  1. They really need to get rid of the airplay aspect of this award. We already know that radio is completely biased towards X Factor acts, hence why so many of them are up for this award. Olly Murs, Cheryl Cole and Alexandra Burke wouldn't be up without airplay and they can be replaced with better and more representative songs. Your Song and The Flood would have been up if it was based on sales only, but I guess they didn't have enough time to build airplay compared to the others. Not sure why Pack Up isn't here though - it's the 6th biggest-selling British single of 2010 and surely its airplay wasn't that bad to knock it out completely? And they should really ban the X Factor's winners single from being nominated every year - it makes the award look even more of a joke than it is anyway. Couldn't give a toss if it's the best-selling British song of 2010 - not like it sold on its own merit like the rest of the songs listed. In terms of a winner that really represents 2010 in mainstream British music, I don't think you could really argue against Tinie Tempah. But this award is always about who has the most obsessive stans so a shoot-out between The Wanted, Alexandra Burke, Olly Murs etc is more likely. Sigh. My favourite here is probably Taio Cruz or Florence though, but both have no chance.
  2. The Cranberries have their highest peak at #13, with two singles. Neither of which are Zombie, Linger or Dreams... but the much less remembered songs Salvation and Promises. And Beck's highest charting single is The New Pollution at #14, which managed to outpeak the song that is by far his most famous, Loser, by one mere position.
  3. Well, I'd rather read one post that's straight to the point and still useful, than one that I have to trawl through god knows how much crap just to get to the main idea of it :P Don't get me wrong, I like to read a lengthy post that's well-written and well-argued, too, but ones that just feel like waffling really do just p*** me off. And there's really no need to go on about how Justin Bieber doesn't deserve to be hated. I've never disagreed with that (actually I agree with you, and think he is hated for stupid reasons, but then so is pretty much every person in the media, at the end of the day). All I was saying is that there's no need to feel sorry for him because of it, just like there's no need to feel sorry for anyone else in the spotlight for the same reasons - unless it's pretty clear that it's affecting them. These people really do have thicker skin than you think. P.S. That poll you linked to only has 162 votes. That's not a strong enough sample size to draw any real conclusions from it :D
  4. You are going off on a complete tangent now, waffling on about nothing (as you do about 80% of the time). First of all, to clarify, I didn't put haters in brackets because I think Justin Bieber is widely loved. I did it because I think it's a stupid word and implies intense feelings that most people who make the nasty comments really don't have. I do it pretty much every time I use it (though preferably I don't use it at all, but sometimes it's necessary like it was when I was replying to you). Secondly, EVERYBODY in the media gets at least some hatred. It comes with the territory. When you get put out to millions of people all the time not everyone is going to love you. I did feel somewhat sorry for Susan Boyle because it was pretty clear she couldn't really deal with it at first, hence why there were stories about her supposed "outbursts" not long after she entered Britain's Got Talent. I'm not sure what her situation is now but hopefully she's better at ignoring it than she was back then. But really, going back to Bieber. He entered the music business because he wanted to be a singer. He gets to perform to thousands of people every time he goes on stage, doing what makes him happy. Yeah, he gets some nasty comments, but somehow I don't think he lets them get to him too much when he's happy doing what he wants to do in his life every time he goes up to perform. If anything, it probably motivates him to prove them wrong. So there's really no need to feel sorry for him of all people, when there are people out there less fortunate and less happy.
  5. You are actually hilarious.
  6. Why on earth would you feel sorry for him? He's living his dream, is massively successful, making loads of money and he's still only a teenager  The words get a grip spring to mind. You seem more affected by Justin Bieber's "haters" than he probably is himself. People who are in the spotlight expect to get a bit of hatred and they don't let it affect them. They have to learn to develop a thicker skin at the end of the day. Anyway, I voted: British Breakthrough: Think: Tinie Tempah Want: Mumford & Sons International Breakthrough: Think: Justin Bieber Want: The National
  7. Justin Timberlake. Such a bloody boring single. Yes, but all the males only got there due to lack of decent competition. Watch them all bomb out #10-7 now! It's like I said before, the inoffensive all-male songs make it this far, while better ones go out earlier. And I have to be typical BJ and vote out all these male songs now because of this fact :(
  8. Primal Scream only got their first ever top five single with 'Country Girl' in 2006 which is a little odd, but obviously it was their "comeback"... still I doubt it'll go down as a memorable song by them (in fact it was rather forgettable in the first place in my opinion :D) Also, Kool & The Gang's highest charting single is not 'Celebration', 'Get Down On It', 'Jungle Boogie', 'Ladies Night', 'Fresh' etc... but an AA-side 'Joanna/Tonight' which peaked at #2 in 1984. LL Cool J got to #1 with 'Ain't Nobody' which would be quite far down on a list of songs you'd associate with him, I would imagine. AC/DC's highest charting (by a fraction) is 'Heatseeker' - #12 in 1988. I think we can probably add Jay-Z's #1 with 'Run This Town' to this list in a few years. Probably a bit too early now though.
  9. Looks like having too many Katy Perry songs in the final split the vote for her songs. Hopefully 'Firework' will crash out soon but I doubt it. Oh, and a bit out of date, but I really like 'Ego' - by far the best Saturdays song. Just wish the rest of their songs were of that quality rather than dull wishy-washy crap like 'Missing You' :puke2:
  10. Beyonce & Shakira. If this makes the top 10 then it truly is a massive fail on Buzzjack's part.
  11. I swear this exact same discussion about album tracks occurs in this thread like every 3 weeks or something.
  12. The only reason Kanye has lost a connection with the British public because he hasn't released very obvious hits. 'Runaway' is a f***ing amazing song, one of the best of last year no doubt, but it was never a hit record, at least not in the current climate. Same with 'Power'. Unlike Chris Brown, Ashlee Simpson, Joss Stone etc he can come back quite easily if he wants. It's up to him really. He's a big enough name that he can still have hits in the future. It just depends if he wants to make a more commercial record next time akin to Graduation or something. If he doesn't he can carry on fine and still be relatively successful with his massive fanbase. That's the difference, really... those artists have had their days of commercial success and they're over. Kanye's days of radio and chart hits aren't necessarily over if he doesn't want them to be IMO. But I don't think he really gives a $h!t about that stuff, so it's whatever really
  13. Don't forget Joss Stone and the 2007 BRIT Awards :( And I'm not worried about Kanye's UK success quite yet. Though if 'All Of The Lights' flops then I'll seriously start to wonder what the f*** is wrong with country as it's so much more commercial than 'Power' and 'Runaway'. Video out next week, too, will be epic no doubt :D Will hopefully take off from then. (Jeez, I sound like a typical iLoon now. Oh well, better Kanye than The Saturdays)
  14. Telephone vs Only Girl final 2 is obvious. Telephone FTW this time please. Only Girl already won that other competition I forgot a few weeks ago.
  15. No it doesn't. It implies that Estelle managed to get one single that caught on with the public but none of her other material particularly did. Loads of artists only have one hit (and not because they had a big name attached to it) and then the rest flops. Estelle is the same as all of them. 'American Boy' did well because it had a very strong melody, a great beat etc. Kanye helped it to get airplay (although I still think such an obvious commercial hit would have been picked up regardless anyway) probably but the rest was due to a very solid pop song, no doubt. If anything the song was successful because of will.i.am, not Kanye! And at the end of the day, people would be singing the chorus to the song, which had absolutely nothing to do with Kanye.
  16. "About time"? Are people so used to acts getting to #1 with their first or second single these days that anyone who has to wait until their 2nd(!!!) album has had a long wait?
  17. But most artists (in the case of hip hop, not dance) are featured on lesser parts. Should Flo Rida really get equal credit for a #1 hit where he only raps one verse compared to one of his own where he raps three different verses? He's done less work at the end of the day. His contribution to the song IS less compared to his own credits, regardless of whether he did anything in "helping" the song to #1 (which is very much opinion anyway). Same with Kanye West. Plus many featured artists don't join in the promo events etc, so again they're doing lesser work. Like I saw Alexandra Burke perform Start Without You on various different shows a few times, but I don't recall Laza Morgan being there in any of them. He may have been there in other performances I didn't see. Dance features are kind of a different matter entirely though... but if you're going to treat hip hop ones as "secondary" you have to do it to every other genre too, I suppose, for the sake of fairness. Of course, it really varies in hip hop, too. Someone singing the chorus is arguably more "important" than someone just doing a random rap verse. It is difficult, really. Likewise, there's people like will.i.am who has his own bit on the song and produced it (like he did on OMG). Just too many different ways of "featuring". We need to introduce different words for each kind to make it easier to know how to deal with them, IMO  I say this half-jokingly, but it is kinda stupid how this one whole term has evolved to be used in such varying degrees of contribution to songs. Oh well.
  18. Yeah, we're lucky that Akon isn't even bigger here, to the point where he can get stuff to #1 just by featuring on it :o But seriously, the only reason there hasn't been that many is because it's only really been a prolific trend since the rise of hip hop artists in the charts. Dance artists have always used featuring a heck of a lot, too, but they used to nearly always be more unknowns (who sometimes went into their own career afterwards, like Tina Cousins and perhaps most famously, Seal, but they were still unknown at the time which is the point). Compared to hip hop artists who love to pop up on other people's singles, and now even pop artists are adding rappers to their own singles to get cross-genre appeal, and then there's rappers who need somebody (preferably female these days, with first preference being Rihanna) to sing the hook. So reallly nobody has a significant amount because nobody's had time to build up that many featured #1s yet. I wouldn't be surprised if someone had quite a collection in about five years from now. Hot tips would be Rihanna and David Guetta. The former is more likely than the latter, who will probably be old hat by 2016 in favour of the next 'producer of the moment'. Maybe will.i.am too? I dunno. I also anticipate the next generation of rent-a-rappers to follow in the footsteps of Akon, Pitbull, Flo Rida, Lil' Wayne and Nicki Minaj, but alas their tactics didn't get them many (or indeed any at all in some cases) #1 hits so who knows! Anyway, I agree it isn't a problem, but I do think it should be put with an asterisk next to it though, so it's made clear that it's not on the same level as someone who has all their #1s hit on their own back...
  19. superbossanova posted a post in a topic in UK Charts
+7 Ellie Goulding - Your Song +5 Olly Murs - Thinking Of Me +3 Cheryl Cole - The Flood +2 Willow - Whip My Hair +1 Black Eyed Peas - The Time (Dirty Bit) -1 Wretch 32 feat. L - Traktor
  20. EDIT: Oops! Never mind. Just saw JakeWild already posted them
  21. The Zobbel site has PDF files that have top 200 runs contained in them for each year. He only has them up to read on the site since about 1999 I think though, though you can buy earlier ones for £2.50... mind you, the top 200 didn't start being published until the mid-90s anyway, non? So you'll be only able to get top 200 runs for the last few Bond themes wherever you go.
  22. +5 Wretch 32 ft. L · 'Traktor' +4 Katy B ft. Ms. Dynamite · 'Lights On' +3 Britney Spears · 'Hold It Against Me' +2 Adele · 'Rolling In The Deep' +1 Rihanna ft. Drake · 'What's My Name' -1 Diddy - Dirty Money ft. Skylar Grey · 'Coming Home' -2 JLS ft. Tinie Tempah · 'Eyes Wide Shut' -3 Bruno Mars · 'Grenade' -4 Aggro Santos ft. Kimberly Walsh· 'Like U Like' -5 Jessie J · 'Do It Like A Dude' Pretty easy this week. 5 good songs, 5 crap songs. Wretch 32 is bound to come last so he needs all the help he can gets.
  23. The Vaccines will be mega front-loaded probably... their last song was (on a smaller scale, though, considering it never made in the top 100). Hopefully I'm wrong though as it'd be a massive success for the genre in terms of charts for a new indie band to get a big hit, and pretty much exactly what it needs...
  24. 'Beautiful Liar' again. Please don't vote out 'Patience'!! It's in my top 3 of the songs left. Why can't you pick on 'Rule The World' instead? :(
  25. She already practically sounds American musically to me so I'd say her chances of success in the US are quite good. The hype isn't really because she's supposed to be amazing. It's just she's current, commercial etc, so she is the "safest" choice in terms of finding a big chart star, and then if she makes it the same types that hyped her can go bigging themselves up, and the label goes raking in the £££. Everybody wins. Unless she fails then there'll probably be a few red faces. So there's nothing to get - either you like her or you don't, really.
