Golly Dolls
yeah sure - i understand that. in which case, little britain is highly offensive (they had a minstrel esque show, the vomit at the asian womans cooking etc) - not only because of its racist parts, but because it is in a climate in which they should definately know better. but i haven't heard any such complaints about it.

Ban all barmy degrees!
oxford is a little different to other places (apparently - i only know what i'm told so don't shoot the messenger!) you choose/are assigned a college in your first year. it is unheard of for anyone not to live in their college in the first year and of course they then move into houses. they aren't stopping you from working in the holidays (which to be honest is all most of my friends do anyway - i'm one of a rare number who work during term time) and they just say that before you go looking for a term time job then the uni will help/fund you. at least they are trying to do something to help - my uni couldn't give a toss if you were about to go under!!

Golly Dolls
But if neither party are offended by the incident - such as the whole BB thing then it is ludicrous for a third party to get involved and judge the situation differently to those involved! I'm not saying that we should stay in the past, but if we forget the past then it is far too likely to happen again which is i believe the basis for teaching history?! in particular things like the apartheid and the holocaust!

Camden Market
it may not affect trade for the Council...but it definately will for those people whose livlihoods depend on it.

Camden Market
My friends make their income in Camden (http://www.suaydesign.com/ - sorry - shameless advertising!) and without their stall and shopfront in camden they would be truly stuffed. to be honest, i think their cause is more important than telling the government my address which they already know anyway.

Ban all barmy degrees!
Well no - if you were covert about it I'm sure they wouldn't know. But their colleges are totally enclosed - there are people on the gates 24/7 and you have to be present at formal dinners regularly. But yeah, maybe ban is the wrong word - maybe i should have said "actively discourage" but either way, they would rather give you money or pay for your books for you than you need to seek employment.

Golly Dolls
The danger lies in people forgetting the past. If people forget about Nazi Germany is far too easy for it to happen all over again.

Golly Dolls
I don't understand a couple of things - I understand that neither ICR, her son or friends were offended by the Gollywog doll and carried no racist intentions upon it. They never planned to use it for any racist intent or any such matter, so why should it bother you if they have/had a Golly wog?! That is totally different to walking through African countries as someone (I don't remember who) said that you would not get out of alive. Anyone can see that that is provocative - it is like walking through Berlin doing John Cleese's famous Hitler walk - whilst in the safety of our own homes we can use our intelligence (because yes, most of us who are taking the time to debate this do have a little bit) to see the funny side/enjoyment in it. But we are not stupid enough to take it out of that context. The danger comes when ill-educated people have access to these items. They are not racist in intent, but in the wrong hands they can provoke many emotive reactions. Like ICR said, it is all about intent and to be quite honest, the racist, ignorant people in this world do not need a little knitted toy to convey their hate. Nor do they need a nursery rhyme - they are quite capable of doing it themselves. And don't forget the majority of nursery rhymes and fairy tales are brutal and wicked. Think of Cinderella or the Beauty and the Beast and Hansel and Gretal. But they are not all about race and people forget how women are belittled in these stories (the princess who always needs rescuing because they can't do anything or the wicked stepmother) - they are more than happy to carry on showing these images time and time again on Disney films, why should this be any different? You can't take one stance with some inequality and a different stance on other inequality.

Ban all barmy degrees!
My friend who studies Law at Oxford says that her main problem is that the university do not allow you to get a job during term time and if you run out of money you should apply to them for grants/bursaries which obviously severely effects the working class students!

Celebs and drugs
I can see totally what you're saying Russt - but they are rarely forced into the taking the drug in the first place! People need to take responsibility to the mess they are putting themselves into. whilst addiction - as you quite rightly say - is an illness people still need to try and tackle that. like other mental/pyschological disorders, you seek help, you try and sort it out. once people become addicted to the drug then they have little choice in the matter as their lives quickly spiral out of control, but everyone (no matter what their wellbeing) has the ability to say NO.

Celebs and drugs
I remember a time when Robbie turned round in a press conference who were giving Kate Moss a hard time about her drug addictions and picked out a number of journalists and said to them that they had no right to judge her when he knows that they are no better! I'm not saying that this is a good way of dealing with things, but it certainly highlights what you are saying! When I was younger I used to love watching This Life on tv - one of the main characters in it - Anna - was a highly highly ambitious lawyer who got caught up in cocaine. This was a BBC programme of the 90s and yet it still stigmatized and associated cocaine with success, money and ambition. I personally am probably seen as quite square - I avoid drugs - its not for me. I smoke very rarely and have only ever had about 2 joints in my life and never done anything stronger. But then put yourself into any celeb's shoes - Robbie Williams (for example) joined Take That before he'd even left school - so he went from an environment where he was protected and safeguarded from the world to a world where everything is available and there is noone to really look after you. Add into this the fact that you feel insecure as f**k because you don't really know what you're doing. And the drugs are very easily available and you can afford them. It's so easy to start and by then its too late. As ICR said, alcohol is nearly always the start - being drunk easily blurs your intentions/will power or whatever. Another thing that to me is completely ludicrous is that everyone knows they can get away with it - I mean Lindsay Lohan was caught driving without a license, under the influence of drugs and in possession of cocaine or whatever the charges are and she has been sentenced to one days imprisonment. And that is after they tagged her so they supposedly could prevent her from drinking. And she is not the only one - Nicole Richie was released from prison after just 82 minutes because it was overcrowded (has anyone seen how tiny she is?! It's hardly likely to uncrowd it by removing her!!) Pete Doherty escapes by some absurd loophole. Paris Hilton was released from jail because it was bad for her mental health - she was feeling down or something. THats the most absurd thing - is that not the idea of a prison sentence?! How is this meant to set an example to easily influenced teenagers? To every day people? Both the UK and the US need to get brave and actually do something to try and change all of this. I also think that drug abuse is very closely linked the rise in Teen Gang Culture and gun/knife crimes.

Ban all barmy degrees!
Ok, I totally agree with the whole architypal courses at Oxbridge - my friend is studying Ancient Greek Philosophy at Oxford...which I don't think is really going to help. Having said that I'm doing an English degree at Reading; but no doubt she will be more employable than me even in a Literature field. Although I disagree that it is all upper class tw@ts!! she has no financial support from either of her parents and is by no means well off. But then, I feel she is a minority!!! All of these courses have a purpose - particularly golf green stuff - yeah, to you and me it seems like tosh, but for someone like my friend Sam who has never held down a job for more than six months he is loving working at a golf club and they are going to pay for him to go to college and learn the skills to improve which is great - surely that is what education is for? and anyhow, i don't think it is a degree in the sense that he get a BSc or anything, it is vocational - like GNVQs. As for horse pyschology - this isn't terribly popular  but horse physiotherapy is hugely popular. And the courses are mostly filled with people who have had horses all their lives, wanted to be a vet but just did not do well enough in exams so have found a different niche. Again, we need jobs filled in every part of Britain - what is the point of everyone been qualified to do the same thing? If we have a whole nation of chemists/technicians who will do the other jobs? Also I know for a fact I would not be at uni if I had to do any of those Science courses! I had to work my socks off to get B's at GCSE in maths and science...but I love English and I am going to do a PGCE in Secondary English teaching next year...which I think is a slightly helpful job to the nation! I did my first year in Sociology and English, but I dropped Sociology after the first year (which was expected anyway - you do 2 subjects in your first year and drop one.) I found that my first year Sociology stuff was identical to my AS/A Level sociology stuff and to be honest, it was really fascinating, but second time round I couldn't be bothered! Media is such a fast growing industry that there are bound to be loads of courses about it. I wonder if studying Literature had the same uproar centuries ago?! Although, I do totally agree that a number of people told me if I want to go into Journalism or any field like that don't get a Media or Journalistic degree. Get a traditional degree and then sit the NCTJ exams. Anyhow, prospective employers can see quite clearly what standard the applicant is firstly by their degree subject and secondly where they took the degree!!

Celebs and drugs
I think that these people come into fame so early that they leave school and almost immediately they are in the public eye with little supervision and to be honest i think they think they are invicible!
