This is an unusual case, very few children are found after this long. But I find worrying that the only contact Shannon has so far had with her family is a short visit from mum, seen through a glass screen. There is a lot to this story that we don't know and the police have a very difficult job ahead of them. If there is found to be a more extensive family involvement I can only imagine the backlash from the communuity that supported the family. (*at the back of my mind is a niggle that the sums of money that appeared to be poured into Madeline campaign funds have led this family to do something very stupid - but maybe I am just extremely cynical and I hope I am wrong*)

Whilst I tend to agree with some of this article it is no new issue. You just have to look at the god like status awarded film stars during the 20s / 30s / 40s in Hollywood. Kids have always wanted to be footballers / train drivers / pop stars. Although it has to be said when you keep seeing how little talent / brains are required to become a "celebrity" these days does make me wonder why I work so hard!

I don't know about you Craig, but certainly wasn't playing doctors and nurses or with dolls at 15. Media / internet / celebrities / materialism etc exposes kids to a wider world - it does not mean they are mature enough to cope with it. If kids are so worly wise why do we have such a ridiculously high teenage pregnancy rate? Why do kids still give out personal info on facebook / bebo etc and meet random people from the net? Why do 14 year old girls post semi-naked photos of themselves on myspace and wonder why dirty old men add them? Having knowledge is all very good - but having the life experience / common sense to cope in the world is a different matter. .... and this girl sadly wasn't able to cope with the situation she found herself in.

Whilst no parent deserves to lose their child so horribly, if you care for your children you care for them, protect them. This parent failed to do this. Why take your child on holiday if you don't want to spend time with them? Why was she not at school? Parents are LEGALLY responsible for the care of their children - and it is possible for 15 year olds to have freedom without being all but abandoned! Why has a 15 year old got a 25 year old boyfriend? If she hadn't been killed had she a high chance of beoming another teenage mum? When are we going to stop excusing feckless parents - when are we going to stop mopping up their mess?
