007 Chart Commentary - 4th March 2012
Goyte feat Kimbra – Somebody That I Used To Know stays at #1 Yes you read correctly and there is not a new #1 this week, it is the same as last week. Goyte & Kimbra’s Somebody That I Used To Know holds on at #1 this week for a third in total, holding off some strong competition. The last single to manage 2 consecutive weeks at #1 was Jessie J’s Domino, whilst the last to manage 3 was Rihanna’s We Found Love which got 2 spells of 3 weeks last year. Marcus Collins and StooShe are the 2 biggest competitors for the top spot next week. Dappy feat Brian May – Rockstar enters at #2 This week’s highest new entry and the one to come within 700 copies of dethroning Gotye at the beginning of the week comes from the unlikely pairing of Dappy and Brian May. UK singer songwriter and rapper Costadinos Contostavlos or Dappy is best known as one third of N-Dubz, alongside cousin Tulisa and friend Fazer. Dappy’s first hit outside of N-Dubz came last year when his Tinchy Stryder collaboration Spaceship hit #5, this was followed by the chart topping No Regrets. Brian May is best known as the guitarist in rock band Queen, and has had some solo hits in the 1990’s with the biggest being Too Much Love Will You and Driven By You. Now Dappy just misses out on 2 consecutive solo #1s, by entering at #2 with Rockstar. Still it gets Brian May his biggest hit outside of Queen. Matt Redman & LZ7 – Twenty Seven Million enters at #12 Matt Redman may not have been a household name up until now, he is a Christian worship leader and singer who has teamed up with Christian rap / pop group LZ7. LZ7 made #26 in 2010 with their single This Little Light, following an online campaign. A similar campaign has resulted in this charity single entering at #12, with proceeds going towards stopping human trafficking throughout the world. Chiddy Bang – Ray Charles enters at #13 Another act consisting of rappers gets a new entry this week, US hip hop Duo Chiddy Bang enter at #13 with their new single entitled Ray Charles. 2010 #12 hit Opposite Of Adults was their first and only previous top 40 hit in the UK, borrowing heavily from MGMT’s Kids. The follow up Truth could only make #50, however Ray Charles now provides them with a second top 20 hit. This song is a homage to the late US singer Ray Charles who was famous for classic hits such as Hit The Road Jack, I Can’t Stop Loving You and Take These Chains From My Heart. Madeon – Icarus enters at #22 French electropop producer Madeon gets his debut UK top 40 hit this week as single Icarus enters at #22, just missing the top 20. Madeon is due to perform live at festivals throughout the summer as well as support act for Swedish House Mafia. He has also produced remixes for Killers Smile Like You Mean It, Pendulum The Island and Deadmau5 Raise Your Weapon. Arctic Monkeys – R U Mine? Enters at #23 Sheffield band Arctic Monkeys get themselves another top 40 hit this week as new single R U Mine? enters at #23. The band first exploded onto the scene in 2005 after being an Internet sensation, as their first 2 singles I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor and When The Sun Goes Down both hit #1. Their debut album was the fastest seller of last decade, and they have scored 4 successive #1 albums. Last seen in the top 40 with #28 hit Don’t Sit Down Cos I’ve Moved Your Chair, taken from their Suck It And See album. This is a non-album single release and sees them bag a 9th top 40 hit in total, beating their last lead single. Utah Saints vs Drumsound & Bassline Smith – What Can You Do For Me enters at #28 Utah Saints were a dance band who scored 7 top 40 hits during the 1990s, the biggest of which was #4 hit Something Good. Something Good contains a sample of Kate Bush’s Cloudbusting, was remixed in 2008 and hit #8. Now their debut hit What Can You Do For Me is remixed and is back at #28, featuring samples from Eurythmics There Must Be An Angel and Gwen Guthrie Ain't Nothing Going On But the Rent. Demi Lovato – Skyscraper enters at #32 US singer songwriter and Disney actress, Demi Lovato gets her highest peaking UK hit to date this week (albeit only just). Her new single Skyscraper scrapes in at #32, after being a top 10 hit in her native America. Demi’s only previous UK hits are This Is Me #33 in 2008 and La La Land #35 in 2009. However she has been much more successful in the US with 3 top 10s there, and also starring rolls in the Camp Rock movies. Emeli Sande's album Our Version Of Events returns to #1 After being toppled by Adele's multi-record breaking 21 album, Emeli Sande goes back to #1 to spend a second week there in total. Highest new entry is in at #5 for Meat Loaf with his new album Hell In A Handbasket. Pink Floyd make a return with the classic album The Wall in remastered form at #22. Ting Tings can only make #23 with their second album Songs From Nowheresville, after a flop single Hang It Up. Other new entries in this week’s album chart are from Cranberries, David Sylvian and High Contrast. Black Keys get a new peak with their album El Camino, containing their 2 current top 100 singles Gold On The Ceiling and Lonely Boy. Opinion I am happy to see Gotye get another week at #1 because it is probably my favourite song of the year now and is something a bit different. It stops this run of single week #1s we've been seeing, and best of all it stops crappy Dappy getting another #1 ... big drop next week for this guff please! Good to see the wonderful Ed Sheeran get a 4th top 10 even if he is drunk again. I'd need to be very drunk to like that Matt Redman & LZ7 song, it is for a very good cause but an awful song. Just as bad as that Chiddy Bang rubbish, I'd much rather listen to the singer Ray Charles thank you very much! Not keen on that Icarus track by Maden, it's ok I guess. Arctic Monkeys are definitely one of my faviourite bands and their new single RU Mine is rather good. Utah Saints were ok back in the 1990's and this remix is ok but they should've left this one alone me thinks.

007 Chart Commentary - 26th Feb 2012
Ha that's a different way of puting it I suppose, Adele still sung brilliantly in my opinion and did not deserve to be cut off ... especially for that awful Blur performance. Jason Derulo is far from my favourite singer and Breathing is not brilliant but I must admit I do find it a bit catchy.

007 Chart Commentary - 26th Feb 2012
Gotye feat Kimbra - Somebody That I Used To Know returns to #1 So we have a different number one single again this week, however this is one that actually racks up a second week at the summit. After climbing to #1, last week Somebody That I Used To Know dropped 2 places behind new entries from DJ Fresh and Emeli Sande. Now as the top 3 tracks reverse their order, we see Gotye and Kimbra back at #1. This is the 5th song in total to return to #1 since 2000, the last being Rihanna's We Found Love in the latter half of last year. Nicki Minaj – Starships climbs to #7 Trinidadian (not US as I incorrectly stated last week) rapper and singer songwriter Nicki Minaj gets her highest charting UK single as lead artist, as Starships climbs 9 places to reach a #7 peak. This track has so far outpeaked Superbass by 1 place, however time will tell if it can outsell it in the long run. In total, this is Nicki’s 4th top 10 hit, the others being Jay Sean’s 2012, David Guetta’s Where them Girls At and her own Superbass. Gym Class Heroes feat Neon Hitch - Ass Back Home enters at #9 This week’s highest new entry goes to US hip hop collective Gym Class Heroes, as their new single enters at #9. Ass Back Home (or Get Yourself Back Home) is the group’s 2nd single to be lifted from their forthcoming album Papercut Chronicles II, due for release shortly. This is now Gym Class Heroes’ fifth UK top 10 hit since their 2006 breakthrough Cupid’s Chokehold. The track features UK female singer songwriter Neon Hitch, who was signed to Mike Skinner’s label and featured on 3Oh3’s Follow You Down. Brit Award boosts from the likes of Ed Sheeran and Adele The annual Brit Awards ceremony took place on Tues 21st Feb and as has been the case previous years, notable boosts can be seen from winners / performers. Biggest boosts are from Ed Sheeran and Adele, who have 3 and 2 top 40 tracks respectively. Ed’s Lego House is back up 20 places to #17 after being performed, Drunk rises to #11 and The A Team re-enters at #33. Adele made her live comeback after throat surgery by performing Rolling In The Deep (as well as getting her speech cut short). Said track rises 10 places to #29, whilst million selling Someone Like You re-enters at #32. Other boosts can be seen from Emeli Sande, Rihanna and Coldplay, the latter get their 15th UK top 40 hit with Charlie Brown at #30. Cher Lloyd re-enters at #25, Jason Derulo enters at #35, Jay Z + Kanye West enter at #37 Cher Lloyd’s single Want U Back got its official release this week, which sees the track re-enter at a new peak (only just) of #25, after making #26 5 weeks ago then dropping out. Jason Derulo’s new single Breathing has been hanging outside the top 40 for several weeks and finally enters at #35. Now he catches his breath as well as an 8th top 40 hit (out of 9 releases). Jay Z + Kanye West enter at #37 with their 3rd single release as a duo, entitled Niggas In Paris. This follows HAM and Otis into the top 40, and also contains an audio sample from the film Blades Of Glory. Adele’s 21 album returns to #1 The Brits effect can be seen in this week’s album chart too, as Adele’s 21 makes it 21 weeks at #1 by returning there. First album to sell 3 million in 1 calendar year and most weeks at #1 for a female artist, are amongst 21’s many achievements. Now 21 has 21 weeks at the top, debut album 19 is up to #7 this week. Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, Florence & The Machine and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds are amongst the album boosts seen. Rockers Band Of Skulls get the only top 40 new entry at #14 with their new album Sweet Sour, those missing out include new albums from Sleigh Bells, Inme and Lamb Chop. Personal Opinion I am happy to see the brilliant Gotye track back at #1 and even happier to see a song like that become the huge hit it deserves to be. Still hate Nicki Minaj and that awful new song of hers (I do like Turn Me On though), Gym Class Heroes dish out another 4 minutes of gibberish and the equally dreadful Sexy & I Know It is back in the top 20. On a brighter note, Coldplay actually make the top 30 with their brilliant new single Charlie Brown, and always great to see Adele doing well again. As for that horrific Jay Z / Kanye West track, I will not even comment on its title or subject matter! I do quite like Jason Derulo’s new song, not his best it is quite good.

B-sides
Personally I like B sides if it's from an act that I like, as I don't care for remixes much. I agree that it is be a good way to get people to buy post album singles, if the EP includes new songs. It's worked for the likes of JLS, 1D and The Saturdays, I've bought recent B sides from Beady Eye, Olly Murs and Lana Del Rey.

Great song so hopefully it does at least outpeak Starlight. Top 40 would be good, but that's not going to happen. :-(

iTunes Chart: February 2012 (Part II)
Great for Kelly and Olly, hope to see Stronger back in the top 10 and Dance With Me Tonight get even more sales. :D Really don't like LMFAO or Cher Lloyd, however Sexy & I Know It will likely get back top 10 now and Want U Back top 20 after all. :(

Singles/Albums landmarks '09-'12 - Now see website!
These are interesting numbers for me, I like that kind of stuff. Thanks! :cheer: Good that these numbers have gone up year on year, especially with the higher sellers. Last year there were 23 selling >500k, interestingly 5 of these only passed the mark in the last week of 2011. I wonder if we'll see another increase this year, the charts may be slow moving but at least we have decent sales.

Thanks for that, interesting that Whitney now has the most amount of simultaneous top 75 hits for a female artist. Whitney's music will live on forever.

007 Chart Commentary - 19th Feb 2012
DJ Fresh feat Rita Ora - Hot Right Now enters at #1 UK drum & bass and dubstep producer Daniel Stein gets his second #1 as DJ Fresh proves that as far as popularity is concerned, he is indeed Hot Right Now. DJ Fresh was first a member of drum & bass trio Bad Company up until 2006, when he released his own debut album which did not chart. He achieved commercial success in 2009 when Gold Dust hit #24 and sold very well in the process, but flopped with follow up Lassitude. Last year saw him hit #1 with Louder, featuring vocals from Welsh singer Sian Evans from band Kosheen. Hot Right Now features vocals from Kosovo born UK based singer Rita Ora and crashes straight in at #1. Emeli Sande - Next To Me enters at #2 Aberdeen born singer songwriter Emeli Sande gets herself a 3rd solo hit single this week as new rleease Next To Me enters at #2. Emeli first appeared in the UK singles chart in 2009 alongside Chipmunk on his #6 hit Diamond Rings. 2010 saw her collaborate with another rapper, Wiley on his #8 hit Never Be Your Woman. Emeli then debuted at #2 last year with huge hit Heaven but could only limp to #21 with the follow up Daddy, however last year also saw her feature on Professor Green's chart topping Read All About It. Next To Me comes in at #2 this week, also a solo version of Read All About It falls just short of the top 40 this week. One Direction - One Thing climbs to #9 X Factor generated boy band One Direction get themselves a 3rd UK top 10 hit this week as their 3rd single climbs a massive 17 places to #9. This follows last year's chart topper What Makes You Beautiful and #3 follow up Gotta Be You into the top 10. All 3 tracks are lifted from their debut album Up All Night, which has sold almost 1/2 million copies since its release at the tail end of last year. Nicki Minaj - Starship enters at #16 US rapper / singer Nicki Minaj has a new entry at #16 with her new single Starship, the lead single from her forthcoming second album. Nicki made her UK chart debut just 2 years ago, alongside Jay Sean on #9 hit 2012 (It Ain't The End) and then alongside Will.i.am on #11 hit Check It Out. It wasn't until last year that she got her first hit as lead artist, with #22 Moment 4 Life (alongside Drake) then #24 Girls Fall Like Dominoes. Superbass then followed along with Where Them Girls At (with David Guetta and Flo Rida), both of which turned out to be huge - peaking at #8 and #3 respectively. Then there was her #16 hit Fly featuring Rihanna, as well as Turn Me On (another with David Guetta) which is only reaching its peak now after video release, at #xx this week. Whitney Houston re-enters top 40 with 3 songs and Adele with 1 Last Sunday saw the untimely death of Whitney Houston, following drug abuse and personal problems. As is often the case when high profile singers die, there is a flood of tribute buying of their back catalogue, with no exception here. The highest being at #14 I Will Always Love You, originally taken from The Bodyguard OST and topping the charts for 10 weeks in 1992/3. 1987 chart topper I Wanna Dance With Somebody is at #20, whilst her 1988 chart topper One Moment In Time is at #40 as used at the Olympics that year. Adele re-enters at #39 with last year's #2 mega-hit Rolling In The Deep, after her performance at the Grammy Awards. Emeli Sande tops the album chart with Our Version Of Events As predicted by most, Emeli Sande's debut album has entered stright in at #1 this week with rather good sales of over 100k. This knocks Lana Del Rey to #2 after a fortnight at the top. After climbing to #1 last week with his single, Gotye finds himself with a top 5 album as Making Mirrors debuts at #4. Whitney Houston could well have been #1 with her Ultimate Collection, but that is #1 in the "Budget Album Chart" due to dealer pricing. However Greatest Hits makes it back in at #7 despite stock / distribution issues, expected to rise next week as supply arrives at the shops. There are no other new entries in the top 40, however Adele's 19 and Rebecca Ferguson's Heaven also rise back into the top 10. Personal Opinion I think Hot Right Now is OK but nothing special, not worthy of a chart topper, like Louder last year. Emeli Sande's Next To Me however is brilliant in my opinion and really deserved #1, her album is really good as well. Whilst I am not a fan of 1D or of boy bands in general, I do quite like One Thing and am glad to see it actually make the top 10. I have no time for Nicki Minaj at all through and think that Starship is just as bad as all her other rubbish, I do like her singing on Turn Me On though but not her ©rap. Whitney Houston's passing was sad but not altogether unexpected, I admit to being a big fan of her music and my favourite 3 songs of hers have charted again.

Good Delta Hit Parade: 13th February 2012
Hello GD, Can't remember when I last had a new #1, may have been Run by Leona Lewis 3 years ago. Need to check out your #1 and the new Tone Damli song. 007 Chart Commentary - 12th Feb 2012
Gotye feat Kimbra - Somebody That I Used To Know climbs to #1 Once more we have a new #1 single this week as Somebody That I Used To Know by Belgian singer Gotye and Australian singer Kimbra climbs a further 2 places to the top. So far this year, only Jessie J's Domino has managed to hold on for a 2nd week at #1, however all but 1 of those new #1s has been a climber and has had (or are likely to have) respectable overall sales. The only exception to this is Cover Drive's Twilight which has so far gone 1-6-7 and looks likely to drop off quickly, next week however there is also completition from Emeli Sande and DJ Fresh. Will.i.am feat Jennifer Lopez & Mick Jagger - THE (The Hardest Ever) enters at #3 This week's highest new entry comes from US rapper Will.i.am who teams up with Jennifer Lopez and Mick Jagger for THE (The Hardest Ever). William James Adams is of course most famous as a member of Black Eyed Peas, who have scored a total of 16 top 20 hits since 2003 including 5 #1s. Outwith the group, he has appeared on and produces hit singles from the likes of Busta Rhymes, Pussycat Dolls, Cheryl Cole, Nicki Minaj & Usher. US actress and singer Jennifer Lopez has amassed 16 top 10 singles since 1999 including 3 #1s, Mick Jagger had a massive 21 top 10's with the Rolling Stones including no less than 8 #1s. After a cover version of THE (The Hardest Ever) charting a fortnight ago at #40, the original version is released after being held back for some time. The result is this #3 entry. David Guetta feat Nicki Minaj - Turn Me On climbs to #11 Not much action in this week's singles chart really, however the highest climber comes from David Guetta & Nicki Minaj with Turn Me On, up a massive 22 places to #11. This comes the week after Guetta made #1 alongside Sia with Titanium and the video for this track was also released. Turn Me On is very likely to make top 10 in the coming weeks, even before it has been confirmed as an official UK single. Guetta's album Nothing But The Beat, which has both these songs on, stays in the top 10 fo ranother week also. Madonna feat Nicki Minaj & MIA - Give Me All Your Luv enters at #37 The big comeback single for Madonna entitled Give Me All Your Luv enters at a rather low #37 this week, also featuring female rappers Nicki Minaj and MIA. The single was released last Friday but was not eligible for last week's chart due to it being available only with pre-orders of her forthcoming album, the same thing that happened to Coldplay's Paradise. This promotion ended last Sunday and therefore this week's chart position is on 6 days of sales, hence the lower than expected entry point. Another contributing factor to this is the on-air on-sale release, meaning that the track has not yet built up airplay, so is expected to climb in the coming weeks. Madonna has now had a total of 60 top 10 hits in the UK since her 1983 debut Holiday, only 7 singles have missed the top 10 and 13 number ones. Madonna has sold more than 300 million albums worldwide and is the world's top-selling female recording artist of all time according to the Guinness Book of Records. So maybe she'll get a hit one day and become well known ... don't know about that! Lil Wayne feat Bruno Mars - Mirror enters at #38 US rapper Dwayne Michael Carter AKA Lil Wayne scores what is only his 3rd UK top 40 hit as lead artist this week, as Mirror debuts at #38. Despite featuring on hit singles for the likes of Chris Brown, JLo and Enrique Iglesias, only Lollipop and Right Above It have made the top 40 previously. This track also features Bruno Mars, who gets his 10th UK top 40 hit in total. Lana Del Rey stays at #1 with Born To Die album After sales of over 120k last week, Lana Del Rey stays at #1 for a second week with her album Born To Die, holding of competition from Maverick Sabre whose debut album Lonely Are The Brave enters at #2. Just behind at #3 is Sir Paul MacCartney with his 23rd solo studio album, an album of standard covers entitled Kisses On The Bottom. Rock band Van Halen make a triumphant return at #6 with their new album A Different Kind Of Truth, their first in 14 years and highest charter ever in the UK. There are other new entries this week from Young Guns, Mark Lanegan, Pet Shop Boys, Goldfrapp and Air. Opinion I am happy to see Gotye get to #1 with the unusual but very good Somebody That I Used To Know, however I wouldn't have minded Titanium staying at #1 as it would have been a rare multi-week #1. However it is far, far, far better than the mess of a song that is will.i.am's THE or even worse last week's #2 from Alyssa Reid. Whilst I normally cannot stand Nicki Minaj, I actually really like Turn Me On and am glad to see it rise up the charts quickly. I am undecided about Madonna's new single and think that Micki and MIA both ruin it completely, saying that as a huge fan of Madonna's ... likely a grower.

Yes it also means that I've liked every #1 single this year to date, expect Flo Rida. Extend that to Military Wives at the tail end of last year too.
