  4. Yan's German chart comments - Issue Date July 4 No big surprises this week in the German charts and as expected most of the football anthems are going up, boosted by the hopes that Germany might win the EURO 2008 cup. Of course the chart’s period of observance is just before the finale, which Germany as we all know lost. So no winning big prizes if someone guesses that the songs will go down next week. However, once again the biggest hit in the country is no football song but Kid Rock with his “All Summer Long”. Scoring a second week at the top, this continues to be the most unexpected number one in the year so far… As regards the football songs, the strongest impact on the Top 100 is made by The White Stripes. “Seven Nation Army” dates from 2003 but has never been in the German charts so far and as it became clear last week the single was sung before every game during the EURO 2008, which explains the gigantic leap from #69 to number 5, and that only on downloads . It’s better late than never… I should also mention Hoehner, whose “Wenn nicht jetzt wann dann”, initially handball anthem, has also joined the league of the football hits and now jumps from #53 to #15. The song was a number one smash last year. Going down to the lower end of the top 20, we find Jason Mraz  , who quite deservingly climbs 10 places to show that the world is not only football. The biggest new entry of the week comes in four places below, where German band Marquess enters with “La Vida Es Limonada”. I don’t wanna make any conclusions but the song is in Spanish, Spain beat Germany for the EURO 2008 cup, so the prospects for this single might be quite gloomy… But let’s not forget that it’s summer after all. Marquess’ biggest hit is “Vayamos Companeros” taking the silver medal in 2007. The other new entry worth mentioning belongs to Enrique Iglesias with the EURO 2008 official hymn “Can You Hear Me?”. Having in mind the success of the other tournament hits, the 36 position of this song may be seen by some as a flop. Enrique’s greatest success in Germany has been with “Hero” and its number three position.

  6. Yan's German Chart Comments - Issue Date 27.06 Quite a slow chart in Germany this week. I guess that everyone's attention is towards Austria and the fact that the German football team is one of the finalists of the EURO 2008. Despite that the football mania is reaching its peak, surprisingly all football anthems fall down this week. Perhaps everyone interested has already bought the songs, which leads the way to a lot of no soccer related singles to climb back. The biggest news is however at the number one position. Boosted by its physical release, "All Summer Long" of Kid Rock easily replaces Shaggy's "Feel The Rush" at the top. Thus "All Summer Long" is not only Kid Rock's greatest success in Germany (I may bet that it will be a worldwide smash) but becomes the second number one single this summer to actually have the word summer in the title. The other is of course Mark Medlock's "Summer Love". The highest new entry this week is way down at #23 and the debut single of Nelly's latest album. "Party Peole" may have a hit potential but burned quite quickly outside the top 10 in UK and perhaps it won't do big things in Germany as well. And as a pilot single, I think that the rapper and his music label should think a little on what has gone wrong. Nelly's biggest, albeit not best ^_^ , hit is of course "Dilemma". As I've already mentioned, the chart is so quiet, that we find the next new entry as low as the number 64, where "The Best Damn Thing", the fourth single of Avril Lavigne taken from the album with the same name, flops. "Complicated" and "Girlfriend" are the two best charting songs of Avril, reaching #3 in 2002 and 2007, respectively. I have the feeling that there is something behind the new entry of the quite ancient "Seven Nation Army" of White Stripes, but I do not live in Germany so I don't know what it may be   Oh, and it is on heavy rotation at VIVA... It might be in the top 30 in a week or two :o See ya next week, perhaps with the EURO 2008 cup :cheer:

  8. 10x for reading carefully, yes, it is only one, I don't know why I've got the wrong impression that Rihanna is at #8 :D
  9. Yan's German Chart Comments - Issue Date June 20 As the EURO 2008 tournament is slowly but certainly reaching its peak, with Germany still in it, the upward movement of most of the soccer anthems this week is no surprise at all. However, I would have never bet that Shaggy's "Feel The Rush" had the potential to reach the number one and to remove the idol Thomas Godoj just after two weeks at the top. So "Feel The Rush" becomes Shaggy's second single to hit the top spot after (the awful) "Angel" smashed the charts back in 2001. The football fever, or should I say Fieber, continues with Revolverheld (up 3 to #3), Oliver Pocher (#8) and most notably with Christina Stuermer's "Fieber" (up 21 to #13) and Elton's "Allemann" (up amazing 47 places to #26). Expect all these to disappear quickly once the tournament is over. Leaving the sport issue aside, we have to deal with the new entries as we find three strong new hits in the top 10 this week. To my greatest surprise the biggest new entry comes not from Rihanna or from Monrose, but from American rocker Kid Rock. The song is cool but who may have predicted that it would be able to go straight in the top five in its first week in the charts? Kid Rock's best performance in Germany has been with "American Bad Ass" peaking at #26 in 2000. The second highest new entry belongs to Rihanna, who continues her string of hits with the amazing "Take A Bow". The other singles from her "Good Girl Gone Bad" album performed as follows: "Umbrella" (#1), "Don't Stop The Music" (#1), "Hate That I Love You" (#11) and "Shut Up And Drive" (#6). Not bad at all... One place below the Barbados girl, we find Monrose and the debut single of their latest album called "I Am". "Strike The Match" does not interrupt the top ten success of the girls, who so far have always charted in the upper reaches of the Top 100. Monrose have topped the countdown twice, with "Shame" and "Hot Summer". However, it should be mentioned that if "Strike The Match" does not advance further it would be the lowest point of their career so far. #28 Fettes Brot - "Erdbeben" is the second single of Fettes Brot's "Strom und Drang" album. Unfortunately it charts quite lower than "Bettina, zieh Dir bitte etwas an" which reached number three. Great video though... #30 Aloha from Hell - "Don't Gimme That" - After winning a contest of Bravo magazine, Aloha from Hell signed a deal with SonyBMG, but let's hope that they will have a greater success in the future before the record label drops them. #46 Seal - "Right Life" - No surprises from the fact that the second single of Seal's latest album cannot repeat the success of "Amazing", which did not leave the top 20 for several months. Still Seal remains more popular in Germany than in other countries such as UK. #52 Dima Bilan - "Believe" - Fooled by VIVA, which put Dima on heavy rotation over the last weeks, I thought that the song would be a hit in Germany. At least it does better than last year's Eurovision winner, Marija, who did not even enter the Top 100. However, the top-five feat of Lordi now seems so long ago... :w00t:

  11. Yan’s German Chart Comments – Issue Date June 13 No changes in the top three of the German singles chart this week and latest DSDS winner Thomas Godoj spends a second week at the number one, followed closely by Mark Medlock and Duffy. Two places below we find the highest new entry for the week belonging to Leona Lewis and her second single “Better In Time”. The success of the song makes it clear – Leona is no one-hit wonder! For the few who don’t know, “Bleeding Love” was a number one smash in Germany at the start of the year. Well done to Leona but what about the rest of the chart. Most of this week’s stir is caused by the EURO 2008 as most of the tournament anthems go higher led by Revolverheld with “Helden 2008” at #6 and by Shaggy with “Feel The Rush” at #8. And some comments on the rest of the countdown: #11 Jordin Sparks – “No Air” – Despite the success of “Tattoo” abroad, “No Air” is the first single of Jordin to enter the German charts. Thus she becomes quite deservingly the second American Idol winner after Kelly Clarkson to launch a successful career outside USA. #22 Lil Wayne – “Lollipop” – Lil Wayne may be a huge star in the States, but he had to wait until this week to make some impact on the German top 100. “Lollipop” is his solo debut in the chart. #26 Jonas Brothers – “SOS” – Just behind Jordin and Lil Wayne, Jonas Brothers are the next big import from USA to storm the German chart. “SOS” is their debut on those shores. #28 Udo Lindenberg – “Ganz anders” – This is the second single to be taken from Udo’s highly successful “Stark wie zwei” album. The first “Wenn du durchaengst” reached #10 and thus became one of his biggest hits. #41 Sam Sparro + #42 The Ting Tings – Great to see two wonderful songs and massive hits in the UK in the top 50 in Germany. Fingers crossed they will advance higher. #53 Kleiner Hai – “Kleiner Hai” – The video for the small shark is a phenomenon on YouTube and for everyone who knows a word or two in German it could be a great fun. :cheer: #59 Rednex – “Football Is Our Religion” – As “Wish You Were Here” and “Spirit Of The Hawk” (both #1s in Germany) are high in my all-time hit list, I cannot say anything else except that I love them.

  13. Yan's German Chart Comments - Issue Date 6.06.2008 Two major things happen this week in the German Top 100. First, the new music idol changes the previous at the top and second, the soccer anthems are invading the countdown in a way that you may think the EURO 2008 is in Germany and not in Austria and Switzerland. So after three weeks at the top, Mark Medlock has to step one place down as Thomas Godoj storms the charts. The winner of the fifth season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar (DSDS), who if you ask me lacks any charisma, follows the footsteps of Alexander, Tobias Regner and Mark to score a direct number one hit. Elli, the only female winner of DSDS, is the only one who not reached the top spot in Germany. Whether Thomas' career will be successful like that of Alexander and Mark, or his chart success will burn quickly as Tobias and Elli, time will tell but according to Media Control, he has the best starting week in terms of sales in 2008 so far... Off topic - it's a strange coincidence that the announced this Monday new Bulgarian Idol is also called Thoma... Speaking of the soccer songs, down at #6 we find the second highest new entry of the week belonging to one of my favourite German bands Revolverheld. "Helden 2008", the athem of the fans of the German soccer team, becomes their biggest hit to date, beating the #14 peak of "Freunde bleiben". The last single of the boys in the Top 100 was "Unzertrennlich"  , which shamefully flopped outside the top 40. As the rest of the countdown is concerned: #10 Shaggy - "Feel The Rush" - The team up of Shaggy with the EURO 2008 mascots Trix and Flix  has resulted in one of the official anthems for the tournament and I'm sure that it will make a lot of spectators dance on the Austrian and Swiss stadiums. Shaggy is of course no stranger to the chart, with "Angel" being a number one smash in 2001. #31 (up from 50) - No Angels - "Disappear" - The massive jump of 19 places can be of a consolation for the girls after the Eurovision fiasco. The song is superb and its a shame only Bulgaria gave it maximum points at the Eurovision. However, I have the feeling that winner Dima Bilan can be expected in the upper reaches of the chart next week... #34 Mickie Krause - "Supa Deutschland" - The next football song to enter the chart (look at the influx of re-entries at the end of the Top 100) comes from German schlager singer Mickie Krause, whose best charting song is "10 nackte Friseusen" with a peak #26 in 1999. Perhaps his most famous song is "Finger Im Po - Mexiko" from last year. #44 Christina Stuermer - "Fieber" - The fact that Christina is Austrian and the EURO 2008 is in Austria does not help the single to be a hit in Germany. #46 Alanis Morissette - "Underneath" - No surprises from the flop of Alanis' latest offer. Her most successful song in Germany is the classic "Ironic" reaching #8 in 1996. So that's all folks for this week ;) You may enjoy the EURO 2008 or watch Sex and The City: The Movie again. It's up to you :P

  19. It's great of course ;) Anything that makes the German chart thread more informative and interesting is more than welcome And maybe it's time for once again to ask if someone has any recommendations on the thread (the chart/my comments etc.) to put them below :)
  20. Yan's German Chart Comments - Issue Date May 30 Another week has gone and my predictions for Madonna having the strength to return to the #1 have proven wrong as the lady slips one place to the third position. Thus Mark Medlock remains for a third consecutive time king of the German top 100, making "Summer Love" the first official summer anthem for 2008. I will not comment his lacklustre performance at the VIVA Comet Awards as I'm still fascinated by the collaboration of Ich + Ich (oh how I love them  ) and Sido during the show. Speaking of Sido, this week's honour for highest new entry goes to the German rapper and "Augen Auf" becomes quite easily his biggest hit in the country, proving the German hip hop is still alive and kicking. So far Sido's highest peak has been the somewhat genre classic "Mein Block" which reached #13 in 2004. "Augen Auf" is the debut single from his latest album "Ich und meine Maske " Three places below the man in the mask we find Belgian cover queen Kate Ryan. Her latest "Ella Elle L'a" is a cover of the France Gall smash hit, which reached number one in Germany in 1988. Unlike Gall, Kate has never been atop the German charts, despite that her debut single in the country "Desenchantee" peaked at #2 back in 2003. So what about the rest of the chart: #12 - Sara Bareilles - "Love Song" - After being a major hit all over the world, it's time for the American singer to score big in Germany, boosting the female power once again the chart... #30 - Ashlee Simpson - "Outta My Head" - Ashlee has never been a huge star in Germany, with "Pieces of Me" (peak #26) being her biggest hit so far. "Outta My Head" is the first single taken from her latest album "Bittersweet World". In comparison, sister's Jessica most successful song in the country has been "These Boots Are Made For Walking" with a peak at #17 in 2005. #33 - Snow Patrol - "Chasing Cars" - I think it is the n-time this song re-enters the German chart. #34 (up from #66) - Jennifer Kae - "Little White Lies" - With that jump, it seems that the performance of the debut single of the German singer should be observed over the following weeks. #43 - Chakuza ft Bushido - "Unter der Sonne" - The most successful song of the Austrian rapper has been "Eure Kinder" with a peak at #25 last year. #49 - Markus Becker - "Das rote Pferd" - Oooh, the horse is back.... Info on the other new entries upon request ;) See ya! :P
  21. Yan's German chart comments (issue date May 23, 2008) Sorry for the late and short comments this week but the Black Sea coast and the bars in the city of Varna are too tempting and I don’t have much time.... :yahoo: As the German chart is concerned nothing has changed at the top and Mark Medlock manages to score a second week as the German number one. The highest new entry comes from US megastar Usher, with his wonderful “Love in This Club”, which comes in at #5. Thus the new single becomes Usher’s third biggest hit in Germany after the number one smash “Yeah” and the duet with Alicia Keys “My Boo” (peak #4). Two places behind Usher we find the guys from US5, the band cast in the Big in America TV show and produced by Lou Pearlman, who quite easily score their ninth consecutive top 10 hit in Germany. Despite the fact that the boys are more or less famous only in Germany and the nearby countries, their fanbase seems to continue to be strong. “Round & Round” (no relation to the Sugababes song) is the first single taken from US5’s third album. Their only number one hit, despite several top 3 singles, is the guys’ debut “Maria”. The next big news comes from the lads from Coldplay as the magnificent “Violet Hill” enters the top 100 at number ten and thus becomes their biggest success in Germany. Since I’m loving the song, the fact that it beats the #19 peak of “Speed of Sound” makes me extremely happy... Well done boys! #13 Oliver Pocher – “Bringt ihm heim” – Oliver, the man who started his career at VIVA to become one of the most famous German TV show hosts, is no stranger to the German charts. His smash “Schwarz und weiss” was one of the anthems of the world soccer cup two years ago and peaked at #3. This time around, Pocher once again relies on the sports subject as “Bringt ihm heim” is one of the first songs (more are coming) related to the EURO 2008 in Austria and Switzerland to enter the German chart. So that is for this week. I hope that I will have time to add some more statistics soon... See ya next weekend
