  1. Chris Brown - Turn Up The Music enters at #1 So Chris Brown gets his first UK #1 hit single this week, as new release Turn Up The Music enters at the top this week. Chris achieved his first chart entry in 2006 with #2 hit Run It, followed by several smaller hits. Then in 2008 With You made #8 and Forever made #4, both of which had very good runs and clocked up decent sales. Several flops then followed until 2011 when he hit #6 with Yeah 3x and #4 with Beautiful People, both of which also had lengthy chart runs and very respectable sales. Now he claims his very first #1 and 9th top 10 hit (including collaborations), taken from forthcoming 5th album Fortune. Time will tell if it will make him another fortune! Plan B - iLL Manners enters at #6 A man with not very good manners enters at #6! London rapper and singer Benjamin Paul Ballance-Drew makes his return to the upper reaches as iLL Manners debuts at #6 for Plan B. He first came on the scene in 2005 as a grime artist, his commercial breakthrough did not come until 2009 when he teamed up with production duo Chase & Status for End Credits which made #9. 2010 then saw the release of million selling album The Defamation Of Strickland Banks, on which he was more of a soul singer than rapper. That album spawned #9 hit Stay Too Long and biggest hit to date She Said which peaked at #3, followed by #16 hit Prayin' and some other minor hits. Whilst the Strickland Banks era showed off his soul vocals, he has now returned to his rap roots for protest song iLL Manners with a video showing footage of the London riots. Olly Murs - Oh My Goodness enters at #28 X Factor runner up and Xtra Factor co-presenter Olly Murs gets another top 40 hit this week as new single Oh My Goodness joins his current long runner Dance With Me Tonight in the top 40. Olly's debut single Please Don't Let Me Go hit #1 in August 2010, followed by #4 smash Thinking Of Me and debut self titled album. A further 2 singles followed - Heart On My Sleeve and Busy, peaking at #20 and #45 respectively. Then came the huge selling chart topper Heart Skips A Beat last year, from his also huge selling 2nd album In Case You Didn't Know. The aforementioned Dance With Me Tonight went on to give him a 3rd chart topper, following an X Factor performance alongside The Muppets (no not Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh). Oh My Goodness is looking to get Olly his 6th top 20 hit next week, as its official release is then. Vaccines - If You Wanna enters at #35 Now for a track which is just over a year old and only making the top 40 for the first time, due to its use in a TV advertisement. If You Wanna by indie band The Vaccines could only peak at #53 upon initial release last March, however debut album What Did You Expect From The Vaccines hit #4 ... well what did you expect? Post Break-Up Sex was their only other top 40 hit, making a rather modest #32 in January last year. The band have a second album due out later this year, this track making the top 40 bodes well for its success. B.Traits feat Elisabeth Troy - Fever enters at #36 London based DJ and producer Brianna Price makes a top 40 debut under the name of B.Traits, as single Fever comes in at #36 this week. The track is not a cover of the Peggy Lee classic, the Cascada track or even the Starsailor album track, it is an original dance song featuring vocals from Elisabeth Troy. B.Traits is now hosting her own monthly show on BBC Radio 1 and has an album due out shortly. Madonna tops the album charts Madonna scores her 12th UK #1 album this week as MDNA follows on from her last 5 studio albums and compilation Celebration, making her the most successful solo artist ever with regard to #1 albums (beating Elvis Presley's record). Just behind Madonna is David Guetta as he stays at #2 with Nothing But The Beat and both Emeli Sande and Adele rise back up 1 place. Following her appearence (and the performance of several tracks) on The Voice, Jessie J finds herself at #5 with Who You Are. Katy Perry's extended version of Teenage Dream : The Complete Confection is at #6 this week, following her drop of 1-4 in the singles chart with Part Of Me. Tennor Noah Stewart enters at #14, also rock band Shinedown enters in at #18 just a place ahead of veteran metal rockers Iron Maden. Personal Opinion I really don't like this Chris Brown song at #1, it is very generic and forgettable just like most of Mr Brown's output. I was a huge fan of Plan B's Strickland Banks era however I really do not like this protest song iLL Manners, mind you I generally do not like rap so didn't expect to like this at all. Still it's not as bad as those other horrible sweary rap songs from Azaelia Banks or Jay Z/Kanye! On the other hand I really love Olly Murs new track Oh My Goodness and am also happy to see If You Wanna by The Vaccines finally become the top 40 hit it deserves to be. Not sure about Fever, it's ok I suppose but nothing special. Same can be said for Madonna's new album, she's done better in the past.
  2. Thanks GD. I really like Noel's whole album, it's better than Liam's Beady Eye (which I also like). I haven't yet seen the Hunger Games film, but plan to in the next week or 2 as various friends of mine have recommended it.
  3. Thanks Mart!n :D
  4. Katy Perry - Part Of Me goes in at #1 We have a new #1 this week, in a very busy top 10 consisting of no less than 4 new entries all vying for the top spot. Top honours goes to US singer songwriter Katy Perry who scores her 3rd UK #1 hit single with Part Of Me. Katy debuted in 2008 with huge chart topper I Kissed A Girl amidst wide controversy. She then followed up with #4 peaking Hot n Cold then a further 2 smaller hits Thinking Of Me and Waking Up In Vegas. 2010 saw the release of the Teenage Dream album which went on to be her biggest era in terms of sales and singles success. She scored 5 top 10 hits - #1 California Gurls, #2 title track Teenage Dream, #3 Firework, #3 ET and #9 Last Friday Night (TGIF), followed by #18 hit The One That Got Away. Now she returns with the lead single to the new version of said album Part Of Me. Sean Paul - She Doesn't Mind enters at #2 Jamacan dancehall singer / rapper Sean Paul makes his return to the upper reaches of the UK chart, as he equals his biggest solo hit to date with She Doesn't Mind in at #2. Sean Paul first came on the scene in 2002 with #5 hit Gimme The Light, his commercial breathrough. 2003 however saw his biggest UK success when Get Busy reached #4 and Like Glue #3, he also hit #1 with his feature on Blu Cantrell's Beath and #2 alongside Beyonce on Baby Boy. He then scored a #6 hit with I'm Still In Love With You, followed by #2 hit We Be Burnin' but didn't score another sizeable hit until last year. Got 2 Luv U saw him team up with Alexis Jordan and hit #11, that track and She Doesn't Mind are from his forthcoming new album Tomahawk Technique. Labrinth - Last Time enters at #4 London born singer songwriter and producer Timothy McKenzie is back in the charts under the name of Labrinth, as Last Time debuts at #4. The last time he shook up the charts alongside Tinie Tempah on huge #2 hit Earthquake, after letting the sun shine. In 2010, Labrinth signed to Syco, becoming Simon Cowell's first signing in 6 years not to come from a talent show. Shortly after that came #3 debut hit Let The Sun Shine as well as an appearence on Devlin's Let It Go, Labrinth has also produced Yasmin's Finish Line and Ms Dynamite's Neva Soft. All 3 of his singles are from his forthcoming debut album Electronic Earth, due for release on 2nd April. JLS - Proud enters at #6 UK boy band JLS have got plenty to be proud of this week, as their Sport Relief single entitled Proud debuts at #6. Since coming second in 2008's X Factor and launching their career in 2009, the boys have now scored 9 top 10 hits out of 10 releases, including 5 #1s of their own (plus 3 other #1 charity collaborations). Beat Again was the debut, followed by Everybody In Love then #6 hit One Shot. The Club Is Alive then debuted at #1, as did Children In Need single Love You More, followed by #8 hit Eyes Wide Shut featuring the aforementioned Tinie Tempah. Last year saw them top the chart alongside Dev on She Makes Me Wanna, with Take A Chance On Me hitting #2. However their last single missed the top 10 as Do You Feel What I Feel limped to #16, however they now return to hit making ways with Proud. You Me At Six - The Swarm enters at #23 Since their 2007 debut, English rockers You Me At Six have had rather limited UK singles success with 3 minor top 40 hits. The biggest of those was a collaboration with hip hop duo Chiddy Bang, Rescue Me made #21 last year. Their other top 40 hits were 2009's Finders Keepers and last year's Loverboy, now they debut at #23 with The Swarm. This track is not actually the band's new single, but a promotional track for the new Alton Towers ride of the same name. Their new single No One Does It Better is due out in 2 week's time, taken from their 3rd album Sinners Never Sleep. Paul Weller - Sonik Kicks tops the albums chart The "modfather" scores his 4th UK #1 album this week as his 11th studio album release Sonik Kicks comes in at pole position to beat David Guetta by just 250 copies. Nothing But The Beat equals its #2 peak achieved last year, whilst Military Wives slip 2 places to #3. US indie rock band The Shins get their biggest UK album entry as 4th album Port Of Morrow debuts at #11, within a whisker of the top 10. Other new entries come from alternative Swedish group Miike Snow, country group The Band Perry and a live set from Faithless who have now officially split up. Opinionated bit! I am happy to see Katy Perry top the chart this week as I think it is the best of the big 4 new entries, albeit not Katy's best song but still really good. I have never been a fan of Sean Paul's music but have to admit to quite liking She Doesn't Mind, it's listenable. I wasn't keen on Earthquake by Labrinth but I do like Last Time. Not a fan of JLS at all, although I did like Beat Again and One Shot, and I do think Proud is probably their best so far ... mind you the standards are very low. Not a fan of You Me At Six but I do like their marketing strategy with this track. I am a huge fan of Paul Weller but find Sonik Kicks difficult to get into if I'm honest.

  11. Gotye feat Kimbra - Somebody That I Used To Know stays at #1 It is an amazing 5th week for Gotye at the top with Kimbra who is just somebody that he used to know, as the track once again beats off all competition. The last track to stay at the top for longer than 3 consecutive weeks was LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem in April and May last year. This Gotye track has now done the reverse of Adele's Someone Like You a year ago, it stayed at #1 for 4 weeks before returning for a single week, Shakira's Hips Don't Lie had the same run at #1 to this in 2006. There are no less than 4 potentially massive new releases out next week to challenge, from JLS, Katy Perry, Labrinth and Seal Paul. Alexandra Burke - Elephant enters at #3 X factor winner Alexandra Burke gets this week's highest new entry with an Elephant in her room, just behind Nicki Minaj's Starships that fly to #2. Alexandra first came onto the scene in 2008 after winning X Factor and selling over a million copies of her winner's single, a cover of Hallelujah. Her second single release and the one to lead her debut album came around 9 months later, as usual, in the form of #1 Bad Boys. She then scored a #8 hit with Broken Heals, #4 with All Night Long then #1 with Start Without You. Next came The Silence which only made #16, she was also featured on 2 charity #1s - 2008's Hero and 2010's Everybody Hurts. Elephant features Colombian/American producer Erick Morillo, who has also worked with the likes of Jocelyn Brown and Reel 2 Real in the 1990s. Jay Z & Kanye West - Niggas In Paris climbs to #10 Jay Z and Kanye West have now reached the top 10 with their track about certain people in the capital city of France, as it rises to #10. The pair have charted with HAM at #32, Otis at #27 and now this at #10. This is Kanye's 10th top 10 hit in the UK and biggest since 2008's Heartless, it is Jay Z's 6th and biggest since 2010's Young Forever. Another track getting a new peak is Coldplay's Charlie Brown, it rises to #22 following a 59p reduction. Swedish Mouse Mafia - Greyhound enters at #13 Swedish house trio Axwell, Steve Angello, and Sebastian Ingrosso, collectively known as Swedish House Mafia get another top 20 hit this week as instrumental track Greyhound hits #13. This follows up #4 hit Antidote and is the group's 5th hit single but the first to miss the top 10 so far. This comes from their forthcoming second album entitled One Night Stand, as does Antidote and Save The World. Jason Mraz - I Won't Give Up enters at #16 This week US singer songwriter Jason Mraz loses his "one hit wonder" tag as he scores a second UK top 40 hit with his new single I Won't Give Up, entering at #16. Jason Thomas Mraz released his first album Waiting For My Rocket To Come in 2002, as well as single Remedy (I Won't Worry), neither of which did much commercially. In Dec 2008 he released I'm Yours which debuted at #78 and slowly rose up the charts to eventually peak at #11 and remeain in the top 100 for most of the year, becoming both the longest running and biggest selling non-top 10 hit ever. His follow ups Make It Mine and Luck (with Colbie Caillat) failed to chart in this country. The lead single from upcoming album Love Is A Four Letter Word debuts at #16 this week showing that he won't give up on getting a 2nd hit. Azealia Banks feat Lazy Jay - 212 enters at #24 US rapper and lyricist Azealia Amanda Banks first came to prominence as a hot tip last year, having gone under the name of Miss Bank$ then becoming Azealia Banks. She then came 3rd in the BBC Sound Of 2012 Poll and released this single entitled 212 in December. The track features rapper Lazy Jay and has been gradually climing the charts, only this week entering the top 40 at #24. LMFAO - Sorry For Party Rocking US electro / hip hop duo LMFAO get themselves another top 40 hit this week with new single and title track to their album Sorry For Party Rocking. The duo first appeared on the 2008 #9 hit Let The Bass Kick In Miami Bitch, credited to Chuckie vs LMFAO. They also appeared on David Guetta's 2010 #1 hit Getting Over You, before hitting #1 on their own Party Rock Anthem (featuring singer Lauren Bennet and producer Goon Rock). This was followed up with #32 single Champagne Showers (featuring Natalia Kills) then huge #5 hit Sexy & I Know It, the latter is still in the top 20 at #17 after a 30 week run in the top 30. Tyga - Rack City enters at #40 After spending several weeks just outside the top 40, US rapper Tyga enters at the bottom rung of the top 40 with Rack City. Michael Ray Nguyen-Stevenson first came on the scene in 2008 under the stage name of Tyga, an acronym meaning Thank You God Always. Tyga released his debut independent album No Introduction as well as numerous mix tapes, however it is only now he is starting to gain commercial success. His second album was released entitled Careless World : Rise Of The Last King, containing this track. Military Wives get the #1 album After entering at #2, the debut album from the Military Wives chior climbs a place to make #1, thanks partly to mother's day gifts and continuing promotion. Highest new entry comes in at #3 for BBC Sound Of 2012 poll winner Michael Kiwinuka with his debut album Home Again, doing far better than the title track which could only make #29 and the follow up I'm Getting Ready which didn't chart at all. Marcus Collins debuts at #6 with his self titled debut album, featuring his current cover of Seven Nation Army along with 9 original tracks. Chart veteran Michael Bolton gets himself another hit album in at #11 with new album + hits collection entitles Gems. Opinionated part! I am happy to see Gotye remain at #1 for another week, it's always good to see a long running #1 when it's as good as this is. Thank goodness that awful new Alexandra Burke track didn't make it, I've liked some of her past singles but this is way below par. Don't care much for Swedish House Mafia's instrumental track, it's ok but nothing special really. It's far better than that absolutely awful and offensive Jay Z & Kanye track that I'm ashamed to say is at #10, not much better is that awful 212 by Azealia Banks, the dreadful Rack City and equally awful LMFAO track ... at least they say sorry and don't use racist or bad language! To end on a positive note though, I absolutely love I Won't Give Up by Jason Mraz, if his new album is as good as this then I'll be buying it.

  18. Gotye feat Kimbra - Somebody That I Used To Know stays at #1 So it is a 4th week at #1 for Gotye & Kimbra with Somebody That I Used To Know, and a 3rd consecutive week. Rihanna & Calvin Harris We found Love was the last single to have spent 3 consecutive weeks at #1, that was on 2 different occasions. This is breaking the trend of a new #1 every week that was developing, in fact this week there was no real competition for #1 as Emeli Sande goes back up to #2 and Nicki Minaj advances to #3. The only main competition to speak of next week is likely to come from Alexandra Burke, and perhaps the aforementioned Nicki Minaj. Stooshe feat Travie McCoy - Love Me enters at #5 Hotly tipped new 3 piece girl group StooShe get this week's highest new entry at #5 with Love Me, which features US rapper Travie McCoy. The group hail from London and are the first act from the BBC Sound Of 2012 poll to score a top 10 hit single. Last year, the trio released a buzz single called Betty Woz Gone, both tracks come from their forthcoming new album Swings & Roundabouts due out shortly. This is the 4th UK top 20 single that Travie McCoy features on, only 2010's #3 hit Billionaire is he the lead artist on. Tinchy Stryder feat Pixie Lott - Bright Lights enters at #7 Ghana born UK grime rapper Tinchy Stryder gets another top 10 hit this weeks as Bright Lights enters at #7, featuring Pixie Lott. Tinchy's UK singles success is best described as hit and miss really. His first charting single Stryderman only made #73 in 2008, however he broke through in 2009 with #3 hit Take Me Back (feat Taio Cruz) followed by 2 #1s - Number One (with N-Dubz) and Never Leave You (with Amele Berrabah). This was then followed by several mid-table hits - #14 cover of You're Not Alone, #10 In My System and #22 Second Chance. #22 album track Game Over followed then #14 hit Let It Rain, both of which sold well in the long run. Tinchy hit #5 last year alongside Dappy on Spaceship, however this was followed by another flop as Off The Record only made #24. He now returns to hit making ways as he teams up with Pixie Lott on Bright Lights at #7. This is now Pixie's 12th top 20 hit in total since her 2009 debut, and the 4th straight top 10 hit for her. Marcus Collins - Seven Nation Army enters at #9 Liverpool born X Factor contestant Marcus Collins debuts at #9 with his cover of the White Stripes classic Seven Nation Army. Marcus was a contestant in last year's X Factor coming second to girl group Little Mix, since then he has been working on his debut album which features 2 covers (this and Jackie Wilson's Higher & Higher) plus 9 original compositions. Seven Nation Army was originally the first of 5 top 10 hits for US garage rock / punk band White Stripes, reaching #7 in 2003. The song has been covered by many artists ranging from rockers Audioslave and Hard Fi through to female singer Kate Nash and French soul singer Ben I'Oncle Soul. Marus' version is based on the latter version, essentially a cover of a cover. Rihanna feat Jay Z - Talk That Talk re-enters at #31 Barbadan super hit making machine Rihanna makes her return to the charts this week, as the title track to her current Talk That Talk album is back in at #31. The track first entered at #25 upon release of the parent album but dropped out, it is now back as it is now confirmed as single #3. This follows #16 peaking You Da One and massive million selling chart topper We Found Love, the latter is at #26 this week after spending 23 weeks inside the top 40. Jay Z is also featured on this track, he can also be seen alongside Kanye West on Niggas In Paris which rises to #18 this week. Taio Cruz feat Flo Rida - Hangover enters at #34 UK singer songwriter and producer Taio cruz returns to the charts this week as his new track Hangover debuts at #34. Taio's UK success can also be describes as a little hit and miss. His 2006 debut I Just Wanna Know made #29 followed by #26 Moving On, Come On Girl however hit #5 but was followed by another 2 minor top 20 hits. In 2009, Taio hit #1 with Break Your Heart but could only make #42 with No Other One, then #6 with Dirty Picture. He hit #1 again with his biggest hit Dynamite in 2010, which was followed by #8 Higher (with Kylie Minogue / Travie McCoy). This year, he returned with #3 hit Troublemaker but did not last very long. Now he debuts at #34 alongside Flo Rida with Hangover, likely to improve in the next few weeks. Flo Rida now appears on 3 of this week's top 40 singles - Wild Ones at #4, Good feeling at #33 and this one. Bruce Springsteen tops the album chart The boss AKA Bruce Springsteen gets his 9th UK #1 album this week as Wrecking Ball storms straight in at #1, beating the sales of his last Working On A Dream. Military Wives got the xmas #1 single with Wherever You Are and now get a #2 debut album as In My Dreams debuts in runner's up position. Lionel Richie gets his 11th top 10 album this week as Tuskegee hits #7, a country flavoured album of rerecordings in duet form. This is just above Katie Melua whose 5th album Secret Symphony debuts at #8. There are many other significant new entries from the likes of Gilbert O'Sullivan, Civil Wars, Just Fletcher (yes!) and Sinead O'Connor. Opinion I am still not tired of Somebody That I Used To Know so am happy to see it still at #1, I am actually beginning almost to like Starships by Nicki Minaj! I really like StooShe's Love Me, something a bit different from the Saturdays, Girls Aloud, etc. Not keen on Tinchy / Pixie but quite like Marcus' cover of 7 Nation Army even if the original is miles better. I quite like Talk That Talk and hpe it can go on to be a decent sized hit, not keen on Taio's Hangover yet but it may grow on me. I hate that Jay Z & Kanye thing and think it should be nowhere near the top 40 let alone top 20! I am impatial to Bruce Springsteen but good on him for getting another huge #1 album.
