Radio 1 Playlist (21/05/08)
Sara Bareilles on A List on both Radio 1 and 2. I have been able to avoid her for six months in the US by only listening to Radio 1 and 2. And now she's on both A Lists; I can only tolerate the song for 30 seconds and then start yelling "will she ever finish this song?" I can only hope she'll have a short shelf life and be dropped in one or two weeks; the great British public and BBC rarely let me down. Great for Vampire Weekend on the A list, but the Guillemots, Royworld, and Elbow need to be moved up as well. Thrilled that 4 Minutes is finally gone; please let this be the final week for September and Sam Sparro. Sam Sparro is about to reach the top of the Radio 1 overplayed club dethroning Princess Superstar and David Guetta.

Coldplay Violet Hill - Chart Eligible?
I meant every word. Coldplay is the best rock group ever and I've been following music for a very long time.

Coldplay Violet Hill - Chart Eligible?
I hope you're right about the Coldplay songs being eligible. I've been worried all afternoon. Having two Coldplay songs in the top 10 chart would be like the Beatles all over again. Coldplay is the most interesting rock group ever and it is thrilling to be alive during their period of producing such quality songs and music ... just like our ancestors had the pleasure of experiencing Handel, Beethoven, Elgar, and Gershwin. I put Chris Martin in that group and he's clearly the greatest songwriter of the 2000s.

Why would Violet Hill be disqualified because of the free NMW 7 inch single, when Umbrella by MSP wasn't? Isn't it the same situation?

Radio 1 Playlist (16/04/08)
Radio 2 pays pretty close attention to their playlist; many regular listeners hate the playlist, but I like hearing new songs. They often overplay the A List songs. I'm already tired of that McManus song. And David Jordan's latest is the worst on his album; I expect it to flop on the chart. Goldfrapp and Royworld should be on the A List. Radio 2 doesn't keep songs on the list as long as Radio 1 and don't do recent recurrents. So you will hear a song every few hours for weeks and never hear it again. It's tough to hear the C List unless you look at the track listings for them and then "listen again". Janice Long often veers off the playlist into Radio 1 territory, like the Courteeners, We Are Scientists, Elbow, and MGMT. And Steve Wright sometimes plays Kanye West and others that would never make the official Radio 2 playlist.

Radio 1 Playlist (09/04/08)
Why must they play ever Foo Fighters song and for months on end? Who can possibly want to hear them? And then they drop songs by Courteeners, Elbow, and Guillemots as soon as they are released. I just don't understand their love of Foo Fighters, except for the fact they're American.

Radio 1 Playlist (02/04/08)
Jo Whiley played The Pigeon Detectives new song the other day. It sounded like their previous singles, totally unremarkable fare that is not polarizing. I guess that's why Radio 1 is so fond of them. Hopefully it will have a shorter stay on the playlist than I Found Out, which they still seem to play every day. And we have another year of Akon songs -- one after another. Isn't it time to drop Leona Lewis and OneRepublic---even though they'll continue to play Stop and Stare as a recurrent for the next year. It's true that they are removing songs more quickly from the playlist, but they seem to be playing certain ones as recurrents endlessly (just like Capital). If I didn't know better I would think that The Way I Are and Let Me Think About It are new releases because they play them constantly.

iTunes Download Chart March 2008
This is very exciting regarding The Kooks song ... fun to watch it jump up this chart. It's a perfect pop song. I love how it's less than 3 minutes long and easy to sing-along. And it's a slow burn. I'm not sure it will sell more than Estelle, but top 4 on Sunday would be great!

Retail Shops - The Physical Single
Every time I'm in the Oxford Street HMVs or Zavvi in London, the singles department seems to be one of the busiest areas. People are still buying them. Perhaps it's a strategic move to put them in the back, so people will notice and buy full length CDs. This is perhaps the same strategy for moving them throughout the store.

Sunday Chart Predictions
It's a real shame that some HMVs and Zavvis are no longer stocking singles or only in limited quantities. Singles get people into the store each week, and these people may buy more profitable items. I still prefer physical singles and hope they don't disappear. The singles section at the central London HMVs and Zavvis seem to be growing, especially for 7 inch and 12 inch vinyl singles. I was also shocked at all the vinyl albums available. Re: Midweeks -- I know they aren't in today's top 40 albums, but I'd be interested in how Brian Kennedy and Benga are doing when the top 200 is available. Thank you.

Chart commentary by gooddelta
Enjoyed reading as always. Could you explain why a song doesn't make the chart, e.g., Great DJ by The Ting Tings? I know this has been discussed throughout the forum, but many of us expected it to finally chart this week, but then it's a limited physical single release. I guess the label wants them to flop or are waiting for the next single (following an Adele and Duffy approach). Also it may be worth mentioning when a group is virtually unknown in their home country. It seems almost silly to refer to We Are Scientists as an American group when their new album has no scheduled release date in the US.

Capital FM Playlist 2008
This playlist is pure fiction. I was in London over the weekend and listened to a lot of radio and switched between Radio 1, Radio 2, and Capital. The only songs from that list I heard on Capital were Chasing Pavements and Apologize. I don't think I even heard Mercy or Sun Goes Down, but they're probably playing them. I believe I heard Toca's Miracle during Saturday night dance music. What I did hear on Capital FM were tired old overplayed songs such as Valerie, Hips Don't Lie, Hey Ya, That's The Way Love Goes. The station is completely unlistenable. I heard the same old rubbish at 1:00 in the morning. Perhaps they play those new songs on their playlist between 3 and 5 in the morning, but it's certainly not during the day and evening hours.

Sunday Chart Predictions
I can't believe Goldfrapp is not higher and those five inferior songs are still up there. What is wrong with the Great British Public? I hope A & E at least goes higher than The Feeling's disappointing comeback single. Duffy's Mercy is now at #10 on the ITunes chart. Wouldn't it be great if it shot up to the top to deny the dreadful Nickelback from being #1!
