Chart Show Themes/Jingles/Idents
I posted my collection of jingles from various chart related shows a few months back on another similar forum - they were pretty popular. So I've decided to post them here in the next few days. If you have any favourites - post now. It's all a bit anoracky I know, but listening to them brings back memories. They are real and not recorded off air on a radio. They are from all generations - 60s to present. I'll post in this thread with links to files to download.

Sales dropping?
I read somewhere that all the top 5 sold over 100k that week. That was the week that Chef went to number 1. Historically sales fluctuations have been cyclicle. When the charts began sales were very low - probably on a par with todays figures (with chart only downloads included). In the early-mid 1960s when the Beatles were having million sellers, the sales were pretty high taking into account the lack of so many different genres like today. In the early 70s sales slumped and albums took off - then at the end of the 70s into the early 80s sales rose again to record levels in 78/79. There was another drop in sales from 1987-1994, with 1992 being the worst (but considerably more than at present). Then another high occured from 1995-1999. 1996/8/9 were almost the same yearly sales, 1997 with Candle In The Wind skewed the trend somewhat. These low periods have always recovered to healthy sales figures. Although the problem is that these periods have never had to contend with the digital era of downloads. The recording industry and retailers were far too slow in recognising the fact that this was another market for sales - rather than it being a problem for them with piracy and undermining the profit margin in CDs. If in 1998/99/2000 they had started to offer mp3 downloads at good prices, then digital piracy would not be the huge problem in the developed world like physicals are in parts of Asia. If they had started before Napster then it might not have become as popular as it did - spawning dozens of other filesharing programmes since. Now it is just a game of catchup and damage limitation because of their myopia. I think we will be lucky to see genuine chart sales (not sales of archived material included) rise above 60 million a year in the next 10 years.

Radio 1 Overtakes Hit40UK
I thought this might interest some of you. Rajar is the main radio audience research company in the UK, measuring both BBC and commercial radio. This is Q2 2006 - published Aug 2006. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RAJAR: Radio 1 overtakes hit40uk The Radio 1 Chart Show has, for the first time, overtaken commercial radio's Network Chart Show hit40uk in listenership in the battle of the radio Top 40 countdowns. Commercial radio has reigned ever since the launch of the Pepsi-sponsored network chart show, launched way back in 1993. But RAJAR has today reported that Radio 1 seem to have finally found the winning combination to conquer the Sunday afternoon airwaves with JK and Joel at the helm. JK and Joel joined Radio 1 in 2004 and took over as presenters of the BBC's Top 40 countdown in March 2005. A new format was introduced, whereby only the Top 20 tracks in the UK charts are fully aired. The former half of the show in this new format was controversially filled with showbiz, competitions and general entertainment. However, soon after the relaunch, downloads were also introduced into the compilation of the countdown for the first time in UK chart history, rejuvenating the interest of the British music consumers back in the charts. Since the last survey quarter (of a half year analysis period), hit40uk have dropped 113,000 listeners over the age of 4 to 1,858,000 listeners, whereas Radio 1 have climbed by 35,000 to a total of 1,865,000. The gap stands at a mere 8,000 listeners. The A List artist chart, which was launched in March on commercial radio to complement hit40uk is yet to have been included in the RAJAR survey, but will probably be accounted for the the drop in audience figures for hit40uk, presently hosted by Galaxy 105 DJ, Simon Hirst. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MORE JK & Joel anyone? ;)

Early 90s Singles Sales Data
I'm becoming ever more convinced that sales data is going on trade sales (or shipments). The Top100 of All Time chart is, I'm sure, based on shipments to trade rather than real over the counter retail sales. It may be the same for year end charts in the 80s and 90s. Can anyone enlighten me, or back this theory up?

Early 90s Singles Sales Data
I think you are right in a sense. Thinking back I remember the newspapers saying that Stiltskin had orders of 100k - and then it went to number 1. Although I think I remember reading afterwards when Manchester Utd had similar pre-orders that it didn't sell that many during that week. I think that there is a distinction between trade deliveries (or what I have called shipments) and retail sales to the consumer. The quarterly figures for retail sales for 1994 according to the BPI were: Q1 - 77500 Q2 - 73800 Q3 - 97600 Q4 - 96100 The % sales of the number 1 in Q1 1994 was 8.56%. The average weekly retail sales in Q1 1994 was 905,400 - this works out at 77502 as the weekly average across the 13 weeks of Q1. If you look at the trade delivery sales in 1994 the total was 63m. Q1 - 14.588m Q2 - 14.732m Q3 - 16.113m Q4 - 17.616m If you were to assume that the 8.56% also appies to trade deliveries, then you get the following weekly average trade sales for 1994: Q1 - 96056 Q2 - 97005 Q3 - 106098 Q4 - 115995 1994 Average 103789. Although Q4 would be higher than 8.56% imo because of higher year end sales and Xmas. I think that this is where you are getting the 100k for most weeks from. The OCC website quotes the 15 weeks sales for Wet Wet Wet - they average 67k a week. If 'most' weeks were doing upto 100k, then there's absolutely no way Wet Wet Wet would have been no1 for so long. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Early 90s Singles Sales Data
Hmmm, I'm not sure about most were getting close to 100k a week? Do you have any actual figures that would help me to compile a list? I'm not sayin gthat these are 100% accurate - it's a sort of project. According to the Zobbel site the average sales for number 1's in each quarter were as follows: Q1 1994 - 77500 Q2 1994 - 73800 Q3 1994 - 97600 Q4 1994 - 96100. Zobbel quotes these figures as coming from the BPI. Quarter 1 was slightly higher because of what I can see is Mariah Carey - she sold 560k with just 4 weeks at number 1 and then fell fairly quickly after that. Q3 is skewed because of the 1st 3 weeks of Whigfield selling so well - otherwise it would have been about 72k. Q4 is traditionally higher - and so skewed by East 17's Xmas number 1 - which was the 3rd best seller of the year after just 4 weeks at number 1 (and a no7). Again I'm not saying they are spot on - I've looked at the year end chart, chart positions and runs and known artist and track sales figures for the year. Oh and www.zobbel.de I would appreciate comments, but please back them up with facts and data so I can get this more accurate then others can rely on it in the future. -)

Early 90s Singles Sales Data
Cheers Mikey - I was using that Australian Site for the Top50 :) I've also seen those Wet's figures on the OCC website. I know that they are on the OCC website and everything, but I cannot see how they managed to end up selling 1.78m from just over 1m over the course of 15 weeks - that's why I've put 1.34m to retail. I've seen data that that was one of my sources for these sales stats that also says 1.78m in the year for the Wet's. As it spent several weeks in the top 75 in early 1995 then the 1.78m for 1994 is wrong. I'm assuming that the 1.78m is trade shipments. If so then where do all the other 400k of sales come from?

Early 90s Singles Sales Data
I've been looking for sales data pre 1995 - and it is scant to say the least. So I've done some homework and come up with what I think are the sales for the top 50 singles of 1994. :D I am working on the number 1 weekly sales for 1994 too, but this is more complex and harder to tie into multiple sources - I've got a rough version, but I'm double checking it. ;) Any help please? UK Radio Audience Data Q1 2006
Yes the total UK population is about 60m. Although for listener figures they usually only take data to be published for the 15+ ages, sometimes 4+ (4+ for tv too). This works out at 49,377,000 approx. Now the % share of listening is 90% out of that 49.3m - this means that 10% have not listened once over the 3 months of the survey - that's the 44m figure. If you then multiply those who have listened in the 3 months with the number of hours that each listener usually listens each week (23.8) then that gives the total listened to hours each week: this comes to the 1,054,084,000 - so that's over 1 billion hours of of listening to UK radio each week. As for mergers - well yes it's a gripe for a lot of people (me too in some respects). The problem is that a lot of networking takes place. The regulator OFCOM won't let commercial radio do this in peak periods during the day, but in the evening, at night and more at weekends. This means that every station within an owned group will have the same networked programmes. If you happen to live south of Nottingham/Derby/Shropshire then most stations are owned by Gcap Radio - this leads to every station that neighbours each other to have the same output. Several years ago it would have been possible to tune around and listen to an out of area station with a different show - thereby in a sense extending listener choice. When you say that they all seem to be struggling - well that's true in a sense. The BBC has about 55% share of all listening. This 50-55% split to the BBC has been the case for 17 or so years. The thing is though commercial radio has seen station numbers treble in that time, whilst the BBC have only opened up 4 or 5 on FM or MW and they still can't eat into the BBC's figures - this must say something about commercial radio imo.
