German Top 100 Singles/Albums Chart
Yan's German chart comments - Issue date 03.07 Finally the (too) long reign of Lady Gaga at the summit of the German charts has ended, with Emilliana Torini claiming the throne after the steady and persistent climb of her "Jungle Drum". The boost from the physical sales should also be taken into account. I think that we should all give the song the title "the most surprising hit of the year". :cheer: As last week, the top three is once again occupied by women, while the guy presence can be find as low as the #4, where rock band Linkin Park chart with their latest single "New Divide". The hit is taken from the soundtrack of blockbuster Transformers 2, and as the chart does not cover the period of the film's cinema release perhaps the song has a potential to climb further in the next weeks. For now "New Divide" matches the #4 peak of both "Numb/Encore" and "What I'Ve Done", the most successful songs of Linkin Park in Germany. Following two mega hits and one top 20 single, Katy Perry releases her fourth offering from her debut album. And despite that "Waking Up In Las Vegas" does not sets the charts on fire, I'm too tempted by its appeal to say a bad word for the song. A 33 position is fair enough. We should also not ignore the 48-38 climb of Gossip's "Heavy Cross" as this is still its second week in the countdown and it is only on downloads. Perhaps a top 30 placing is not out of reach? After the surprising success of "Love etc." in Germany several months ago, legends Pet Shop Boys are ready with the follow-up. Although "Did You See Me Coming?" manages only to enter the top 50 at #49, it is still a success for the guys as the album is already out and we are living in the digital era after all. At #55 we can find the failed attempt of Bob Sinclar to make a new hit, which is no surprising as the song lacks the appeal of some of his former records. And at #58, despite hitting the #1 spot in UK, Dizzee Rascal's "Bonkers" charts outside the top 50 in Germany. And let say a word for Demi Lovato, as the next Disney princess is no Miley Cyrus at least for now and enters the charts at the low #82.

German Top 100 Singles/Albums Chart
Yan's German chart comments - Issue date 26.06 In one of the saddest weeks for the pop world ever, Lady Gaga remains for a 13th non-consecutive week atop the German charts. The only challenge comes from Cassandra Steen, who, however, fails to knock the Lady from the #1 position, despite the #4-#2 jump of "Stadt". Perhaps next week she will manage it. Finally, we have some fresh blood in the top 5, with the new entry of David Guetta's "When Love Takes Over" at #4. A perfect summer anthem and one of the most beautiful songs currently, the single quite deservingly becomes the biggest hit of the French DJ in Germany, beating with ease the #36 peak of "Love is Gone". Apart from "Dilemma", her duet with Nelly, and "Lose My Breath" with Destiny's Child, the single is also one of the most successful songs of Kelly Rowland in the country. It is great also to see that A-Ha manage to avert the downward trend of "Foot Of The Mountain", after the arrival of the album of the same name at #1 in the albums charts. Speaking of summer hits, the second new entry belongs to US rapper Pitbull, who similarly like Flo Rida, has made a catchy summer dance hit, and now is reaping the benefits as "I Know You Want Me” enters the countdown at #15. The next new entry comes from German band Silbermond, whose #1 “Irgendwas Bleibt” is still in the top 20. The follow-up “Ich bereue nichts” charts at #20, and though a good song (as all their songs actually), its timing is somewhat wrong as it has more a winter feeling. Neverthelless, a top 20 entry is not so bad after all. Confirming that they have a strong fanbase in Germany, the guys from Depeche Mode return to the chart with "Peace" at #25. The second single from the "Sounds of the Universe" comes after the top 3 smash "Wrong". This time the video is proper to be played on the music TV during the day, so I hope that can have a good impact on its performance. Though I will not be surprised to see the song outside the top 40 next week. Unfortunately, I was among of those who had no luck of seeing the band live as they cancelled their gig in Bulgaria but that's another story... Next, I think that Flo Rida will be disappointed from the lacklustre performance of the follow-up of his mega hit "Right Round" (this week #23). Despite that "Sugar" samples a #1 song, it fails to break the top 30 barrier in its entry this week... Still, most disappointed this week will be Jonas Brothers and their teen fans as the latest offering of the band, despite a lead single from a new album and despite being a good song (yes, I like it), enters at the miserable #65... It's a shame also to see Polarkreis 18 "Happy Go Lucky" so down in the chart and I advise all who have still not heard their album to do so, it's rather good!

German Top 100 Singles/Albums Chart
Yan's German chart comments - Issue date June 19 In one of those rare news, Lady Gaga manages to return to the top of the German singles charts (WHY???) after being replaced there by superstar Daniel Schuhmacher for three weeks. I personally don't remember such a thing to have happened recently and having in mind how old "Poker Face" is and that it has already been for 11th weeks at the top, it is quite a surprising thing. It is more typical for a song to return to the top after a week absence there, but after three, it may be considered a real feat. The next big news is the 10-2 movement of Emiliana Torrini's "Jungle Drum", which is enjoying a considerable momentum right now, and is still only on downloads... The prospects before the wonderful "Stadt", the latest from Cassandra Steen, are also quite good as the song is up 4 places to #4 in its second week in the chart. It is now Steen's best performing song, both solo and as part of Glashaus. Unlike last week, when the big new entries came from female stars, this week the guys are back with the three highest new entries belonging to male rock groups. First of all, I'm glad to see that the latest single of Canadian band Billy Talent becomes their most successful song and first top 20 entry ever by coming in at #14. The guys so far has had three top 50 hits in Germany, all coming from their previous album Billy Talent II, with "Red Flag" peaking at #34. The new song is taken from the forthcoming Billy Talent III LP. Next at #22 we find German band Reamonn, who is rather consistent in making top 30 hits in the country. "Moments Like This" is the third single from their self-titled album and if you ask me the best so far from it. Though it's not so strange to see the third single from Die Toten Hosen's last album entering at #38, it is somehow a disappointment after the first two songs taken out from In aller Stille managed to enter the top 10. It's a beautiful song though. The next new entries can be found at #44 and #45, with newcomer Lenka and chart veteran Shaggy, respective. And while Lenka deserves to be much higher in the chart, the lacklustre offering of Shaggy should have remained outside the top 50. And last I think that having in mind the support by VIVA, Berlin band Bosshoss has expected their latest offering "Last Day" to finally be their breakthrough song. Unfortunately it manages to chart at #78 in its first full week of release.

German Top 100 Singles/Albums Chart
Yan's German chart comments - Issue date 12.06 Proving he has a superstar potential, at least for now, Daniel Schuhmacher manages to score a third week at the top of the German singles charts with "Anything But Love". Of course Lady Gaga stays firm at the #2 position, while thanks to the #3-#9 drop of A-ha's rather wonderful "Foot of the Mountain" Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" makes a new peak at #3 and Alexander Rybak even advances a notch to #7, showing that Germans really like him. His album "Fairytales" enters the album chart this week at #16. The biggest new entry of the week comes in at #8. The duet of Cassandra Steen (the new, softer Sabrina Setlur, if you ask me) and Adel Tawil (of Ich+Ich fame) is the follow-up of Steen's debut solo single "Darum leben wir", which was a major hit in the last winter, peaking at #6. For those who don't remember Cassandra was the lead singer of German trio Glashaus, which had one or two big hits in the early 2000s. "Stadt" (or "city" in English) is a fine example of the strength of the German music currently and I really like it... After shamefully omitting Emiliana Torrini's new entry last week at #12, I should now say some words on the Icelandic singer. So far, at least for me, she has been famous for singing the "Gollum's Song" from the soundtrack of LOTR:The Two Towers, one of the best OSTs ever! Despite that "Jungle Drum" was released way back in March in Germany, it failed then to enter the charts. Now, backed by the power of TV, the song sales were fuelled by the fact that it was played at the final of Germany's Next Topmodel and Torrini manages to be a real chart star in the country for the first time ever. And looking down the chart, and having in mind Cassandra Steen's entry at #8, it can be really said that this week is really the week of the women as long as the new entries are concerned. We have Ashley Tisdale, Britney Spears, Jeanette and Miley Cyrus all entering the countdown. So the most successful of the aforementioned is Ashley Tisdale, whose "It’s Alright, It’s OK" becomes her biggest hit to date in Germany, beating both Vanessa Hudgens and Miley Cyrus attempts for chart power. So apart from Zac Efron, whose filming career is booming, it seems that Sharpay is the other winner of the High School Musical project. Unfortunately good things cannot be said for the performance of Britney Spears latest offering "If You Seek Amy". Despite a good song, it sets a new record for her, being the single with the lowest peak position in her career. Perhaps the fact that the song is played on the TV for ages and everyone who cares has downloaded it or has a copy of the album is to be blamed? I don't know... Similarly German pop star Jeanette's newest single was also overplayed on the music channels but despite the support it comes in at the rather low #43. It thus becomes her second least successful single and only the fourth to miss out the top 20. Nevertheless, as Britney, she has had a great chart career so far. On behalf of the male half of the population, the most successful new entry of the week comes from super DJ Paul Van Dyk and his 2009 take on one of his most popular songs "For An Angel". As now the German charts are not the best place for electronic music, the entry of the song at #24 is quite an achievement. The original peaked at #44 back in 1998. Paul Van Dyk has his share of top 20 hits several years ago with "We Are Alive", "Nothing But You", "Time Of Our Lives" and "Wir sind wir". And finally, one curious fact is the new entry of the comeback single of Placebo at #34, as that position is the highest the guys have ever reached in the Germany with "The Bitter End". As I don't think that “For What It's Worth” will advance further, it seems that the #34 is Placebo's lucky number ;)

German Top 100 Singles/Albums Chart
Yan's German Chart Comments - Issue Date 5.06 Perhaps it is not a surprise that the freshest DSDS winner, Daniel, remains at the top of the German singles chart for a second consecutive week, while Lady Gaga sticks to the #2, just refusing to go down. The biggest news comes at #3, where Norwegian band A-Ha enters with its comeback single "Foot of the Mountain". The song not only becomes their second biggest hit in Germany, after debut song "Take On Me" (their only number one) but it may be said that it comes from nowhere. So far it has had no video to promote it and has been popular only in their home country. However, the fact that A-Ha have several top ten hits in Germany, most recently "Summer Moved On", means that they have never ceased being popular there. The single headlines the forthcoming ninth album of the group. After a somewhat failed start of their chart career, the girls from Queensberry, the latest winners of the Popstars TV show (which has given us No Angels and Monrose, among others), manage finally to score their first top 10 hit. Though being a beautiful ballad, "Too Young" benefits also from the fact that it is not available on Queensberry's debut album. Perhaps now we may not have to write off the group so fast... Kudos also to Alexander Rybak, who unlike UK, manages to fall by only four places this week, which seems that the Eurovision hype in Germany is still on. Pay also attention to three good songs on the rise - at #9 (Sportfreunde Stiller), #16 (Laura Pausini & James Blunt) and #20 (Lily Allen - YES!). The third biggest new entry can be seen at #13, where Australian newcomer Daniel Merriweather enters the German charts with his debut solo single "Change". It may be a great song, but seems so old for people like me following the UK charts as well. And "Red" is the better single ;) We may also marvel at the consistency at which U2 make top 30 singles in Germany. "Magnificent", despite a total flop in the UK, somehow manages to come in at #25. Don't expect it to be in the top 50 in the next week or two though, when everyone who cares will have a copy. And finally for the singles chart, the prospects before Kelly Clarkson, whose previous single "My Life Would Suck Without You" was hailed as a return to form, do not seem so rosy as its follow-up "I Do Not Hook Up" enters outside the top 50... There is a bigger action this week in the albums chart, with five new entries in the top 10. Thus Green Day are kicked off from the top position by Sportfreunde Stiller and their MTV Unplugged (great!), while the latest album of Mark Medlock comes in at #3. His three previous albums all charted in the top 3, with "Mr.Lonely", his debut hitting the #1 slot.

German Top 100 Singles/Albums Chart
Yan's German chart comments - Issue date 29.05 As I predicted last week, we needed the power of TV to shake the German singles charts and to finally kick off Lady Gaga from the #1 position. Thus, the latest, actually sixth, winner of the DSDS (the German Pop Idol), Daniel Schuhmacher as expected enters the chart directly at #1. Thus he follows the path of all other male winners of the show, who all have charted at the top with their debut singles. The only exception is Elli, who reached the #3 position, after winning the second edition of DSDS and so the fact that no other woman has won since is not surprising at all. Without neglecting Alexander Klaws, the first winner, I have to say that the most successful so far has been Mark Medlock, whose current summer anthem "Mamacita" sits this week at #3. As long as Daniel is concerned, he is close to the cheesy formula of Alexander, rather than the "rock" idol Thomas from last year. As Alexander had several successful singles, I will refrain myself from any projections to what extent the career of Daniel will develop. And am I the only one who sees a physical resemblance with Daniel Bedingfield? The second highest new entry comes from another winner, as Eurovision sensation Alexander Rybak comes in at #4. After winning the vote of entire Europe, Alexander proves that the Eurovision is not dead after all (and indeed there have been songs this year which are really good) and manages to beat by an inch the #5 peak of Lordi's "Hard Rock Hallelujah" from 2006. I am now too lazy to check who of the Eurovision winners charted higher :P and if someone has this information, please share. Last winner Dima Bilan reached only #52, while Marija Serifovic did not enter the countdown. At least I can say that following Nicole's smash hit "Ein bischen Frieden" in 1982 (number one of course), Alexander is the third Eurovision winner to enter the top 5 after Lordi and Johnny Logan (1987 - #2). Eurovision is also responsible for the 49-20 jump of the German entry from Alex Swings Oscar Sings which at least now manages to enter the top 20 after entering at #27 seven weeks ago. In addition, we can find the Turkish entry in the competition at #70 and the UK one at #75. The next week it will be interesting to observe how all those songs perform and I really hope that "Fairytale" does not collapse. The next new song in the chart is also TV related and despite credited as a re-entry, the appearance of Sportfreunde Stiller's "Ein Kompliment" at #11 is actually because of its new Unplugged version, which makes my day every time I hear it on VIVA. Strongly recommended for all who are into German music. "Ein Kompliment" is the second biggest hit of Sportfreunde Stiller after the #1 football anthem "'54, '74, '90, 2006 (oder 2010) " Bad news for the follow-up of Mando Diao's megahit "Dance with Somebody" (this week at #17). "Gloria", despite a great song, fails to enter the top 30 and although #33 is not so bad position (and is actually their second best performing single), it deserved to be higher. Higher also deserve to be Australian twins The Veronicas but Germans, unlike a lot of other countries, do not seem to like "Untouched" that much, placing it at #48. And although I don't remember it, the girls have a top 30 single with "4ever" in 2006.

German Top 100 Singles/Albums Chart
Yan's German chart comments - issue date 22.05 So for another week Lady Gaga remains untroubled at the summit of the German single charts, but I guess that she will be removed from there either by Alexander or by Daniel in one of the next two weeks. That leaves us to the biggest and only new entry in the top 10 from returning Black Eyed Peas at #4. Fergie and the guys already have six top 10 singles in Germany, two of which ("Where is the Love" and "Shut Up") even climbing to the top spot - a good feat for a band with not so long chart history. Perhaps their latest album will offer more top 10 singles in the near future apart from the somewhat overrated "Boom Boom Pow". We should also not overlook the fact that Eminem still manages to jump in the top 10, after his latest offering "We Made You" debuted last week at #11 and this time advances to #9. Steady climb also for Green Day (27-25-24-14), with a song that really has grown on me over the past weeks. Now the guys are just two steps of beating their all-time peak of #13 in Germany. The second highest new entry of the week belongs to Keri Hilson, whose two previous collaborations with Timbaland managed to enter the top 10 last year. However, although not a flop, her first proper single for now fails by an inch to chart in the top 20. Still, I'm sure that we'll see more from this lady in future. After the somewhat surprising success of Lily Allen's last single "The Fear" (peak #12) in Germany, it's time its follow-up, the supreme "Not Fair", to also enter the chart. Despite that an entry in the top 30 for a second single is not bad at all, I just wish the song has charted higher. The same can also be said to Flipsyde, whose attempt to not be a one-hit wonder (the excellent "Happy Birthday" being a massive hit in 2006), are met with indifference. The song is good though. And I think that the Sandra and Thomas Anders may be classified as the duet of the year... It's not often when we see two 80s legends join forces in the 2000s... :w00t:

"Odd, look at Amazon (although the song is not available ): http://www.amazon.de/Kennst-Stars-Oliver-P...mp;sr=8-2" Yeah, but Mark Medlock who is mentioned in the song did not "existed" back then :D "OMG it's a good thing they don't play Schlager but that was a bit extreme decision" Yes, but Bushido should have accepted it and get over it ... And MTV Germany does not play a lot of the pop songs out there, and I think that is the real reason for their decision. VIVA also does not play schlagers, but played Fuer immer jung...
-

MTV stopped playing "Für immer jung" because they thought it was too "Schlager"-ish and wouldn't fit into their normal program. Bushido then felt offended and forbid Viva and MTV to play any of his videos from now on. Oh, I already wondered while "Für immer jung" dropped out of VIVA, but that happens when some artists start taking themselves too seriously...

-
German Top 100 Singles/Albums Chart
Yan's German chart comments - issue date May 15 Another almost quiet in terms of new entries week in the German singles charts, with Lady Gaga staying at the top for a tenth week. And perhaps she will stay there until the debut single of Daniel Schuhmacher, the recent and latest winner of Germany's Music Idol (DSDS), hits the stores. Apart from the #1, there are no changes in the #2 to #6 positions, which leads us to the highest new entry of the week from Ciara and Justin Timberlake. Ciara has had three other songs entering the top 10 so far, of which both "1,2 Step" and "Oh" peaked at #7 and if "Love Sex Magic" fails to advance further, it seems that the she is destined to be always as high as the number seven position. As long as Justin is concerned, he was last here together with T.I. (this week #14) and it is more than clear Timberlake is in every second song released these days. Surprisingly or not, the return single of Eminem in the charts fails by a notch to go in the top 10 and "We Made You" enters at #11. That of course can hardly be considered a flop and I think that despite all naysayers Eminem has a lot to show in the future, musically speaking. He has ten top 10 singles in Germany, of which "Stan" and "Without Me" reaching the very top. The third highest new entry belongs to Finnish rockers Sunrise Avenue, who after the mega hit "Fairytale Gone Bad" are somewhat struggling to have a new massive single. Still "The Whole Story", the pilot single from their second album "Popgasm", succeeds in being their third top 30 single. Pay also attention to one of the curious pairings of the year at #44, where comes in the duet of Bushido (one of the most famous German rappers) and TV star Oliver Pocher and their song "Kennst du die Stars", which makes fun of celebrities such as Mark Medlock, Sarah Connor and even Lil Wayne. The two have already been in the upper reaches of the countdown, but the fact that this has a lazily-shot video shows that all is just for fun... And don't forget to check out the "Umbrella" cover at #53, it's ridiculous. Finally, the return of one of the best dance acts in both the album and singles should not be neglected. I'm speaking of course of Mr. Andre Tannenberger, or simply ATB. However, it is quite sad that such music does not receive any support these days...

German Top 100 Singles/Albums Chart
Yan's German chart comments - Issue date 08.05.2009 So even German superstar Mark Medlock cannot stop Lady (boring already) Gaga from spending a ninth week at the top of the German charts. With his latest single, the summer-flavoured "Mamacita", Mark proves so far to be the most successful winner of the German version of Music Idol (DSDS). And to repeat myself, he is the Will Young of the German music ;). "Mamacita" for now falls short of the number one, entering at #2, which is not bad at all having in mind he has three number ones, out of only five singles. In the "Mamacita" vocals you can once again hear the voice of his mentor, the one and only Dieter Bohlen of Modern Talking fame. The best new entry of the week for me however comes in at #18, with the follow-up of one of the German hits from this winter "Eisblumen" from the band with the same name. I doubt that "Leben ist schoen" will have the same impact as the previous single, which stayed in the top 10 for months, but it's a wonderful song nevertheless with quite a catchy chorus. And for another week I should mention the slow movement of Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys, whose "Wrong" and "Love etc" can really be considered hits in Germany, unlike UK for example. Speaking of UK, at #23 and #29, we find two big hits there entering now also the German charts. Having in mind the success of Taylor Swift's "Love Story" and Pussycat Dolls ' "Jai Ho!" elsewhere in Europe, it is somewhat surprising to see the songs outside the top 10. Of course the dolls have had their hits in Germany, disregarding the fact that "Jai Ho!" is better than almost all of them, but "Love Story" is Taylor's first single to enter the German Top 100 so far, which does not bode well for the future career of the country star there... Unfortunetely, Alesha Dixon's amazing "The Boy Does Nothing" also charts outside the top 20, which, when looking at the months-old songs there, is a real shame.

German Top 100 Singles/Albums Chart
Yan's German chart comments - Issue date 1.05 So the new chart sees pop sensation Lady Gaga making a second month on the top with “Poker Face”. Perhaps the most interesting things in the top 10 are the slow falling of Depeche Mode’s amazing “Wrong” (this week #7), even after the release of their 12th album, which of course lands at the summit of the albums chart, and the highest new entry from Pink at #9. “Please Don’t Leave Me” is the third single taken from Pink’s “Funhouse” album and as the previous two manages to penetrate the top 10. In 2002 and 2003 Pink also had a string of (then four) top 10 singles starting with “Get The Party Started”. Passing around Pet Shop Boys, who are still in the top 20, let’s go to the number 24, where we can find the next new entry of the week belonging to new comer Linda Teodosiu. The German singer finished third in the last year Deutschland sucht den Superstar, just behind Thomas Godoj and Fady Maalouf. Having in mind that the latter’s career hasn’t started especially strong, I wonder who at the record companies continue to think that releasing singles from losers at such shows is a smart move. At least Linda’s “Love Sux” is not a complete flop for now. A place behind Linda comes in actually a winner from the Estonian equivalent of DSDS – Kerli. “Walking on Air” enters the German charts almost a year after its first appearance. The song already was a massive hit in Estonia, but was also successful in Italy, Latvia and Poland. And last but not least, let’s say some words for one of the most anticipated comebacks of the year from Green Day. “Know Your Enemy”, the pilot single from the guys’ latest album, does not actually set the charts on fire, but at least serves as a good appetizer for what is to come from the album. Perhaps the song which will be Green Day’s first top 10 singles in Germany is already in there. We will see in the next months.
