  3. Yan's German Chart Comments - Issue Date 29.08 She's kissing girls in Germany too! "Don't underestimate the chances of Katy Perry to take Soehne Mannheims off the German top spot." That's what I wrote last week and perhaps I've never been so right. After being a smash hit almost everywhere, the girl who likes kissing other girls, manages to score a #1 hit in Germany. A feat that surprises absolutely no one. Perhaps more suprising is this week's return of Paul Potts in the top three, achieving a new peak for both "Nessun Dorma" and for the highest ever charting download-only single. I guess the time for the first ever #1 download-only single is soon to come. As regards Paul is concerned, he has already done it as his "One Chance" LP is still standing comfortably at the top spot in the album chart. This week's highest new entry comes in at #9 from Peter Fox and his great "Alles neu". The moment the song hit the TV stations, it was clear that it would be a massive hit all over Germany and the top 10 entry doesn't hurt its chances for a strong performance. For all unfamiliar with the German hip-hop and reggae scene, Peter is the frontman of the quite popular band Seeed, whose biggest hits are "Aufstehn!", together with Cee-Lo of Gnarls Barkley fame, and "Ding", both reaching #5. Some seven places below, we find the second new entry of the week, this time by girl band Fraeulein Wunder. Despite being together from 2006, the girls have been just recently discovered by the music producers and thus land their firs ever chart single. I don't know if they are seen as the female Tokio Hotel but the German music channel VIVA has been championing the girls too much for my own taste... :w00t: And the other two new entries worth mentioning are: #23 Lady GaGa - After registering a worldwide success (although with mixed results), it is now time for Lady GaGa to make Germans dance to her single. It's still summer after all... #28 Usher - Despite the #5 peak of his last single "Love in This Club", it is no surprising to see Usher's follow-up failing to reach the top 20. I even may say that he should be happy with the 28 place... Of course Usher's biggest hit continues to be "Yeah!".

  6. Yan's German Chart Comments - Issue Date August 22 The Boys of Mannheim End Kid Rock's Reign After staying for whole two months at the top of the German singles chart, the time for Kid Rock to surrender has finally come. Despite that Kate Perry, whose worldwide smash "I kissed a Girl" debuted last week, seemed the most obvious candidate for the #1, that honour goes to Soehne Mannheims, one of the best German groups around. "The sons of Mannheim" is a project around local megastar Xavier Naidoo and has already scored massive hits in the form of "Geh' davon aus" and "Wenn ein Lied", both peaking at #2 and staying in the top 10 for ages. The new song is taken from the forthcoming MTV Unplugged for the boys, who this time are also joined by the vocalist of the popular in the 1990s German band H-Blocks. Nevertheless we should not underestimate the chances of Kate to take the sons down in the next week . And let once again pay attention to the steady climb of Amy MacDonald, as it is always tremendous joy to see a great song, which no one expects to chart high, prove everyone wrong :yahoo: . As I didn't manage to write any comments last week, Sarah Connor, the prima of the German pop mucic, should not be overlooked this time. "Under My Skin" joins her collection of top 5 singles, which also include "Let’s Get Back to Bed Boy", "From Sarah with Love" and many more. The song may be nice, but she has yet to convince me of her ability to release anything better than her wonderful debut  album... It is also great to see that Duffy's second single manages to advance two spots in its second week and is still in the top 20. One-hit wonder she is not! #23 Schiller mit Lang Lang - "Time for Dreams" - For all the lucky ones who have listened to Schiller's latest album (I strongly recommend it!), it is no surprise that the famous DJ scores a top 30 single. However, "Time for Dreams" is not part of the said album but has become famous after being used by ZDF when broadcasting the Olympics. Of course Schiller is no stranger to the chart, with club classics such as "Das Glockenspiel", "Ruhe" and "Dream of You". #26 Verve - "Love is Noise" - Believe it or not, the comeback single of the British band becomes its best charting single in Germany! Yes, all-time classics like "The Drugs Don't Work" and "Bittersweet Symphony" peaked at only #87 and #37, respectively... #27 Terenzi - "Billie Jean" - Speaking of Sarah Connor, we have also to welcome her hubbie in the chart, as Marc Terenzi's take on Michael Jackson's classics comes in at #27. Marc's biggest solo hit has been "Love to be Loved by You", reaching the top 3 in 2005. And as some of you may remember, he was part of the boy band Natural, which have several minor hits in Germany, the best of which was "Just One Dance", a collaboration with Sarah herself...

  10. Yan's German Chart Comments - Issue Date August 8 Another week and still no changes at the German charts top spot, with Kid Rock clinging there for a seventh consecutive week after possible number one contenders Gabriela Cilmi and Paul Potts failing to take him down. The biggest new hit of the week belongs to Coldplay, who made the impossible in the UK and USA by hitting the number one spot with a song with no video. The guys however decided not to take any risks in Germany and simultaneously with the debut of the video for the marvellous "Viva La Vida" on German TV, the song enters the chart at #5. Needless to say it beats the #10 peak of "Violet Hill", Coldplay's previous single, and anstonishingly becomes their best charting song in Germany so far. We should also pay attention to Jason Mraz, who slowly has managed to break the top 10 barrier and climbs three places to #8 this week. He debuted in the chart some eight weeks ago. Let also not overlook the three positions jump of Amy MacDonald, in what is her second week in the chart. Now she can claim to be a real hitmaker in Germany . Well done! #17 Sido - The follow-up of Sido's highest charting single "Augen Auf" (peak #7) finds the German rapper in quite different new music fields, as he is actually "singing" this time. Nevertheless, Germans seem to like the new Sido as "Carmen", the second single of his latest album, manages to enter the top 20. #30 Guru Josh Project - The last single worth mentioning this week is the new version of the 1992 hit "Infinity", which enters the top 30 in its sixth week in the Top 100. Back in the early 1990s the original version of "Infinity", then credited to Guru Josh only, was a mega splash in the German speaking countries, reaching the #2 spot and staying 14 weeks in the German top 10. Guru Josh's other only single was called "Whose Law" and despite reaching #12 has been long forgotten.

So no German chart this week, I guess Ben is busy, or most probably on holiday ;), but for all interested you can find the charts here: http://www.viva.tv/Charts/ and may read my newest comments below :) Have great summer holidays ;) Another week and still no changes at the German charts top spot, with Kid Rock clinging there for a seventh consecutive week after possible number one contenders Gabriela Cilmi and Paul Potts failing to take him down. 13. Yan's German chart comments - Issue date: August 1 I guess there is nothing more to say for Kid Rock's total summer domination, especially after the man is going most probably to be this week's UK new number one. However, the 6-2 movement of Gabriela Cilmi in her second week in the German Top 100 may indicate that a new number one is approaching. And let's not underestimate the chances of Paul Potts to also hit the top spot, which I think would be the first download-only single to do so (If I'm wrong, please feel free to correct me below). The biggest new entry this time comes from one and only Madonna. Having in mind that "Give it 2 me" is her second single from the "Hard Candy" album, the eight position is actually quite good. However a lot of Madonna fans, plus me, will argue that "Give it 2 me" is the best song of the album and much better than the #1 smash "4 Minutes". :P Down the chart, I'm very glad to see Amy MacDonald's great "This Is The Life" beating the peak of her debut single in Germany ("Mr. Rock'n Roll" - peak #21). After all it's not often we see second singles performing better than the first ones, and especially of UK artists in Germany. As long as the other new entries are concerned, this week has a lot of flops down the chart. At #41 we find Cascada, whose try at the dance classic "Because the Night" does nothing to set the charts on fire. It's performance however is actually better than their last single "What Do You Want From Me", which reached only #54."Because the Night" original belongs to Co.Ro and. Taleesa, who scored a #16 peak back in 1993. However in 2002 German DJ Jan Wayne's take on the song crashed the charts reaching #4 and becoming one of my all-time favourite dance hits. At least Cascada fares quite better than Loona's failed attempt for comeback down at #64. Back in the late 1990s and early 2000s a new song of Loona, , would undoubtedly mean a top 10 smash and a guaranteed summer hit but I guess that time is long gone. "Bailando" and "Hijo De La Luna" are her biggest hits in Germany, both hitting the top spot in 1998. After the U.S. and UK fiasco of Mariah's "Bye Bye", it is not strange that the latest single of one of the most overrated singers in the world burns at #70...
  14. Kid Rock's song is good, but I'm already tired of it. So go on Katy Though I prefer her new U.S. single Hot N Cold, it's just amazing

  16. Yan's German Chart Comments - Issue date 25.07.2008 This week makes one thing clear - Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" is the 2008 summer anthem. At least in Germany, where the American rocker makes his fifth week at the top of the singles chart. The most surprising movement comes from Leona Lewis, whose superb "Better in Time" climes to #2 in its seventh week. Perhaps the sudden surge in the single's sales may be attributed to the fact that the EURO 2008 is finally over and Germans are beginning to appreciate some initially "overlooked" hits. Two places below her we find another winner of a UK TV contest format in the face of Paul Potts, whose take on Pavarotti's "Nessun Dorma" soars 8 places to enter the top 5. As time has shown - don't underestimate the power of advertising. This week's highest new entry belongs to Gabriella Cilmi at #6. After having somewhat surprising success in the UK, the 16-year old! Aussie proves that she is able to be a worldwide hitmaker. Well deserved feat if you ask me. What about the next most notable new entries: #15 Mia - "Mein Freund". The latest offering from German electropop band Mia turns to be their best charting song so far, beating the #19 peak of "Tanz der Molekuele" (which even re-enters the chart this week). As "Mein Freund" is for me their best song, you'll hear no complaints ;) #29 Klee - "Zwei Herzen". Similarly to Mia, Cologne-based German band Klee also scores its best performing song so far. Their previous peak has been with "Gold" at #54 in 2005. As long as the rest of the chart is concerned, it is populated with a lot of odd re-entries (I'm sure there should have been a reason behind most of them, but who knows). It is however good to mention the first time appearance of Lynyrd Skynyrd and his "Sweet Home Alabama". Of course the song's sales are boosted by the #1 placing of Kid Rock, whose hit samples that of Skynyrd. In addition it is always great to see such all time classics as "Time To Say Goodbye" and "Maid of Orleans" in the chart - curious fact is that the first one was the most selling single of 1997 and the second of 1982 in Germany.
  17. Oh, it's great that we have MTV Hits over here :P

  19. Yan's German Chart Comments - Issue Date 18.07 For those who have patiently waited ;) As most of the football anthems retreat this week, some quite needed new entries stir the Top 100. Nevertheless, still we see no change at the top as Kid Rock remains king for what is now a full month. His biggest competition this week comes from Fady Maalouf, the runner-up in the last season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar (DSDS), who lost to Thomas Godoj. "Blessed" is his first single and since the history has not been kind to all DSDS winners, let alone runner-ups, Fady will have to try harder to remain a hit maker. He has a potential, though ;) Some seven places below Fady we find Ne-Yo, who enters the chart with his worldwide smash "Closer". The song quite easily becomes his biggest hit in Germany after a three-time peak at #11 with debut "So Slick" and collaborations - "Sexual Healing" with Sarah Connor and "Hate That I Love You" with Rihanna. Perhaps the biggest surprise for the week comes from Paul Potts, the tenor who won Britain's Got Talent in 2007. After Deutsche Telekom used his performance of "Nessun Dorma" in an avertising spot, the demand for it became so high resulting into the song's entry at #12 on downloads alone. The most famous performance of "Nessun Dorma" is of course by legend Luciano Pavarotti, who also re-enters the chart at #61. The hype even leads to a re-entry of Paul's album in the Album Top 100. The next new-entry worth mentioning is from Moldovian singer Dan Balan now famous as Crazy Loop. Dan is not at all a stranger to the German charts as he was part of the trio O-Zone, which crashed all European charts with their "Dragostea Din Tea" back in 2004, making the eastern European music popular all over the continent. Further down the chart, we find Kylie Minogue and James Blunt, coming in at #41 and #43, respectively. As "Wow" and "Carry You Home" are the third offerings of the singers' latest albums, no surprises for not making the top 30. Kylie was last here with the amazing "In My Arms" peaking at #8, while James last single "Same Mistake" reached #27. That's all for this week. Oh, and I've forgotten the rabbit, sorry
  20. I'm a little out of time right now but hope that I will be able to post any comments over the next days ;)

  22. Yan's German chart comments - Issue date July 11 Another slow week for the German charts. The EURO 2008 is finally over and the summer holidays are just behind the doors, so no surprises at the top as Kid Rock scores a third consecutive week at the top of the singles charts with "All Summer Long". A fact, which I've forgotten to mention so far, is that the song samples Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" and Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama", which if my sources are right have never charted in Germany :o A place below and still in the top three, we find Revolverheld and their fan anthem "Helden". Actually, the period of observation of this week charts includes three days of EURO 2008 fever, which may be the explanation why the football hits are still around and up the chart. Even Enrique's "Can You Hear Me" manages to make a big jump and to enter the top 20 with his official EURO 2008 song. The honour of this week's highest new entry belongs to Busta Rhymes and his collaboration with Linkin Park. The song enters at #11 and I cannot do a commentary without comparing it to "Numb/Encore", the hit of Linkin Park and Jay Z, which peaked at #4 in Germany in 2005. Linkin Park's biggest solo success in the country is with "What I've Done", also reaching #4. Busta Rhymes is as well no stranger to the German top 100. His debut on these shores is with the somewhat rap classic "Woo-Hah!! Got You All In Check" (peak #42); his biggest solo hit is "Turn It Up / Fire It Up" (peak #7) and he was number one as a support artist for both Lumidee's "Never Leave You (Uh Oooh Uh Oooh)" and Pussycat Dolls' "Don't Cha". The next highest new entry comes from Kat Deluna, whose "Whine It Up" enters some 13 places behind Busta. A curious coincidence is that her current worldwide hit is "Run The Show", a collaboration with Busta himself. Already a huge hit here in Bulgaria, "Whine It Up" is the debut single of the U.S. singer with Dominican origins. Listening to it I just wished I was in Varna right now :w00t: and not in the bloody hot Sofia... But to return to the topic, the next entry worth mentioning comes from Flo Rida and "Elevator" at #34. Though "Low" was a massive hit all over the world (peak in Germany at #13), I've got the feeling that the man would have a hard time making a new splash soon. And to wrap up the comments this week, I should say how much disappointed I am from the flop of Nelly Furtado and Zero Assoluto at #64. It's a beutiful love song after all. For those who don't know Zero Assoluto are a very popular Italian pop duo and they deserve much more attention outside their domestic market. :P So that is for this week. Leaving the chart music aside, I'm going back to the wonderful soundtrack of Prince Caspian. Oh I'm loving it  ...
  23. Yeah, but I think that this is the official top 10 of 1990, while the one you posted is based on points depending on the song performance :) 001 Verdammt, ich lieb' Dich - Matthias Reim 002 Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O'Connor 003 Another Day In Paradise - Phil Collins 004 The Power - Snap! 005 Ooops Up - Snap! 006 Tom's Diner - DNA Feat.
