The Almost Saturday Charts w/k ending 4th Dec 2009
Here comes the big finish then, with the complete lowdown. The chart compiled thus...The top 20 based on Chart Show tv, but without airplay and with added sales. The 21-40 based on a mish-mash of physical/download sales. The 41-75 totally based on downloads...making it the most up to date chart in the UK at this point. Peter runs in with 118k...amazingly crashing in to become the biggest selling physical of the year. Is that something like 90,000 physicals? We will end with Part One of the Christmas all time best sellers. For this list (a top 80), we do not include the likes of Stay Another Day/Power Of Love etc...because they are not actually about Christmas apart from the videos that have some loose connection i.e. snow or a nativity scene! 81 WE SHOULD BE TOGETHER FOR CHRISTMAS - CLIFF RICHARD 1991 80 YOUR CHRISTMAS WISH - THE SMURFS 1996 79 LITTLE DRUMMER BOY - HARRY SIMEONE CHORALE 1959 78 CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN - FRANK KELLY 1983 77 GAUDETTE - STEELEYE SPAN 1973 76 21ST CENTURY CHRISTMAS - CLIFF RICHARD (43,000 copies) 75 COLD AS CHRISTMAS - ELTON JOHN 1983 (45,000 copies) 74 SO NEAR TO CHRISTMAS - ALVIN STARDUST 1984 (55,000 copies) 73 MAKE A DAFT NOISE FOR CHRISTMAS - GOODIES 1975 72 2000 MILES - PRETENDERS 1983 71 BLUE CHRISTMAS - ELVIS PRESLEY 1964 70 A CHEEKY CHRISTMAS - CHEEKY GIRLS 2003 69 LITTLE DRUMMER BOY-PEACE ON EARTH - BANDAGED 2008 (61,000 copies) 68 IF EVERY DAY WAS LIKE CHRISTMAS - ELVIS PRESLEY 1966 67 LAST CHRISTMAS - CASCADA (Double A Side) 2007 66 JINGLE BELL ROCK - MAX BYGRAVES 1959 65 JINGLE BELLS - CRAZY FROG 2005 64 CHRISTMAS IN DREADLAND - JUDGE DREAD 1975 63 MERRY GENTLE POPS - BARRON KNIGHTS 1965 62 CHRISTMAS THROUGH YOUR EYES - GLORIA ESTEFAN (Double A Side) 1994 61 RENTA SANTA - CHRIS HILL 1975 We will carry on next week, with nos 60-41. Scott Mills to host xmas Rabbito One chart show
What is this Chart Of The Decade that Nihal is doing? It hardly makes much difference who hosts the top 40, because whoever does it...will miss half of the songs out. I can not understand why over recent weeks, it seems that by 5pm, they are already in the top 20! Surely if they have 3 hours, it`s far to much time, in which case the programme should return to just 2 hours...because it seems endless chat and nonsense text reading has made it worse than ever. Don`t you just get sick of Reggie`s sickly voice?! In 3 hours they could be playing the full top 50. The programme is a disgrace. Mills is almost as much a tit as Reggie anyway.

Making the chart a mess this week. Look`s like the BigTop40 are making a big mistake, as Peter peaks at #37 on it. Though, they wouldn`t support the BBC anyway! Won`t it be fun to see how Terry/Aled/Sharon do?! ;) Perhaps iTunes is so much ahead though, that Mr Derulo will eventually top the combined chart. Coming soon, the full combined singles....And also Part One of our annual visit into the top selling Christmas Hits of all time, and this year we also include Gene Autry and "Rudolph"....It`s all coming.

I`m still not sure whether "All You Need Is Love" was in the shops. Can anyone confirm it?

I`m trying to remember who was also lined up to play the Doctor back then. At some point the chap who played "Mr Pastry" was in the running. Richard Hearne was it? Ron Moody was down to take the role of another, and Michael Horden was down to take the Patrick Troughton role I believe.

Absolutely. It was a shame that Brookside was taken off. It even had a decent theme tune.

There are many ex-BBC employees who detest it. I`ll tell you why...Eastenders budget was so big in 1985, that it was the reason certain BBC shows getting shelved/cancelled. This included the slashing of the budgets of series, like the afore mentioned "Dr Who". Michael Grade used cheapo repeats to fill gaps of cancelled shows, such as "The Muppet Show". Your licence fee accounted for a big proportion too. Enders also, was a con in the ratings with the weekday showings (Tues/Thurs) being added to the Sunday repeat. Falsely giving it the #1 show, when it infact was still Coronation Street. Also, if you really believe 29million watched the Christmas day episode in 1986, then let you be told that this also included 6million of the Sunday Omnibus. A con, and a programme that in my humble opinion ruined the BBC Schedules. Real people living in the real East End are quite happy go lucky too, where as the people in Eastenders are psychopathic manic depressives!

It was the week of "Pyramids Of Mars". Though, I didn`t use the individual story cast. I took it from the season`s full cast. I seem to remember that Ian first appeared in the Jon Pertwee story "Carnival of Monsters", although he played a different character other than "Harry". That story got a BBC2 repeat in November 1981 (Mon-Thurs). Ian was also a writer of DW stories too, of course....and remember the spin-off book "Harry Sullivan`s War?"

The Basil Brush Show kicked off the BBC`s Saturday evening assisted by Roy North. As Chris Tarrant hosted TISWAS in the ATV region, while future queen of the show Sally James fronted LWT`s "Saturday Scene" in the London area. The unfortunate flop of 1975, was "The Invisible Man" with David McCallum as the scientist who`s experiment went wrong in the Klae Corporation. It was originally shown on Fridays at 7.15. Very popular in Britain, so much so it was shown 4 times between 1975 & 1990. In the US, (where it was made) they didn`t like it. They cancelled it in December 1975, with some episodes unseen there at that point. 6million homes watched weekly in the UK. The final episodes, saw the BBC put it up against ITV`s "Opportunity Knocks" on Mondays. In 1976, the US recreated it as "Gemini Man" with Ben Murphy injured in a radiation blast under the sea while working for INTERSECT. This failed worse, and wasn`t so clever in the UK either. Towards the end of that series the female part "Abby Lawrence" (played by Katherine Crawford) was dropped, and never explained on screen. Two episodes were tied together for a film in 1981 called "Riding With Death". Even more incoherent was the disappearance of the "Abby" character, and the amazing growing of Leonard Driscoll`s (William Sylvester`s) moustache! On watching the series again recently, I realised that most of the stories, had been basically nicked from previous stories of the 1975 Invisible Man series anyway.
