  1. Could the replacement be this - The Hit Machine? http://www.applausestore.com/applausestore...=1635&bid=1 It's on BBC3, presented by Greg James, being recorded on 13th May at Teddington. It "will bring together the biggest music stars and celebrity guests, plus, with live music performances from the week's hottest chart acts, this is a show you simply cannot afford to miss."
  2. I can never get my head around these types of figures. So, I'm thinking this printout of mine, may not be BMRB. It's definately not Record Business, I don't think. If we stick in those BPI figures, we get this turn around from #26 downwards to #150 (by calculation) It's probably good to note, that the so called "Best Selling Singles by Year, didn't start until 1972. The 1969/70/71 Charts Of The Year were points based only. But that doesn't affect this chart & neither 76, of course. 3. Many people (over the years) have been going on, about what is the actual top 100 of best selling singles in the 1970s, without sales, being added from re-issues in the 1980s & beyond. There was a chart printed in Music Week in 1980 (compiled by the British Market Research Bureau) but it was based on Chart Panel sales & not over the counter sales. A huge difference becomes apparent. I was looking through some of my old stuff the other day & I managed to find a printout of a list (from BMRB) that actually did use over the counter sales. Here it is (for interest with a few sales nicked from our buddy, Colin & also a re-creation of everything that sold 500,000 or more): [1] MULL OF KINTYRE/GIRLS' SCHOOL - Wings (1977) 2,050,000 [2] RIVERS OF BABYLON/BROWN GIRL IN THE RING - Cheers Andrey. But I've think this was the one: http://www.andreas-grimmig.de/seventies/ It's the April 67 to December 72, we are missing. Of course before that RTL used a specially prepared Weekend NME chart (not the one in the paper). That was June 66 - March 67 & prior to that the normal NME chart from January 1960 - May 1966. Of course, all the RTL Charts after April 67, were all blatantly made up, anyway. A touch of the Luxembourg Playlists & guesses to be ahead of the BBC. Sometimes it worked & others, it just did not. And the 40s & 50s were all Sheet Music Charts until the end of 1959. In the UK, Record Sales overtook Sheet Music Sales at the end of 1957. Hence the BBC starting their own chart in March 1958. The one everyone followed & not the lunacy of Record Retailer, as some try to say.
  6. Strangely no "Please Please Me". Astounding.
  7. Thank God I don't listen to any of those stations! And I got fed up with "My Way" after 3 years! Worse than listening to that awful Gold station.

Have you the link to Andreas Grimmig's postings, because I seem to have lost that one?

Right then Andrey. Dates go wrong somewhere. It should be 25th Aug, 1st Sept, 8th Sept, 15th Sept, 22nd Sept, 29th Sept, 6th Oct, 13th Oct & so on. RTL put it out on Tuesday evenings, to be a week ahead of something called Radio One (whatever that is)! 27 on the 13th Oct is PROCESSION - NEW ORDER 30 on the 3rd Oct (should be 6th Oct, that one) is LOVE HAS COME ROUND - DONALD BYRD 1st Sept: 25 EUROPE - JOHN FOXX, 26 PASSIONATE FRIEND - TEARDROP EXPLODES, 28 HOLLIEDAZE - HOLLIES 25th Aug Top 30 01 ANEKA 02 SOFT CELL 03 E L O 04 HUMAN LEAGUE (LOVE ACTION) 05 LOBO 06 GARY NUMAN 07 HOOKED ON CLASSICS 08 SHAKIN STEVENS 09 UB40 10 GENESIS 11 ROLLING STONES 12 DURAN DURAN 13 TENPOLE TUDOR 14 TIGHT FIT 15 ULTRAVOX 16 CLIFF RICHARD 17 NOLANS 18 RANDY CRAWFORD 19 MODERN ROMANCE 20 STEVE WONDER 21 KIM WILDE 22 GIDEA PARK (BEACH BOY GOLD) 23 BILL WYMAN 24 STARTRAX DISCO 25 U2 (GLORIA) 26 DOLLAR 27 BUCKS FIZZ 28 HI GLOSS 29 O M D (SOUVENIR) 30 POINTER SISTERS (SLOW HAND) Hope that helps! Have you got these all together in a file or something? If so could have you got the 1967 to 1980 run of charts too?
  10. Can't say i'd be celebrating this, because the fact is, it ain't really the 60th anniversary of the chart. What we've really got is, that it's 60 years that NME first did a Record chart. Points are: Nobody took any notice of NME charts, until Radio Luxembourg used them from 1960 to 1966. The Sheet Music Chart was more popular until 1958. Then, you've got these damn books trying to pass Record Retailer, as being "Official" from 1960 to 1969. Utter nonsense. Nobody ever touched this. Way behind all other music papers & full of hidden ties (including #1s). There are only 2 things, that should of been celebrated. The BBC chart was 50 years old on 29th March 2008. Nobody covered that great day. The chart (to this day) has never been published, although it was the most popular & listened to chart of the time. And the other celebration was the very first sales based chart, compiled by the British Market Research Bureau, which would of been 40 years old on 11th February 2009. Everyone knows (of course) that all music papers in the 50s & 60s did was collect a number of charts from relatuvely small record shops & then just add them all together. No sales info, there whatsoever. NME only polled 25 shops to start with (inconclusive of any real chart positions) Record Mirror did the biggest poll of 50 shops (between 1955 & 1960) Melody Maker covered well over 200 shops (from July 1960 onwards) Record Retailer (not even worth a mention, as it only covered 30 shops for much of the 60s & relegated EPs to a poor separate chart) Disc & Music Echo only started to separate LPs from the chart, when they started to sell in decent weekly proportions (April 1966) The BBC compiled their own charts from all the others published, which covered some 500 shops & so has to be the most correct, followed by EMI (who did similar) Anyone that prints the BBC charts, that show proper #1s like "Please Please Me", "Nineteenth Nervous Breakdown", " Sha La La La La Lee", "A Picture Of You", "Bird Dog" at #1 & not "I Pretend", "On The Rebound", "Mack The Knife", "The Wayward Wind", "Fire", & "Legend Of Xanadu"...which just never got to #1, will get a big vote from all of us, that lived & enjoyed life in the 50s & 60s with the correct charts of the time & not some nonsense, that was never seen. That's the truth on UK charts. Other statistics show that WHSmiths did not participate in compilation until March 1971 & Woolworths (the biggest seller of UK records) did not paticipate, until 8th July 1975. Then you've got BMRB throwing records out of the chart, if they slipped down, 2 weeks running & had sales falls. Plus, changing chart compilation days i.e. from May - October 1976, the days were switched from Mon to Sat, to Sat to Fri. This happened again in the early part of 1982 & cost BMRB the licence to supply the BBC with charts. Then (& only then) did the chart become really "Official" because Gallup increased shops polled to over 1000 & the whole thing became computer generated.

Easy Andrey. 28 is John Denver & Placido Domingo "Perhaps Love"
  12. There ain't. And in any case, as there are no Albums in the chart, from before 1967, it's hardly 1956 to 2012. LPs never sold as well as singles in the 50s & 60s, anyway. To expensive, for one. I believe the biggest albums (in those days) were the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra, Lonnie Donegan, the Beach Boys & all those Soundtrack LPs i.e. Carousel, The King & I, South Pacific & The Sound Of Music. Only the first 7 (named there) are worth a mention.
  13. I think my main point here (without everything being twisted about) is like Robbie said before. The Top 40 Singles has become a niche in the lack of variation it throws up, which can be attributed by the type & age of the buyers. For instance, in those days of 30% missed shops etc, there was a big range of age groups buying top 30 singles. It's a sign of the times today, yes. The Album Chart on the other hand, has yet to be effected by it. I wait with anticipation to see our brilliant Eurovision entry, enter the top 3 on the Singles chart...It may do well in the Contest, but will it, be a big big hit? Not likely. Yeah, the charts tell me that Miss Average 22 year old, likes Adele. But it doesn't tell me, what Mr 45 year old, or Mrs 53 year old would buy. I look back to a day in 1968 & it tells me that, Miss Average 22 year old, would be likely to buy The Beatles or The Monkees. Mr 45 year old is a Rolling Stones fan, while Mrs 53 year old is likely to be buying Cliff Richard & Des O' Connor. If I want to find that out today, I have to take in the album chart, because it's a better reflection. I'm a big Iron Maiden, Cliff, Bowie, Noel Gallagher, & Paul Weller fan & want to see that reflected on Radio. So, when's the complete Album Countdown going to be broadcast? The truth is, is it never will be, because there is no Radio Station catering for everybody's taste in music. Both the BBC & Independant Radio have much to answer for.
  14. With 45s, it was quite easily spotted because BMRB could easily see, it was happening. A team of people were paid (by another) to go to various shops & buy the same record. A record may not have been spotted straight away, but it would have been thrown out on the 2nd week, without doubt. This was notorious in the 70s (mainly with Melody Maker). With a TV show made to document it. Anyway, what's to stop people, buying from 5 or 6 different download sites?
  15. But that was easily spotted. Anyway I don't know about iTunes, but I've bought the same things, more than once on Amazon, loads of times, because you tend to lose them, if you change PCs etc.
  16. Multipli accounts? Using their mates? Who knows? But it sure gets on my tits! All then (maybe) most females of that ilk, are just influenced by their mates or crappy tv, that they have no mind of their own. They are hypnotised by what people tell 'em. It other words...Gullible.
  17. But it doesn't answer the question, as to why 5/6 months in it's still be purchased (by likely the same people that already bought it previously). It's like multi-purchasing of the same thing & it really is what the "Tracks Chart" is. It's open to hype on a long term scale. Not really a reflection of the "real" general pubic (abeit your dappy female in the 18 - 30 group i.e. your Heart listener). It's the ones that have a short attention span, that of a moth! It's not really democracy. More like a niche market of the same person(s). It's like only the Conservatives turning up, at the Election...You get the same result, over & over!
  18. The thing that really grates on me, is surely everyone that wanted to buy anything by Adele (God forbid!), such as "Set Fire To Her Brain" has already purchased it by now...So, why do these inferior talent type shows, make people download the damn thing again & again & again? Are they so, mindnumbling boring (like Independant Radio seem to think)?
  19. Thanks Robbie! And I do agree about the Big Top 40. It's a silly gimmick, that doesn't work to the point of (the so called up to date chart at 6pm). It's not up to date, because it's just how iTunes looks at 6pm. Then, anyone can look at iTunes at 6pm & get the same result. It doesn't mean anything, because by 7pm, it's change again. The way airplay is used in the 11 to 40 is quite ridiculous & just reflects, what stagnant producers decide to playlist on Heart or Capital (otherwise known as Global Radio). Mike's Ultimate UK Chart does it better, because you get a full 16 hour sweep plus a small physical element. He adds airplay from Jason Scott's Internet stations (though just climbers & new entries). The result is a pretty much midweek chart on a Sunday. And it is a better chart show (even if I do say so, myself!). I mean if you listen to Radio One, you can guess what's coming next. With Mike's effort, you're pushed to even guess, what's even going to be #1. With Radio One giving midweek information, you'll never gonna have a "Fresh" sound on a Sunday. Perhaps, Radio One should just do a Wednesday Midweek Chart & forget the rest of the week, coz that's as Fresh as they get & with Big Top 40's 2.5 million listeners to Radio One's 900,000...there is definately something a miss here...whatever anyone says.

Mainly, because it's pretty much the same, as the one Mike broadcasted last Sunday on "The Ultimate UK Chart". You can hear that across the net, every Sunday (of course) on great Internet Stations & RSLs, such as ABCbroadcasting.co.uk & Chase FM. I've got 3 shows. The Classic Retro Countdown plays those original charts of the 50s to the 80s, every Sunday at 2pm with Richard Todd on AtlanticOldies2NG & there's the new show, starting on Saturday 7th April at 3pm "Call Me Number One", where we'll be plaing out Worldwide number one hits, from the 40s to the 2000s...Don't miss that one, & if you end up in Hospital, you can catch me (personally) with the "Double Countdown Show" with those Top Tens (& Records outside the top 10s) from 1960 to 1987, every Sunday at 12pm. That's that for this Chart...never to be seen again! 4 years after MRIB finished the Singles chart. These days I (personally) think the charts, need a good kicking (as they are just shite) & out of date, before they even hit the air of Radio One. Goodness knows, why they even bother with a chart show! The truth is, everyone knows what's going to happen & you still get these dumbos, texting in to idiots (like Yates) as to what might be Number One (when it's a bloody foregone conclusion!!). The real reason that they've lost some 3 million listeners in 10 years. I leave you with a selection of hilariously worded signs, from around the World: (These are all real signs that exist) From: HELEN BENTLEY In a Bangkok Temple: IT IS FORBIDDEN TO ENTER A WOMAN, EVEN A FOREIGNER, IF DRESSED AS A MAN. Cocktail lounge, Norway: LADIES ARE REQUESTED NOT TO HAVE CHILDREN IN THE BAR. Doctor's office, Rome: SPECIALIST IN WOMEN AND OTHER DISEASES. A Laundry in Rome: LADIES, LEAVE YOUR CLOTHES HERE AND THEN SPEND THE AFTERNOON HAVING A GOOD TIME. And finally the all time classic Seen in an Abu Dhabi Souk shop window: IF THE FRONT IS CLOSED PLEASE ENTER THROUGH MY BACKSIDE… …. Priceless!
  21. I can confirm that the Dooleys, did infact have 2 weeks at #60 & 4wks in the top 75. It's the published books that are wrong (as usual). I've got the top 75 from Record Mirror for 1978.
  22. Now, most people know that after April 2006. more & more tracks, began to enter the charts on download alone & it became possible to have 4 Singles charts. That is, the main combined Download/Physical chart, the Download Only chart, the Physical Only chart, & the other one, where Singles were only noted on download if they had a physical available i.e. the Chart without downloads alone. I've noted down the "Without Downloads Alone" #1s on the MRIB #1 list. So, what about those Physical Number Ones, then? Here they are from April 2006 onwards: 2nd Apr 06 YOU KILLED ME - MORRISEY not a combined #1 9th Apr 06 CRAZY - GNARLS BARKLEY Note: On the 30th April 2006 "The View From The Afternoon" the title track from an E.P. by the Arctic Monkeys should of topped the Physical chart, & indeed appeared in the ordinary chart at #4. Unfortunately, it was a 5 track E.P. & the powers that be, do not allow that many tracks for an E.P. to count as a single. So, it was disqualified from the chart...Rather stupid I thought, but then who am I? 4th Jun 06 I WISH I WAS A PUNK ROCKER - SANDI THOM 25th Jun 06 SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE - MUSE not a combined #1 2nd Jul 06 HIPS DON'T LIE - SHAKIRA/WYCLEF JEAN 9th Jul 06 SMILE - LILY ALLEN 23rd Jul 06 PLEASE PLEASE/DON'T STOP ME NOW - MCFLY 30th Jul 06 HIPS DON'T LIE - SHAKIRA/WYCLEF JEAN 6th Aug 06 STARS ARE BLIND - PARIS HILTON not a combined #1 13th Aug 06 HIPS DON'T LIE - SHAKIRA/WYCLEF JEAN 20th Aug 06 LEAVE BEFORE THE LIGHTS COME ON - ARCTIC MONKEYS not a combined #1 27th Aug 06 DEJA VOUS - BEYONCE/JAY Z 3rd Sept 06 SEXY BACK - JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE 10th Sept 06 DON'T FEEL LIKE DANCIN' - SCISSOR SISTERS 8th Oct 06 COME TO ME - P. 24. The Almost Saturday charts are a Mike Robinson production, based on an average from 5 download sites, iTunes sales & the odd physical from HMV. A couple of weeks of this to go, then. Some said we went wrong last week. Did we? No. The iTunes Top 10 of the entire week (last Sunday) finished like this: (with the Almost Saturday position in brackets (at the end) plus the average & physical final position. The final outcome, depends on how track(s) are lumped together (or not). (For us) E.P. versions can not be called tracks. So, separate bundles (as E.P.s) are not included. Well, you wouldn't put an L.P. in the tracks chart, would you? 10 NE Marcus Collins (8) plus average & physicals 09 11 David Guetta/Nicki Minaj (10) plus average 08 07 David Guetta/Sia (9) plus average 07 NE StooShe/Travie McCoy (6) plus average 06 06 DJ Fresh/Rita Ora (7) plus average & 12 inch 05 NE Tinchy Stryder/Pixie Lott (5) plus average 04 05 Flo Rida/Sia (4) plus average 03 03 Emeli Sande (2) plus average 02 04 Nicki Minaj (3) plus average 01 01 Gotye/Kimbra (1) plus average On to today (& if you put your money on Synchronised in the Cheltenham Gold Cup & not the over-priced favourite (or the knackered Kauto Star)...Well done!
