good song, i remember her sounding a bit different on XF though i only saw her once, wonder what her other songs will sound like. (i.e. has she done a Paulo Nutini on us and just sings with an affected vocal unlike his previous album). Should do well. i'll stick my neck out and say number 1, though i'm not sure what competition she has although everyone is blethering on about chipmunk. Haven't heard his song. As far as fanbase on XF, blatantly hers was smaller than Alexandra's or JLS' or she would have come higher than them in the competition! Obviously that can change over time though (*ahem* Sugababes)
  4. the GS & AAG sales help estimate when its up to. 4Music usually round their OCC figures to the nearest 5k as is obvious from all the old singles being nearly the same when you do that. AYN obviously up a bit though :-) thanks for these
  5. hmmm, makes you wonder about Burke's supposed record...
  6. not according to music week- all sales from original run. is it even available digitally yet?
  7. Hard call. they have months of pre-orders from the original nov release and the build up to this time including the further delays. May save them. I suspect they'll slide in the mids all week as with singles as a result. I suppose if it debuts higher than 8 and sells more than the 23k ish C&S opened on it will be a victory/improvement (arguably). Personally don't think glee will be massive but obv still a threat :)
  8. Really? that's exactly what i was hoping! very summery feel it'll be perfect. In terms of telephone i'd confidently say t10 but its been around and kind of steadily lukewarm despite the increased airplay so i'm not sure higher. The video is sure to be thought provoking and it is the GaGa so i should probably have more faith. In which case another paparazzi type #4 maybe ^_^
  9. I think its weekly as cumulative would be hard to keep track. I asked dave b4 but not 100% perhaps he will clarify?
  10. Tbf, sweet 7 was due out in nov and was doing much better in pre orders then, so I'm sure the total won't be too bad but can understand if loads of ppl pre ordered it months ago less ppl will be now
  11. I seem to remember it was about 965k b4, it must be quite close now 2...
  12. Talking of all these songs nearing 1mil what's bleeding love sold this year/to date? Has it been t200 this year, always in and out... Thanks ;-)
  13. i wasn't saying there was a pattern of any kind, merely an observation of what people say not necessarily being accurately what they mean in this debate
  14. Its a shame this debate has focussed more on people's favourite artists than the concept. The "difficult second album" (or sometimes this is applied to third instead) is an established theory, probably for many of the reasons already mentioned. I think the mistake often made and what this thread has shown is that it's often not the 2nd album people are on about, but the "post-breakthrough" album. So for example, Kelly Clarkson's 1st Thankful, had minimal impact here, but after the roaring success of Breakaway the 3rd My December was considered a flop, despite having outsold her first album. Most artists are lucky to get one "in the moment" album, like Breakaway, or Spirit for example. But is it realistic to expect that level of sales to continue or increase, and is that how we should judge "a flop"? Some artists do pull the feat off twice, e.g. Dido with 2x3mil selling albums (though look at the 3rd - syndrome!), or the Spice girls to an extent whose 2nd album was still massive though failed to match the debut's sales (2.9mil --> 1.5mil), and third struggled. Then there are the occasional artists who continue this, e.g. Robbie Williams (half dozen 2mil sellers though rudebox was obviously a mis-step), Coldplay or The Killers (few mil+ sellers a piece). This is definitely the exception rather than the rule. I think how you measure a flop is totally subjective. It seems unfair in a way to call Leona or Rihanna a flop at this stage for example, and i'll give an example why: consider Kylie Minogue. Fever was a huge seller (1.7mil) and she's generally thought of as a huge artist. She and her albums since have been thought of as successful despite selling far less (Body Language 350-400k, X 450-475k), and in fact sold similarly to the previous one too, hailed as her big comeback at the time (Light Years, 350k). Now there was a minority of people i remember when BL and X came out who said flop, didn't sell as much as fever but i don't think that was the general consensus. By contrast, Rihanna has already sold 300k+ of Rated R (her 2nd biggest album) and Leona~600k of Echo but Kylie has never been written off for these level of sales (and she sold even less at some phases of her career). So should flop be based on just the previous/biggest album, career averages, absolute units shifted, comparison to other artists or (as in the case of record companies i'm sure) return on investment? Sorry about the ramble, kind of spun this out a bit. Debate away!
  15. We have some random figures. Is there any chance of any more? Good to see some consistent artists represented here. Hats off to robbies album total, that's not even including his first which has sold another 2.5mil has it? Thanks

Lol. I dont think in this song but i always thought she sounded like anastacia in "Save the Lies". Bit disappointed. They're obviously sexed up her image so she'll actually sell something this time around but if you hadn't told me it was her i wouldn't have recognised her from the song or video. Song's ok but despite trying hard still missing the spark for me. Hope the album's better

Thanks Steve, that explains it. I like RedOne better then!

I couldn't be assed reading this whole thing so sorry if someone has said something similar i'm not copying you! :P It's some of the usual up to the minute production tricks yet sounds sort of dated at the same time. Another RedOne i'd wager a guess? The "dah-dah-dah" bit at the start reminds me of Britney's f*** me, but the whole thing actually sounds more like the saturdays than the Sugababes. Probably top 10, but not too high, Feb is quite quiet after all. Its ok, just not that innovative for launching a new album :-(
  19. I seem to remember mw saying gaga was over 3mil if you include her Wale single credit, so not sure if the cole's will count any heartbreaker dregs, prob just cherrypicks (eg parachute). Sugababes 467k, think they were half mil last year too despite below par single sales the last couple of years. Their back catalogue obviously is still really popular (can't all be ayn!) Good to see, and gaga has been amazing this year ;-)

All this drama over wannabe sales resurfaces every now and then! Funny, must affect tonnes of sales from this era but its always wannabe you hear from! What I wonder is in the all time list is wannabe still narrowly ahead of never ever by all saints? The spices had a bigger comeback but I imagine never ever aging better and having more longterm appeal in terms of background downloads. Its the battle for biggest ever girlband single even after all these years!
  21. I don't know if when well here but far as I know 1 more week
  22. Video Phone is, far as i'm aware. Just found this out too, thanks to us getting a week 53 this year amazing! 150 has a nicer ring to it though, and getting 53 weeks to do it is kind of lucky/a cheat so maybe we should call it "150+6" weeks. Thanks for posting the top 100 also, though its kind of irrelevant to the record :P
  23. Just found out this is a 53 week year! Therefore this week's sales count for 2009 YTD! Also the positions achieved in Sun's chart (27/12/2009, week 53, issue date 2/1/10) count for this year! MFR is correct with the statement regarding methodology, the last 53 week year was 2004 :) Hope that helps
  24. Yes I've looked at hers too as she's charted loads of songs but quite a way off actually I love that both their next singles feature each other, they are the dream team of the moment! I take your point Zeus which I've kind of implied in my original post but equally GaGa isn't reissuing her entire back catalogue to set this record unlike oasis did. Ultimately its supply and demand- even physicals stayed available when the song was selling well still. The chart has really changed so comparison is difficult. Still think its a great achievement though :-)
  25. it could be. If someone new can have as big an impact and keep their release rate up. There's no constraint anymore by physical limitation and with download chartruns stretching longer than the old physicals as a result plus the inclusion of album cherrypicks in the chart, it is becoming more and more likely. Good for her though. She is the hit of the year in my book. :)
