  1. Jailhouse Rock - Elvis Presley The "Virgin Book of Hit Singles Vol 2" using OCC figures has Jailhouse Rock at 870,000 (page 373) as of chart date 10th April 2010. I estimate the sales as: Year - Sales (Cumulative Sales) 1958 - 700,000 1971 - 35,000 (735,000) 1972 - 5,000 (740,000 1977 - 25,000 (765,000) 1983 - 25,000 (790,000) 2004 - (810,000) 2005 - 45,000 (855,000) 2010 - (870,000) For the 30 Biggest Selling Songs From The Movies list, the OCC appear to have excluded the download and 2005 reissue sales.
  2. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b010hb83 Tony Blackburn returns to BBC Radio 2 for another special bank holiday chart [25th April] and this time counts down the 30 biggest selling songs from the movies, of all time (in the UK). Using sales data provided by The Official Charts Company, a track is only eligible for this chart if it was recorded specifically for a film. Previously released songs later included on film soundtracks have not been included. (I don't know why OCC has included Rock Around The Clock - this was a previously released single added to Blackboard Jungle. Also Strangers In The Night was recorded as an instrumental score for A Man Could Get Killed and the Sinatra version was released subsequently). The chart is based on physical and download sales, up to and including 27th February 2011. I have estimated likely total sales and would be interested if anyone has any suggestions, particularly for those still selling in quantity like Ghostbusters and Eye Of The Tiger. Here is a link to the MTV website page with its Official Countdowns: http://www.mtv.co.uk/music/charts/official-uk-countdowns Plenty of interesting information and sales figures. Particularly fascinating to see pre-2000 songs from ABBA and Bon Jovi, and the totals from Simon Cowell's Top 50.
  5. Dave, your postings of old sales lists are invaluable. I look forward to the 1950s post when you have the time.

Years with 53 chart weeks in the 1990s and 2000s: 1992, 1998, 2004, 2009 The chart year for 2009 mirrors that of 2004, the last time that there were 53 chart weeks. Week 1 in 2004 was coincidentally also week-ending 10th January. As 2004 was a leap year, week 53 was of course a day earlier than 2009 (week-ending 8th January).

The article at http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/ca3d0620-9cd7-11...144feabdc0.html is written by a reporter called Andrew Edgecliffe-Johnson in New York. It seems that 5m remastered CDs and 50,000 mono boxsets were shipped throughout the world prior to release.
  9. A really good programme on Radio 2 was "Record Producers: The Extended Cut - Sir George Martin": http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00mk..._George_Martin/ It's available until Sat 12th Sep on BBC iplayer. "The next extended edition of The Record Producers profiles a man often labelled "The Fifth Beatle" - Sir George Martin. Richard Allinson and Steve Levine examine his work as a producer, arranger and, through his experiments with sound, technical innovator.Highlights include the first chance to hear the newly restored version of the original master tapes for Please Please Me, a close up look at both Martin's orchestration for She's Leaving Home and the recording of A Day In The Life. Steve Levine also recreates the mellotron part from the opening of Strawberry Fields forever. The programme also contains examples of a recent technological development that gives 6 Music listeners the opportunity to hear some of the Beatles most famous songs in a new way. Because of the limitations of tape machines during the 1960s, it was necessary to either record or mix various instruments and voices onto the same track. Once they'd been committed to tape there was no way of separating them. But now, through the use of revolutionary software, there's the chance to hear some of these parts in isolation for the very first time. But the undoubted highlight of the programme is the in-depth look at the eight track recording of Come Together. In his exclusive interview, Sir George talks about various aspects of the studio and recording process, the albums Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road, along with a number of songs, including Strawberry Fields Forever, Tomorrow Never Knows and Rain".
  10. Back For Good - Take That (1995) It sold 725,000 in the 1990s. It is not included in a top twenty list of biggest selling downloads of singles from the 1990s published in Music Week on 11th July 2009. The top twenty I estimate all sold over 40,000 downloads since 2004. Basing an estimate on other 1990s singles (like Spice Girls sales since 1999) I guess that it is likely to have sold between 750,000 and 760,000 to date.
  11. Very interesting figures that you discovered. I agree with you that to date it is higher but the chart above is to 2002, not subsequent sales. So in 2002 it had sold around 935,000 copies. A few weeks ago (w/e 11-07-2009) Music Week had an article about downloads since iTunes began in June 2004. Dancing Queen from its position in the 1970s chart appears to have sold over 120,000 on download. Therefore its total to date is over 1,060,000 I would guess.
  12. Thanks for your input. The Ultimate Chart of 7th September 2002 gave a figure of 1,234,982. We have taken the new figure of 930,000 by estimating the sales in relation to its position from the Top 40 of the 1990s recently broadcast on VH1 and TMF music TV channels. The estimate is around 225,000 in 1994 and and over 700,000 in 1995, making about 930,000 by 1999.
  13. Ultimate Chart 2002 [amended] by Simon W and Fiesta: The Ultimate Chart was first broadcast on 7th September 2002 and celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Singles Chart by setting out the top 100 selling singles in UK from 1952 to 2002. Since then, there have been some reappraisals of 1990s singles sales as the chart compiler The Official Charts Company has: 1) gathered together details of over the counter record sales direct from companies (shipments less returns) and 2) built better computer models of the marketplace through experience. The new estimates (mainly covering 1994 to 1996) are apparent from sales mentioned in Music Week and in charts broadcast on music channels over the last couple of years, such as “Boybands of the 90s”, “Top 100 90s debuts”, “90s R ‘n’ B hits”, and “Top 40 of the 90s”. Fiesta, like me, has spent many years gathering together facts and figures, and recently we pooled our resources to put together an updated Ultimate Chart. We have used the same cut-off date. The corrected estimates of 1994 to 1996 produce quite a few changes. There were 71 million sellers between 1952 and 2002. We don’t believe that there are any other singles that sold over 930,000 copies; the closest are probably What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For - Emil Ford and the Checkmates (1959), and Help! - The Beatles (1965), both having sold around 920,000. The advent of downloads has meant that many of the top 100 have sold quite a few thousand since 2002 without being officially re-released or making the published singles charts. This makes it impossible to produce an accurate up-to-date top 100 in 2009 without breaking into the OCC computer. We may have to wait until the 60th anniversary in 2012 for a new list. It should be quite accurate but no doubt there are some mistakes! Any comments are very welcome: The Ultimate Chart (amended) The UK’s Best-Selling Singles, 14th November 1952 to W/E 7th September 2002 Title Artist Year Sales 1 Something About The Way You Look Tonight / Candle In The Wind 1997 Elton John 1997 4,864,611 2 Do They Know It’s Christmas? So some of the above figures are likely to have altered. I believe that the top 3 and a to c are pretty accurate.
  15. Between 29-12-2008 and 01-01-2009, Radio 2 broadcast a series called "30 at 50", celebrating the 50th birthdays of Michael Jackson, Madonna, Motown and Prince. Each programme was based around the Top 30 selling singles of the artist(s), based on the Official Charts Company database. These are reproduced on the Radio 2 website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/30at50
  16. My subsequent post #18, which amalgamates two separate OCC charts, includes One Day In Your Life (1981), I Just Can’t Stop Loving You (Michael Jackson and Siedah Garrett) (1987) and Farewell My Summer Love (1984).

  19. I believe that this chart has sales from a date between weeks 49 and 50, that is, 6th to 13th December [between chart dates w/e 13th December and 20th December]. So it is missing two to three weeks sales from 2008. By the end of the 1980s it had sold over 730,000 copies. It should be at number 2 in the above chart. I Just Can’t Stop Loving You (Michael Jackson and Siedah Garrett) (1987) was the 30th best seller of 1988, with 299,000 copies as reported at the time. This places it in the top 15 above.
