  1. Deeper Love (Symphonic Paradise) charted at #19 one week after Ruff Driverz charted at the same position with a track called Deeper Love.
  2. Not quite true - this was (according to Wikipedia) the last live performance on a weekly show, on the penultimate weekly show (the final weekly show was all archive performances). There have of course been Christmas & New Year shows with live performances since then.
  3. Nadia (who reached #27 in 2004) was from Portugal.
  4. Appleton's 2nd hit was Don't Worry. Robbie Robertson' description is missing. Great stuff, though (the thread title could do with changing)!
  5. Enigma (who topped the chart in 1991) were part-Romanian.
  6. If you're including A1 and Aqua then I believe you should also include Abba (Anni-Frid Lyngstad is Norwegian). It may also be worth mentioning Marion Raven's hit with Meat Loaf in 2006. And going back to the Swedish list, you have the title of Oceanlab's first hit wrong - it is Clear Blue Water. Thanks for the lists, though!
  7. The Icelandic list appears to be missing LazyTown, who were partly Icelandic and reached #4 in 2006. Great lists, nonetheless!
  8. Flo Rida also reached #1 several weeks later.

1975 falling 15-38 on both the official chart and this one :o
  10. First person younger than me to reach #1: Zac Hanson (of Hanson) in 1997 First solo artist younger than me to reach #1: Rihanna in 2007 (Lily Allen and Leona Lewis both come close)
  11. Also, Sally Sweetland (who featured on Eddie Fisher's 1953 #1 hit I'm Walking Behind You) is apparently still alive at 104.
  12. Kay Starr (who scored the 3rd #1 hit) is still alive (aged 93) according to Wikipedia.
  13. According to Wikipedia it was Lee Newman who died in 1995.

28/10/00: The week Who Let The Dogs Out jumped from 14-2, being prevented from reaching #1 by Steps - Stomp (which was itself a somewhat unexpected #1). 1/3/03: The week that there were a lot of new entries in the lower half of the top 40 (including Mark Joseph's debut hit which was only stocked in 6 record shops), but only 4 (a low number by 2003 standards!) in the top 20, with quite a few surprise movements, including a totally random climb from 20-8 for Good Charlotte. 27/12/03: The famous Christmas chart - a close battle for #1 (with both songs selling over 220,000 - all physical sales), the record label scoring only its 2nd ever #1 hit (a full 7 days after its first #1 hit), Idols coming nowhere near #1 (albeit with a sale that would have been sufficient in most 2003 weeks) and even being beaten by Bo Selecta. 17/6/06: Unexpected flops from Sugababes and Duncan James, an array of World Cup songs entering/climbing, The Automatic reaching the top 5, and a ding-dong battle for #1 between Sandi Thom and Nelly Furtado (one of the midweek updates had the 2 songs separated by just 1 copy).
  15. Thanks for these - have updated the first post. Some of the tracks that reached #1 on re-issue (Dreamer, Professional Widow, Brimful Of Asha, Don't Call Me Baby etc) reached #1 less than a year after their first release - these may or may not have been recorded more than a year before they topped the chart. I have excluded complete re-recordings e.g. Candle In The Wind '97, Lay Me Down (which in the download era at least would be considered separate from the original recordings). I have not included Are You With Me as it is a Lost Frequencies track that samples the Easton Corbin track, as opposed to a re-mix of the Easton Corbin track.
  16. Here is a list of songs which have reached #1 despite being over a year old when they did so. Note that the song need not have charted (or even been released originally). Obviously it can be difficult to ascertain the exact age of a song (i.e. when it was recorded). Bill Haley & His Comets - Rock Around The Clock Jim Reeves - Distant Drums Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - Tears Of A Clown Tams - Hey Girl Don't Bother Me Tammy Wynette - Stand By Your Man David Bowie - Space Oddity John Lennon - Imagine Michael Jackson - One Day In Your Life Charlene - I've Never Been To Me Irene Cara - Fame Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls Jackie Wilson - Reet Petite Ben E King - Stand By Me Hollies - He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother Steve Miller Band - The Joker Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody Clash - Should I Stay Or Should I Go Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody*^ Bluebells - Young At Heart Freddie Mercury - Living On My Own $ D:Ream - Things Can Only Get Better $ Baby D - Let Me Be Your Fantasy $ Wamdue Project - King Of My Castle Sonique - It Feels So Good $ George Harrison - My Sweet Lord* Elvis Presley - A Little Less Conversation $ Michael Andrews ft Gary Jules - Mad World Peter Andre - Mysterious Girl DJ Casper - Cha Cha Slide Elvis Presley - Jailhouse Rock* Elvis Presley - One Night / I Got Stung* Elvis Presley - It's Now Or Never* Tony Christie - (Is This The Way To) Amarillo Mint Royale - Singin' In The Rain Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name PJ & Duncan - Let's Get Ready To Rhumble Icona Pop ft Charli XCX - I Love It Lilly Wood & Robin Schulz - Prayer In C OMI - Cheerleader $ Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Choir - A Bridge Over You * = song also reached #1 on original released ^ = song was a double A-side with a new song when re-issued $ = chart-topping was largely due to a 'new' remix There may be some that I am missing.
  17. Interestingly I can think of at least 5 more songs that should still be to come (from , although the one only sold in its eligible weeks), plus 2 others that (I believe) should have appeared earlier ( and ).
  18. It was a Facebook campaign by fans of Aberdeen FC.
  19. You might be confusing it with Pipes Of Peace, which reached #1 in January 1984.
  20. Unless I am very much mistaken, he also had 2 top 40 hits in 1995-96 under the name Winx.

That plus the fact there is less interest in the chart in general nowadays (due to it being slower and there being a lot more music available). Also, the period after Christmas is now the biggest sales period of the year (due to the gift-card effect), whereas pre-downloads the biggest sales period was the run-up to Christmas (and thus there was more interest).

Other songs that are considered to be Christmas songs but have no reference to Christmas in the lyrics: S Club 7 - Never Had A Dream Come True Freiheit - Keeping The Dream Alive Songs where the Christmas reference is minimal: Johnny Mathis - When A Child Is Born (an implicit reference to Jesus) Jona Lewie - Stop The Cavalry (the only Christmassy thing about it is the line 'wish I was at home for Christmas')
  23. This really needs to be an Only Connect question if it hasn't already been.
  24. A few more: Stardust (act who reached #42 in 1977 with Ariana; act who reached #2 with Music Sounds Better With You in 1998) Lobo (US singer who had 2 top 5 hits in the early 1970s; Dutch singer who reached #8 with The Caribbean Disco Show in 1981) Karen Young (UK singer who charted with Nobody's Child in 1969; US disco singer who charted with Hot Shot in 1978) Jagged Edge (UK act who had a minor hit in 1990 with You Don't Love Me; US rap act who twice hit the top 25 before featuring on Notorious BIG's #1 Nasty Girl)
  25. Another version replaces it with the second verse of I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday (not sure if it is a sample or a re-recording), which puts the recording out of sync with the video.
