  20. Vanessa Carlton dazzles at Starry Night in the Gardens By Stephanie Schomer Updated: 06/26/08 7:40 AM Buzz up! POPULAR SAVE EMAIL PRINT + Larger Font - Smaller Font Robert Kirkahm/Buffalo News Vanessa Carlton performs at her piano during Starry Night in the Garden. Another photo on Picture Page E10. Through the clouds, the sky wasn’t exactly starry Wednesday night, but the crowd at the Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens took in a beautiful evening of music, food and drink just the same. Starry Night in the Garden, the annual fundraiser for the Botanical Gardens, enjoyed a sizable crowd and minimal rain as headlining act Vanessa Carlton performed. Carlton took the stage — just her and her piano — and opened with “Nolita Fairytale.” Her clear voice and honest lyrics give Carlton a mystical quality that makes her an interesting act. More a complete-package performer than just a vocalist, Carlton’s tremendous piano and songwriting skills shone throughout the evening. As she moved on to “Hands on Me,” an infectious song that got much exposure thanks to its use in advertisements for The CW’s teen-drama “Gossip Girl,” a powerful voice projected out of her petite frame. I always forget how good Carlton is as an artist until I hear one of her songs again, but then it’s clear that there just aren’t many songwriters of her caliber out there. She has repeatedly proven that she is in it for the music, not the fame. After encountering a conflict of creative visions with record label A&M, Carlton shocked the industry by signing with hip-hop label The Inc. Records. She has since released her latest album, “Heroes & Thieves,” and it has been met by critical acclaim. Her sincere and unapologetic nature is conveyed through her songs, delivering a genuine show and portraying a likable performer. Carlton’s debut album, “Be Not Nobody,” was released in 2002 and garnered three Grammy Award nominations and legions of fans, quickly establishing her as one of today’s most promising singer-songwriters. Two albums later, she has built her fan base and earned the respect of the industry. Before performing “Ordinary Day,” Carlton said: “Oh, how I secretly wish all the days were more ordinary,” and as she moved into the song, one of her first big hit singles, fans began to gather around the stage and sing along. The crowd was then treated to a beautiful piano interlude before she performed “White Houses.” The song was the biggest radio hit off her second album, “Harmonium,” and its driving piano and terribly smart lyrics still seemed to please the crowd. While many in attendance came out solely for the food, wine and atmosphere, they were lucky enough to enjoy Carlton’s performance, as well as openers Ferras, Delta Goodrem and Anna Nalick. Goodrem, Australia’s top-selling artist, gave a noteworthy performance. Her strong vocals sounded hauntingly similar to Celine Dion at times, but more pleasing to the ears. As the rain came and went and the crowd sampled food and drink from area vendors, Carlton’s and Goodrem’s performances stole the show, treating the audience to a relaxing and talent-filled night in the gardens.
