone who actually expected Bieber to win is a moron anyway. Although he had a better chance than Drake - rap never wins any of the major awards at the Grammys unless it crosses over into more soul or R&B territories as well like The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Lady Antebellum being the biggest winners was a joke though. Nice reminder that the Grammys are total rubbish (just in case Taylor Swift last year didn't already). Give me the BRITs any day - at least we don't have yawnsome country music winning anything.

Arcade Fire are now #60! :o This could be their first top 40 hit since 2005.

iTunes Chart: February 2011 (II)
Pretty sure they're allowed to perform what they want, lol. I remember others doing current releases in previous years, too. Although Mumford & Sons doing an album track was possibly one of the most bizarre performance choices I've seen at the BRITs (though it doesn't seem to have mattered too much as The Cave & LLM look like they're going to explode anyway). Hopefully The Cave will get a new peak this week. It's ridiculous that it only charted at #31 considering how big it was in everything except peak. And tbh, Arcade Fire don't have any real big hit of 2010, so did it really matter what they performed?
-
iTunes Chart: February 2011 (II)
Mumford & Sons up to #40 and #46 with The Cave and Little Lion Man without even performing them  Arcade Fire at #184! Really glad they won 2 BRITs - unbelievable how big they are these dayz, what with the Grammys too the other day :o

Retrochart - W/E 19-02-2005
The Dana Rayne song was very weird - it sounded an awful lot like the XTM song from 2003 and even the video was similar (in fact I'm sure the same animated guy was in both :/)... were the two related somehow? (apart from by the fact that I hated both!) I remember it was on The Box loads back then, though, so I wasn't *too* surprised it was a hit - though you're right it is totally random looking back! rPpT4M_xYhc

Retrochart - W/E 19-02-2005
The charts were very odd at this time, trust me. Sales were pitifully low and there were regularly about half of a dozen new entries in the top 10 every week, fanbase acts thrived, and there were some bizarre top 10 hits. Numb/Encore probably could have peaked higher if it wasn't for that fact - it's hard to climb when there's loads of new entries entering above you every week. Uniting Nations kinda suffered from that, too - they only peaked at #8 I think but it was a lot more popular than the peak suggests...
-
Retrochart - W/E 19-02-2005
Well, it was much easier to get top 10 in those days *shrug* The most random top 10 hit from this chart was surely Hanson (who got to #10) - you wouldn't think they had a top 10 hit as recently as 2005 when most people associate them as a mere memory of 1997! I remember all of them except #53 (which doesn't even ring a bell artist-wise) but then I did use to watch the music channels like a hawk back then. Some really terrible stuff here, though... crappy Busted-wannabes, Fierce Girl, Uniting Nations, Good Charlotte, Destiny's Child (love them but this song was TERRIBLE, along with most of that album), and the dreaded Elvis re-releases!! My faves: 05.Brian McFadden & Delta Goodrem - Almost Here 06.Doves - Black and White Town 08.Ashanti - Only U 09.The Chemical Brothers - Galvanize 10.Ciara feat. Petey Pablo - Goodies 12.Daniel Bedingfield - Wrap My Words Around You 15.Xzibit - Hey Now (Mean Muggin') 17.Lucie Silvas - Breathe In 19.Bloc Party - So Here We Are/Positive Tension 23.The Kills - The Good Ones 28.Ashlee Simpson - La La 30.Scissor Sisters - Filthy/Gorgeous 34.Rooster - Staring At The Sun 35.Lemar - If There's Any Justice 36.The Beautiful South - This Will Be Our Year 45.Kylie Minogue - I Believe In You 46.Mylo - Destroy Rock And Roll 49.Feeder - Tumble And Fall 50.The Killers - Somebody Told Me {2005} 55.Kasabian - Cutt Off 56.Commander Tom - Attention! 58.Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten 59.Nelly & Christina Aguilera - Tilt Ya Head Back 61.Ian Brown - Time Is My Everything 63.Girls Aloud - I'll Stand By You 66.Gwen Stefani - What You Waiting For? 68.The Wedding Present - I'm From Further North Than You 70.Erasure - Breathe

Not that witty, I'm afraid, Eric. Sorry to hear about your Grammys disappointment, though!! *hug* I actually just checked and one of the people on that collaboration is Herbie Hancock, who the Grammys love (he even beat the beloved Amy to AOTY in 2008!) - not my cup of tea, though. It does also have the fabulous India.Arie on it though :o *youtubes*
