So Rihanna has a 3rd song spend 14 weeks top 10 (Diamonds) and a few other hits in double figures. Are there other artists who can match these top10 runs in length and quantity?

I think when people do the complete my album thing they credit an album sale but lose a single sale (as they have "returned" it much like what happens if you returned a CD to a shop). Sure I remember MW talking about it b4 as something had a weeks negative sales as a result. If that were the case with these album pre-orders a single could chart at no1 on the first week then when the album came out say the following week it could disappear from the chart completely and lose all/most the sales which actually made it no1 the previous week. To me, that would seem a very unjustified no1! Aside from that shame on you David Bowie for making your song iTunes only and not giving consumers more choice. Interestingly I don't think other digital retailers have a "complete my album" type function so it is an iTunes type issue. Also to track sales of the album preorder vs an individual track download wouldn't they need to have separate catalogue numbers from the record company or wouldn't it rely on iTunes arranging to count them separately rather than it being the OCC neglecting to? It may not be their issue - maybe they genuinely can't separate it the way things stand

Alex was just off a million after 3weeks but her 3rd week was already down to 100k ish so she was trailing off faster than James who should be on a similar figure after 4 weeks but may sell better in the long run based on early indications. Should have it by end of year latest i`d wager (probably much b4)

And 35k for morning glory in the same time. Wonder if anyone else would overtake it anytime soon? Wonder if the small no. For queen is just to do with rounding - rounded up b4, rounded down now so appears less

Small bump - noting that Emeli has very confidently cleared the million and is closing on double the sales of her nearest competitor this year. However we still have a week left - where will her sales finish and will anyone else cross the million? I'm going to say no and maybe she'll scrape 1.4mil!

Small bump here for 2012 - Rihanna sets another record this year- she has now surpassed Madonna as the female artist with the most weeks on the singles chart with a TOTAL OF 776! she's now in the all time top 5 but will have to almost double her tally to take no1!

So white Xmas has sold more than fony but isn't a million seller? Interesting wonder what it does on downloads. Was of The impression a lot of its sales were before there WAS a singles chart. Merry Xmas all!

I like this. Thanks for doing. I get what people are saying about the methodologies possibly being different between the two lists and figures being revised due to further info unearthed or varying opinions over the years but it does still give some nice general trends and the way some things like eye of the tiger and wonderwall still sell is pretty amazing! May actually be nice to see the list reordered in terms of biggest tks smallest increases if possible..

May for all the reasons already stated. She will stay no1 ytd as well god help us all

ffs. i thought i was the only one who seemed bothered by this but it seems not! Its like she's the only new artist this year and some people are behaving like she's a talent the likes of which we've never seen. Overexposed barely covers it! between that and been given "Young Alumnus of the Year" by a university she left her Medicine course in because she thought singing songs was more important than helping sicking people (I thought Alumnus involved graduating? !!) and now she is winning SPORTS personality of the year - wtf is she to do with this (ok i know she didnt actually win this)! I can see her dining out on this for a while longer, totally raping the Brits and doing a "Mother's Day slipcover", Easter Edition etc and staying #1 in YTD for a while next year. New Album in time for X-Factor multiple slots again next year. 2nd album will be successful but all the "of the minute" exposure will be on someone else so it will drop a lot from this one (a la Florence and the Machine). Anyhoo, back to the point of this thread, i don't think she will be no1 by end of this week, unless she has more promo it will die off. Have any of the big acts got promo this week? Fun to see JA and TJC so close, a nice battle and James is holding up well for XF winner thanks to it being released the week earlier again this year.

Flip side is if they underestimated demand and people struggle to get it this week (If they had none left already no one can buy til they get in more) - CDSs not usually that popular now...

Yet their whole new strategy was "impulse buy electronics" which I found the notion of ridiculous. Who has spare £400 quid kicking about to buy an iPad or smart phone on "impulse"! However, I have purchased a phone and tablet for them and their prices are much of a muchness with other shops for these. However they have reduced their CD shelf space (the a-z) as a result in my locals and (oddly) reduced their blue-rays a lot. If you believe their earlier announcements this year it was the electronics which they were actually doing quite well with but I find with both online and the shops they are often poorly stocked vs other retailers which has led to me buying elsewhere and they never seem to know when more will arrive (vs amazon who always estimate and email with updates). Certainly seen some ads for the electronics (e.g. in "stuff" magazine, maybe it's more targeted)

So 124k in last 2 days for James Arthur presumably including his physicals. He is slowing despite the CD from Tuesday's sales averaging 62k daily for the past 2. He should comfortably beat Matt and Joe's sales but I think Leona is safe! It'll be touch and go if he clears the half mil, be hoping for big Saturday physicals I'm guessing. Wonder how high ytd he can manage?

Could see RiRi doing a "what's my name" with this when the airplay picks up and video. Britney and will possible depends if they lose steam in the next week. I think Bruno Mars is over and gangnam a rather outside chance too

Think Bruno could be on for 150k could be close call if he's fastest selling over 1D and Mumford. If it's not him will Buble hit fever pitch and sell more next week? Not out the question sadly. Think Olly will best Sande by the end of the week unless she has more promo. Think 2-4 in albums will all be close or over 100k be great to see Olly maintain it James Arthur very hard to call will need to see how the physical impacts when they start to hit in Friday mids (or thurs if occ are generous). Could clear 500k but surely 400-450k at least now which is quite something considering initial expectations on here 70-80k for will and Britney? Maybe?

True to say- remembering Leona's 1st week she was around 50% physical was she not? (2006). Even later Alexandra had huge physicals thanks to Woolworths selling it at like 25p as they were closing (2008). I can't really remember for later years probably as they were less impressive or not quoted. However, the charity tag, and moreover the stocking filler effect is likely to result in more physicals than you'd ever normally get now (or the "here take this now and shut up til Xmas" placating effect possibly! :lol: ) Add to that the wide availability and just how busy these places are this time of year I think 6 figures is possible, although we still have 2 full weeks to Xmas would these be all in week 1 with that in mind? Anyone remember the physical split for other winners?

Can see the logic of this, and probably would have upgraded my prediction if had seen the pop bars. II've more been looking at what the established hits have been selling in the top5 in thinking about it. No doubt will tail off significantly as the week progresses but impressive lead anyone know what the biggest lead at iTunes no1 was?

The boys tend to sell more when they win initially? I've no idea about the acts but viewing figs down, singles market up (though X-F doesn't perform like the market it's kind of an aberrant statistically) and this time for charity which should boost although physical stockists get thinner and thinner every year. I''ll say 200-250k!

Don't GA have a version at 69 too, probably the album cut rising so not so bad combined. Great for scream and shout but OA/OS would have been preferable they'll have their work cut out next week. Is 99 good for a preorder? What do big ones usually get to pre-release?

I'm loving the "it's Britney bitch" callback! Her accent is slightly ridiculous but works for the song. The production and rap is mainly business as usual for will but just enough fresh going on to pull it off I think. No idea when it's being released and what against but a shoe in for no1 surely
