  1. Yan's German chart comments - Issue date Nov 7 No changes this week at the top of the German chart, with all 1 to 4 positions remaining the same as seven days ago. This of course means that Polarkreis 18 and "Allein Allein" stays for a second time as a number one single. Two new German entries in the top 10 this week on behalf of Die Toten Hosen and DJ Oetzi. It has been two years since one of the most famous German bands Die Toten Hosen has been in the charts with the amazing unplugged version of “The Guns of Brixton”. For the first time the Dusseldorf band entered the charts back in 1985. They have had only one #1 single so far, but what a single it was. “Zehn kleine Jaegermeister”, with its interesting lyrics and great video, has easily become one of my favourite German songs. Check it out on YouTube :w00t: . Among their other more famous songs are “Sascha” and “Pushed Again”. “Strom” marks the release of Die Toten Hosen’s new album “In aller Stiller” and judging by the single's chart performance, it seems that the guys are back on form. For all interested in German charts over the last years, DJ Oetzi is quite a familiar name. Who can forget his “Ein Stern”, which just refused to go away for months and became an instant schlager classic. Now the time has come for the Austrian to return in the countdown with a song written buy music mogul Dieter Bohlen, taken from a new album called “Hotel Engel”. Listening to such songs, I can't stop myself from going to the store for more beers… :hic: Just to pay a little attention to the physical release of the new Bond song “Another Way To Die”, which boosts its sales to move the single into the top 20. Both Alicia Keys and (surprisingly) Jack White are no strangers to the top of the German charts. As long as the movie is concerned, unfortunately it is quite good but not great… At least Alicia and Jack have managed to beat the peak of Chris Cornell and “You Know My Name”, the song from the last Bond movie “Casino Royale”, which reached #15. And two other interesting new entries: #20 Lexington Bridge – “Dance with Me” - Lexington Bridge is one of those boy bands who are desperately struggling to make a hit but the lower end of the top 20 is the most they can get. Yes the look is there, the dances are there, but still I think that something is missing in their image… :P #29 The Killers – “Human” – The most surprising placement of the week since The Killers have never been quite popular in Germany. Their highest position so far has been “When You Were Young”, which reached #44 in 2006. Having in mind that “Human” is still only a download, perhaps we may expect great things from the song...

  4. Yan's German chart comments - Issue date Oct 31 So as I suggested last time around, German band Polarkreis 18 was directly heading to the number one position in the country's singles chart and the guys have just proved me right. Pink has now to give up the top position after only three weeks spent there. "Allein Allein", which jumped 8-4-1, is the first single of the Dresden band to enter the countdown. The catchy synthie-pop track is worth a listen to, especially if you like German music. Speaking of German music, the two biggest new entries of the week come from Giovanni and "Wundervoll", and Peter Fox, with "Haus am See" at #9 and #10, respectively. Giovanni first became famous as a member of German superband Bro'sis from the beginning of the 2000s. The group, which was selected after a Popstar casting, had enormous success with hits like "I Believe", "Do You" and "Oh No/Never Stop" before splitting in 2004. After being a TV star for some years, Giovanni decided to return to the music business with "Wundervoll", a German-Italian song. The track is actually not his first solo project, but his 2006 album "Coming Up" failed to make it to the charts. As long as Peter Fox is concerned, "Haus am See" is the second single from the first solo album "Stadtaffe" of the Seed frontman. The song is released only a few weeks after "Alles neu", the first offer from the CD (still being in the top 20), which reached #4. Going down the chart we will find the latest single of boyband US5. Despite that the song features in the soundtrack of the monster cinema hit High School Musical 3 (maybe only in the German version), it is the first song of US5 to actually miss the top 10. And as their chart history is similar to those of McFly in the UK, unless HSM3 boosts its sales, expect "The Boys Are Back" to quickly disappear. And finally great to see one of my favourite songs of the year finally going in the German charts, as "Tattoo" of Jordin Sparks makes its appearance in the top 20. The quite boring "No Air" reached #10 some months ago.
  5. The German chart can be so predictable sometimes ;)

  7. Yan's German chart comments - Issue date Oct 24 No considerable changes in the top places of the German singles charts this week, with Pink continuing her Europe-wide domination with "So What", which turned out to be her best single so far. Just before the release of the "Funhouse" album, the song makes its third week at the top. She is once again challenged by Amy MacDonald, who climbs 3-2. Still I think that "This Is The Life" would be one of those songs, staying in the top three for ages, but never managing to conquer the number one spot. Interesting things happen at the number 4 position, where German band Polarkreis goes up from #8. As this is the second week of the track in the top 100, I guess we'll see more action towards the top from the guys. Just to prove that they still can do it, German band Reamonn scores the highest new entry of the week. Surprisingly "Through the Eyes of a Child" turns to be only their second single in the top 10 after the 2000 smash "Supergirl", which peaked at #4, becoming one of the hits of that year. During their consistent career they've actually never reached the first ten places again, with only "Tonight" coming close with its #11 in 2006. #23 Deichkind - "Arbeit nervt" is the title track from the latest album of Humburg hip hop group Deichkind, whose biggest hit is the great "Bon Voyage" (peak #11) from 2000. Their last single "Remmidemmi (Yippie Yippie Yeah)" was released in 2006 but still regularly visits the bottom end of the Top 100. #26 Anastacia - "I can feel you". As the latest offer from Anastacia is quite uninspired compared to her previous singles, no surprises that she is having problems reaching the top 20. Anastacia has such classics on her account like "I'm outta Love" and "Pay my dues", and of course her #1 duet with Eros Ramazzotti. #30 Boyzone - "Love you anyway" - Boyzone may have been quite popular in UK, but looking at their German chart history one may be surprised that they have only three top 20 hits in the country, with "No matter what" being the biggest of them. At least compared to NKTB their comeback is not a complete flop.
  8. Excellent commenting Ben Good to see you like Rosenstolz too :) And it seems we've been in Vienna at the same time ;)

  10. Sorry guys, but no comments this week as I've just come from a trip to Vienna and do not have much time....
  11. Yan's German chart comments - Issue date: Oct 10 Just to prove that my theory that women are taking control of the charts this year, mighty Pink debuts directly at the summit of the German singles Top 100. Quite deservingly, the excellent song manages to become one of her most (or maybe THE most?) successful singles of the singer. After Katy Perry, which was number one in all major markets -- UK, USA and Germany, it is now time for Pink to have this feat on her account. "So What" becomes also the first ever solo number one hit of Pink, with only "Get The Party Started" and "Dear Mr President" coming close to the top, but never reaching it. Of course "Lady Marmalade" was number one, but that doesn't count... The arrival of Pink also means that Katy Perry should abandon the #1, after staying there for five consecutive weeks. The second highest new entry for the week comes in at #9. "Ching Ching", the latest offering of German rapper Bushido, is the debut single of his latest album "Heavy Metal Payback". His only other top 10 hit is "Alles verloren", which peaked at #4 last year. Though I'm not a big fan of Bushido, "Ching Ching" is definitely among his better songs. Two placed below Bushido, we find the latest dance smash from Scooter. "Jump the Rock" just misses the top 10, a zone which is usually occupied by them. I've written before which are the biggest singles of Scooter, as far as Status Quo are concerned first they entered the German chart in 1968 with "Pictures of Matchstick Men" and last time they were in it was in 2005 with the flop "The Party Ain't Over Yet". Their only number one hit is "In the Army Now" back in 1986. Status Quo were last in the German top 20 in 1990. Down at #15 comes in the latest single of Linkin Park. As I think that "Leave Out All The Rest" is perhaps the best single from "Minutes To Midnight", it's great to see it in the top 20. In addition it is a considerable improvement compared to previous single "Given Up", which burned outside the top 50. "What I've Done" is so far their highest charting "solo" single.

  13. Yan's German chart comments - Issue date 03.10 Still no changes at the top of the German charts with Katy Perry making a fifth non-consecutive week as a number one single. As "I Kissed A Girl" has already become one of the hits of 2008, the next question is whether the single's follow-up will also be successful or Katy will turn into one-hit wonder. Her reign at the summit is however challenged by the steady climb of Amy MacDonald, whose "This Is The Life" albeit being more or less a flop in the singer's native UK, goes up to #2, turning into a smash in major parts of continental Europe. Three places down we find Guru Josh Project, which in its 14th week, manages to advance even further confirming its status as one of the club anthems of 2008. As the song is already gaining in rotation in UK, it will be curious whether it will manage to become a hit there as well. Further down at #12 is the somewhat surprising climb of Duffy's "Warwick Avenue". Is she going to have a second top ten single soon? The honour for the highest charting new entry goes to teen pop star and German actor Jimi Blue, whose latest single "Key To The City" comes in at #13. Jimi already has three top 30 singles on his account, with his debut "I'm Lovin..." peaking at #5 last year. Having in mind that his latest offering is not included in any album, it seems that the hype this time around is not so strong... The Schnuffel bunny (cute or annoying depending on your point of view) has already signed its name in the 2008 chart archives with the Kuschel song. Its third single is not a new song but the inclusion of schlager star Michael Wendler as a guest vocalist attributes to the entry of "Haeschenparty" in the top 20. This is Wendler's first ever top 20 single. The next new entry worth mentioning is at #21, where lovely Maria Mena charts with "All This Time". After the success of debut single "Just Hold Me", which reached #14 but stayed in the chart for months, she has struggled to even make the top 60 with her next two singles. So the return in the top 30 is perhaps a return to form and the song, marking the release of Maria's new album, is actually quite good.

  15. Yan's Very Late German Chart Comments - Issue Date Sep 26, 2008 Not a lot of changes in the top reaches of the German chart this week. Actually the real action is in the albums chart where Metallica continue their worldwide domination with the latest bestseller "Death Magnetic". Back to the singles chart we find Katy staying comfortably and undisturbed at the #1 for a fourth non-consecutive time. Kudos goes to Amy MacDonald for reaching a new peak with the great "This is the Life" and to Peter Fox with his excellent "Alles Neu". The highest new entry belongs to Finnish band The Rasmus at #14. "Living In A World Without You", which I think shows a slightly new sound for the guys, is the pilot single of their seventh studio album. The Rasmus' biggest success in Germany is "In The Shadows", which reached the top spot in 2003. Last time they were in the top 20 was in 2005. Three places below the Finnish rockers comes in teen pop sensation Miley Cyrus. The star of Disney's hit show Hannah Montana is sooo hot right now that I am the last person to inform you about her. As Hannah Montana, she entered the German charts with "Best Of Both Worlds" and reached the #66 a few months ago. "7 Things" is her first proper single to be released in Germany and the top 20 entry shows a lot of potential for Miley's future singing career. Some weeks I spoke of Crazy Loop a.k.a. Dan Balan, a former member of one-hit wonder group O-Zone, whose solo single "Crazy Loop" managed to reach #18. Now, it is time for his colleague Arsenium to come out with a new solo single. "Rumadai" is a catchy and typically summer title and therefore its failure to enter the top 30 for now may be attributed to bad timing. In 2005 "Love Me, Love Me", Arsenium's first ever solo single peaked at #33. And finally let's say some words for the somewhat failed attempt of New Kids on The Block to return on the music scene. And don't get me wrong, I like "Summertime" but its position outside the top 50 means that the boys (or men?) are long forgotten and Take That they are not! Only time will tell whether the return of Boyzone will be more fruitful.

Shame Pink is no longer number one, it's an amazing song! And nice to see the great new single of Katy in the top ten!

  19. Yan's Late German Chart Comments - Issue Date Sept 19 The return of the kissing-girl lady After giving up the top spot last week, this week mighty Katy Perry continues her worlwide chart domination by returning as a queen of the German singles charts for a third time. This of course means that Rosenstolz has to fall to the runner-up slot after only a week at the number one position. Last time I forgot to mention that the sales of "Gib mir Sonne" were also boosted by the song's inclusion in the soundtrack of a new hit TV series with once pop star Jeanette Biedermann. Actually Rosenstolz is the second German act in the last few months who managed to score its first-ever chart topping hit and to be removed by Katy Perry after only a week at the peak. The other one is of course Soehne Mannheims. A place below Rosenstolz we find Gabriela Cilmi and her smash "Sweet About Me" refusing to go away and continuing the women domination in the top 4 is Amy MacDonald and her great "This Is The Life" making quite deserving new peak. To round up the top 10 we should pay attention to Guru Josh's 2008 take on his 1990 hit "Infinity", whose sales are this week triggered by the final physical release of the song. That is enough to place it in the top 10 after a long but steady climb. The week's highest new entry belongs to Peter Heppner at #16. Heppner is no stranger to the German charts with several German classics on his account. However, all of them are in collaboration either via his group Wolfsheim or with acts like Schiller and Joachim Witt. His biggest hit is "Die Flut", a duet with the aforementioned Witt, which reached number 2 in 1998 becoming one of the best sellers that year. Heppner also has several top 20 hits as a vocal for Schiller and Paul Van Dyk. As long as Wolfsheim is concerned, the group most successful single is "Kein Zurueck" peaking at #4 in 2003. "Alleinesein" marks the launch of Heppner's first ever solo album, for which I'm waiting eagerly to be released. Four places below Heppner comes in the fourth single of Ich + Ich's latest album "Vom selben Stern". The LP is already responsible for the smashes "Vom selben Stern", "Stark" and "So soll es bleiben", which all stayed in the top ten for ages. "Nichts bringt mich runter" fails to break the top 10 but having in mind the success of the already too old album and of the three previous singles, the top 20 entry is no mean feat either. The next new entry worth mentioning comes in at #26, where German rock band Oomph! makes its first appearance in the chart after the spring flop "Wach auf". The biggest hit of the boys is "Augen Auf" which reached the number one spot in 2004. "Labyrinth" is the second single from the tenth studio album of Oomph! and at least does better than the already mentioned "Wach Auf".

  22. Yan's German chart comments - Issue date Sept 12 Rosenstolz Finally Made It :yahoo: Being one of the best German acts over the last years, and among my top favourites, it is of no surprise that to my greatest delight Rosenstolz finally score their first number one single with the wonderful "Gib mir Sonne". Established in 1991, the duo came close to the peak position with "Ich bin ich", the first single from their previous album which reached the runner-up spot. The chart history of Anna and Peter includes such diverse German classics  as "Amo Vitam", "Es könnt' ein Anfang sein", "Liebe ist alles" and "Willkommen", which I strongly recommend. The arrival of Rosenstolz at the top also means that Katy Perry has to retreat after being for two weeks queen of the countdown. The top three is rounded up by Soehne Mannheims, the last German speaking band to be at the top prior to Rosenstolz. The second highest new entry comes from Pussycat Dolls at #9. As this is the first single from the gals' second album and having in mind the success of hits such as "Don't Cha" (#1 in 2005) and the hype around the release of the new record, the #9 can be considered as a disappointment. Of course the dolls' chances to advance further are not slim but I think that something is missing this time around. Five places below Pussycat Dolls, we find the third highest new entry from Thomas Godoj. "Helden gesucht" is the follow-up of his chart topping debut "Love Is You". However it is quite rare a Music Idol (DSDS) winner to sing in German and as Alexander Klaws, whose "Welt" burned outside the top 60, has already shown the risks with releasing "Helden gesucht" were too high. Nevertheless the top 20 entry is still a good position but I guess Thomas would struggle to make more top 10, or even top 30, hits. Down at the #20 comes in the latest offer from Chris Brown. "Forever" follows "With You", which despite being a worldwide hit, never managed to enter the top 30 in Germany and peaked at #33. It is also worth mentioning the entering of two U.S. hits at #21 and #31, where Kardinal Offishal and Shwayze make their debuts in the German charts. As sometimes it is good to have popular in the States singles in the German top 100, look at Katy Perry, sometimes this can be a little boring... :P And finally congratulations to The Script, whose #35 position is not exactly the top three success from UK, but it is always good to see good UK bands in the German top 50.

  25. Yan's German Chart Comments - Issue Date Sept 5 The Attack of The Connors With the summer season coming to its close, no considerable changes in the German charts this week, with mighty Katy Perry sitting comfortably on the top spot for a second time. Katy of course has been number one in the USA and is still queen of the UK charts. Last time (if I'm not wrong) we have a song hitting the number one spot on the three markets is when Leona Lewis stormed the world with "Bleeding Love" some six months ago. Perhaps the only movement worth mentioning in the top 10 is the climb of Gabriela Cilmi's (quite boring already) "Sweet About Me" back in the top three. This is her seventh week in the chart. As it happened in the UK though I think she would struggle to make another hit in Germany, but maybe it's too early to make such conclusions. The highest new entry comes in at #16 with Lulu Lewe. Lulu who? you may ask but look first at the #13 position which sexy Sarah Connor occupies this week. Little Lulu Lewe (LLL - just kidding  ) is Sarah's little sister. Yeah, following the steps of her more famous sibling, Lulu makes her first chart apperance with "Crush on You". Of course Lulu has been destined to be a star for quite some time with German media paying too much attention to her and to her friendship with Lafee. She was also the little girl in the video for Sarah's "From Sarah With Love" smash single, which I love  ! And if the family name sounds strange to you, let me tell you that is the birth name of the sisters. And don't forget that Sarah's own husband Terenzi is down at #43. It's a family countdown this week... As a whole Lulu has seven brothers and sisters. Jackson family, anyone? :w00t: Some 12 places below Lulu Lewe (I adore that name!) we find the second new entry belonging to Rhythms Del Mundo who have given more Cuban flavour to the popular hit of German band 2Raumwohnung "36 Grad". Last year "36 Grad" peaked at only #22 but remained in the top 50 for months.
