Considering all the free face time Cheryl gets on X Factor every week and the very recent success of MJ's 'The Essential' album, I don't think it will be close at all. Cheryl will win hands down because the market for another MJ hits collection is pretty diminished right now. Big MJ fans already own the hits and the 2nd CD of "This Is It" isn't enough to convince them to buy the album, and casual MJ fans or general music fans who wanted the hits, already bought them over the last few months. It's strange Sony haven't put more on the album to entice people to buy it.
  5. Sony must be run by muppets. Do they seriously think people need another hits album? Why not just add the single to 'The essential' or 'Number Ones'? Also, they have less than 3 weeks to promote the new single, so how do they expect it to reach its potential?

She's done zero promotion.Except for a single release, a music video and a TV ad campaign - I've seen the add several times now. No promotion at all then! That's pretty much anybody ever does for a hits album isn't it?

Don't forget The Beatles released many more albums than MJ, so they have more albums to chart which gives them an advantage. Also, in the first few weeks after his death several MJ albums (e.g Bad and Dangerous) were inelligible for the chart and so even though they sold enough copies to enter the Top 10 did not appear on the chart at all until weeks later. It's a nice little earner for Macca, Ringo and MJ's estate though. It still owns 50% of the Sony/ATV catalogue who control the publishing rights to almost all their songs. With MJ's own enormous sales since June (more than 15million albums sold), the merchandise deals, the 'This Is It' cinema release, DVD release and CD release etc, the estate will have easily made more than £100million by the end of the year.

I can't believe somebody comes onto a chart forum and actually believes the Beatles sold over a billion records. It's simply not true and there is no evidence to back this figure up. It's pure marketting hype, which unfortunately has been regurgitated by the media over the years. Do the research and you'll realise it's not true. The Beatles are certainly one of the biggest selling acts in the world though along with Elvis (who also has sold nowhere near 1billion albums despite the records company's and fan's claims) and Michael Jackson. It's impossible to be certain who is the biggest selling though. All 3 acts have sold far short of the 1billion albums mark. Media often confuses 'units' sold with 'albums' sold and they are very different things. Elvis and The Beatles have so many albums it's easier for them to achieve huge sales than Michael Jackson who has relatively few albums. Similar to Beatles, Elvis, and Jackson, ABBA sales are also grossly over-hyped. The Beatles, Elvis and ABBA became the media darlings over the years and have been hyped beyond all reason. While all good acts in their own right and very influential, people should try to take what the record execs and media say with regards to sales. One other important thing to note: Michael Jackson's Thriller album has not sold 104million copies. This was misquoted from his former spokesperson. It is still by far the biggest selling album in the world though, with just over 70million confirmed sales.

Yeah, that was really bad timing and unavoidable but I'm glad the MJ has reigned at the top for so long. I don't think it will last for many more weeks though as his sales have dropped off significantly since a few weeks ago. 7 weeks at No.1 so far (1 week with 'Number Ones' followed by 6 with 'The Essential') beats John Lennon's record of having the most consecutive weeks at number one following an artist's death - Lennon had 6 weeks. I'd like to see a few more weeks so that he can have the longest run at Number 1 this decade, but that is a little unlikely I think.

Hmm, I guess I'm being a bit slow this morning because nothing has changed. Was I right or not?
  21. bobmoo79 posted a post in a topic in UK Charts
Hasn't Jackson already been at the top for 7 weeks? One week with Number Ones and 6 weeks with 'The Essential Michael Jackson'?
  22. bobmoo79 posted a post in a topic in UK Charts
I don't think that's going to happen this week as he's still at No.1 in the midweeks with 'The Essential'. This is the first time Bad has even charted in the Top10 (it previously was excluded from the main album chart, though would have been top 3 for several weeks). I don't think there's any harm in it having one week in the Top10
