On the whole I would agree, until you get to your final year. I have just finished my degree and I didn't have a spare minute. I spent the long summer before my third year researching my dissertation topic and reading all of my year texts (consider that I have done English so I've studied 3 texts a week, so perhaps 9 novels, 9 plays and 9 poets per term to prep.) We only got Reading Weeks in our first two years. My Christmas holiday was spent doing assessed essays for the modules I'd just completed. Then my Easter was incredibly stressful because I had to complete my 40 page dissertation and revise for exams. Having said that I was finished by the 10th May. I was very angry that my exams were only 7 days after my dissertation, but I am really glad now that I've got time to unwind before employment - an advantage I've got over people who graduate later. As for school holidays, they definitely need the summer as it is to be kids and to develop socially. It is the right amount of time - in my view - because in the last week of the holiday the kids start to get restless, hence it's time to go back to school!. Although I do think that Easter needs balancing out.
