Local radio - BBC and commercial even more so use playlists like Radios 1 & 2. The DJ might be able to slip one or two in per hour - or take the odd request but it is still playlisted. In fact nearly every run of the mill local commercial station has a blander music policy than Radio 1. The probable exeptions are the more niche stations; Kiss, Galaxy, Choice, Kerrang & XFM. That's if we're talking about FM/AM - digital is more diverse but with generally dire qudio quality on DAB (Freeview, Sky & cable are not as bad). So I find it interesting that you choose to listen to local radio because DJ's have become musically ingnorant. I thought that most local commercial DJ's were bland, musically ignorant and unable to do anything other than press a button to play the next playlisted track and read out station info or stuff from the papers. I'd be interested to know what local station you're refering to! As for when the charts died - that's eveyone's personal opinion influenced by lot's of things. For me good chart years were 1984, 1989, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998 & 2000.

Press release from end of October. I've just come across it: After losing out to Radio 1's Official Chart Show in the last audience survey for the very first time in over a decade, hit40uk has climbed back up to become the nation's favourite chart show once again. The latest audience figures were released last Thursday, and coincided with the relaunch of the show, with Capital Radio drivetime's Lucio taking over Simon Hirst as presenter, and with EMAP's Big City Network stations replacing the Galaxy Network. hit40uk recorded over 400,000 more listeners compared to Radio 1, with 2,265,000 of the national audience tuning in. With the addition of the EMAP stations, hit40uk forecasts that this will boost the figures to more than 2.4 million.

  7. Singles: 1. Akon - 35000 2. Justin Timberlake - 30000 4. Take That - 22000 (downloads only) Thanks to Lucio @ HIT40UK.
  8. Although I'd prefer an Xmas cover like Mariah's AIWFCIY, I think that there's about 0% chance of that happening. Why? Well ITV/Granada/Cowell would like an original track so they can cream off more revenue from royalties from the huge sales that the single would generate on top off all the text/phone votes. I don't think writing a cheque out for several hundred thousand pounds to the writer of All I Want for Christmas is You is in their minds at all.

It's not just commercial radio though that makes up this list, although given the number of stations and their total audience reach they will have the most significant input. BBC: R1,R2,Wales,Cymru,Scotland,Ulster and BBC Local Radio, will I think, all have airplay included into the list. Isn't it worked out by total reach of a song to the audience? So if a song is played on Wogan or Moyles at breakfast it is like the equivalent of about 50 plays on the average local commercial station?
  10. Singles: 1. My Chemical Romance - 29000, 2. Razorlight - 22000. Thanks to Lucio @ Hit40UK.
  11. Lucio - he does Capital FM (London) drivetime 4-7pm. I can well imagine that this will be the last week for sales figures being given out on air regularly. We have to hope that MW will post their info asap.
  12. Singles: 1. My Chemical Romance - 33000 2. Razorlight - 28000 3. Scissor Sisters - 19000 Thanks to Simon Hirst for the last time @ Hit40UK.
  13. Hang on - I've just got this off the Radiojam website: All change for Hit 40 UK Lucio is the new presenter of Hit 40 UK, Radiojam can exclusively reveal. Current presenter Simon Hirst will stand down as presenter of the national commercial chart show after three years. The decision was made after it was announced the Fresh 40 will finally launch on commercial radio - an urban chart first proposed last year, alongside the A List. MC Dynamite will present the chart, which was delayed because no key sponsor could be found. The Fresh 40 will begin broadcasting on the Galaxy network, while the A List is carried by Chrysalis' Heart stations, meaning that the Hit 40 UK will not be carried by any Chrysalis station. At the same time, Emap's Big City stations will drop the Smash Hits Chart in favour of Hit 40 UK. It's understood that Emap specfically objected to Hirst presenting the chart on their stations, as they were unprepared to promote a presenter who competes directly with key stations in the Big City network - Hirst presents breakfast on Galaxy 105 across Yorkshire attracting half a million listeners every week, to the detriment of Emap's Hallam FM, Radio Aire and Viking FM. Lucio is expected to present Hit 40 UK for the first time at the end of October, which will coincide with the launch of Fresh 40 on Galaxy, Kiss and several other commercial stations across the UK. So it looks like from the 22/10 the will be Hit40UK, The A-List and Fresh40, along with Radio 1. It also explains the politics behind the dropping of Simon Hirst. It's not too surprising that a Capital FM dj has got the gig - after all all the others were from Capital (David Jensen, Neil Fox, Pat Sharp). Also expect an Emap dj to do the holiday fill-ins too imo.
  14. Lucio to take over hit40uk National chart show hit40uk, produced by Somethin' Else has dropped presenter Simon Hirst in favour of Capital Radio drivetime host Lucio. Simon has been presenting the show for just over two years, since Neil Fox stepped down after 11 years to concentrate on other work. Even though hit40uk is second in the ratings to Radio 1's chart, he told Media Guardian today: "I'm fully confident that within just three to six months, the new show that we are putting together will be the most listened to chart show in the country. "The dismal, bland and cheesy excuse for a chart that Radio 1 broadcast will really be no contest for us," he added. Emap are ready to drop their own Smash Hits Chart in favour of hit40uk as the Lucio gets ready to present his first show next weekend (22nd October). So Emap's stations: Metro, TFM, Viking, Aire FM, Hallam FM, Key 103, City FM & Rock FM will start to (re)take Hit40UK a week on Sunday. One question is what will happen to the Galaxy stations in these areas that took Hit40UK when Emap started the Smashhits! chart in 2003? There was supposed to be a new national dance chart show starting on Galaxy and Kiss (London), as well as some others. I've not heard anything about these yet though.
  15. Singles: 1. Razorlight - 32753 2. Scissor Sisters - 27180. 3. The Hoff (David Hasselhoff) - 26620. Thanks to Simon Hirst @ Hit40UK
