Radio Newtown Top 20 with Kit Curran, 21-4-09
Chart commentary: A logjam at the top of the Radio Newtown chart this week, as the top four remain the same. This means that Calvin Harris gets a third week at number one with 'I'm Not Alone', keeping Doves' 'Kingdom Of Rust' at 2, with Girls Aloud and Eddi Reader unable to make further progress. Could there be a change at number one next week? Well, the main contender would appear to be a forty -year old song by the original, all-male line-up of Fleetwood Mac. 'Man Of The World' is featured in the emotional final scene of the current film The Damned United, all about legendary manager Brian Clough. Certainly, its exposure in the film has helped it climb the chart so rapidly, from 44, to 25 and now, twenty places to number five. Below, songs which appeared to have strong number one potential, after instant top ten entries last week, seem to have stalled. Bat For Lashes (6) and Kevin Rudolf (8) both climb two places with their current hits, but may well have already reached a peak in their popularity. Further down, James Morrison continues to pick up support, lurking at eleven today, while three songs that have been around for a while finally break into the Top 20. The high-pitched urgency of LaRoux climbs nine places to 15 with 'In For The Kill', a definite grower which looks good for the top ten at last, while regular hit makers Britney Spears (17) and the Keri Hilson/Timbaland combination (18) will be disappointed if their efforts don't gather momentum over the next couple of weeks. Radio Newtown Top 20 with Kit Curran, 14-7-09
Chart commentary: No change at the top today, Calvin Harris retains the number one spot for a second week with 'I'm Not Alone', keeping Doves at two with 'Kingdom of Rust'. This blocks the way for Girls Aloud and their attempt to get a third number one single from the album 'Out of Control', as 'Untouchable' climbs just the two places but still a creditable number three. But biggest climber, shooting up sixteen places, is former Fairground Attraction singer Eddi Reader. 'Dragonflies' is the opening track from her lovely new album 'Love Is The Way' and looks possibly to deliver Reader her third number one in three decades on this chart, after Fairground Attraction's 1988 hit 'Perfect' and 1994's 'Joke (I'm Laughing)'. Interesting to see two new entries within the top ten. Bat For Lashes goes in at eight with her Fleetwood Man soundalike 'Daniel', and Kevin Rudolf, fresh from the success of a number one hit in February with 'Let It Rock', has decided to follow it up with an almost identical song. But with a slightly different yet still killer hook, the formula looks like bringing him similar success. White Lies make good progress to lie just outside the Top Ten, while the third new entry at 16 is by Delays. In between albums, and having released some amazing demo songs to their fans on their MySpace page, the Southampton outfit keep interest alive with the mp3 of a track originally given away on a CD with a magazine - their interesting cover of A-Ha's 'The Sun Always Shines on TV'. Having had a number one last year, it's difficult to imagine them repeating the feat with this, given all the strong competition around right now, but it keeps things going until the release of their next album, which, if the demos are anything to go by, could well have at least another chart topper. But for now, Calvin Harris rules the roost, although there could be a major Scottish battle at the top of the chart if Eddi Reader maintains her progess. The Almost Saturday Charts w/k ending 17th Apr 2009
A couple of words on the 1984 charts: Interesting to see FGTH Relax at 41 on the MRIB chart - was the BBC Chart by Gallup then, because I believe Relax never left the official Top 40 throughout January to September, a continuous run record of about 40 weeks? Also, regarding The Price Is Right leaving our screens 'without warning' in 1988 - was that when Leslie Crowther had his car crash? I know he lived for a further ten years or so, but he was so badly injured, he never worked on TV again. :( Matthew Kelly, of course, took over Stars In Their Eyes.

Rewind: The Charts Of 2000 - Mel C, Moloko, & Geri!
I think these days are far better than those days, I think 2000 was a dire year for music. Out of this lot, I like the Moloko track because it's still heard today on Sky Sports News. And I liked everything from All Saints and Appleton. But the rest is AWFUL. Bag It Up has to be one of the worst Spice solo efforts, American Pie Madonna's worst single apart from Hanky Panky, Lene Marlin's song became just irritating, and don't get me started on Daphne and Celeste! As for Mel C, 'Northern Star' the song is beautiful, as were a couple of other tracks from that patchy album, but I always cringed at her attempts to make a sexy song - this one and the even worse 'Here It Comes Again'. As for 'Never Be The Same Again', it sounds SOOO dated now. The scratching, the Beastie Boys YEAAAH sample, the superfluous 'Come On' and I'm afraid LeftEye's rap have not aged well. :(

Sunday Chart Predictions
Don't think he claims to be the best singer in the world. I think you either 'get' him or you don't and that means the whole package - his musicianship, his personality, his deadpan humour. His Twitter updates are superb. :D Hope he obliterates GaGa and is number one for at least a fortnight.

Sunday Chart Predictions
It is just me, or does it sound like a Fleetwood Mac track circa 1987? That's not a criticism btw, it's nice and pleasant. Not sure it's up to the hype I've been hearing, but still okay.

Radio Newtown Top 20 with Kit Curran, 7-4-09
Chart commentary: Not much of a surprise to see last week's highest new entry, 'I'm Not Alone' by Calvin Harris, climb six places to become this week's new number one. It's Harris' third number one in two years, having hit the top with 'Acceptable In The 80s' in April 2007, and in conjunction with Dizzee Rascal and Chome on last summer's 'Dance Wiv Me'. And the trance track just pips the current single by Manchester indie kings Doves, whose atmospheric 'Kingdom of Rust' climbs three places to 2, in a very competitive chart this week. The World In Action theme re-mix actually overtakes the number one single from the last two weeks by the RAH Band, but both were outflanked by this week's big two, dropping to 3 and 4 respectively. Girls Aloud, meanwhile, chalk up another top five hit with 'Untouchable', and could well make that top three next week, but it's hard to see them getting past the two tracks that are by far the most popular around on this chart right now. There's good progress into the Top Ten for Royksopp (6), Jennifer Hudson (9) and Enrique (10). Meanwhile, there are just two new entries within the Top 20 today. Franz Ferdinand get their usual first week slam with 'No You Girls' going in at 17, but expected to make higher progress is Eddi Reader, the former Fairground Attraction singer from Scotland, whose 'Dragonflies' is a new entry at 20. It's the first track from her new album 'Love Is The Way', and written by Boo Hewerdine of 80s/90s band The Bible. Both writer and singer have chart-topping history in this chart, with 'Honey Be Good' having hit the top for The Bible in 1990, Eddi Reader having had number one history from 1988 (when part of Fairground Attraction), while the two combined in 1994 to top the chart with 'Joke (I'm Laughing)'. Not much chart action for the last fifteen years, but this beautiful new song looks set to make up for that, and could well provide the contrast to Calvin's trance anthem that is expected to top the chart for a few weeks otherwise. Radio Newtown Top 20 with Kit Curran, 31-3-2009
Chart commentary: It's a no-change top three this week, as disco production outfit RAH Band retain the number one position with 'Livin' For The Nightlife', keeping the YouTube 'World In Action/Network' mash-up at number two, and Taylor Swift's 'Love Story' at number three. A two-pronged Mancunian attack on the charts is led by Oasis, up two to four with 'Falling Down', but possibly about to be overtaken by Doves and the excellent and atmospheric 'Kingdom of Rust'. But the Top 20 is peppered this week with strong new entries, none more so than Calvin Harris, straight in at seven with 'I'm Not Alone'. Having had number ones on this chart in 2007 ('Acceptable In The Eighties') and last year ('Dance Wiv Me' alongside Dizzee Rascal and Chrome), Calvin is looking for a hatrick, and with a full download and physical release to come over the next two weeks, it looks distinctly possible. Also entering high are Royksopp, with their near-instrumental, at eleven, and Girls Aloud, looking for their own chart-topping hat-trick of singles from 'Out of Control', as 'Untouchable' enters at 13. And at 18, James Morrison leaves Nelly Furtado behind to re-establish his solo credentials with 'Please Don't Stop The Rain'. Jennifer Hudson and Enrique Iglesias have both taken advantage of a number of long-running favourites falling out of contention this week to enter the top twenty with their current releases, but next week looks like being all about Calvin Harris looking to overhaul the Mancunians and topple the RAH Band from the top... Radio Newtown Top Twenty with Kit Curran, 24-3-09
Chart commentary: And so, after a month at number one, Saint Etienne's 'Method of Modern Love' is replaced at number one an even more disco-orientated track: 'Livin For The Nitelife' by the RAH Band, featuring the vocals of the mysterious Susana, has climbed a place to number one, giving the band their first ever number one, a full twenty-four years after their previous chart appearance! It's a long time since 'The Crunch' and 'Clouds Across The Moon', but Richard Anthony Hewson seems to have hit on a zeitgeist of disco revivalism to take this excellent song to the top of the Radio Newtown chart. Just below, climbing to number two, is the YouTube mash-up of the TV theme from World In Action and the legendary words of actor Peter Finch in the film Network, 'Jam For World In Action' confirming the strange synergy between the economic and social situations of today with those of the mid-1970s. Even Chicago, with their classic hit 'If You Leave Me Now' climbing to number ten today, seem to have taken advantage of this mini-70s revival in the Radio Newtown chart, but there's still plenty of new music pushing to top the chart next Tuesday. Taylor Swift's lovely 'Love Story' has climbed into the Top Three today, whilst the highest climber is up nineteen places to six for Oasis. Many people had written off their chart chances on Radio Newtown, after the first single from 'Dig Out Your Soul', 'The Shock of the Lightning' spectacularly bombed. But 'I'm Outta Time' gave them their first RN Top 10 single since 2005, and now the atmospheric 'Falling Down' has steadily grown in popularity until it made a big jump late last week to threaten to provide the Mancunians with their first chart topper since 'Lyla' for years ago. Fellow Mancunians Doves get the highest new entry at 14 with 'Kingdom of Rust', which, while maybe not in the 'Pounding' league of instant classics, is certainly an excellent song, while to complete the 70s feel at 16, Sparks are back with their current one, a light-hearted (as ever) jibe at the former Smiths frontman, with a distinct Glam-Rock stomping feel... which may become the soundtrack of the top 20 throughout the Spring, if the new film 'The Damned United' lives up to its promise... But back to now.. Radio Newtown Top 20 with Kit Curran, 17-3-09
Chart commentary: The top end of the chart continues to be dominated by female vocalists, as Sarah Cracknell and Saint Etienne chalk up a month at the top with 'Method of Modern Love', holding off the mysterious RAH Band, with vocals from Susanna on 'Living For The Nightlife'. Breaking the female dominance, The You-Tube re-mix of the World In Action theme, featuring the legendary 'Network' film rant by actor Peter Finch, leaps up twelve places to number three, pushing Miley Cyrus down to four, while Taylor Swift's uplifting 'Love Story' climbs into the top five. The Comic Relief single 'Barry Islands In The Stream' is the week's highest climber at number seven, but with Red Nose Day now come and gone, is unlikely to make further progress. And so in a slow moving lower half of the chart, David Ordini finally leaves the top ten after two months; 70s AOR kings Chicago take a classic 1976 hit back into the Top 20 at fifteen thanks to instore entertainment programming; and two of the biggest names in music, Keane and Beyoncé, take their current album track singles into the 20 at nineteen and twenty respectively. But the main movement is at the top of the chart - RAH Band, World In Action and Taylor Swift queueing up to depose Saint Etienne, who naturally hope to keep the number one for a fifth week. All to play for... Thanks in advance for all comments. Radio Newtown Top Twenty with Kit Curran, 10-3-09
Chart Commentary: Not much movement at the top end of the chart this week. Despite finishing a lowly 19th in the Buzzjack Song Contest at the weekend, Saint Etienne hang on for a third week at number one with 'Method of Modern Love', easily keeping off Miley Cyrus' 'Fly On The Wall', which nevertheless has been a tremendous success for the Hannah Montana star, climbing today to number two. Alesha Dixon drops to three, and Kelly Clarkson surprisingly stalls at four, with 'My Life Would Suck Without You' now seemingly unable to repeat the chart topping feats of 'Since U Been Gone' three years ago. Good progress has been made by RAH Band and Susanna, whose atmospheric 'Living For The Nitelife' has gone to the top five today, and could well topple Saint Etienne next week. There's also success for Emo band Elliot Minor, whose powerish ballad 'Discover (Why The Love Hurts)' has very quickly gone from a debut hit to a top ten smash at number ten. Country star Taylor Swift also does well to climb to eleven. This week's highest new entry is one of those strange pieces of art emanating from the internet. Taking the instrumental theme from the classic 70s and 80s ITV investigative programme 'World In Action' and giving it a vital 21st century makeover, and then adding the strangely appropriate words of Peter Finch's Howard Beale character in the film 'Network', from his 'I'm as mad as hell...' speech, has created a winner, as 'Jam For World In Action' goes straight in at 15. Just behind it, those cheeky Welsh rappers Goldie Lookin' Chain are using the exposure of Channel 4 sports programme 'Destination 2012' to take 'By Any Means Necessary' straight into the top twenty, and another song that's been around for a while, 'To Lose My Life' by White Lies, finally cracks the Top 20 due to continued radio airplay and exposure. Radio Newtown Top 20 with Kit Curran, 3-3-09
Chart Commentary: No surprises at the top of the chart this week, Saint Etienne hold on for a second week at the top with 'Method of Modern Love' and Alesha Dixon stays at two with 'Breathe Slow'. Chart watchers are tipping the Saint Etienne single to stay at the top for a couple of more weeks at least, due to Newtown Regional Television taking the much-maligned Buzzjack Song Contest final for the first time, a competition for which Sarah Cracknell's band has qualified, representing Kopecka. But as Sarah celebrates, there's bragging rights too for Miley Cyrus, whose 'Fly On The Wall' crawls into the top three, and Kelly Clarkson, who speeds up to number five today with 'My Life Would Suck Without You'. David Ordini's retro football theme heads for an amazing two months inside the top 20, while going top ten today are The RAH Band and Snow Patrol. In the lower half of the twenty, Shontelle's RnB soother 'T-Shirt' climbs to eleven, while an 80s style piece of electronica by Filthy Dukes climbs ten places to fourteen. Highest new entry, following hot on the heels of Busted and McFly, Elliot Minor are another band of Brits who want to sound as American as possible, but musically making a far better fist of things than their predecessors with the unusual 'Discover (Why The Love Hurts), and possibly set to become the next big thing? There's a new entry at 16 for the latest Comic Relief effort, and Taylor Swift takes country on a rare outing into the Radio Newtown Top 20 with 'Love Story'. Yep, because the radio stations criminally ignore Saint Eitenne, you can bet if this were by Kylie it would never have been off the radio! The song is what Kylie would sound like if she had a good voice. ;) Thanks for commenting

Radio Newtown Top 20 with Kit Curran, 24-2-09
And that's even before we get to the songs! Chart commentary. She never managed it as part of her girl-band, but with her second solo single, Alesha Dixon felt sure of reaching number one in the Radio Newtown chart with 'Breathe Slow'. She fought a tight battle all week with St Etienne and their Kylie-esque 'Method of Modern Love', but from being behind all week, a flutter of Sarah Cracknell's eyelashes and the 20-year veterans were eventually able to overhaul their rival, and the divine Sarah is finally the Queen of the Radio Newton Top 20! Not that we're obsessed in any way here at Radio Newtown... Tina Dico falls to three and last week's chart topper from Kevin Rudolf and Lil Wayne falls to four. But it's celebration time for geeky Gary Go, who chalks up a top five hit with his debut 'Wonderful', far outstripping the current performance of the band he's going to be supporting on tour, Take That, whose new single surprisingly hasn't even cracked the Top Ten. The biggest climber in the twenty is Miley Cyrus, who takes 'Fly On The Wall' up fourteen places to six. Miley has been hovering around the lower half of the Top 30 on several occasions but this seems to be the single to finally get her the breakthrough in the Radio Newtown chart, and it could well go top three next week. Amy Studt seems to have been usurped by the new teen wonder, but at least she is able to celebrate a Top Ten hit as well tonight, 'Nice Boys' settling nicely at 7. Three brand new entries in the 20. Kelly Clarkson might have wondered if she'd reached a peak on this chart when the marvellous 'Since U Been Gone' got to number one in 2005. Maybe 'My Life Would Suck Without You' still can't hope to match that incomparable track, but 13 is a strong debut, and it looks sure fire top ten. The RAH Band would have been glad of any hit in the last 25 years, 'Clouds Across The Room' and 'The Crunch' having been the only titles of theirs to have troubled the charts, both over two decades ago. But a new sound featuring the voice of the mysterious Susanna, with a smooth disco sound not dissimilar to that which is helping St Etienne right now, has brought them back to the Top 20 at 16, with more success surely around the corner. And Snow Patrol are back with another epic, entering at 17 with 'If There's A Rocket..', which should be battling at the very top in a couple of weeks. With Katy Perry and a rejuvinated, award winning Elbow climbing into the Top 20, the charts are becoming lively again, This week's chart: http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/HVNLP69CDSE.JPGhttp://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/ASYLUM8CD.JPGhttp://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii35/Merlo2001/tina.jpghttp://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/1796243.JPGhttp://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/GARYGO.JPG 1 (5) Method of Modern Love - Saint Etienne (New number one) 2 (4) Breathe Slow - Alesha Dixon 3 (2) Warm Sand – Tina Dico 4 (1) Let It Rock- Kevin Rudolf feat Lil Wayne 5 (9) Wonderful – Gary Go 6 (20) Fly On The Wall – Miley Cyrus 7 (15) Nice Boys – Amy Studt 8 (7) La Soirée - David Ordini 9 (6) Get On Your Boots - U2 10 (3) All You Need Is Love – Beatles 11 (8) The Fear- Lily Allen 12 (10) An Eluardian Instance – Of Montreal 13 (NEW) My Life Would Suck Without You - Kelly Clarkson 14 (16) Shining Light - Annie Lennox 15 (11) Up All Night- Take That 16 (NEW) Living For The Nitelife - RAH Band ft Susanna 17 (NEW) If There's a Rocket, Tie Me To It – Snow Patrol 18 (12) We Walk – Ting Tings 19 (23) Thinking of You - Katy Perry 20 (44) One Day Like This – Elbow New number one! oi0OvJkLiww In at number sixteen. Radio Newtown Top 20 with Kit Curran - 17-2-09
Chart commentary. It's a third week at the top for Kevin Rudolf and Lil Wayne with 'Let It Rock', but the competition to take over is hotting up below them. Has Danish songstress Tina Dico run out of momentum? Two weeks ago, when 'Warm Sand' went up twenty five places to five, it looked a sure fire bet to get to the top, but progress has slowed, and it climbs one place today to number two - still a massive hit, as is The Beatles' unexpected re-entry, 'All You Need Is Love', which climbs to three today as a result of tv exposure in the Granada region with a mass local TV singalong on Valentine's Day. But neither is expected to top the charts next week, as the main battle would seem to be between two new songs from established acts. Having had her first big success since leaving Mystique with 'The Boy Does Nothing', Alesha Dixon seems to have found an even better song in 'Breathe Slow', which climbs up nine places to four this week. But just behind it, the wonderful St Etienne are up eleven to 5 with 'Method of Modern Love'. It's difficult to know if fans cheered or groaned when they first saw the title of this release - surely not a Hall and Oates cover from the divine Sarah and her friends? No, it's a delicious piece of smooth disco of which Kylie would be proud... and sung as only Miss Cracknell can. So could this be the song to give St Etienne their first Radio Newtown number one? It ought to be a certainty, but Alesha's song is a definite grower, and could pip it to the post. Lower down the top ten, U2 miss the top five, but Gary Go makes good progress. In the lower half of the twenty, Take That look unlikely to match the success of 'Greatest Day' as 'Up All Night' climbs but to a positively lowly for them number twelve... Amy Studt comes back with 'Nice Boys' at 15 - with memories of a number one in this chart just six years ago - and Morrissey returns with a song that, disappointingly, is not a declaration of love for an American socialite, but a return to Smiths glory days to please his old fans. And Miley Cyrus creeps into the Top 20 with a song that's desperately trying to be 'Rock Lobster' by the B-52s. Great! This week's chart: http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/1796243.JPGhttp://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii35/Merlo2001/tina.jpghttp://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii35/Merlo2001/beatles.jpghttp://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/ASYLUM8CD.JPGhttp://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/HVNLP69CDSE.JPG 1 (1) Let It Rock - Kevin Rudolf ft Lil' Wayne (Third week) 2 (3) Warm Sand - Tina Dico 3 (10) All You Need Is Love – Beatles 4 (13) Breathe Slow- Alesha Dixon 5 (16) Method of Modern Love – St Etienne 6 (7) Get on Your Boots – U2 7 (5) La Soireé – David Ordini 8 (2) The Fear - Lily Allen 9 (15) Wonderful - Gary Go 10 (4) An Eluardian Instance – Of Montreal 11 (23) Up All Night- Take That 12 (8) We Walk – Ting Tings 13 (6) The Loving Kind - Girls Aloud 14 (11) Sunshine - Keane 15 (26) Nice Boys- Amy Studt 16 (17) Shining Light - Annie Lennox 17 (14) Best of Me – Daniel Powter 18 (9) Circus – Britney Spears 19 (NEW) I Throw My Arms Around Paris - Morrissey 20 (27) Fly On The Wall – Miley Cyrus

Radio Newtown Top 20 with Kit Curran, 10-2-09
Chart commentary. Kevin Rudolf and Lil Wayne get their second week at number one this week with the infectious 'Let It Rock', just about holding off Lily Allen's take on modern celebrity 'The Fear', still at number 2, and Tina Dico's beautiful 'Warm Sand', which climbs two places to 3.Of Montreal drop a place to 4, while David Ordini's retro football number climbs back into the top five due to the continued fascination with 1970s soccer repeats on ITV4. U2 and Ting Tings climb into the Top Ten without showing number one potential, but the Beatles climb to 10 with 'All You Need Is Love', the song that is sweeping the north west of England as a result of local tv promotion. Of the high climbers into the 20, Alesha Dixon at 13 gets a quick follow-up to her recent quirky hit; the wonderfully geeky Gary Go climbs to 15; and at 16, St Etienne shock everyone that their new single is not a cover of a dodgy mid-80s hit by Hall and Oates, but another beautifully crafted piece of art from Metroland... An surprisingly pleasant offering from ex-Eurythmic Annie Lennox enters at 17, but with the Beatles being the complete random factor, the three-way chart battle at the top that one would expect from the Valetines' week chart could be overshadowed, as the most famous band of all come up on the rails to trump the lot of them.
