Chart commentary - It's a third week at the top for Girls Aloud, easily holding on to the number one position with 'The Promise'. The delay in the physical release of 'Forgive Me' possibly denies Leona Lewis a better chance of toppling the girls, as her single climbs to number two, and just behind, retro track 'I Want More' by Can climbs three places to number three, threatening the number one position themselves. Can are hoping to become the third German act, after Helene Fischer and Luetzenkirchen, to top the chart within six months, and at this stage look favourites to do so. But strong contenders come from Guru Josh, climbing to six with his updated version of 'Infinity', and DJ Ironik, whose Elton John sampling track progresses as high as the top ten. But the retro feel of the chart continues with two new entries. At eleven, Nottingham dance/trance outfit Crazy P**** are in from nowhere with their 80s tinged title track from their new album, 'Stop Space Return', which will have clubbers dancing as if it's 1985... but from even further back, 1976, The Bellamy Brothers appear at 16, thanks to the epic new Barclaycard TV commercial. Meanwhile, Katy Perry follows up 'I Kissed A Girl' and Alicia Keys and Jack White ride on the James Bond wave, but will either have the momentum to carry them into the top five this time around? And there's no sign of Simon Cowell's charity Mariah Carey cover, possibly due to a strong resistance to such a bland song from Radio Newtown listeners... I expected GA to top this, TBH, as they're getting so many number ones this week, and I expect the same next Saturday, even if Britney gets her points back.

Chart commentary - No surprises at the top this week, as Girls Aloud get a second week at number one with 'The Promise'. After just three weeks in the chart, it already looks like challenging Duffy's 'Mercy', Madonna and Justin's '4 Minutes' and Turf's 'Pasos Al Costado' as the most popular song of the year, and there don't seem to be too many challengers stepping up in the next couple of weeks. Indeed, another of the top songs of the year, 'Misadventures of the Campaign Kids' by King of Prussia, suggests that it might have had the staying power to stay at the top until Election Day had it not been for the Girls Aloud-mania: they stay at two. Leona Lewis gets a top three placing for 'Forgive Me' ahead of its physical release, while Razorlight, also out on Monday, line up behind at number four. With the funky Can making good progress to number six, the rest of the big chart news this week comes outside the Top Ten. Nearly twenty years after it was 'time for the Guru', it's time for him again, Guru Josh hammering up eighteen places to twelve with his 2008 version of 'Infinity'. And three new entries in the 20. Jane Ledsom's song is a football chant inspired rallying call to help beleaguered Luton Town FC - Eric Morecambe would be proud - and is the highest new entry. Just behind, at 17, Katie Melua protegé Andrea McEwan ponders the modern age of communication in 'Candle In A Chatroom', while at 18, DJ Ironik samples Elton John and possibly delights and horrifies equally with 'Tiny Dancer'. Chart Commentary: The much anticipated chart battle turned into more of a procession, as Girls Aloud do this week what Leon Jackson couldn't last - turn a much publicized X-Factor performance into enough momentum to easily claim the number one spot. Single 'The Promise' entered the chart last week at five, and climbs four places today to get the girls another number one, to go with such Radio Newtown chart toppers as 'Sound of the Underground' and 'Wake Me Up'. Despite the endorsement of Gen Colin Powell, King of Prussia failed to hold the top spot for another week with 'Misadventures of the Campaign Kids', though a five week run for a debut hit is still a remarkable achievement. Sugababes were expected to challenge GA for the top spot, but have to settle instead for number three this week, after a late drop in interest in the wake of the Girls Aloud-mania. In their own private 'X Factor winners' battle, Leona managed to overhaul Leon, but still remains stuck at four. Some bizarre 'new' entries this week... high climbing hits by previously unknown Oppo (10) and Rockits (13) are as a result of their being featured in cult blog Pure Pop, whilst the highest climbing hit in the twenty, Can's 'I Want More' (which moves from 26 to 14) is a powerful slice of seventies funk that came out of nowhere as a randomly suggested YouTube link for Radio Newtown's Top DJ... 90s dance act Sash! make a re-appearance at number 20. Chart commentary: It's a fifth week at number one in the Radio Newtown charts for American underground band King of Prussia, and their ode to the democratic process, 'Misadventures of the Campaign Kids'. The guys and girls from Georgia now have to hold on for another three weeks to become the official American election day number one! But the chances of that are looking extremely slim as a queue of contenders line up to depose them. King of Prussia hold off X Factor champion Leon Jackson, who swaps places with namesake Michael to get to number two with 'Don't Call This Love'. Possibly a better performance on this weekend's X-Factor show may have got him the number one spot, a clanger he may live to regret, as 2006 winner Leona Lewis threatens to overtake him with 'Forgive Me', up four places to four. But the real chart battle looks to be happening a little lower, as next week promises the fiercest girl band battle since the Spice Girls and All Saints were pulling each other's hair going on for ten years ago. Hot favourite for next week's number one are Girls Aloud, who get the highest new entry with their retro tinged single 'The Promise', straight in at number five. The fact that this group are in the running for another chart topper nearly six years after their first is impressive enough, but a band whose first hit was a full two years before that - albeit with a different line-up - threaten to steal their thunder: Sugababes have the biggest climber, shooting a full twenty-one places to six with 'Girls'. That these songs will probably leapfrog King of Prussia to be the top two next week is highly probable, but in which order? This will be the big issue of the week... Further down the chart, a little surprise that Kaiser Chiefs enter as low as fifteen, but at least that is better than Oasis, who have failed to make the Top 20 at all with their current song. Climbing into the twenty at 18 is Daniel Powter, a chart topper three years ago, who has made steady progress to return to the chart's upper echelons with a song that sounds as though it was left on a bus by Dan Gillespie-Sells of the Feeling... but charming enough to outdo that band's current effort, 'Without You', which has sunk without trace having grazed the unpublished chart at 20 two weeks ago. Just outside the top 20, a clutch of retro songs popularised by a cult music blog threaten to shake up the big names in weeks to come. CHOOOON! What a glorious summer that was, endless days of hot sunny weather, the odd crunching thunderstorm to break it all up, then more sun sun sun... the Tories were out of Downing Street, I went to college for a year and had the time of my life, and delicious music such as this was filling the airwaves... Between there and here... where did it all go wrong?! :(

One of the best songs of all time. I never got it to number one on our chart when we were 11 though (there were three of us arguing over the positions every bloody Tuesday, ha ha ha. Oh yeah, charts on a Tuesday... the kids of today don't know what they missed!)

Quite simply one of the best threads of all time! We did personal charts when I was at school, though we ended up having the most bizarre number ones by entirely made-up artists, singing re-worked versions of popular hits of the time... such as top 1980s band 'The Masochist Band' with such top hits as 'Beat Me Up Before You Go Go', 'Agony' (Agadoo) and 'King of Pain' (The Police). We even pre-empted the 2000s trend of entering high and falling quickly, as we soon got bored of songs when we were 11. :P Ha ha, you're a year older than me (I started secondary school in 1984!) and I thought I was the oldest person on this forum! :dance: The old personal charts thing is a good game, I revived it for a while when I was presenting on hospital radio. But this is an absolute work of art that I couldn't possibly hope to equal. I did charts between 84 and 88 (school), 99 to 2006 (hospital radio weekly chart, entirely made up by me) but to keep it all going for twenty five years continuously, absolute genius! PS: If you were 12 in 1984, you should remember who the original Kit Curran was... :lol:

Chart Commentary: The first chart published for two weeks due to technical problems, but still no change at the very top, King of Prussia getting a fourth week at number one with 'Misadventures of the Campaign Kids', three of those keeping Michael Jackson's retro track 'We're Almost There' in second. But there's big movement below the top two to suggest the possibility of some exciting chart action next week. 2007 X Factor Winner Leon Jackson entered last week's unpublished chart at nine with his new song 'Don't Call This Love', which in some circles has been likened to an early 1970s Philadelphia soul track. This week the song jumps six places to number three, and a strong contender for number one next week. But he could be beaten by his X Factor predecessor Leona Lewis, whose 'Forgive Me' moves strongly into the top ten at eight. And Iglu and Hartley (10) and the highest climbing excellent new song from Razorlight (11) also make good progress. Pink has the highest new entry at 16, but there's no place in the Top 20 yet for Oasis, and Britney Spears limps in at a lowly 19. But watch out for a raft of new entries next week to shake the chart up, as King of Prussia campaign for more weeks at the top... Chart Commentary: A late chart for this week, but no change at number one, with King of Prussia remaining on top with 'Misadventures of the Campaign Kids'. Moving up to number two is an old track by Michael Jackson, 'We're Almost There', and maybe he is, except that being a fair distance from King of Prussia in terms of units, he will have his work cut out to replace the band from Georgia next week. Katy Perry and Eric Prydz both drop a place, the big winners in the top ten are golden oldie Paul Weller (up six to number five) and St Etienne (up eight to six). Very much of today, Jay Z and his rap and RnB cohorts get the highest new entry at fifteen, but greater movement is expected in next weeks chart. Will Young may have stalled at number seven, but the new, almost Philadelphia soul tinged single from X Factor winner Leon Jackson could become a surprise contender to keep reality stars at the forefront of the chart battle. Chart Commentary: While others rave about Kings of Leon, a different King tops the Radio Newtown chart today, after a swift ascent to the summit. In its fourth week of chart action, 'Misadventures of the Campaign Kids' by King of Prussia is the new number one, toppling Katy Perry's 'I Kissed A Girl' after just one week. The self-styled band of 'method actors', from Georgia, in the USA have hit the top with a topical number, just as the American Presidential Election campaign gets into gear. As the machinations of Obama, McCain, Palin and the rest continue to dominate the airwaves, a long run at the top for King Of Prussia's alternative take on the system looks likely, with Eric Prydz's 'Pjanoo' at number three unlikely to have the momentum to carry it to the top. However, a little-known track from King of Pop Michael Jackson, 'We're Almost There' sweeps up twelve places to number four, and could be an outside bet for the top. While PussyCat Dolls and Duffy make the Top Ten, just outside it, Paul Weller has a big climb with his pleasing current single 'All I Wanna Do' (not a cover version of the Sheryl Crow hit). Meanwhile, the delicious voice of Sarah Cracknell comes back to the Top 20, with 'Burnt Out Car' by Saint Etienne the highest new entry at 14. With a 'best of' retrospective out soon, the new dance re-mix of an old song is keeping fans happy and looks set for a top ten placing next week. But for now, it's all about King of Prussia! Chart Commentary: And so after a month of German heavy drinking and minimalist dance, our bi-curious friend Katy Perry at last leapfrogs both Luetzenkirchen and Royworld to get to number one in the Radio Newtown chart with 'I Kissed A Girl'. It's particularly galling for Royworld, whose 'Brakes' has already spent three weeks at No 2 behind '3 Days Awake', and now has to take runner-up position behind a new chart topper. And the chances of it eventually ascending to the top diminish considerably with the fast progress of two other songs in the top five. Climbing twelve places to number three are American band King of Prussia bringing their psychedlic janglings into the upper reaches with 'Misadventures of the Campaign Kids'. It's a topical number based around young people campaigning for a candidate in a US Election... except from the point of view of one who is more interested in one of the other campaigners than the candidate theirself! A delightful little slice of feel-good pop, it's expected to get to number one in the run-up to the American election in November, but still in with a chance is Eric Prydz, another European producer, up nine places to five with 'Pjanoo', and hoping to battle it out with Luetzenkirchen for the honour of having the biggest dance hit of the year. The two big climbers hamper the chances of Steph and Will Young in the Top Ten. Chart commentary: In another slow moving week at the top, German dance guru Luetzenkirchen makes it four weeks at number one with '3 Days Awake', for a third consecutive week keeping Royworld at number two with 'Brakes'. Katy Perry at last cracks the top three at Keane's expense, and with both Royworld and Katy releasing physical singles this Monday, they could finally get enough exposure to topple the hard-living Munich DJ. The sublime Delays sneak into the Top Five as Dizzee Rascal fades away, and there's still no shifting German Schlager pin-up Helene Fischer from the Top Ten, even though the autumn promises the release of a new single from her chart-topping album 'Zaubermond'. All the fast moving in the chart comes lower down. DSL Sofa advert song 'Chasing Butterflies' by Steph continues to make strong progress despite not even being available as a full song download, though constant repetition on ITV every night can't harm it's chances of drilling itself into the brain. Meanwhile, Will Young propels himself back into the Top Ten with 'Changes'. But even these songs may be beaten to the top by this week's highest entering and highest climbing songs. Eric Prydz looks to repeat the success of 'Call On Me' with his new instrumental 'Pjanoo' straight in at 14, whilst the jangly, almost Jam-like guitars of American college heroes King Of Prussia make a big impact, leaping from the lower reaches to 15 today. With the American Presidential election campaign about to make its traditional Labour Day launch, 'Misadventures of the Campaign Kids' could be the perfect soundtrack to the next eight weeks! Chart commentary: Little movement in the Top 20 this week, with the top three remaining unchanged, German producer Luetzenkirchen holding on to number one spot for the third consecutive week with '3 Days Awake'. The track has been at the centre of controversy this week, with Radio Newtown playing only the German language version '3 Tage Wach', due to the presence of an obscene word in the English lyric. And the opposition Conservatve leader of Newtown Council has slammed the track as a 'vile glorification of the culture of binge drinking' and called for it to be banned. Speaking better English than Steve McLaren, Tobias Luetzenkirchen has responded by declaring 'Ja wol, das ist schoen, all this publicity is keeping me at the top of the chart, and I am looking forward to visiting Engeland in Oktober for sure! I will be getting, how you say, troll-eyed!' Lower down the chart, Katy Perry finally cracks the top five, and Madcon enter the Top Ten. But highest new entry, straight in at eleven, is a song available only as a clip on a sofa company's website. The Coldplay-like 'Chasing Butterflies' by unknown artist Steph is the music from the current CSL sofa advert, and with a physical single release promised within weeks, it is tipped to become number one pretty soon.
