The Almost Saturday Charts w/k ending 25th Dec 2009
I remember Dustmen`s strike/Firemen and all that stuff. Leading to the end of the original Labour rule of Britain. I often wonder what we be like now had Mr Callaghan won the 1979 Election...The Public Transport/Gas/Electric etc may not have all been privatised. Is that why the country grinds to a halt today?

So, it`s just Kay missing. He fits in around #5 if the physicals are added in. The question is...Do McElderry`s physicals given him #1? Although HMV, have plenty physical copies of the 1992 offering by RATM. So, it could be very interesting...

UK Christmas #2's
Yep, it was quite close with Teletubbies and Spice Girls...even closer further back. In 1986, the Housemartins retained top spot until Jackie Wilson went ahead on the Saturday. 1980, again John Lennon was just beaten by the St Winifred`s School Choir, and the #3 by Jona Lewie was not far behind either in the closest Christmas top 3 ever...Shocking really. Even in 1985, Shakin`Stevens Northern sales gave him the #1. As Whitney Houston remained #1, all over Southern England`s regional charts. Before those...In 1970, Dave Edmunds almost missed out to McGuiness Flint with "When I`m Dead And Gone". They were leading until a late surge by "I Hear You Knocking" at the weekend. Cliff could of nudged ahead of Elvis in 1962, but didn`t quite with "The Next Time/Bachelor Boy". So, Elvis retained with "Return To Sender". Danny Williams couldn`t beat off Frankie Vaughan in time for 1961. So, "Tower Of Strength" was tops then. Cliff never got there for 1960, as Elvis stayed there with "It`s Now Or Never". "I Love You" stuck at 2. All that, but the closest ever #1s at Christmas were in 1959, when Adam Faith retained there with "What Do You Want" & Emile Ford And The Checkmates "What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For", just a few copies away...and similar titles containing those same 4 words! Same small copies apart in 1955, as Dickie Valentine was really going head to head with Bill Haley. Dickie`s "Christmas Alphabet" was not that far from Bill Haley...probably so close it was hard to seperate them.

UK Christmas #2's
It has to be said (I think), that both the Darkness & Teletubbies did retain a top position on the midweek part of the charts until the Friday. It was Saturday sales that put the re-made "Mad World" at the top, and also the same for the Spice Girls was it "Too Much", me thinks!

The Almost Saturday Charts w/k ending 18th Dec 2009
Got to address it properly...I mean that dvd sales should not count to the singles chart if they can not be played on a CD player. How is a dvd...a record? I do think the singles charts of today are a complete mess. Reflecting the average 12 year old only. Hence the state of Radio One`s Chart Countdown. Wouldn`t it be just great if it were like the old days of all ages buying singles?

This show featured Kris Kristofferson & Rita Coolidge. Will the Muppets be in the pop chart today? Note: On the Friday of this week in 1978, BBC screens were blacked out by a Technicians strike. Star Trek/Citizen Smith/The Liver Birds were not screened. ITV reigned supreme with the Muppet Show/Survival Special/Sale Of The Century. BBC2 lost the Country Game/Leo Sayer. Also in 1978, we got our first taste of Aussie Soaps via "The Sullivans". Fortunately we were all at work at 12.30pm, and missed it! They were forgiven though, because we did get the Austalian version of the absolutely brilliant & funny "Father Dear Father" with the late & brilliant Patrick Cargill...Now how about a repeat of this hilarious sitcom ITV? Instead of endless re-runs of "Rising Damp". So, it has to be a new entry to the download chart! Coming soon the full combined up to minute singles...but first the Top 20 Biggest Selling Christmas songs of all time: 20 WOMBLING MERRY CHRISTMAS - THE WOMBLES 1974 425,000 19 I BELIEVE IN FATHER CHRISTMAS - GREG LAKE 1975 450,000 18 DO THEY KNOW IT`S CHRISTMAS - BAND AID II 1989 475,000 17 I WISH IT COULD BE CHRISTMAS EVERYDAY - WIZZARD 1973 500,000 16 RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER - GENE AUTRY 1950 550,000 15 MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE - SHAKIN`STEVENS 1985 580,000 14 ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU - MARIAH CAREY 1994 603,750 13 FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK - POGUES/KIRSTY MACOLL 1987 660,000 12 LONELY THIS CHRISTMAS - MUD 1974 786,000 11 MISLETOE AND WINE - CLIFF RICHARD 1988 790,000 10 STOP THE CAVALRY - JONA LEWIE 1980 800,000 09 HAPPY XMAS (WAR IS OVER) - JOHN LENNON/PLASTIC ONO BAND 1972/80 828,500 08 WHEN A CHILD IS BORN - JOHNNY MATHIS 1976 870,000 07 WHITE CHRISTMAS - BING CROSBY 1942/77 1,019,000 06 MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY - SLADE 1973 1,089,000 05 DO THEY KNOW IT`S CHRISTMAS - BAND AID 20 2004 1,150,000 04 MARY`S BOY CHILD - HARRY BELAFONTE 1957 1,180,000 03 LAST CHRISTMAS - WHAM! 1,498,000 02 MARY`S BOY CHILD-OH MY LORD - BONEY M 1978 1,985,000 01 DO THEY KNOW IT`S CHRISTMAS - BAND AID 1984 3,602,000 Controversy remains as Jona Lewie & Johnny Mathis hits are not actually Christmas songs...anti war for Jona, and a no mention of Christmas in the Johnny Mathis song with music "Soleado", which had already been a hit for the St Andrews Chorale in Feb 1976 as "Cloud 99". During the week, I was aproached by a bunch of enthusiasts at DTR headquarters...they said "Dave, we are fed up with the way the charts are manipulated by crap talent shows, 12 year olds music, downloads and the like". I agreed with them all the way. So, I got my thinking cap on, and decided to come up with a more family related chart, like the days of the 60s/70s/80s. Here is what I came up with (after dumping X Factor/all download alones etc) 01 December Song - George Michael 02 Christmas EP - Pet Shop Boys 03 Bad Romance - Lady Gaga 04 Children In Need Medley - Peter Kay 05 Silver Bells - Terry Wogan/Aled Jones 06 A Soldier's Christmas - Soldiers 07 You Know Me - Robbie Williams 08 Meet Me Halfway - Black Eyed Peas 09 What About Now - Westlife 10 Doesn`t Mean Anything - Alicia Keys 11 Tik Tok - Kesha 12 I Wish - Mini Viva 13 I Need You - N-Dubz 14 Fragile Tension - Depeche Mode 15 Morning After Dark - Timbaland 16 About A Girl - Sugababes 17 Empire State - Jay Z 18 All You Need Is Love - Bandaged 19 Invaders Must Die - Prodigy 20 Got Some - Pearl Jam 21 You Got The Love - Florence And The Machine 22 Cornerstone Ltd - Arctic Monkeys 23 Rain - Mika 24 Just Like You - Ian Brown 25 Man`s Machine EP - Jamie T 26 Winter Winds - Mumford & Sons 27 Dominoes - Big Pink 28 The Spell - Alphabeat 29 Goodbye England - Laura Marling 30 Kings & Queens - 30 Seconds To Mars That`s the best I could do...with no downloads/crap talent shows/manipulated radioplay/boring same old Xmas songs...but just physically all ages related sales! Hang on for this week`s singles...

The finale. The complete combined singles compiled thus: The Top 20 based on Chart Show tv, but without airplay plus added sales. The 21-40 based on a mish-mash of physicals/downloads. I reckon, she`d carry it off rather well! Not to mention "Let`s Turkey Trot". Now that would be something! ;) "Gob Gob A Diddlet".

Next week`s Chart - The Preview for Sunday 13th Dec
I think it`s rather unfair. Even though IMHO I never ever rated Rihanna anyway, so it was a blessing! I compare Rihanna to Little Eva...both crap singers that can`t hold a note.

Next week`s Chart - The Preview for Sunday 13th Dec
Unfortunately or not (for us). In our sampling we have not ever included dvd sales...that`s what has kept him at the top, because let`s face it, the actual madley is crap!

The Almost Saturday Charts w/k ending 11th Dec 2009
It may mention Christmas (Last Year you went away at Christmas), but it`s hardly Christmas really. I mean if you include that, then we could include such songs as Kiss Me & Stephen Tin Tin Duffy because it mentions "Callers like it was Christmas Eve". It has to have a Christmas connection in the title really, and Sugababes would be New Year with this title, as in "This Perfect Year" along with Dina Carroll etc. It certainly does get difficult to compile though because like you say, you have to determine what really is Christmas or not. We don`t include East 17/Frankie Goes To Hollywood or stuff like that either as they cash inon Chrismas with snow & Nativity scenes etc, but don`t mention Christmas anywhere. It also is hard to go under #60 in the list because figures of sales are half cut, and questionable. I question earlier that Kate Bush sold 75,000 and also questioned the fact it wasn`t exactly Christmas either...It`s December based, with a line "Saint Nicholas down the chimney" but not all the way Christmas.

Note: Some figures are not exactly correct on some points, so I haven`t included them. For instance some people suggest that Kate Bush sold 75,000 in 1980 with "December Will Be Magic Again". If that is true, then the Barron Knights would have sold much more with "Never Mind The Presents". So, we are working on it!

Scott Mills to host xmas Rabbito One chart show
Absolutely Pete. I doubt Mills/Or whoever will play any more than Yates. Unfortunately the programme is aimed at a bunch of kids, whom Radio One seem to highly regard it a good thing, to let them get high mobile phone costs, by texting constantly. The annoying thing is over on The BigTop40, they don`t play artists not on their playlists, but play the top ten twice and still manage to play about 45 songs! Radio One could be playing the Top 50 in those 3 hours, and they have no excuse...just a bunch of out of touch producers/crap presenters with a mental age of 12. One week, Yates spoke of going into a shop and sneezing and snot going on the counter. Do people (even kids) want to hear that on the air? Surely the teenagers have less juvenile chat than that themselves. It`s quite ridiculous.

Why do people download the same Christmas songs every damn year? Where are the likes of Dana/Showaddywaddy/Gilbert O`Sullivan etc. That was the kind of stuff we listened too. I mean you only have to switch on the radio to hear Mariah/Wizzard/Slade/Pogues...4 songs I personally detest! "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" is probably the worst, and just a remake of their previous hit "Angel Fingers". Anyway outside the Physical top 20 lurks Ian Brown/Taio Cruz/Timbaland/30 Seconds To Mars/50 Cent. What a shame Ian missed out.
