  1. Hee hee. Radio Newtown doesn't actually exist - it was a fictional radio station on the TV Series 'The Kit Curran Radio Show' during the 1980s (because I'm old and remember the mid 1980s, ha ha!) The Kit Curran character was played by that fine Scottish actor Denis Lawson, I was amazed to receive a PM from someone who seemed to think I was actually Denis Lawson, I wish I had half his money, good looks and charisma! The chart is compiled pretty much by what I happen to like at the time, though often positions are decided by number of plays on my IPod. (Am loving the Christmas songs at the mo, so to separate them, I found that Gabriella, Helene, Wombats and Johnny Mathis was the descending order of plays since I put them on last week). I did used to present a Top 20 chart show on Hospital Radio until about 18 months or so ago, which was unique - it was the only chart compiled completely at random by rolling dice... :D Anything can turn up in the Radio Newtown chart... it's mainly songs that are out at the moment (though not just English language ones, I have had 2 German and 1 South American number ones this year), but I do have a fair bit of retro, though not randomly so... there's usually a reason why a retro track turns up, such as the recent number one by Can: although it was made in 1976, and re-released in 2006, I'd never heard it before until it turned up in a link on YouTube for another vid I was watching, and I liked the song so much, I couldn't stop listening to it. Anyway, glad you're enjoying the chart, there's a tense battle for the Christmas number one, and the X-Factor winner will be nowhere to be seen! (Sorry, I really don't like Leonard Cohen's music). Stay tuned for the Top 20 of the Year, which will be mainly based on IPod plays... ;)
  2. Chart commentary: An exciting chart, the penultimate one before Christmas, sees Take That cling on to their number one spot with 'Greatest Day'. So, only one more week to hold on to become the official Radio Newtown Christmas Number One. But it's a very big ask, as a clutch of Christmas-related records close in on the coveted honour. Gabriella Cilmi climbs one place to number two with 'Warm This Winter', helped by another TV advertising campaign, a familiar route to chart success used recently by Steph and also The Bellamy Brothers. Meanwhile, there are two new entries within the top five. German Schlager-musik star Helene Fischer was shocked not to make the Top 20 in the autumn with 'Mal ganz erlich', after two number ones during 2008, but she bids for the hat-trick again with 'Heilige Nacht', a German language version of the Christmas traditional 'O Holy Night'. Straight in at number three, she would be favourite for the Christmas chart-topper were it not for the phenomenon that is 'Is This Christmas?' by Liverpool indie band The Wombats. Having made a mark with releases such as 'Let's Dance To Joy Division', their new ode to the misery of a British Christmas seems to have struck a chord, enough to enter the chart at five today. Meanwhile, yet more contenders for the Christmas chart topper appear in the form of Leona Lewis' download hit 'Run', climbing nine places to number four today, and a thirty-year old Christmas standard from Johnny Mathis: 'When A Child Is Born' shoots up fourteen places to six. The Christmas music boom sees a big fall for Buzzjack Song Contest winner Lenka (2 to 8) and blocks the top ten ambitions of Oasis (12) and Wiley (13) in today's chart. Meanwhile, King of Prussia look unlikely to match their chart-topping feat of the autumn, as 'Shades of Hippiedom' climbs only to 15 today. Keane are happy to chalk up another Top 20 hit, while yet more Christmas music, old and new, muscles into the lower part of the Top 20. A version of 'Little Drummer Boy' by Sir Terry Wogan and Aled Jones enters at 17, while yet another outing for Mariah Carey's Christmas party favourite brings her back into the Top 20. There's no sign of the current release by last year's Christmas chart topper Katie Melua, or of the much vaunted 'X-Factor' winner... but can these be discounted when looking to predict the Christmas number one... well, probably. It looks like Gabriella. Or Helene. Or the Wombat boys. Maybe Leona. Possibly dear old Johnny. Or perhaps Take That will extend their stranglehold on the top spot and score their first seasonal chart topper, possibly the only singles accolade that has so far eluded them All will be revealed in seven days time... 3. And as the battle to be Christmas number one in the Radio Newtown Top 20 hots up, let's have a look at some of the contenders who look set to enter the charts next week in the hope of getting seven days' start in the race. German Schlager-musik singing beauty Helene Fischer has already had three number ones in the chart, including the summer's Lass mich in dein Leben, which made it all the more surpising during the autumn, when Mal ganz erlich stalled at No 21. But in time for the festive season, she releases 'Heilige Nacht' ('Holy Night'), which shows some of the true meaning of Christmas, and already looks like a possible challenger as early as Sunday. 9ZJsj7qX4V0 In stark contrast, a more traditional British Christmas is offered by Liverpool band The Wombats, who bring us 'Is This Christmas?'. Although many people may think this band are nothing more than a Scouse McFly with street-cred, there's no denying that this latest release is the nearest Christmas 2008 is going to get to a Slade-type rabble rouser! QQAmwRM-vXU Cult American band King of Prussia are already hovering under the Top 20 with 'Shades of Hippiedom', and look set to make a big climb on Sunday. They were right on cue during the Autumn, 'Misadventures of the Campaign Kids' topping the chart for five weeks at the height of the US Presidential Election campaign. Their Christmas chart contender is in the same distinctive style, but lack of a Christmas edge may be a disadvantage in this battle. z_H6O9F2AHk With another raft of releases expected in Christmas week itself, these three contenders may well be overtaken themselves, and of course, they have to challenge the early runners Take That, Lenka and Gabriella Cilmi. It does promise, though, to be an exciting battle, in a chart that has rarely seen the much vaunted 'X Factor Winner' dominate proceedings, unlike the listings of some other, inferior radio stations we could mention... :P
  4. This looks a lot of fun... almost makes me want to form a country and enter a song myself in January. Particularly liked the build-up to 7pm when the semi-final results were announced live. Maybe next time you get Graham Norton to do this? B) Some good songs are hiding in these threads. I *loved* the October, or was it November winner from Lenka, which is now charting high in my Radio Newtown Top 20, and a possible Christmas number one. Like many have noted, though, the standard this month isn't quite as high, though I love the idea of Ra ra rasputin being in the final! You do know that guy on stage isn't really singing don't you? :P Radio Newtown will now study its budget and decide whether we can afford to stage a national final and send a contestant to BSC XIII....
  5. Chart commentary: With only three more charts to go till Christmas, Take That are battling manfully to keep hold of the top spot until then with 'Greatest Day'. With huge potential to be Christmas number one, the current hit from the Manchester quartet only has to hold on for two more weeks in order to claim the honour, denied them on two memorable occasions, when 'Rule The World' missed out last year, and the infamous occasion in 1993 when the public collectively judged Mark Owen's 'Babe' to be musically inferior to Mr. Blobby. But some of the other contenders for Christmas number one are already making their presence felt in the higher reaches. Recent Buzzjack Song Contest winner Lenka climbs two places to number two with her jolly number, perfect for the carefree spirit of the season, while more specifically geared to Christmas is Gabriella Cilmi's Co-Op Advert soundtrack song 'Warm This Winter'. This cover of a Connie Francis track climbs nine places to number three today. The Killers at last get a top five place, while borrowing from O-Zone seems to have helped TI and Rihanna as they eventually climb into the top ten. Further down the chart, as 'Forgive Me' drops out, 'Run' by Leona Lewis is the highest new entry at thirteen, while Oasis' decision to finally go all out as a Beatles tribute act seems to be bringing some reward, as 'I'm Outta Time', up to 14, looks set to become their biggest hit in three years. The excellent vocalist Daniel Merriweather must be wondering when he will get major credit on a chart hit, having played second fiddle to Mark Ronson on his number one 'Stop Me', he now backs up the rapping skills of Londoner Wiley in the chart at seventeen... and what threatens to be the first of many Christmas interlopers sees Johnny Mathis croon his way to number twenty. Now, only two more charts to Christmas - who will be in for Christmas number one? It's anyone's guess, but Radio Newtown will be back with a look at the main contenders yet to enter the top twenty later in the week. This week's chart: http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/1787445.JPGhttp://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii35/Merlo2001/tmpphpduYi0t.jpghttp://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii35/Merlo2001/cilmi.jpghttp://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii35/Merlo2001/tmpphpHg3vf5.jpghttp://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/1789799.JPG 1 (1) Greatest Day - Take That (Third week) 2 (4) The Show - Lenka 3 (12) Warm This Winter – Gabriella Cilmi 4 (3) I Want More- Can 5 (7) Human – Killers 6 (5) Make You Feel My Love – Adele 7 (2) Let Your Love Flow – Bellamy Brothers 8 (9) Use Somebody - Kings of Leon 9 (6) Stop Space Return - Crazy P 10 (18) Live Your Life – TI feat Rihanna 11 (10) Dream Cars- Neon Neon 12 (8) If He Should Ever Leave You – Tom Jones 13 (NEW) Run - Leona Lewis 14 (25) I'm Outta Time - Oasis 15 (15) The Boy Does Nothing- Alesha Dixon 16 (11) The Promise - Girls Aloud 17 (22) Cash In My Pocket – Wiley ft Daniel Merriweather 18 (14) Infinity 2008 – Guru Josh Project 19 (13) Womanizer - Britney Spears 20 (NEW) When A Child Is Born – Johnny Mathis
  6. Chart commentary: No surprise at the top of the chart, Take That stay at number one for the second week running with 'Greatest Day'. Two 1970s tracks swap places in the top three, the Bellamy Brothers climbing back to number two, while Can's former chart topper drops to number three. Adele finally gets a top five placing with a song nearly a year old, but the big shock is the huge seventeen place climb by the previously unknown Lenka, whose song 'The Show' won the recent Buzzjack Song Contest. Such a high climb a relatively slow moving chart at the moment could put the star from Eledan in prime position to take over from Take That next week. The Killers, Kings of Leon and Neon Neon enter the top ten, but another big climber into the top twenty comes in the form of a Christmas-related advertising track from Gabriella Cilmi, who goes up to number twelve with 'Warm This Winter'. With a raft of Christmas related songs predicted to chart over the next few weeks, the Aussie teenager is stealing a march on her rivals and hopes to be already in place as the battle for Christmas number one hots up. 7. Thanks for this, I got confused when I put the name into YouTube and got a hyperactive American TV Evangelist! I thought 'these titles don't sound like religious songs' but with them Americans, you can never be too sure... Hallelujah!

That computer technology is soooo funny! The sound of the printer is just sooo eighties  EDIT: Just seen part two... 'This marks a harder, rockier edge to their music.... they are SHAKATAK!' PMSL
  9.     Actually, I don't mind Reggie on his own. I quite enjoyed the chart show during the summer when Fearne wasn't there, but together they're like the two naughty and annoying kids at the back of the class who need to be split up. Although not to the extent of Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand.. (They're secondary school and Fearne and Reggie are primary school...)
  10. Who is Chris Hill and why was he so popular in the 1970s?
  11. Well it's the best children's song EVER. And it was bought for me as a Christmas present when I was 8! Lovely song.

I've only been doing my Buzzjack chart since the summer. I was, though, on hospital radio for many years and introduced a unique Top 20 show, the ONLY chart compiled completely at random by rolling dice... I chose all 20 contenders (a mixture of current hits, retro and odd leftfield tracks, pretty much like my Buzzjack chart) and rolled percentile dice scores for them all, with those at the top end getting extra rolls so you didn't have chart runs like 20-1-17-2... I've got all the charts (going back to the late 90s) in books, so I'll consult to find my one hit wonders. As for my Buzzjack chart, a likely one hit wonder is 'Pasos Al Costado' by Turf. WSbxALVMN7E I'm very much into South American soccer, and this tune forms the basis of a regular crowd chant in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay etc.. I had it go straight in at number one, and there for five weeks, but as none of their other songs has the same resonance, I don't expect them ever to chart again...
  13. Chart commentary:After two weeks of the charts being dominated by the sounds of the seventies, we're back in the 21st Century again as the latest Take That epic unsurprisingly enters the chart at number one, only the second song this year to do so following Turf's 'Pasos Al Costado'. With Gary Barlow the master of uplifting, autumnal anthems, 'Greatest Day' succeeds where 'Rule The World' failed, far outstripping the collection of retro and retro-sounding tracks that were holding a vice-like grip on the top three. Can, Bellamy Brothers and Crazy P all fall a place, with Tom Jones and his Northern Soul ballad completing the top five. Elsewhere in a chart of surprisingly little movement, Adele makes great progress with more airplay, and Neon Neon and Kidz In The Hall make their first appearances in the Top 20. (Although US rappers Kidz are glad of the assistance from London hitmaker Estelle on their track). A three-year old track by Gorillaz, a former number one no less, makes a re-appearance due to being featured as backing music on 'Show de Goles' webcasts from Latin American sports broadcaster TyC. 19. Chart commentary: Retro continues to rule the Radio Newton chart this week. Country boys the Bellamy Brothers looked all set to take over the number one spot this week, until a slowdown in exposure of the Barclaycard advert towards weekend allowed Can to retain their grip on the top with 'I Want More'. 'Let Your Love Flow' does climb to number two, overtaking another retro-style hit from Crazy P, which nevertheless goes top three, and could still get the dance outfit a surprise chart topper. And yet more. Welsh crooner Tom Jones has gone for a Northern Soul feel for his new single, and it's certainly finding favour with Radio Newtown, taking him up to number seven as highest climber with 'If He Should Ever Leave You'. For fans of today's stars, good to see Snow Patrol finally make it to the Top Ten with their recent release, and Adele looks set to make it too with a song that's been growing for ages. A similar story for Duffy with yet another hit from Rockferry getting to nineteen, while new material from The Killers and Kings of Leon makes a fair impact at numbers 17 and 18 respectively. And a surprise hit for Alesha Dixon gets in at number 20. Her previous band Mis-Teeq never got very far in this particular chart, with one critic likening the song 'Scandalous' to an angry PC flashing up errors with Windows. But it goes to show the value of a distinctive and catchy song that 'The Boy Does Nothing' can chart, despite previous material having held little regard. You never know what's going to happen on the Radio Newtown chart! 20. Thanks. Lovin the pic I found of Bellamy Brothers, ha ha! Just the kind of voters John McCain was looking for... but he obviously didn't find them...
  21. Big up for Bellamy Brothers at 29, I'm lovin that advert. Always seems to be on a Sunday morning. I'd defy anyone not to download it, even if you don't like country, which I don't, really...
  22. Chart commentary - An untried Democrat is elected US President on a wave of hope after eight years of unpopular Republican rule. In Britain, a beleaguered Labour government battles against financial crisis. In sport, a charismatic young Briton wins the Formula 1 world championship. Yes, you could be forgiven for thinking the world had slipped back to 1976. And in the top 20 this week, maybe it has! For an obscure single by a German experimental rock band has toppled reality tv darlings Girls Aloud to take the number one spot. Orignally recorded in 1976, 'I Want More' by Can inexplicably flew under the Radio Newtown radar on its single re-issue in 2006, but two years later, thanks to a surfing-style YouTube video, the song has flown up the charts within four weeks to get to the top spot. And that's not all for 70s fans. 'Let Your Love Flow', a country number from 76 by the Bellamy Brothers, shoots into the top five thanks to a bizarre, high-budget tv advert featuring an office worker taking a water slide home from work. Fans of the 80s sound are not forgotten though. Anglo-Amercan outfit Crazy P (the official name of whom we cannot print) may be bang upto date, but there is a definite 80s tinge to their current single, 'Stop Space Return', which climbs to number 4 and looks set to battle the two 76-hits at the top next week. Such a reliance on retro suggests that the current crop of new releases may not be up to the mark. Certainly, Beyonce's number thirteen position with her new hit is a major surprise, and the only other newcomers to the Top 20 are slow growing October releases from Snow Patrol and Adele. But this looks set to be a pre-Christmas lull, as the big guns of modern music such as Take That look for chart positions over forthcoming weeks... 23. Not many of these songs have dated, but this one definitely has. The scratching, the Beastie Boys sample and the random 'come on's, it just sounds so naff. I reckon Mel C got it so wrong when attempting to sing sexy songs. The subject matter of the lyric is pretty powerful, so why ruin it with the Beastie Boys Roland Rat impressions? YYYEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHH
  24. 21??!! I kept saying at the time, it was the best 'track' released in the 2000s up to that point, and I can't think of one to beat it yet. It has everything. A brilliant sample from the Chi-Lites (which introduced me to their brilliant music). A gorgeous vocal performance by Beyoncé. An inspired rap from Jay Z (as well as his brilliant announcements at the start, kinda saying 'listen to this, this is something special!'. An a great video. This should be number one. Pure class.
  25. Is there a glitch, there seem to be two number 16s? (Sugababes and Britney) Loving the countdown, though
