  1. Maybe the Elvis Presley re-issues in 2005?
  2. On the contrary, I think most of it was her fault. It was her who quite blatantly divided people into two camps, the "Heartbeats" and "Haters".
  3. Thanks, corrected.
  4. Title of "Twist And Shout" edited in. Thanks for spotting the omission.
  5. With Omi still reigning supreme as the biggest selling single in the UK, here is a list of the Jamaican artists who have had a UK Number One. w/e 11 Nov 67 - Foundations, "Now That I've Found You". Two British-based Jamaicans, Pat Burke & Mike Elliot, became the first people from the island to make the UK number one spot. w/e 06 Jul 68 - Equals, "Baby Come Back". Best known for being the original group of Eddy Grant, Jamaican brothers Derv & Lincoln Gordon were also members w/e 19 Apr 69 - Desmond Dekker & The Aces, "The Israelites". One of the geniune reggae classics, it had a second bite of the cherry when it was re-released in 1975. Dekker had two other top 10 singles w/e 01 May 71 - Dave & Ansel Collins, "Double Barrel". This was Dave & Ansel's debut single. One of the backing musicians was Sly Dunbar, later to become part of Sly & Robbie (of whom more later) w/e 21 Sep 74 - Carl Douglas - "Kung Fu Fighting". Kung Fu was a big craze for a while in the mid 70s, popularised by the TV series starring David Carradine. Douglas had a transatlantic chart topper with this, and also took it back in to the Top 10 24 years later alongside Bus Stop w/e 26 Oct 74 - Ken Boothe, "Everything I Own". Only six weeks after "Kung Fu Fighting", Jamaica was back at number one.Written by David Gates of Bread, the original version was a US Top 5 hit before Boothe took it to number one here, as did Boy George 20-odd years later w/e 04 Feb 78 - Althia & Donna, "Up Town Top Ranking". Female duo Althea Forrest (her first name was mis-spelt on the record and hence the charts at the time) and Donna Reid became the first (and still only) Jamaican females to top the UK singles chart w/e 23 Aug 86 - Boris Gardiner - "I Wanna Wake Up With You". Nearly robbed of a hit in 1970 when his "Elizabethan Reggae" was credited to Byron Lee, Boris returned 16 years later as a saccharine balladeer. It was the only Jamaican UK chart topper of the 1980s w/e 20 Mar 93 - Shaggy, "Oh Carolina" w/e 25 Sep 95 - Shaggy, "Boombastic" w/e 10 Mar 01 - Shaggy featuring Rikrok, "It Wasn't Me" w/e 09 Jun 01 - Shaggy featuring Rayvon" - "Angel". Four number ones mean he has had more than any other artist on this list. "It Wasn't Me" is also the only track listed here to sell a million copies (excluding Boney M, see below). He hasn't bothered the Top 75 since 2005 w/e 08 Jan 94 - Chaka Demus & Pliers featuring Jack Radics & Taxi Gang, "Twist And Shout". Chaka & Pliers had two top 5 hits before enlisting the help of Jack Radics and Taxi Gang (who were Sly & Robbie plus some session musicians) to cover the 60s staple. Brian Poole & The Tremeloes had previously had the biggest hit with the song, but the best known version was that of The Beatles from the "Please Please Me" album. This version was the UK's 700th UK Number 1. w/e 09 Aug 03 - Sean Paul, "Breathe" (Blu Cantrell featuring Sean Paul) w/e 30 Mar 13 - Sean Paul, "What About Us" (Saturdays featuring Sean Paul). Over 20 hits and 2 number ones for Sean Paul Ryan Francis Henriques. A fair proportion of his hits, and both of his chart-toppers (nearly 10 years apart), came as a featured vocalist on other people's records. w/e 08 Sep 07 - Sean Kingston, "Beautiful Girls". Another UK & US number one by Kingston, who was born in Miami but moved to Jamaica aged 6. He took 3 years to get a second Top 10, and after a third Top 10 in 2011 he has faded away. w/e 09 May 15 - Omi, "Cheerleader" - The current UK number one that took an age creeping up the charts, but has now racked up 4 weeks at the top. Note - Two of Boney M (Marcia Barrett and Liz Mitchell) were born in Jamaica but moved to the UK at a young age and are often considered as British. For the record though w/e 13 May 78 - Boney M, "Rivers Of Babylon" w/e 09 Dec 78 - Boney M, "Mary's Boy Child-Oh My Lord" Most of you know the "Rivers Of Babylon" chartrun story by now, rising to number one (and staying there for 5 weeks), dropping naturally to Number 20 before being flipped and "Brown Girl In The Ring" becoming the promoted side and re-bounding all the way back to Number 2. By contrast, their Christmas offering had a far more standard run for a Christmas number one, only 8 weeks in the Top 75 with exactly half of those weeks at number one. Various combinations of all three songs have appeared as part of various medleys and Megamixes since.
  6. Minor point, "China In Your Hand" was the 600th UK Number One, not the 700th. Really enjoying this thread though.
  7. "Animals" still sounds to me like it was knocked up in 5 minutes flat.
  8. I'm pretty sure the OCC won't be crediting him either.
  9. Of course I can. She's the most blatant example of image over talent of the last decade. (although "The Edge Of Glory" was pretty darn good)

If we're talking most weeks Top 75 without making the Top 40, Ken's record was broken last year (and has also been surpassed once again since) 20 - Demi Lovato - "Let It Go" 16 - Ariana Grande - "Love Me Harder" 15 - Ken Barrie - "Postman Pat" ... "Let It Go" would be way ahead on Top 100 weeks too. Six acts have more weeks Top 75 without breaching the Top 40 than our Postman Pat singing friend 30 - Rick James 24 - That Petrol Emotion 23 - Devo 23 - Love And Money 17 - Farmers Boys 16 - Baby Ford.

Restricting it to Top 75 (at the moment my 76-100 data is still under construction) Most Top 75 hits without making the Top 20 16 - Fall 14 - New Model Army 13 - Cocteau Twins (John Peel could have put together a whole show just of those three acts!) 11 - Black Crowes, Motley Crue 10 - Catherine Wheel, Morcheeba 9 - Brass Construction, Lush
  12. Well in that case he doesn't get the Major Lazer song as part of the total.

    John Travolta (1978)
  14. It is going to be available for streaming, but only on Tidal. I think it's good when someone of that stature challenges what is seen as "normal".
  15. First post updated to include "Sugar" with all those weeks at Number 9, plus "Chandelier" now makes a couple of appearances. Also, very early work on positions 76-100, covering the last 2 and a half years or so for now but being extended as best I can, time permitting.
  16. Lucy Rose (both the singer and the band of the same name) were really good when I saw them support Counting Crows in Birmingham before Christmas.
  17. SYA?

So was one of mine, I even managed to get a shoutout to Buzzjack from Dev out of it.
  19. Trouble with doing it by genres is that no-one can precisely define a "dance" record, whereas defining solo female artists is reasonably straightforward Anyway, extending it back 12 months... 6/1/79 - Chaka Khan "I'm Every Woman" (15) 13/1/79 - Olivia Newton-John "A Little More Love" (12) 20/1/79 - Olivia Newton-John "A Little More Love" (5) 27/1/79 - Olivia Newton-John "A Little More Love" (4) 3/2/79 - Olivia Newton-John "A Little More Love" (6) 10/2/79 - Olivia Newton-John "A Little More Love" (10) 17/2/79 - Olivia Newton-John "A Little More Love" (16) 24/2/79 - Gloria Gaynor "I Will Survive" (7) 3/3/79 - Gloria Gaynor "I Will Survive" (4) 10/3/79 - Gloria Gaynor "I Will Survive" (3) 17/3/79 - Gloria Gaynor "I Will Survive" (1) 24/3/79 - Gloria Gaynor "I Will Survive" (1) 31/3/79 - Gloria Gaynor "I Will Survive" (1) 7/4/79 - Gloria Gaynor "I Will Survive" (1) 14/4/79 - Gloria Gaynor "I Will Survive" (5) 21/4/79 - Gloria Gaynor "I Will Survive" (9) 28/4/79 - Kate Bush "Wow" (14) 5/5/79 - Amii Stewart "Knock On Wood" (1) 12/5/79 - Amii Stewart "Knock On Wood" (9) 19/5/79 - Amii Stewart "Knock On Wood" (6) 26/5/79 - Amii Stewart "Knock On Wood" (11) 2/6/79 - Donna Summer "Hot Stuff" (11) 9/6/79 - Anita Ward "Ring My Bell" (3) 16/6/79 - Anita Ward "Ring My Bell" (1) 23/6/79 - Anita Ward "Ring My Bell" (1) 30/6/79 - Anita Ward "Ring My Bell" (2) 7/7/79 - Janet Kay "Silly Games" (3) 14/7/79 - Janet Kay "Silly Games" (2) 21/7/79 - Janet Kay "Silly Games" (2) 28/7/79 - Janet Kay "Silly Games" (3) 4/8/79 - Janet Kay "Silly Games" (6) 11/8/79 - Judie Tzuke - "Stay With Me Till Dawn" (18) 18/8/79 - Judie Tzuke - "Stay With Me Till Dawn" (16) 25/8/79 - Judie Tzuke - "Stay With Me Till Dawn" (20) 1/9/79 - Judie Tzuke - "Stay With Me Till Dawn" (27) 8/9/79 - Judie Tzuke - "Stay With Me Till Dawn" (43) 15/9/79 - Kate Bush - "Kate Bush On Stage EP" (35) 22/9/79 - Kate Bush - "Kate Bush On Stage EP" (27) 29/9/79 - Kate Bush - "Kate Bush On Stage EP" (23) 6/10/79 - Kate Bush - "Kate Bush On Stage EP" (11) 13/10/79 - Lena Martell - "One Day At A Time" (9) 20/10/79 - Lena Martell - "One Day At A Time" (5) 27/10/79 - Lena Martell - "One Day At A Time" (1) 3/11/79 - Lena Martell - "One Day At A Time" (1) 10/11/79 - Lena Martell - "One Day At A Time" (1) 17/11/79 - Lena Martell - "One Day At A Time" (2) 24/11/79 - Lena Martell - "One Day At A Time" (5) 1/12/79 - Lena Martell - "One Day At A Time" (16) 8/12/79 - Lena Martell - "One Day At A Time" (27) 15/12/79 - Lena Martell - "One Day At A Time" (32) 22/12/79 - Diana Ross - "It's My House" (34) 29/12/79 - Diana Ross - "It's My House" (34) (repeated chart) (position overall in chart in brackets)
  20. Rose Royce was a group, not a solo female, so should not be included. The same applies to Sheila B Devotion who would otherwise have taken the 5/1/80 title, so that goes to 5/1/80 - Lena Martell - "One Day At A Time" (35) 12/1/80 - Diana Ross - "It's My House" (32) 19/1/80 - Diana Ross - "It's My House" (49) 26/1/80 - Amii Stewart - "Paradise Bird"/"The Letter" (39) 2/2/80 - Suzi Quatro - "Mama's Boy" (34) AlunaGeorge were a duo of Aluna and George (!) so removing them gives 11/5/13 - Iggy Azalea - "Work" (20) 18/5/13 - Gabrielle Aplin - "Power Cord" (19) and I'd disqualify "Summertime Sadness" as the credit when it was high enough was Lana Del Rey vs Cedric Gervais. 10/8/13 - Eliza Doolittle - "Big When I Was Little" (12)
  21. Is it a single? The article just refers to as an "interlude" from the forthcoming album
  22. With only four Top 10 singles, the last of those back in 2008, and consistently good as they are, I'd say they are not in the league of most of the other acts mentioned in this thread.
  23. Hardly "the norm", just those 3 cases in the entire 90s and they were the first for over 35 years. I'd love to see a real long running Number 1, just imagine how some on here would get more and more angry about it as the weeks ticked on, some were even getting bored by Jess Glynne getting 3 weeks

What's that got to do with the thread?

But you also have to look at the other side of the coin, how many of her number ones were, under the same criteria, "lucky"
