The Almost Saturday Charts w/k ending 30th Apr 2010
You won`t find one! HMV do a pre-order album chart on their site. The pre-order singles are totally based on the physical format, I haven`t found a way to get pre-order download tracks yet. As the physical format is dying rapidly...we are likely to lose both pre-order singles & the physical chart altogether.

Now the question that people are asking is...Will Usher get ahead of Diana, by Sunday? Not likely...though some programme called Big Top 40, a circus in it`s own right, might have it that way! DON`T FORGET...If you can recieve Eins Festival at 19.2 East on Satellite, there are 9 editions of Top Of The Pops on offer tonight in a selection from 1970-76 between the hours of 11pm & 5am. And Double Don`t Forget the Fresh Hit40UK will be on http://thesupertstation.info & Heart FM Spain on Sunday at 4pm...Take note of that, because if you are a listener, The Superstation will closing down in the near future...So you will have to switch to Heart FM Spain in order to listen. More new entries per hour, and the complete top 40 followed by the Ones To Watch from 7-8pm...You can`t go wrong!

Big Top 40 Top 10 Prediction Game
There is simply no way, that they would not include airplay. I asked it before. Half of records not on Independant Radio`s Playlists never get played on the big top 40, in any case. As their playlists are so damn limited, there is no chance. Every Independant Radio Chart, has always featured airplay. It`s just that in the days of the Network Chart (for instance) the stations had a more varied playlist. Songs wouldn`t chart twice, like you say...because they`d just be missed out, with the ones below moving up places to avoid it. You`d never get the same song played twice in the Lockdown Top Ten, coz that`s the way it`s done. Unfortunately their playlists are crap. If you want wall to wall music, join http://www.thesuperstation.info at 4pm on Sundays, you will then hear the complete top 40 & that`s a little bit ahead of the game anyway.

Well never mind! At least it finished coming 6th. As the winner was Don`t Push It, which was clearly strange when you consider in the space of 20 minutes it went from 66-1 to 33-1 to 20-1 to 12-1 to 10-1favourite....I would say that there is something funny. I think one of those pay for phoneline bets, happened here. Set out to win, it happens in at least one race a week, if you follow racing & spend most of the week in the Bookies, like me! :teresa:

Did we blame Tommy Vance on the Top 40, although he was making like a million mistakes every Sunday! Or were you tuning in to Richard Allinson and the UK Top 30 on Capital?! Well, it was a week ahead! The Almost Saturday Charts w/k ending 16th Apr 2010
I remember the week well. It was a pretty good week weatherwise in Southern England. I believe Sounds also disappeared in April 1991. I used to enjoy their spoof on Piers Morgan, with a column called "Prize Moron"!! So many Music Papers gone now. It was in 1990, that Number One magazine was swallowed up by the BBC, which meant no one any longer printed the Network Top 75. Only a Top 50 via NME & Melody Maker.

Sunday 13th April 1958 The usual programme format. 01 01 MAGIC MOMENTS/CATCH A FALLING STAR - PERRY COMO 02 03 WHOLE LOTTA WOMAN - MARVIN RAINWATER 03 03 NAIROBI - TOMMY STEELE 04 05 MAYBE BABY - CRICKETS 05 02 DON`T/I BEG OF YOU - ELVIS PRESLEY 06 09 SWINGING SHEPHERD BLUES - TED HEATH AND HIS MUSIC 07 07 LA DEE DAH - JACKIE DENNIS 08 06 THE STORY OF MY LIFE - MICHAEL HOLLIDAY 09 13 TEQUILA - THE CHAMPS 10 17 A WONDERFUL TIME UP THERE/TOO SOON TO KNOW - PAT BOONE 11 10 GOOD GOLLY MISS MOLLY - LITTLE RICHARD 12 10 JAILHOUSE ROCK - ELVIS PRESLEY 13 12 MANDY - EDDIE CALVERT 14 NE WHO`S SORRY NOW - CONNIE FRANCIS 15 08 AT THE HOP - DANNY AND THE JUNIORS 16 18 TO BE LOVED - MALCOM VAUGHAN 17 20 THE BIG BEAT - FATS DOMINO 18 14 APRIL LOVE - PAT BOONE 19 19 OH OH I`M FALLING IN LOVE AGAIN - JIMMIE RODGERS 19 16 BABY LOVER - PETULA CLARK Another little known fact, as Danny And The Juniors were on their last week in the top 20, not many people realise that this was not actually the original version. The original had be recorded a few weeks before them by Nick Todd who was the younger brother of Pat Boone. Nick`s version did manage to chart in a top 20 in February 1958. There was just the one new entry with Connie Francis, on the way to the top. Bubblers that week were, "To Be Loved" Jackie Wilson, Frank Sinatra (again), "Breathless" Jerry Lee Lewis, who tied with Frankie Vaughan`s double A side "Can`t Get Along Without You/We Are Not Alone".

The BBC Charts 1958 - 1969
Sunday 6th April 1958 David Jacobs presents at 10.40pm on the Light Programme, with the usual Top 20 highlights, the top 3, and new releases. 01 01 MAGIC MOMENTS/CATCH A FALLING STAR - PERRY COMO 02 02 DON`T/I BEG OF YOU - ELVIS PRESLEY 03 03 NAIROBI - TOMMY STEELE 03 06 WHOLE LOTTA WOMAN - MARVIN RAINWATER 05 08 MAYBE BABY - CRICKETS 06 03 THE STORY OF MY LIFE - MICHAEL HOLLIDAY 07 10 LA DEE DAH - JACKIE DENNIS 08 06 AT THE HOP - DANNY AND THE JUNIORS 09 15 SWINGING SHEPHERD BLUES - TED HEATH AND HIS MUSIC 10 05 JAILHOUSE ROCK - ELVIS PRESLEY 10 11 GOOD GOLLY MISS MOLLY - LITTLE RICHARD 12 14 MANDY - EDDIE CALVERT 13 NE TEQUILA - THE CHAMPS 14 13 APRIL LOVE - PAT BOONE 15 09 YOU ARE MY DESTINY - PAUL ANKA 16 17 BABY LOVER - PETULA CLARK 17 NE A WONDERFUL TIME UP THERE/IT`S TOO SOON TO KNOW - PAT BOONE 18 20 TO BE LOVED - MALCOM VAUGHAN 19 NE OH OH I`M FALLING IN LOVE - JIMMIE RODGERS 20 NE THE BIG BEAT - FATS DOMINO 4 new entries that week. It has to be said that David Jacobs was rather bias, while presenting Pick Of The Pops. He appeared not to be a Rock N`Roll fan, and a little known fact was that he never once played Jackie Dennis & "La Dee Dah", even though it was up in the top ten! It has to be noted that in his end of year review, which was supposed to feature the number ones of 1958 in December, he still managed to play "Fever" by Peggy Lee despite it never even making the top 5! Just outside the top 20, that week were "Oh Boy" the Crickets (falling out), Frank Sinatra was also out with "All The Way/Chicago" (the double A side), Tony Brent "The Clouds Will Soon Roll By", & Jackie Wilson "Too Be Loved".

The BBC Charts 1958 - 1969
This week was the anniversary of the very first BBC Top 20, to be featured on Pick Of The Pops. Over every week, I shall post the actual charts used by the BBC, up until the very first computerised chart compiled by the British Market Research Bureau on Tuesday 11th Feb 1969. So, on Sunday 30th March 1958...David Jacobs returned to the Pick Of The Pops at 11pm, taking over from the late Alan Dell and featuring Top 20 highlights, the complete top 3, and half an hour of new releases. This was David Jacobs first Top 20 countdown: (Based on an average of lists featured in NME, Melody Maker, Record Mirror, & Disc and compiled by Derek Chinnery) Note: The BBC listed all double A sided records together, as they should`ve been) 01 01 MAGIC MOMENTS/CATCH A FALLING STAR - PERRY COMO 02 03 DON`T/I BEG OF YOU - ELVIS PRESLEY 03 02 THE STORY OF MY LIFE - MICHAEL HOLLIDAY 03 03 NAIROBI - TOMMY STEELE 05 04 JAILHOUSE ROCK - ELVIS PRESLEY 06 06 AT THE HOP - DANNY AND THE JUNIORS 06 11 WHOLE LOTTA WOMAN - MARVIN RAINWATER 08 10 MAYBE BABY - CRICKETS 09 07 YOU ARE MY DESTINY - PAUL ANKA 10 20 LA DEE DAH - JACKIE DENNIS 11 08 GOOD GOLLY MISS MOLLY - LITTLE RICHARD 12 09 OH BOY - CRICKETS 13 14 APRIL LOVE - PAT BOONE 14 16 MANDY - EDDIE CALVERT 15 14 ALL THE WAY/CHICAGO - FRANK SINATRA 15 18 SWINGING SHEPHERD BLUES - TED HEATH AND HIS MUSIC 17 17 BABY LOVER - PETULA CLARK 18 15 CAN`T GET ALONG WITHOUT YOU/WE ARE NOT ALONE - FRANKIE VAUGHAN 19 13 LOVE ME FOREVER - MARION RYAN 20 NE TO BE LOVED - MALCOM VAUGHAN Only one new entry to the top 20. Buddy Holly`s "Peggy Sue" had fallen out from the last week`s joint 18, as Derek Chinnery (as compiler) had done a complete list for the previous week. Bubblers were Fats Domino "The Big Beat", Alma Cogan "Sugartime", Moe Kauffman "Swingin`Shepherd Blues" & Jackie Wilson "To Be Loved". Join me next week for Sunday 6th April 1958. My goodness, this could take 11 years!

Number 1 the day you were born?
It`s incorrect! The Radio One Top 40 was Sunday 28th, and the new number one was Cher "The Shoop Shoop Song". It`s wrong because Guiness gives the week ending dates! From 1987, as the new chart was announced on a Sunday...the week ending dates are 6 days behind.
-
Number 1 the day you were born?
Well we know that Radio One announced their chart on a Tuesday before October 1987 (a Wednesday if there was a Bank Holiday Monday). The date would therefore be 4 days earlier than the week end date given in Guiness. From October 1987, Radio One announced the new chart on a Sunday, even though the Tuesday countdown had also broken off on a Saturday. The Sunday chart date would be 6 days before the date given for the week ending in Guiness. But ignore Guiness before 15th Feb 1969, because the chart doesn`t count, and is nonsense and no one ever used it NME was compiled on a Tuesday during the 50s/60s, moving to Wednesdays in the 70s. NME`s shop sample was around 120 in total by 1968. This drop to 100 after 1969. NME claim to have been Britain`s first chart based on Record Sales in November 1952, but they weren`t! Read on Melody Maker was a Monday chart, but switched to Thursday in 1983 thus more ahead than NME. By 1968 it was sampling the biggest number of shops, 150 in total. Like NME, it dropped to 100 after 1969. Contrary to belief Melody Maker compiled the first Record sales chart in the 40s, but stopped it before bringing it back in April 1956 Disc was a Monday chart from Mar 1958 - Sept 1967, when they switched to using the Melody Maker chart. Previous to Sept 1967, the shop samples by Disc were much lower than that of Melody Maker, only around 50 in total Record Retailer was always a week out because it was Saturday compiled. By the time their paper was published, the chart was 5 days out of date, and used a small sample in it`s sales info, sometimes less than 30 shops (hence "Please Please Me" missing number one) that`s why it was nonsense until the British Market Bureau took over compilation Record Mirror was more ahead during the Jan 1955-Mar 1962 period going to print on a Thursday, hitting the shops on Friday mornings. It ceased to be more ahead, when it switched to the Record Retailer chart on Friday 23rd March 1962 Sounds began in 1971, and used the Radio One chart. Later they used the MRIB chart from April 1984, but it was different to the Network Chart, because it didn`t use any airplay. Like the Network Chart it went up to Friday morning. That was originated from Record Business Charts, who compiled it from April 1978 - 1983. It did exist as an EMI chart from 1957, but was based on an average of 4 charts, and 10% sales research of their own The BBC`s own chart was compiled on a Friday from 28th March 1958 - April 61, then switched to Thursday. 31st Dec 1963 was the first BBC Tuesday chart. It was from the December 63 point, when NME, MM, DISC & RR all supplied the chart to the BBC, for their average working. Worked out by Derek Chinnery & later Denys Jones. Thus compiled from over 300 shops, and widely followed by Joe Public. British Market Research Bureau provided the BBC with the first computer based sales chart on Tuesday 11th February 1969 (covering the period Mon - Sat) for the first time
