  1. Yan's German chart comments - Issue date 24.04 So last week we saw a flood of new entries in the top 30 but the latest chart has its highest debut this time at #22. That leaves us to Lady Gaga who stands firm at the #1 position for a seventh week. Not only that but her previous single "Just Dance" jumps 20-11 to prove that Germans wants more and more of their Gaga. "Just Dance" is not the only old single which inexplicably goes up this week as Razorlight's "Wire To Wire", James & Nelly's "Broken Strings" and Polarkreis' "Allein Allein" also jump towards the top instead of just go out of the chart... Perhaps the most important thing in the top 10 is the small decline of Depeche Mode's "Wrong". The guys songs may be extremely popular in Germany but have the tendency to plunge considerably after their debut week, so it is somewhat a surprise that "Wrong" falls only four places. The highest new entry comes from Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat and their duet "Lucky" at #22. Both singers have one major hit in Germany so far with "I'm Yours" and "Bubbly" respectively, which were followed by massive flops. At least "Lucky" does them a favour and perhaps they will be not remembered as one-hit wonders. Next at #32 and #33 we see German rapper Fler and US r&b star Akon entering the chart with their latest, and may I say, not quite memorable singles. Perhaps the formula for making German soft hip-hop songs featuring female vocals is starting to fade now. As for Akon, I think he is much overrated as a solo artist. It would be interesting also to see whether this year's German Eurovision entry by Alex Swings Oscar Sings will be able to recover from this week's #42-#27 fall during the weeks approaching the contest. As long as the albums chart is concerned, the amazing Silbermond manage to return to the top after being replaced their by Andrea Berg. The biggest new entry belongs to Austrian Christina Stuermer at #6. She has a #1 album with "Lebe lauter" in 2006.

  4. Yan's German Chart Comments - Issue Date 17.04 After last week when we became witnesses of only three! new entries in the entire top 100, this week's singles chart is marked by the influx of a total of 18 new songs. Not only that, but I'm extremely glad to say that the four new entries in the top 10 are actually great songs! :yahoo: Nevertheless, Lady Gaga is still untroubled at the peak position despite the highest new entry coming in at #2. Yes, unlike UK, Depeche Mode continue to be enormously popular elsewhere in Europe, and especially in Germany (not to speaking here in Bulgaria, where they have a cult following). Despite having almost none airplay, I guess the video is too offensive for most of the TVs, "Wrong" becomes the second consecutive single of Depeche to enter at #2 in Germany, after "Martyr" in 2006. The guys have two number ones in the country with "People Are People" and "Dream On". Although I expect the song to go out quickly (still Pet Shop Boys have shown that they can linger in the top 20 for longer, so I may be "wrong" ;) ), the high position is a sign that Depeche Mode still have what it needs to make a hit, the music business is not only UK after all... The next new entry can be found at #7 from US rapper T.I. Contrary to all expectations that his collaboration with Rihanna on "Live Your Life" would make him a big star in Germany, the song managed to reach #12 in the country. So, now with the help of Justin Timberlake, T.I. finally has his top 10 single with "Dead And Gone", which is if you ask me the better song... Following the mega success with her previous single "If I Were A Boy" (#3 peak), super diva Beyonce scores another top 10 hit in Germany with the superb "Halo" at #9. Rosenstolz, one of the best German bands around, also continue their string of top 10 hits with "Blaue Flecken" at #10. The song is the third single from Anna and Peter's "Die Suche geht weiter" album and comes after the #1 "Gib mir Sonne" and #8 "Wie weit ist vorbei". Jumping to the #19 position we can find the duet of James Blunt and Italian singer Laura Pausini - "Primavera in Anticipo". After the #2 smashes "You're Beutiful" and "1973", Blunt was absent from the upper reaches of the chart, while Laura, despite extremely popular in Italy and Latin America has not been in the German singles charts since 1994. Further new entries in the top 30 come from US band The All American Rejects and their pilot single "Gives You Hell" at #21 and from German singer Clueso at #25. This year's German entry in the Eurovision contest enters at #29 and belongs to super producer Alex C (U96). Expect the single to climb in the next weeks. Though "Miss Kiss Bang Bang" resembles a little bit Sam Sparrow's "Black And Gold" from last year, I think it is quite suitable for the Eurovision in Moscow in May.

  6. Yan's German chart comments - Issue date 10.04 So all of you who have thought that the German charts are especially slow at the beginning of the year, should look at this week chart, which sees only three new entries in the top 100 and almost the entire top 10 unchanged from the last week. Definitely, the chart can bear the title "the most boring countdown of the year", with Lady Gaga continuing her success at the top spot for a fourth week there. It’s good also to see Pet Shop Boys climbing steadily in the top 20. The first of the three new entries comes in at #27 by Austrian superstar Christina Stuermer, and her latest single “Ist mir egal”. The song is a fine example of her pop-rock style, which has made her popular outside Austria, which these days can only be “proud” of DJ Oetzi. Christina's most successful songs in Germany are “Ich lebe”, “Mama (Ana Ahabak)” and “Fieber”. As for the next new entry, I’m a little bit surprised to see The Killers follow-up of the still massive “Human” (this week #17) entering in the top 30 at #29. Nevertheless “Spaceman” is another good track of the band, and the fact that it is not a complete flop as I expected can only make this chart look a little bit less boring. The other new entry of the week comes from Dutch DJ Sander Van Doorn and his single “Close My Eyes”, which features the vocals of Robbie Williams. A nice electro song, which can serve as an appetizer before the forthcoming new album of the great Mr. Williams. It should be mentioned also that the track is produced by the aforementioned Pet Shop Boys. Unlike the singles chart, this week sees stronger action in the albums countdown. Despite that the highest new entry comes from Samy Deluxe at #3, I think that Sandra’s  latest album at #26 deserves greater attention.

  8. Yan's German chart comments - issue date 03.04 So the unstoppable Lady Gaga spends her fourth week at the top of the German charts and thus makes a total worldwide domination with #1s in USA, UK and Germany. Perhaps next week she will be challenged by Milow whose “Ayo Technology” moves 3-2, beating the #3 peak of 50 Cent’s original. The highest new entry of a total five in the top 20 belongs to rapper Flo Rida, who I’ve never thought would be able to repeat the success of debut single “Low”. Now, to prove me wrong, he not only charts his first ever top 10 single in Germany but he does with a song I adore. “Right Round” samples the Dead or Alive 1984 classic “You Spin Me Round”, which reached a #2 peak in Germany. Time will tell whether Flo Rida will manage to beat that position. The next new entry comes in at #9 from Enrique Iglesias and Sarah Connor. The two are not strangers to the top ten, with Sarah having 5 number one singles for just eight years, while Enrique has four top ten singles, with the best being “Hero” from 2001. “Takin’ Back My Love” originally features the vocals of Ciara, but of course Universal are quite smart to engage a superstar like Sarah to help Enrique make a new hit in Germany. After successfully conquering the charts all over the world, Metro Station’s “Shake It” enters the German Top 100 at #10 this week. So Miley Cyrus may be more famous as a house name than her brother, but his group has a top 10 single in Germany and she still doesn’t – isn’t this irony? And honorable mention should go to Pet Shop Boys, whose “Love etc” I expected to plummet this week, but it stays firm and even climbs two places – a good sign for the song’s future performance. Unusually for the current charts, a new dance hit enters the top 20 at #19 from Big Ali ft. Dollarman and “Hit The Floor”, which samples Snap’s #2 smash “The Power”. And last but not least, let’s pay attention to the surprising (at least for me) entry of Take That’s latest “The Garden” at #20. It is surprising as the song seems to have come from nowhere, with its video aired in Germany a week ago, and as the band’s previous song in the country “Greatest Day” even failed to reach the top 25.

  12. Yan's German chart comments - Issue date March 27 So as Lady GaGa spends another week, her third actually, at the summit of the German singles charts, two things I've predicted last week have come true after Kings of Leon and Lady GaGa's other, never-dying song, enter the top 10. Still, I think there is something wrong with the fact that "Just Dance" reaches a new peak in its 28th week in the chart, but it seems that Germans cannot have enough of GaGa. Another curious fact is that as Peter Fox's latest single "Schwarz zu blau" falls out of the top 10, his former hit "Haus am See" stays firm at the #8 position in its 22nd week. Fox also continues his supremacy in the albums chart. The biggest new entry comes in at #3 by Belgian artist Milow. His cover of 50 Cent's "Ayo Technology" has already managed to top the Belgian and Dutch charts. The debut single of Milow, or Jonathan Vandenbroeck as his parents call him, matches the #3 peak of 50 Cent's 2007 hit. I'm still not getting the appeal of the song though. The other new entry in this week's top 20 belongs to pop legends Pet Shop Boys  at #15. The boys were a major force in the German charts in the 80s with a string of top ten hits, starting from "West End Girls" and ending with "So Hard". They have also four number one hits, which, having in mind the German charts, is quite a feat. Unfortunately last time they were in the top ten (Robbie's "She's Madonna" excluded) was way back in 1993 with the classic "Go West". "Love etc", the pilot single from Pet Shop Boys' tenth album, sees them return on form and finally once again in the top 20. However, I expect the song to collapse in the next week... Fingers crossed it stays in the top 30 longer. The last new entry worth mentioning is at #23, where, to my annoyance, "Day N Nite", the hit of American hip hop artist Kid Cudi, finally breaks into the German charts. :w00t:

  15. Yan's German chart comments - Issue date 20.03 The time of the slow charts has once again returned in Germany, with the highest new entry this week coming at #38. Not only that but songs like Amy MacDonald's "This Is The Life" or Peter Fox's "Haus am See" even climb undisturbed by the fact that they are in the chart for months now. So thus Lady Gaga spends a second week at the top with "Poker Face", while her previous single "Just Dance" registers this week a new peak at #12. The song charted for the first time 30 weeks ago, went out of the countdown and re-entered following the worldwide hype around Stefanie, as Lady GaGa's real name is. There will be no surprised even if it manages to join "Poker Face" in the top 10. Lady GaGa is not the only one to have two singles in the top 30, with Peter Fox (whose singles move jointly together in a strange fashion), Polarkreis 18 and Katy Perry also being among the first thirty places with two singles. Perhaps the only movement worth mentioning this week is that of Kings of Leon, who jump 18-13 in their second week and stand a great chance of entering the top 10. Jumping to the highest new entry, as I already mentioned it comes in at #38, where German rapper Samy Deluxe enters with his latest single "Bis die Sonne rauskommt". Samy's best charting song is "Weck mich auf" from 2001, which was a huge hit during the 9/11 events and if you ask me is one of the best German rap songs ever released. Check it out here: Let's also pay attention to LaFee, whose chart power seems to have faded as her latest single "Scheiss Liebe" fails to make it into the top 40 and thus becomes her least successful single. I think the time has come when she should rework her hit formula in order to remain in the business... Despite having several top 20 singles, LaFee's only top 10 singles is "Heul doch", reaching #3 in 2007. And finally for the single charts, don't overlook legend Sandra's return in the top 100 and Miley's best song so far at #62. As long as the albums chart is concerned, apart from the unstoppable Peter Fox at #1, also worth mentioning is the new entry by Kelly Clarkson at #4, who thus reaches the same peak as her first album in Germany. For me personally, I'm most intrigued by the debut album of Eisblume at #11, which I think deserves a listening.

  20. Yan's German chart comments - Issue date 13.03 Following its last week debut at #2, Lady Gaga has changed places with Silbermond to become the latest number one in Germany with "Poker Face". The strange thing is that "Just Dance", a major hit outside Germany, has never managed to enter the top 10... As a sign of the total female domination of the charts, the highest new entries come from Jeanette Biedermann, Kelly Clarkson and Britney Spears at #6, #7 and #11, respectively. Jeanette stormed the German charts with hits like "Go Back", "How It's Got To Be", "Rock My Life" and many more in the early 2000s before dedicating her career to the TV industry. In fact "Undress to the Beat" not only sees Jeanette back in the charts after a three-year leave but also becomes her 11th top 10 hit for nine years. And she has only six singles charting lower... As it has been spoken all over the world, Kelly Clarkson is finally back on form after her misjudged previous album. Unlike USA and UK though "My Life Would Suck Without You" has not charted at the top of the German charts. Still the single becomes one of her most successful in the country next to "Since U Been Gone" and "Because of You". As long as Britney Spears is concerned, she continues her strings of hits in Germany with "Circus". Still, I think that the record company should have released the single earlier, the song is played in the country for ages! Following the success of Kings of Leon in UK, it was natural for the group to have its first hit in Germany. Unlike UK though, "Sex On Fire" managed to peak at only #43, so now the honour goes to "Use Somebody", the second single from the acclaimed "Only By The Night" album, to enter the top 20. I may be the only one, but I still see some connection between the recent success of The Killers, Razorlight, Snow Patrol and Kings Of Leon in Germany. And to conclude the comments on the singles chart, does anyone know why the amazing "Rain On Your Parade" re-enters the chart, achieving a new peak at #29? The new album chart deserves a special mentioning this week, as we see U2's latest studio album entering at #1 and becoming their eighth consecutive studio album to do so... The first was "The Joshua Tree" back in 1987. At the same time German singer Sasha has another top ten album with his latest LP. Sasha's best performing album (#2) is still "...You" from 2000, while as part of Dick Brave and the Backbeats he reached #1 in 2003.
  21. Yeah, I know, that's why I prefer Viva, it's the only channel on my cable to play German music. The other channel which I watch is MTV Hits as they play a lot of new hits from UK. I don't remember the last time I turned on MTV Europe or VH1 Europe :D
  22. Still I prefer the channels that play the newest music, no matter how thin their playlists are, and on VH1 there is no German music ;) And on VH1 Classic there are no commercials, and the music there is 24 hours a day ;)
  23. The single is released in Germany on March 27 :) And the girls have never been popular in Germany (only "Sound Of The Underground" entered the Top 100) and I think this is their last chance to have a hit in the country. Btw are Girls Aloud popular anywhere outside UK?
  24. I prefer channels that play only new music but still think that VH1 Classic, the central European one, is better than VH1 Europe.
