The End-of-Year Number 19 Survivor Result
And the winner is...
The Kooks! Who would've thought? :o 'Naïve' was released as the fourth single from The Kook's debut album Inside In/Inside Out and gave them their highest-charting single at that point, peaking at #5. For years I didn't match the song to its title so only through this I discovered 'Naïve' was one of those indie songs that was played an awful lot back in '06. Not my preferred winner but I appreciate it is one of the less predictable champions!
In second place is DJ Sammy with his eurodance version of the 1985 Bryan Adams hit (well, a #1 hit in the US but only a #38 "hit" in the UK...). 'Heaven' was released in November 2002 in the UK but notably began charting for 6 weeks in the bottom quarter of the top 100 prior to its release date. I'm assuming this was due to imports bought by people desperately seeking the single. DJ Sammy went on to gain three more UK top 10 hits - the other well-known one being the #2 'The Boys of Summer'. It's a shame DJ Sammy didn't quite catch The Kooks but what a close final!

I remember Billionaire being unlucky not to get to #1. I think a fake version was released on iTunes beforehand and went top 10 which effectively cost the real version sales (if my memory serves me right).
Edit: On second thoughts it might have suffered from an early release. I just remember something was messy about it and they would've gone to #1 under normal circumstances.

Leona Lewis is shouting out to me. I know she mainly only had success of the back of X Factor, but she used to always do so well on iTunes but now anything released since Glassheart has slipped through the cracks.
Yeah she was declining in success since 2009 but still managed top 10 hits. That said, I think 'Fire Under My Feet' would've still missed the top 10 even if streaming wasn't introduced. :P
Usher is definitely the one that came to my mind. He bagged at least one top 10 hit per era up to 2012 but then he's disappeared.
Alicia Keys also! She had a massive era in 2010 and even 'Girl On Fire' was a big hit two years later. I like to think 'In Common' would've been a hit if music consumption stayed the same.
The Saturdays also had their biggest hit 1 year before streaming was introduced. I think their Greatest Hits single would've given them another high-charting hit if it wasn't for streaming and maybe they would've continued for another few years.

I for one loved it - his vocals were great all the way through, the showmanship was there giving me MJ vibes and the setlist was solid too although 'In Your Eyes' and 'Secrets' should've been squeezed in. :kink: Definitely one of the best Super Bowl halftime shows I've seen. As mentioned above I was hoping at some point Lana would come out for a 'Lust For Life' performance.

Finishing in bronze position is James Morrison and Nelly Furtado with their 2008 hook-up 'Broken Strings'. The single first charted in the final weeks of 2008 and by the beginning of the new year it had soared into the top 2 - prevented from bagging a first and third number one for James and Nelly respectively by none other than Lady Gaga's debut single 'Just Dance'. The song still easily became James' highest-charting single - his previous best was 2006's #5 hit 'You Give Me Something' - and became one of Nelly's biggest also. The song is a bit of a bore to be honest. I can't say I've ever chosen to listen to it through choice. I don't know what exactly made it so big besides Nelly's presence.
Now it has come down to DJ Sammy vs The Kooks - perhaps the most surprising final two so far. Vote for your favourite. :teresa:

Finishing in sixth place - and missing out on a shot to advance into the top 5 by one vote! - is the Queen of Christmas Mariah Carey with her 2005 mega-smash 'We Belong Together'. The song was released as the second single to Mariah's triumphant comeback album The Emancipation Of Mimi and reached #2, becoming her highest charting single since her 2000 Westlife collaboration 'Against All Odds'. That collaboration aside, it was Mariah's highest charting position on the UK Singles Chart in 11 years! The video stars Wentworth Miller and acts as a sequel to the 'It's Like That' visual. In the US the song became a monster hit, earning Mariah her 16th number one and staying at the summit for a massive 14 weeks. :drama: Unfortunately, its success doesn't extend to this forum. In my opinion it is one of Mariah's very best songs. The melodramatic final minute of the song is EVERYTHING.

I wouldn't bring it back until 2028 at the very earliest. It plummeted in popularity during the last few years it was on air and I doubt many people are missing it. The show doesn't work if no one is talking about it.
I'd be more interested in a Pop Idol revamp instead - British Idol? - at least the contestants on PI/AI have more creative control and there is no blatant manipulation week after week.

In fifth place is the 2006 dance smash from Dutch house DJ Fedde le Grand. 'Detroit' served as the DJ's debut single, climbing to number one in November 2006 and blocking Bodyrox from getting to the top spot with 'Yeah Yeah'. Elsewhere in the top 5 that week was Girls Aloud with 'Something Kinda Ooooh' remaining tight at #3 and Queen Bey climbing to her peak of #4 with 'Irreplaceable'. The nostalgia is real. As for the Fedde song, that can get lost in history. :kink: 'Let Me Think About It' trumps it in every way.
