Arhh, glad someone else understands. Though I doubt they'll lose the contract, as Milward Brown are the biggest research company in the UK. They've swallowed up Gallup, BMRB & MRIB. So, there are not many others left. Next time someone stops you on the street & says "Would you like to do a survey" (before you kick them in the goolies) have a look at their paperwork. The heading will most likely say "Milward Brown Research". OCC (Official Charts Company) was just the new name taken by CIN (Chart Information Network) in the 90s.

I'm sure if you contact them. They'd not decline in giving you any info, that you'd like. Their problem is that they don't want copyrighted info nicked. It is an offence. Although I wouldn't be so sure about their computers. It's Milward Brown that has the computers & just sends their info over. Free Country? I think that ceased to be in about 1997. Have you been on Radio or TV lately? Can't do nothing or say anything, coz it might upset someone or other...

Face facts. If you want something, expect to pay for it. It's quite obvious that most content run by companies in the media, will all start charging to view their online stuff. If rubbish like The Sun can do it, then everyone else will follow. Nobody has any right to reprint charts or any other material. It's copyright protected & anyone copying, must expect a warning. If you want something, then research it yourself. We all had to do it. Go up to London. Visit the British Library. Go to the offices of Music Papers & get stuck in & don't pass stuff around for free or profit. That's when "the establishment" start getting funny. Take ChartStats. Someone (rather sillily) decided to put (what) say 44 years of "almost" accurate charts online for free, together with a load of tosh for 17 years of made up, points based charts before that, & people started to notice it. Then people started mentioning it, on forums & giving links & BANG, 75% of chart followers started using it. Oh it's great & FREE they thought. They could of used it to their advantage & copied it. Some (obviously) did. Some didn't because they became complacent. Nothing is forever. So, take advantage & get it, while you can. All you can do is thank the original guy, for doing ChartStats. Exactly the same thing happened to the Radio Luxembourg charts, recently. And they were all made up! Copyrighted material remains the owner of the person that made it, or sold it to another company, as in Milward Brown/Gallup/BMRB...All now one company, anyway. Supplying info to the overseeing OCC (who leave much to be desired in everything they do). Don't quite no why they exist. Milward Brown are the people compiling the damn charts. Perhaps they should have their own chart page on their website? Put that in writing! That chart company exist for profit alone. Like every other business, in bad financial climates. Whether they decide to put every Top 75/Top 50 on their website is entirely up to them, but anyway the Top 40 is the only bit, that really matters or counts. Exactly why the BBC, will never use more than a Top 40. The lower you get down the more out of sync it becomes, always has & open to hype.

Top 50 Best Selling Singles Of The Year
UK Top 100 Hits of 1961 In this one I challenge a certain Top 60 that was broadcasted on Radio 2 in 2010. They reckoned that the Allisons outsold both "Wooden Heart" & "Runawy". There is no way this could be. So, I guess "Runaway" was omitted from that list & there was some mix up between "Wooden Heart" & "Are You Sure". And also it would seem Helen Shapiro lost some sales, to the other Elvis hit "Surrender". Plus also, I note a point in December 61/January 62, where a certain published chart mixed up Acker Bilk with Kenny Ball. 1961-001 Elvis Presley - Are You Lonesome Tonight.mp3 2.8MB [3.05) p 710 1961-002 Del Shannon - Easter Number Ones
Every record released in the 60s was released on a Friday. No matter who it was. The big reason RR missed new entries at #1, was because it was on a Saturday - Friday poll. So, they always missed the big Saturday sales. All the other papers (NME, Melody Maker, Disc) were on Monday - Saturday (as should be) & would be the equivalent to today's charts. RR was so crap at compiling a chart, they junked their own chart to use BMRB's in 1969 & for that reason alone. The chart didn't mean a thing. Like I said, you could compare it to today's "The Big Top 40" or more likely a minor poll of small shops, where your mum & dad would go to buy Des O'Connor, Frank Ifield, Cliff Richard & Nancy Sinatra. Instead of The Beatles, Stones, The Who, or Small Faces.

Top 50 Best Selling Singles Of The Year
A much needed thread I think. The Top 50 Best Sellers of the years from 1959 to 1969. Based on a specially created sales module. Based on what we do know & let the computer do the rest. Easy to understand? I hope. I've disregarded Disc & Music Echo's Gold & Silver Disc awards for this, as they obviously do not recognise, everything that actually sold 250,000+, even though they were supposed too! Easter Number Ones
A couple of points Dan. Had you switched on Pick Of The Pops in 1964 & 1965 (on theses Easter Sundays) you'd of noticed that "Can't Buy Me Love" went straight in at #1 & Billy J. Kramer fell to #2. And in 1965, "The Minute You're Gone" never made the BBC #1, as "Ticket To Ride" went straight in at #1. I know you are using Record Retailer (in this otherwise jolly good thread) but millions of real chart fans, would agree with me, that Record Retailer counts for nothing. It was based on an average of charts from just 30 shops (most of which were in an Easy Listening enviroment). Never in it's history was Record Retailer ever taken seriously. Mainly, as it was a week behind everyone one else & on a Saturday to Friday poll. In other words, it was crap. Even more so, when you consider that most weeks, there were multipli ties, that were separated by looking at the previous week's positions. Total nonsene. The Big Top 40 of it's day.

THE BIG TOP 40
I think it does depend on choice though. Big Top 40 only makes sense from 4 to 4.30pm. Then fantasy pushes in. Mike goes for the week ahead formula of the defunct Network Chart & does (on many occasions get many new number ones, a week early). A shame the programme was shipped out to the wrong presenter, via a production team in Bristol & a mate of Scott Mills. Which made it cliquey & a carbon copy of Reggie Yates style of presenting i.e. he don't know what he's f***ing saying! Is there space for a chart, that can be ahead of the rest? I think so. Big Top 40 don't carry it off, because of different Airplay brands. By the way Smooth Radio's Airplay doesn't get included in that chart, as they don't take it. It's only the stations that take it, whose Airplay is included. As in, it might sell enough to make #11, but with little or no Airplay on the dodgy "playlists", it only makes #31. The future does lay in Internet Radio, but the time & climate are wrong, for it to take off. Lack of advertising & that that is available is being nabbed by moneygrabbing gobshite Radio, like Capital & Heart etc...All owned by Global Radio (who have just bought Smooth, which is likely to be swallowed by Gold to become Smooth Gold). Give it 10/20 years & the Internet Radio will be bigger. The Internet Chart will be the one, everyone's listening too & Big Top 40s 2.5million & Radio One's 1million, will just be a memory. In contrast slip back to 1984 & Radio One have 14million listeners, for Simon Bates Top 40. By 1985, Richard Skinner only has 11milllion. Jimmy Savile's show had 12million at that point on Radio one! Strangely both were produced by the awful Dave Price, at that point. The Network Chart nicked 3million listeners from R1, in one year. By the end of the 80s, R1 had sunk to under 10million. 1994 & worse 5million for R1. 6million for Independant Radio (with Neil Fox). Overall R1 have lost 4million listeners in 19 years, compared to Independant Radio, that have lost a smaller percentage. Makes you think really. But there is an answer Radio One, made a big mistake somewhere after 1993. Was it the sacking of everyone over 40? Probably.
-
THE BIG TOP 40
Independant Radio Airplay is totally different to the overall Airplay chart & biased beyond belief. It could never be compared. All it is based on is the 150 crap stations, that run the crap. Even more so, considering Lawson didn't get released until Saturday & on the original 4 - 6pm Big Top 40, entered at #16! Before being pushed down to #17, after 50Cent charted. It was exactly the same with Robbie Williams "Different". It made #15 on Big Top 40!

THE BIG TOP 40
The only decent point about it...which is unreflected here is the 4pm Weekly iTunes Top 10. The Big Top 40 kick off the show with it & it changes at 6pm, for the "live" itunes chart...Which isn't really live, as it doesn't feature the complete sale of Sunday. However this was the iTunes of the week top 10 at 4pm: 10 PSY 09 ONE DIRECTION 08 BRUNO MARS 07 PITBULL 06 CALVIN HARRIS 05 JAMES ARTHUR 04 RIHANNA/EKKO 03 DAVID BOWIE 02 TAYLOR SWIFT 01 Will I. Am That is the only part of the showt that has any merit. The rest is purely fiction, considering 50Cent were really #2 in the 6pm lockdown (unoticed by the daft team at Big Tit 40, due to not combining the 2 versions). The only time the whole chart makes any sense is on the Year End countdown, where they don't include any airplay & just play the iTunes Top 40 of the year. Now, if they did the iTunes Top 40 of the week, every week (without any daft airplay) it would actually make sense... Now you see, lovely Mike Robinson's chart is based on just a Sunday flush (Big Top 40 can't do it, for airplay restrictions & being stale): Sunday 13th January 2013 50 38 CAN YOU HEAR ME - WILEY 12WKS 49 48 RADIOACTIVE - IMAGINE DRAGONS 48 NE ANIMAL - CONOR MAYNARD the 20 year old, Brighton & Hove Albion supporter...yes he's the one! Top of the Pops on Thursdays, bbc 4.
Yep quite ridiculous really. Considering JS's allegations will never be proved or not proved. Reading through the Gary Glitter stuff, is also open to question, too. News Of The World set ups & various other stuff go against the so called "dangerous" p**** & the unbelievable tale of another, who can not even remember that she was 16 in 1974 & not 14, as she claimed. Plus I don't even have any inclings that any of the people arrested, will ever be charged. And poor RH. Well! Then again, even more so on the non screening of DLT. Jim Davidson's Big Break was still shown (in a double bill) on Challenge T last night. And as BBC4 is not a channell pulling in millions of viewers, I really can not see as to why they can not show DLT, or (even) the Jimmy Savile ones, in a (forgive the pun) a Graveyard slot, after midnight. Though I doubt anyting with JS in, will ever be show again, although his picture appears all over the net (somewhere) everyday.
