  3. The Almost Saturday Charts are a Mike Robinson Production, based on average downloads from 5 sites, & iTunes sales plus a tad of physical from HMV. Just ahead of today's charts: There we were the other day, screaming at the way Guiness books & others, have falsely put it about that the charts, that they chose for 50s & 60s to be "Official" back in the day, when they most certainly were not! We came to the conclusion that the best way to start from something "Official" would be to only use the word from 11th Feb 1969. Which is only correct & right. So, how to achieve a more correct chart from before that period? It can be done, we think & that is something we plan for a future post/& or publication. Mainly because, we get fed up of people telling us that these flipping records were number one, & were not! These are the records from the 50s & 60s period, that were not definately not bonafide #1s: UNCHAINED MELODY - JIMMY YOUNG HERNANDO'S HIDEAWAY - JOHNSTON BROTHERS (The biggest calamity of the 50s, & really a struggle for a top 3 place) ROCK N' ROLL WALTZ - KAY STARR SINGING THE BLUES - TOMMY STEELE ROCK-A-BILLY - GUY MITCHELL ON THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE - VIC DAMONE IT'S ALL IN THE GAME - TOMMY EDWARDS THE DAY THE RAIN'S CAME - JANE MORGAN MACK THE KNIFE - BOBBY DARIN THREE STEPS TO HEAVEN - EDDIE COCHRAN SHAKIN' ALL OVER - JOHNNY KIDD I LOVE YOU - CLIFF RICHARD SAILOR - PETULA CLARK ON THE REBOUND - FLOYD KRAMER (This one being the biggest sample mistake & likely never even made the top 3) REACH FOR THE STARS - SHIRLEY BASSEY KON TIKI - THE SHADOWS THE WAYWARD WIND - FRANK IFIELD DEVIL IN DISGUISE - ELVIS PRESLEY DIANE - THE BACHELORS IT'S ALL OVER NOW - ROLLING STONES LITTLE RED ROOSTER - ROLLING STONES THE MINUTE YOU'RE GONE - CLIFF RICHARD KING OF THE ROAD - ROGER MILLER THE LEGEND OF XANADU - DAVE DEE, DOZY, BEAKY, MICK, & TICH I PRETEND - DES O' CONNOR FIRE - THE CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN BLACKBERRY WAY - THE MOVE All those (except the 2 mentioned) really only went as high, as #2. There are some obvious reasons for it. Both NME & Record Retailer were midweek cut offs & so, became behind other charts, that went Mon to Sat (such as Melody Maker & Disc). Though we do stress, that no charts from the 1952 to 1969 period, was actually based on sales. Every single chart, from what ever Music Publication, was based on a mean average of stores charts, across the Britain. Those were 27 that were not really #1s...but it doesn't stop there, for these 13 are ignored for hitting the top (when they most certainly did): UNCHAINED MELODY - AL HIBBLER MA, HE'S MAKING EYES AT ME - JOHNNY OTIS SHOW BIRD DOG - EVERLY BROTHERS ARE YOU SURE - THE ALLISONS TAKE GOOD CARE OF MY BABY - BOBBY VEE STRANGER ON THE SHORE - MR ACKER BILK MARCH OF THE SIAMESE CHILDREN - KENNY BALL A PICTURE OF YOU - JOE BROWN PLEASE PLEASE ME - THE BEATLES DO YOU WANT TO KNOW A SECRET - BILLY J. 6. Well Steve mate, the first proper sales based chart was launched on Tuesday 11th February 1969 & was compiled by the British Market Research Bureau funded by the BBC. What will be 60 years old this year is the NME chart & the first chart to be based on Records, rather than sheet music. The actual BBC Charts will be 54 years old on 30th March 2012. The actual "Offical" named chart will be 43 on 11th Feb. That's how it really pans out. Like we've said before, it's just that the people behind Guiness Books, that decided to use NME & Record Retailer charts because they were the charts with the most positions i.e. top 30s & top 50s. Though, no charts were ever correct below 30 anyway, due to the hyping of records at the time. Guiness Books (or whoever prints those books today) have not got the rights to print the NME charts in full by the way. Though they choose to refer to them for the 1950s. In actual fact, the NME is pretty out for 50s charts, just like Record Retailer is for the 60s. The Record Retailer was the most easy chart to hype, with it's 30 shop poll & just to prove it, in 1962, Brian Epstein got some people to go out to those 30 shops & buy "Love Me Do". This hyped the record into the top 20 at 17. In no other chart, did it even get that high. Amazingly, this showed when they failed to show "Please Please Me" at #1 in February 1963, when really it made the top for at least 2 weeks, unfortunately Record Retailer's 30 shop "easy listening" poll had Frank Ifield ahead of it, which was a definate no no. "Please Please Me" did really top the Record Retailer chart in a tie, but they never used ties, because there were some many of them in their chart, & the week's tie was seperated by going by the record which was higher, on the previous week. All of Record Retailer's charts are behind all the others of the day, because of their cut off periods & publishing days. Record Retailer was not seen by anyone in the 60s & the High Street shops all displayed the Melody Maker top 30. Where as in the 50s, they preferred to show "Record Mirror". To break any hyping, the BBC compiled their own top 20s/30s until that first sales chart on 11th Feb 69. The 31 to 50 part was still open to hype & that is why to this day, the BBC never mention anything outside the top 40. Of course, Radio One extended to a top 40 in May 1978, when British Market Research Bureau increased to a top 75. The early 1969 charts are still not that accurate, due to small sales returns. The chart panel was supposed to collect up to 300 stores sales, but were rather lower at 150. The Radio Chart was still under question until around early 1971, when it was more excepted by the media, but all the daily newspapers still preferred Melody Maker's chart up to the early 80s. You can't actually say that the R1 chart is actually nearly 100% until 1983, when Gallup collated data from over 1000 outlets. 150 to 300 was still a measily amount.
  7. No charts in the 50s & 60s were based on sales. Whether it were RR, Melody Maker, NME, or whatever. All the papers did was collect various top 50s from shops & add them together, for though own average Top 20/30/50. The BBC just then, took them all & added them together for the a more accurate Top 30. Record Retailer just took 30 different charts from mainly Woolworths & WHSmiths & added them together, hence only half the story & separated tied positions. The worst of all point is the incomprehensible fact, that both those shops would only appeal to the older person, hence the teenage fan being handed a chart that had such things as Frank Ifield ahead of the Beatles & Nancy Sinatra ahead of the Stones, & worst of all Des O' Connor at the top! Anyway this re-writing Official History bit is nonsense, as you take your choice & many, many other books are available apart from Guiness, that do not use Record Retailer charts. There were no proper charts until Feb 11th 1969 in Britain & even those were not widely accepted until 1971.
  8. I wouldn't go so far as saying that, they were ever close. A mess, yes & about as good as that show on Independant Radio i.e. Big Top 40! The most accurate chart has to always be, the one broadcasted by the mighty BBC & the one that we paid for with our licence fee.
  9. The Almost Saturday Charts are a Mike Robinson Production based on 5 download sites, actual iTunes sales & the odd physical from HMV. Just before this week's charts...Let us step back, because it's exactly 50 years (or was on 7th January) that the Charts have been broadcasted by some outfit called the BBC on a Sunday. So, how did that first Sunday show pan out? Well it was introduced by Alan Freeman (as Pick Of The Pops) & produced by Denys Jones. The show lasted for 1 hour & kicked off with those new entries, the new releases, the LP spot, & finally the top 10. This was the running order: Top 20 newcomers JAMES DARREN 20 G-CLEFS 15 BOBBY VEE 14 DOROTHY PROVINE 17 New Releases COME RUNNING - MARTY WILDE THE YOUNG ONES - CLIFF RICHARD & THE SHADOWS HE'S OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW BETTER - THE CRICKETS FORGET ME NOT - EDEN KANE YOU'RE FOLLOWING ME - JIMMY BREEDLOVE CRYING IN THE RAIN - EVERLY BROTHERS MR MUSIC MAN - JIMMY JONES LP Spot DANCING IN THE DARK - TONY BENNETT The top 10 singles followed, but this was the BBC top 20 that week: 20 NE GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD - JAMES DARREN 20 RE YOU'RE THE ONLY GOOD THING (THAT'S HAPPENED TO ME) - JIM REEVES 19 13 WALKIN' BACK TO HAPPINESS - HELEN SHAPIRO 17 RE I CRIED FOR YOU - RICKY STEVENS 17 NE DON'T BRING LULU - DOROTHY PROVINE 16 17 SON, THIS IS SHE - JOHN LEYTON 15 NE I UNDERSTAND - THE G-CLEFS 14 NE RUN TO HIM - BOBBY VEE 13 09 MY FRIEND THE SEA - PETULA CLARK 12 07 TAKE GOOD CARE OF MY BABY - BOBBY VEE 11 10 TOY BALLOONS - RUSS CONWAY 10 14 MULTIPLICATION - BOBBY DARIN 09 08 SO LONG BABY - DEL SHANNON 08 10 I'D NEVER FIND ANOTHER YOU - BILLY FURY 07 12 HAPPY BIRTHDAY SWEET SIXTEEN - NEIL SEDAKA 06 06 MIDNIGHT IN MOSCOW - KENNY BALL 05 03 TOWER OF STRENGTH - FRANKIE VAUGAN 04 04 JOHNNY WILL - PAT BOONE 03 05 LET THERE BE DRUMS - SANDY NELSON 02 01 MOON RIVER - DANNY WILLIAMS 01 02 STRANGER ON THE SHORE - MR ACKER BILK That's about as perfect as we could be in 1962. No recognised Official type charts & never believe that a so called "Record Retailer" chart was official because it wasn't. Half the time (the chart that Guiness uses for 1960s charts) is so, so wrong it's quite breath taking. Record Retailer polled just 30 shops & then ended up with millions of ties in it's charts. Then, they proceeded to separate ties, depending on what was higher on the previous week. Many people never realise that Record Retailer actually had many unlisted joint number ones (that you'd never know about) including the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Acker Bilk, Everly Brothers & many more. In 1962, they got even more ridiculous, when they mixed up Acker Bilk with Kenny Ball & another time in 1966, when Nancy Sinatra was confused with the Small Faces, can you believe?! So, I urge all of you, always take Guiness & Record Retailer with a pinch of salt (or even better, throw them in the bin)! Back up to date. Gaga & Prof. Green are in danger of falling out, to be replaced by at least Skrillex & that's how it stands.

  11. The Almost Saturday Charts are a Mike Robinson Production, based on an average of 5 download sites, actual iTunes sales, & the odd physical from HMV. Just before the thread proper. Last week (you may remember) Mike gave us some stuff from 1980/81, when appearently John Lennon unofficially went to #1 with "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)". Well, both Mike & I were bombarded by emails & calls on the subject. Many people claiming that it probably didn't actually go to #1 really. As you saw, Mike's sales bit was very very close, & a couple of people sent us other charts to compare too. So, did it go to the top or not? The NME & Melody Maker suggest not. These were the NME Charts compared to Melody Maker on that w/k ending 3rd Jan 1981: NME MM 01 01 STARTING OVER - JOHN LENNON 02 02 STOP THE CAVALRY - JONA LEWIE 03 03 GRANDMA - ST WINIFRED'S SCHOOL CHOIR 04 04 HAPPY XMAS (WAR IS OVER) - JOHN LENNON 05 07 IMAGINE - JOHN LENNON 06 08 ANT MUSIC - ADAM AND THE ANTS 07 05 DE DO DO DO DE DA DA DA - THE POLICE 08 06 SUPER TROUPER - ABBA 09 09 EMBARRASMENT - MADNESS 10 10 RUNAWAY BOYS - STRAY CATS 11 15 RABBIT - CHAS AND DAVE 12 14 FLASH - QUEEN 13 11 BANANA REPUBLIC - BOOMTOWN RATS 14 12 LIES/DON'T DRIVE MY CAR - STATUS QUO 15 16 TO CUT A LONG STORY SHORT - SPANDAU BALLET 16 17 LOVE ON THE ROCKS - NEIL DIAMOND 17 27 THIS WRECKAGE - GARY NUMAN 18 13 LADY - KENNY ROGERS 19 18 OVER THE RAINBOW-YOU BELONG TO ME - MATCHBOX 20 19 NEVER MIND THE PRESENTS - BARRON KNIGHTS 21 22 LONELY TOGETHER - BARRY MANILOW 22 26 DO NOTHING/MAGGIE'S FARM - THE SPECIALS 23 24 TOO NICE TO TALK TO - THE BEAT 24 20 DO YOU FEEL MY LOVE - EDDY GRANT 25 25 CELEBRATION - KOOL AND THE GANG 26 21 THE TIDE IS HIGH - BLONDIE 27 --- MY GIRL - ROD STEWART 28 30 DECEMBER WILL BE MAGIC AGAIN - KATE BUSH 29 29 IT'S HARD TO BE HUMBLE - MAC DAVIS 30 --- DON'T WALK AWAY - ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA --- 23 EARTH DIES SCREAMING/DREAM A LIE - UB40 --- 28 LOOKING FOR CLUES - ROBERT PALMER Now looking at those, it suggests that Lennon probably returned to the top with "Starting Over". Could be that sales of Lennon were badly mixed up in that drunken New Year of 80/81! Noteably in NME & MM, on the w/k ending 10th Jan 1981, "Happy Xmas (War Is Over) actually went down to #6, & rose back up to #3 on 17th Jan. Meanwhile, Radio One announced "Happy Xmas" up to #2 on 10th Jan. Going down the lines of other Professionals from 1980/81, I'm inclined to believe that it was so, tight that "Starting Over" & "Grandma" probably did really stay in the top 2, but did "Happy Xmas" fall? Maybe. "Stop The Cavalry" had been closely in that top 3, all over the period. Infact, take away Lennon's death & Radio One would have announced the following top 10s, through January 1981: The Christmas 1980 chart would have been: 01 GRANDMA 02 STOP THE CAVALRY 03 SUPER TROUPER 04 DE DO DO DO DE DA DA DA 05 ANTMUSIC 06 EMBARRASSMENT 07 RUNAWAY BOYS 08 BANANA REPUBLIC 09 LIES/DON'T DRIVE MY CAR 10 RABBIT 10th Jan 1981 01 STOP THE CAVALRY 02 ANTMUSIC 03 GRANDMA 04 DE DO DO DO DE DA DA DA 05 SUPER TROUPER 06 EMBARRASSMENT 07 FLASH 08 RABBIT 09 RUNAWAY BOYS 10 BANANA REPUBLIC 17th Jan 1981 01 ANTMUSIC 02 DO NOTHING/MAGGIE'S FARM 03 STOP THE CAVALRY 04 TOO NICE TO TALK TO 05 RABBIT 06 DE DO DO DO DE DA DA DA 07 FLASH 08 LIES/DON'T DRIVE MY CAR 09 WHO'S GONNA ROCK YOU 10 EMBARRASMENT 24th Jan 1981 01 ANTMUSIC 02 IN THE AIR TONIGHT 03 DO NOTHING/MAGGIE'S FARM 04 I AM THE BEAT 05 DON'T STOP THE MUSIC 06 FLASH 07 YOUNG PARISIANS 08 I AIN'T GONNA STAND FOR IT 09 RUNAROUND SUE 10 RAPTURE 31st Jan 1981 01 IN THE AIR TONIGHT 02 ANTMUSIC 03 RAPTURE 04 VIENNA 05 DON'T STOP THE MUSIC 06 I AM THE BEAT 07 YOUNG PARISIANS 08 I AIN'T GONNA STAND FOR IT 09 DO NOTHING/MAGGIE'S FARM 10 FADE TO GREY So, we find without JL's death Stop The Cavalry, Antmusic, & In The Air Tonight would have been #1s, & later Vienna, & Kings Of The Wild Frontier would of also topped the charts. Most of all, it wasn't Joe Dolce preventing Ultravox because they'd of had a week there, anyway! Let's get up todate. Those Woolworths sales keeping "Grandma" in the top 3, without them they only made #3 & John would of knock his self off the top, more than once through Dec & Jan...Oh yeah & Jona Lewie would have taken top spot, on the 29th Dec to 3rd Jan period, had John survived. Yep, things would have been certainly different. Credit to Mike, who took the MRIB figures & translated them to Woolworths missed sales. 17. Neither site appears to have Pop Weekly: A music mag that ran between 1962 & 1966. The author of the site has also made errors in the Top Of The Pops chart i.e. the Rolling Stones first TOTP #1 was "The Last Time" & not "Little Red Rooster", which got stuck at #2 along with "It's All Over Now". This was where the Stones used to go wrong: They always released their singles, at exactly the same time as the Beatles. All the Beatles singles entered the chart at #1 in 1964 preventing the Stones. They corrected the feat in 1965 & released on different weeks.
  18. No Steve. Mike's already included them. He took all the physicals from MRIB, then added in the downloads from the last 5 years from Milward Brown.
  19. I asked Mike to take it back to the start i.e. 1987 & 1994 & the totals are what he come up with. So, didn't bother AJ.
  20. I believe the reason that Jason Donovan is missing the Sunday 31st Dec week, when MRIB always missed the last chart of the year, as their offices always shut. Elsewhere, Jason is quoted as 250. So, I would say you're right. :D I've sorted out David Essex now, & it should be 205.
  21. Correct! Although they did not sample Woolworths, it wasn't such a bad thing (on some points). For instance: It was only the Woolworths tally that pushed St Winifred's School Choir to the #1 spot & previously in 1978, the same went for Brian & Michael's "Matchstick Men & Matchstalk Cats & Dogs"...with that other St Winifred's connection. Mike can only take figures up to 2008, because mrib no longer exist. The other figures have been culled from OCC comps.

  23. There's a lot more to spend money on, that you don't really need in 2011! 1965, I was in my 20s. No Telephone (not really needed). If you wanted to watch TV, then you went to the neighbours house. Most people had a Radiogram. As Radio was a must. If only to listen to Family Favourites, Pick Of The Pops, & The Clitheroe Kid! But those figures given are no bases for today. You could buy a house for a couple of thousand in 1965. It would take about 10 years to buy it, so it's not much different than today. A house in the South East today...say £180,000 for a terrace & it takes nearly 20 years to pay for it. No, we were better off in 1965. Crime was low & the country wasn't grossly overpopulated. On the whole people had more manners. There was no "I want, I want, I want", because you couldn't have it anyway! If you did have a TV, it wasn't over run with bad soap operas, all running the same storylines. You could actually have a good laugh, because people were not afraid of upsetting others, & censorship was rather limited. Give me 1965, any day & yes Harold Wilson, as Prime Minister. Yep, you saved your shillings for the gas meter & if you had electricity in your house, then you were lucky! The record buying public were not that hard up, because you had the #1 single selling at 200,000 a week, not just at Christmas. So, that's nonsense to start with. Though possibly, because everyone was definately not waisting money on things that, they simply did not need i.e. the high waste of cost of Mobile Phones...quite easily the biggest unneeded high cost thing ever invented today.
  24. The Almost Saturday Chart is a Mike Robinson Production, based on an average of download sites, iTunes sales & Physical sales. Quick Christmas Cracker joke here:  How do monkeys make toast? Put the bread under the Gorilla, of course! It would be nice to have a monkey for Christmas, but this year we're having turkey again! :puke2: I don't get this one: Driving instructor & female learner. Instructor says' "The lights are green". Female learner replies "Frog?" Totally threw me that one. A big drop in sales will follow next week & it will struggle to do 700,000. It'll drop further & will not make 800,000 in total all told. Sounds about right. A pretty bad Christmas sales period (without Military Wives) & Little Mix won't get more than 122,000. Next week's album chart will see Michael Buble struggle to hold a top 10 place & Adele will return to #1, says Mike. Really??
  25. Isn't it because it was not eligible for the Radio One top 40, for it's first few weeks? So, those sales will be missed out. According to my old mate Mike Robinson, it's only sold 325,000 not 345,000. So, who knows!
