  1. Until four or five years ago, VIVA playlisted the entire top 60, I don't remember the top 75 to have been ever playlisted. Anyway, I think that that's an overall trend less songs to be playlisted. And yes, MTV is to be blamed for that. Still VIVA remains, at least for me, the best music channel on my cable right now. I don't know if there is a better German music TV.
  2. WOW, I was doing so badly this year, that I've even forgotten to check this week's results early in the morning... And what a surprise to see myself at the number one :o :D
  3. I've decided to launch a new weekly topic concerning the playlist of German music channel Viva. I think it would be interesting for all who like the German charts. For those who don't know, Viva plays the entire top 30 of the German singles charts, without acts like Tim Toupets or DJ Oetzi, plus new, still uncharted, songs. So here it is the latest playlist: Amy Macdonald - “This Is The Life” 33 weeks in the playlist Big Ali Feat. Dollarman - “Hit The Floor” 2 w Brandy - “Right Here (Departed)” 2 w Britney Spears - “Circus” 5 w Cassandra Steen - “Darum Leben Wir” 8 w Christina Stürmer - “Ist Mir Egal” 1 w NEU Die Toten Hosen - “Alles Was War” 2 w Eisblume - “Eisblumen” 11 w Enrique Iglesias Feat. Sarah Connor - “Takin' Back My Love” 1 w NEU Flo Rida - “Right Round” 1 w NEU Guru Josh Project - “Infinity 2008” 27 w Girls Aloud - "The Promise" 1 w NEU James Morrison feat. Nelly Furtado - “Broken Strings” 11 w Jeanette Biedermann - “Undress To The Beat” 4 w Katy Perry - “Hot N Cold” 19 w Katy Perry - “Thinking of You” 6 w Kelly Clarkson - “My Life Would Suck Without You” 5 w Kevin Rudolf feat. Lil Wayne - “Let It Rock” 11 w Kings of Leon - “Use Somebody” 1 w NEU LaFee - “Scheiss Liebe” 3 w Lady Gaga - “Poker Face” 5 w Lady Gaga - “Just Dance” 8 w (after the song re-entered the top 30) Leona Lewis - “Run” 15 w Lily Allen - “The Fear” 10 w Madcon - “Liar” 3 w Mando Diao - “Dance With Somebody” 11 w Metro Station - “Shake It” 2 w Miley Cyrus - “Fly on the Wall” 4 w Milow - “Ayo Technology” 3 w Peter Fox - “Schwarz Zu Blau” 8 w Peter Fox - “Haus am See” 23 w Pink - “Sober” 14 w Polarkreis 18 - “Allein Allein” 22 w Polarkreis 18 - “The Colour Of Snow” 7 w QueensBerry - “Can't Stop Feeling” 6 w Razorlight - “Wire to Wire” 4 w Rihanna - “Rehab” 11 w Sasha - “Please Please Please” 7 w Selig - “Schau Schau” 4 w Silbermond - “Irgendwas Bleibt” 6 w The Killers - “Human” 18 w U2 - “Get on Your Boots” 4 w Vanessa Hudgens & Zac Efron - “Right Here Right Now” 3 w
  4. Yes, sometimes it's better not to rely only on your memory ;)
  5. Yan's German Chart Comments - Issue Date 6.03 Yes, finally, James Morrison, one of the most surprising number ones in Germany, has been kicked off the top after spending five weeks there. The new week sees German band Silbermond and the pilot single of their latest LP attacking quite successfully the number one position. That's by the way the first time the group manages to have a big hit with a first single taken from an album. Surprisingly or not, the biggest songs from Silbermond's previous two albums were the third singles from "Verschwende deine Zeit" and "Laut gedacht". I'm speaking of course for "Symphonie" and "Das Beste" - two minor German classics. Now after the number one "Das Beste", Silbermond are much more famous and it has been expected that a great song like "Irgendwas bleibt" will be massive :cheer:. A place below Silbermond comes in the second single from current chart sensation Lady Gaga. Debut single "Just Dance" was a considerable hit in Germany last year, lingering outside the top 10 for months and now even living a second life (this week - #20) following its late, but quite successful release, in the UK. So, having in mind these facts, no surprises for follow-up "Poker Face" charting so high in the German charts. The top three is rounded up by Razorlight, who continue to rise for a third consecutive week. One more new entry in the top ten this week at #9, where legendary German rock band Die Toten Hosen enters with its latest offering. As the video includes coverage of the band's tour, it comes on time after the winning of the Echo for the Best Live Act of 2008. As the new chart includes data from the 2009 carnival period, a lot of carnival-themed songs soar or re-enter the countdown. Once again the leader is Tim Toupet, who achieves his highest ever peak position at #6, while the best party song of them all - Hoehner's "Viva Colonia" charts once again in the top 40. Speaking of more serious music, at #19 we find the rather miserable new entry of U2's latest single "Get on Your Boots". Though the song is not bad, I think that something is missing this time around. U2 have had more successful hits in Germany so far, albeit never making it to the top three... Still, I expect Depeche Mode's "Wrong" to chart much better. It at least deserves it. Four places under U2 come the latest winners from Pro7's Popstarts, aka the casting show that gave us No Angels, Bro'Sis and Monrose. However, now for the first time ever, winning band Queensberry fails to make it even in the top 20 with its debut album. So far all winners have charted at least once in the top 10. The failure of Queensberry is not only certain to put a quick end on their career but also to question the show itself. And finally, let's just pay attention to two nice ladies, who seem to have been struck by the curse of having an old song refusing to die. As Katy Perry and Amy MacDonald smash hits "Hot n Cold" and "This Is The Life" are staying for months in the top 20, the follow-ups have charted outside it. Now the two girls we face the weird situation at which VIVA will continue to rotate "Hot n Cold" and "This Is The Life" but drop the new ones...
  6. Yes, MTV Europe was great once ...
  7. No surprises there, Silbermond's song has a "number one" written all over it. And Lady Gaga is massive everywhere...

  9. They weren't before Wire to Wire
  10. Perhaps you are right, but I didn't find much info on their success outside Germany, Austria and Switzerland..., and I don't remember seeing them in any other charts :)
  11. Yan's German chart comments - Issue date 27.02 Finally a week with a considerable inflow of new entries. Still, the first two positions continue to be occupied by James Morrison and Mando Diao, with the latter crowning also the album chart. After debuting in the top 20 last week, the new chart sees Peter Fox and Razorlight shooting in the top 5, at #3 and #4, respectively. I continue to be amazed by the success of Razorlight in Germany, which for me is quite unexpected. As for Peter, as I mentioned last time, his winning at the Bundesvision Song Contest has perhaps propelled the sales of the song, which now reaches #3 and thus beats the peak of "Alles Neu" (#4), the first single of Fox's debut album. Down at #5 comes in the highest new entry of the week from Polarkreis 18. "The Colour Of Snow" is the follow-up of super hit "Allein Allein" and as the latter is staying in the top 10 for what is its 20th week  now, is good to know that Germans did not ignore the second single from the guys' latest album. Great song, great video and quite deserved success. Apart from the top 5, the big action this week happens in the positions between 20 and 30, where six new entries shake up the chart. Starting with party DJ Michael Wendler at #21, with "I don't know". Wendler is of course well-known to all carnival goers in Germany with hits like "Sie liebt den DJ" and "Nina". Speaking of carnivals, I think they are the reason for the influx of songs from Hoehner, Brings and many more in the chart this week. The highest placing carnival-themed song however belongs to Tim Toupet, whose "So ein schoener Tag" shoots 30-12. A place beneath Wendler enters the latest offering of German singer Sasha. Despite having Europe-wide hits with "I Believe" and "I Feel Lonely", he has never managed again to break the boundaries of the German speaking countries, which is a shame as his songs are not bad at all. Sasha has been absent from the chart for two years. The same can be said also to Reamonn, who have never succeeded in having big hits outside Germany, despite singing in English. Two international acts are also new in the top 30 this week - with Chris Cornell, and his "Part Of Me" at #24, and The Prodigy, with their comeback single "O" at #28. While Chris Cornell style experiments are quite interesting, I think that I like Prodigy's older staff more, and especially "No Good" .
  12. Peter Fox, Razorlight and Polarkreis 18 in the top 5  That's why I love the German charts ;)

  14. Yan's German chart comments - Issue date 20.02 No changes for a fourth consecutive week in the top two places of the German singles charts, occupied as before by James Morrisson, Nelly Furtado i Mando Diao. The biggest new entry of the week, quite surprisingly and to my greatest delight, comes from Razorlight, and the pilot single of their third album "Slipway Fires". So far their best performing song in Germany is "America", reaching #37 in 2006. So I've never expected the amazing "Wire To Wire" to chart so well in the top 20. Still, having in mind the recent success of The Killers and Snow Patrol, I think that's not so strange after all. The next highest new entry comes in at #15 by Peter Fox."Schwarz zu blau", a tribute to Fox' hometown Berlin, is the follow-up of his already massive hits "Alles neu" (peak #4) and "Haus am See" (peak #9 - achieved this week!!!). The good placing of the third single from his debut solo album "Stadtaffe" (with a platinum status and current #1 in the albums chart) can also to be attributed to the song's participation in the Bundesvision Song Contest. Its actual winning on February 13, 2009 will perhaps boost the sales further. Whether it will be able to surpass "Haus am See" and enter the top 10 is to be seen. Nine places below Peter Fox enters the latest from the one and only DJ Oetzi. This time around he teams up with Kate Hall - Danish singer and former fiancee of German singer Ben. "Traenen" is the first single of the Austrian after the super huge "Ein Stern" which for now fails to make it into the top 10. For those wondering who Matze Knop at #34 is, Google says he is a German TV and radio presenter and comedian... Among the other new entries let's just mention Frauelein Wunder's best single so far at #61 and the mega flop of Vanessa Hudgens "Sneakernight" at #98 (yes, it's only on downloads for now but I don't expect her to climb much higher). Definitely Vanessa is no Ashley as long as the German charts are concerned. The biggest new entries in the album charts come from BeFour's fourth album - "Friends 4 Ever", which manages to beat the #10 peaks of the group's two previous albums but is still far from the #1 success of the #1 debut "All 4 One". The guys and girls have released the four albums in less than 2 years! The other new entry in the top 20 comes from Lily Allen's second album at #17. Strangely it may seem, but her debut "Alright.Still" has never charted in Germany...
  15. Physical Singles out 16th February #6 Beyonce – Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) #12 Britney Spears – Circus #68 The Days – No Ties #22 Empire Of The Sun – Walking On A Dream (7”) [Limited] #25 Gary Go – Wonderful #53 The King Blues - Save The World, Get The Girl #13 Miley Cyrus - Fly On The Wall #5 The Prodigy – Omen #70 Rudenko - Everybody #2 U2 – Get On Your Boots (Downloads) #50 Coldplay - Viva La Vida #42 Take That – Up All Night #8 Taylor Swift – Love Story #28 T.I ft Justin Timberlake - Dead And Gone Bonus #1: Will Lily Allen - The Fear still be the UK #1? YES Bonus #2: Will Kid Cudi Vs. Crookers - Day 'N' Nite still be in the Top 10? No Bonus #3: Will Kings of Leon - Sex On Fire be in the Top 20? No
  16. Yan's German chart comments - Issue date 13.02 So once again quite a slow new German top 10, with the only exception Eisblume and the incredible "Eisblumen" reaching a new peak at #3. Still, unlike last week, we have a new entry among the first ten places coming from Cassandra Steen at #7. Steen is the lead singer of German trio Glashaus, not to be confused with the Scottish guys from Glasvegas (new in the album chart this week) ;), who rose to fame with singles like "Wenn Das Liebe Ist" (peak #5) and "Haltet Die Welt An" (peak #11). "Darum leben wir" is the first entirely solo single of Steen, coming from the album of the same name. Look out for the girl, I think she has a lot of potential. Going down in the top 30, let's pay attention to the 82-29 jump of the latest offering of German rapper Sido. The sales were boosted by the physical release of the catchy single, which is one of the best songs of Sido if you ask me. Eight places below Sido comes in the newest single of Kanye West. "Heartless" is the follow-up to "Love Lockdown", Kanye's only top 10 hit so far (without taking into account his collaboration with Estelle). Following the worldwide triumph of vampire flick "Twilight", including $16 million in Germany so far, the title song from the movie's soundtrack enters the German chart at #47, becoming the most successful single of US band Paramore. And finally, having watched The Rasmus live last week, I may only say it's a shame that the latest single of the Finnish band has failed to enter the top 50.
  17. #3 Alesha Dixon – Breathe Slow #32 The Killers – Spaceman (7”) #29 Morrissey – I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris #31 My Chemical Romance – Desolation Row (12”) [Limited] (Downloads) #13 Britney Spears – Circus #4 Eminem ft Dr. Dre & 50 Cent - Crack A Bottle #51 Katy Perry - Thinking Of You #23 Lady GaGa – Poker Face #47 Miley Cyrus - Fly On The Wall #35 N-Dubz - Strong Again #14 Pussycat Dolls & Missy Elliot - Whatcha Think About That #9 Shontelle - T-Shirt #55 Take That - Up All Night #40 T.I. ft. Justin Timberlake - Dead And Gone Bonus #1: Will Lily Allen - The Fear still be the UK #1? YES Bonus #2: Will Beyonce - Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) still be in the Top 10? Yes Bonus #3: Will Alexandra Burke - Hallelujah still be in the Top 40? Yes
  18. Yan's German Chart Comments - Issue Date 6.02 So after two weeks of several new entries in the top 10, the German singles chart has once again entered into stagnation. The new week sees not only four  new entries in the entire top 100, but also six songs, including the numbers 1 to 4, keeping their previous positions in the top 10. That leaves us to the biggest new hit of the week at #17. After storming the UK charts at #1, Lily Allen's comeback single not only entered the German top 20 but made her star for the first time in the country. The singles from Allen's first album may have been popular in her native country, but in Germany only "Smile" managed to reach the miserable #67. Of course, I'm sure that Lily Allen is now massively covered by German media and this time around even VIVA supports her. A place below Lily Allen we find the first single from the "Hands on Scooter" project, which involves the remaking of famous songs of Scooter by currently hot German acts. "Beweg dein Arsch" samples "Move Your Ass", Scooter's second single ever dating from 1995, with a peak position #3. 2009 marks the 15th anniversary of the German band, whose consistency in making hits is may I say unbeatable. The third new entry of the week comes from Oasis, who (and that's the reason I love the German charts :P ) have had only one real hit in Germany. You know what it is. The top of the album chart this week is identical to the UK one, with Bruce Springsteen and Franz Ferdinand latest offerings entering at #1 and #2, respectively. This is the fourth number of Bruce, after "Born in the U.S.A. " in 84, "The Rising " in 2002 and "Devils & Dust" in 2005. As long as the amazing Franz Ferdinand are concerned, "Tonight" reaches the same position as their previous album "You Could Have It So Much Better".
  19. #22 Airborne Toxic Event – Sometime Around Midnight #25 All American Rejects - Gives You Hell #48 Coldplay – Life In Technicolor II (7”) #7 Daniel Merriweather – Change #38 Fleet Foxes – Mykonos (7”) #73 Kardinal Offishall ft Keri Hilson - Numba 1 (Tide Is High) (Downloads) #5 Alesha Dixon – Breathe Slow #11 Britney Spears – Circus #15 Jordin Sparks - One Step At A Time #39 Killers – Spaceman #42 Kyla - Do You Mind? #29 Lady GaGa – Poker Face #31 Pussycat Dolls & Missy Elliot - Whatcha Think About That #17 Shontelle - T-Shirt Bonus #1: Will Lily Allen - The Fear still be the UK #1? YES Bonus #2: Will Beyonce – Single Ladies still be in the Top 10? YES Bonus #3: Will T.I. ft Rihanna – Live Your Life still be in the Top 40? YES
  20. Yan's German chart comments - issue date 30.01 Following eight weeks at the top, Katy Perry has finally been kicked off from the #1 spot of the German singles chart. The feat, somewhat surprisingly, belongs to "Broken Strings", James Morrison's duet with Nelly Furtado. The song is already quite popular throughout Europe but Germany is the first country it reaches number one. Provided that it goes straight at the top and that the man has never been in the top 30 before, the success of the single is indeed quite amazing. On the other hand, Germans love Nelly Furtado, so perhaps she is the reason for the excellent performance... Whether they will manage to hold the #1 for one more week is, however, quite questionable in view of the #3 - #2 advance of Mando Diao in their second week in the chart. This week top 10 sees two other new entries of two quite different German singles. Thus at #5 arrives the debut single of pop-rock group Eisblume. "Eisblumen", definitely one of the best songs in German at the moment  , is actually a cover of a song of rock band Subway to Sally. One of the members of Subway to Sally is also behind Eisblume. And I guess the fact that Eisblume were a supporting act at several of Ich + Ich's 2008 concerts also helped for the entry in the top 5. The other new entry in the top 10 comes from party band Die Zipfelbuben and the official hymn of the latest edition of the German version of "I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!". The song is based on "In the Navy", originally a hit of Village People (#3 in 1979). Though I don't remember any of Die Zipfelbuben's other singles, I have to confess that the new song can be a real guilty pleasure... -_- And from one guilty pleasure to another at #21 where charts the latest offering of pop band Befour. Though I have liked them over the past few years, this time they've decided to lay hands on a favourite classic of mine, which is hard to swallow. 2Unlimited original reached #2 in 1993. Down at #24 we find another new entry of a German act in the face of Max Mutzke. Max's chart career started after winning a casting contest of TV host Stefan Raab and actually his first single "Can't Wait Until Tonight" was a smash, peaking at #1 in 2004. Back then he was credited only as Max, and maybe that's why Ben has not included the song in the singer's previous chart performance :P . And just to mention the good placing of Snow Patrol's latest single, which even beats the peak of the first single of the guys' newest album, and of Franz Ferdinand, who make their best charting single in Germany with "Ulysses". I've had the pleasure to watch twice Franz Ferdinand live over the last 18 months, and they are really, really great band!
  21. Physical Singles out 26th January #29 The Fray - You Found Me +75 Ida Maria – Oh My God #12 Jay Sean – Tonight #1 Lily Allen – The Fear (Downloads) #11 Alesha Dixon – Breathe Slow #35 The All-American Rejects - Gives You Hell #18 Britney Spears – Circus #22 Jordin Sparks - One Step At A Time #25 Lady GaGa – Poker Face #53 The Pussycat Dolls & Missy Elliott - Whatcha Think About That #37 Shontelle - T-Shirt (Others) #27 Franz Ferdinand - Ulysses #20 Jason Mraz - I'm Yours #41 White Lies - To Lose My Life Bonus #1: Will James Morrison & Nelly Furtado - Broken Strings still be in the UK Top 5? YES Bonus #2: Will Girls Aloud - The Loving Kind still be in the Top 20? YES Bonus #3: Will Pink - So What still be in the Top 40? NO
  22. Yan's German chart comments - Issue date Jan 23.01 Finally some fresh air in the German singles charts with three new entries in the top 10. However, they for now cannot disturb Katy Perry and Polarkreis 18, who occupy the first and second positions for an eight consecutive week. As their new singles are already gaining in airplay, it would be interesting how the neverending success of "Hot'n Cold" and "Allein, Allein" has affected the chances of "Thinking of You" and "The Colour of Snow" for a good chart performance. It has taken five albums for Swedish band Mando Diao to finally have a hit on its account. Although it's a great song, I cannot hide my real surprise from its placing at #3 this week. The guys have never been in the top 50 so far. Kudos should also go to Rihanna, who is just unstoppable. She may even release its entire "Good Girl Gone Bad" album as singles and yet no one would be tired of her. What is more interesting is that "Rehab" is not only her seventh single from the special edition of the album but also succeeds in being the third biggest from it in terms of peak position. Perhaps we can blame Justin for that... The third biggest new entry of the week belongs to US singer Kevin Rudolf and its debut single "Let It Rock". After hitting #5 in both UK and USA, the song is now invading continental Europe. It is also the biggest ever position for Lil Wayne, one of the most annoying and overhyped rappers at the moment if you ask me... Honourable mention also for the fact that "Run" by Leona Lewis is advancing and now manages to at least reach the peak position of Leona's previous single "Forgive Me". Further in the top 30, we find the latest offering of Farin Urlab Racing Team, the solo project of the Die Aerzte member. "Niemals" is the second single from the group's "Die Wahrheit übers Lügen" album. A minor change at the top of the Albums chart, where opera project Adoro manages to remove Herbert Groenemeyer from the number one. The album of the "German Il Divo" contains opera versions of some well-known German singles such as Rosenstolz' "Liebe ist Alles", Nena's "Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann" and Xavier Naidoo's "Dieser Weg".
