  1. Time for the Black Eyed Peas to be #1 The X Factor effect comes into play once more, as The Time (Dirty Bit) by Black Eyed Peas rises to #1 after their performance on the show. The track was first released midweek and entered at #11 then rose to #7, before dropping back down to #11 and rising last week to #6 before rising to #1 this week. This is the fifth #1 in total now for the peas, with the first being Where Is The Love featuring uncredited vocals from Justin Timerlake in 2003. Last year of course they scored 3 #1s – Boom Boom Pow, the million selling I Gotta Feeling and Meet Me Halfway … latter also beat Leona Lewis after an X Factor performance. Next week we will likely see the X Factor winner at the top, although romour has it that the other finalists are releasing their songs too but not sure if they’ll be chart eligible. Willow – Whip My Hair enters at #2 The 10 year old daughter of Will Smith releases her debut single this week, after being #1 in the middle of the week, Whip My Hair settles for second place in the end. This is the first single from her yet to be titled forthcoming album and sees her drop the last name to record under Willow. Willow’s father Will Smith has of course scored #1s with Boom Shake The Room and Men In Black as well as several other big hits in the 1990s. Willow is thus the youngest act to score a UK top 5 hit for several decades, following from Justin Bieber earlier this year who was 16 when Baby hit #3. Michael Jackson feat Akon – Hold My Hand enters at #11 Just missing the top 10 this week by the narrowest of margins is the return of Michael Jackson with “new” material. Before his death last year, MJ had recorded lots of new material in preparation for his comeback and return to the limelight. One of the tracks he worked on alongside US star Akon, that Michael reportedly wanted released as lead single was Hold My Hand. The track thus returns Michael to the top 40 for the first time since all the post-death re-entries, with the highest being Man In The Mirror. An album of previously recorded “new” material is released next week, a sure fire top 5 album I’d say. Alexandra Burke – The Silence enters at #16 2008’s X Factor winner Alexandra Burke makes her return with sixth single release The Silence, in at #16 following a performance on the show. The track appears on the original release of her album Overcome as well as the Deluxe Edition in a slightly remixed version. As the track has been available to buy for over a year, this is the very first Alexandra Burke single so far to miss the top 10. She has so far amassed 3 #1s – Hallelujah, Bad Boys and Start Without You, as well as #4 All Night Long and #8 Broken Heals. Kylie Minogue – Better Than Today re-enters at #32 Australian superstar singer Kylie Minogue returns to the top 40 this week with her new single Better Than Today following its full release. The track was performed on X Factor 5 weeks ago but unusually failed to chart, then 2 weeks ago made #40 and last week dropped sharply. Making #32, Better Than Today is Kylie’s very first single release to miss the top 30 and only 3rd to miss top 20. Since her 1987 debut, Kylie’s first 10 singles all went top 5 with 27 top 10 hits in total over her 23 year career. This may be her lowest charting single yet (aside from The One download only release) but she still has a brilliant chart record. Take That progress to a fourth week at #1 Take That’s huge sales continue as their latest album Progress sold its millionth copy this week and stays at #1 for 4 weeks. Behind the boys, Michael Buble climbs to #2 following an ITV documentary and Olly Murs drops a place to #3. There are no new entries within the top 30, only a re-entry for Alexandra Burke’s deluxe edition of Overcome. Bryn Terfal, Plain White Ts and The Priests did release new albums this week though. Opinion Personally I hate The Time by Black Eyed Peas and think it totally ruins Time Of My Life, however in my eyes is the lesser of the 2 evils. Whip My Hair is absolutely terrible, I feel sorry with Willow who I think is being pushed into stardom at far too young an age. Anyway I quite like the MJ and Akon collaboration and think it works well, even if it isn’t nearly as good as most of Jacko’s previous work. I think The Silence is Alex Burke’s best song yet, I have liked all her other songs but this pure class for me. Whilst I have only liked a handful of Kylie singles in the past, I actually quite like Better Than Today. I’m not happy that the Manics missed out but am glad Flo Rida missed as his new song is rubbish.

  6. X Factor Finalists 2010 – Heroes stays at #1 So this year’s X-Facrot Finalists have done what last year’s just failed to do, that is get a second week at #1. Their cover of David Bowie’s Heroes gets a second week on top in a very closely run top 3 this week. Indeed charity singles are one of the few types of record to rely on physical CD sales, Heroes downloads have dwindled somewhat this week. However either way, it is raising money for Help For Heroes charity, a true definition of the word “hero”! Nicole Scherzinger – Poison enters at #3 Former lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls with the surname some struggle to pronounce, Nicole Scherzinger gets her first big solo hit this week as Poison enters at #3. Helped along by an X-Factor performance and decent airplay, Poison has proved much more popular than previous solo efforts. In 2007 whilst still with her group, Nicole released her debut solo single Baby Love which made #14 but subsequent singles Supervillain and Puakenikeni failed to chart. Therefore her planned debut album Her Name Is Nicole did not materialize … maybe because she didn’t actually know her name! Now her solo career gets off to a much better (re)start as Poison hits #3. David Guetta feat Rihanna – Who's That Chick enters at #9 That “chick” is Rihanna, as she scores a third simultaneous top 10 hit this week with Who’s That Chick alongside David Guetta. French DJ and producer David Guetta first hit the charts under his own name with Just A Little More Love in 2001 making #19. Then in 2006, he scored a top 5 smash with Love Don’t Let Me Go (Walking Away) followed by top 10 Love Is Gone. Then last year, he had 2 #1s with When Love Takes Over (feat Kelly Rowland) and Sexy Bitch (feat Akon). He has had 2 #1s this year with Getting Over You (feat Chris Willis, Fergie & LMFAO) and Flo Rida’s Club Can’t Handle Me. Who’s That Chick comes in at #9 and completes 3 Rihanna songs in a row, What’s My Name up 2 to #8 and Only Girl down 2 to #7. One artist has not scored 3 top 10 hits in one week since John Lennon in 1980. Coldplay – Christmas Lights enters at #18 Chris Martin & co make their return to the top 40 this week with their new single and a brand new Christmas song, in case the title didn’t give it away! Coldplay formed in 1996 and got their first breakthrough in 2000 with #4 hit Yellow, this was followed by 10 top 10 hits including their solitary #1 so far Viva La Vida. They were last seen in the top 40 last year when Life In Technicolour II made #28, now they hit #18 with their first xmas song entitled Christmas Lights. Just behind Coldplay, we find the 2 classic xmas songs re-entering for the fourth year running – Mariah #22 and Pogues/Kirsty #26. N-Dubz – Girls enters at #23 UK hip hop group N-Dubz enter at #23 with their new single Girls, the second to be taken from their new album Love Live Life. This is essentially an album track, however is due for a full single release in a fortnight’s time so expected to become the group’s 7th UK top 20 hit out of 13 releases to date. This comes just 6 weeks after Best Behaviour debuted and peaked at #10. Afrojack feat Eva Simons – Take Over Control enters at #24 Dutch producer and DJ Afrojack gets his debut top 40 hit this week with Take Over Control, in at #24. The track features the vocals of fellow Dutch vocalist Eva Simons, who released her own single Silly Boy last year but failed to chart. Eva is due to release her debut solo album next year, she has also appeared on a Chris Brown album Track Pass Out (not the Tinie Tempah song). Alexa Goddard – Turn My Swag On enters at #26 Turn My Swag On is the third single from rapper Soulja Boy’s debut album, however it failed to chart in its original form. It was hip hop producer Greg Street who charted earlier on this year with the track, making #17. The song was performed by X-Factor contestant Cher Lloyd in the slower style of Keri Hilson, however the Keri version is not available to purchase. Therefore a cover by Surrey vocalist Alexa Goddard makes the track’s second appearance in the top 40, entering as it does at #26 this week. The Wanted – Lose My Mind enters at #29 New boyband The Wanted score a third top 40 hit this week, following a performance on the X-Factor of Lose My Mind. This follows in the footsteps of #1 debut All Time Low and #2 follow up Heart Vacancy, all 3 tracks are taken from their self titled album. Lose My Mind is due a full release in 3 week’s time so I fully expect this to be another top 10 hit for the lads. Take That stay at #1 in the albums chart As expected with the first 2 week’s high sales, Progress by Take That stays at #1 for a third successive week. This week’s highest new entry at #2 is the debut self titled album from X-Factor runner up Olly Murs, featuring #1 single Please Don’t Let Me Go and current #4 hit Thinking Of Me. In at #7 is the third album from N-Dubz entitled Love Live Life, entering just 1 place lower than its predecessor and 4 places higher than the debut. Duffy seems unable to follow up the huge success of #1 debut Rockferry as her second album Endlessly enters at #9, featuring flop single Well Well Well. The Beginning comes after The END for the Black Eyed Peas, but seems so far unable to match its huge success, entering as it does at #17. Personal opinion I still hate the X-Factor Finalists ruination of Bowie’s Heroes but it’s for a very good cause to I’m not complaining about it spending a second week at #1. However it is so unlucky that Ellie Goulding’s lovely rendition of Your Song is stuck at #2 again. I really like Nicole’s song Poison, it’s so catchy and wouldn’t have complained it that made #1 instead. I quite like Who’s That Chick, but not as much as other Rihanna songs and other Guetta songs for that matter. I love Coldplay’s new xmas song, it’s so good to see a new xmas song make it in, above the classic ones as well. I hate N-Dubz new song just as I do almost everything else they’ve done, same for that rubbish Turn My Swag On. Not too keen on that Afrojack nonsense either, decent singer but not decent song IMO. The new one from The Wanted is rather good even if it does sound rather like Use Somebody in places.
  7. Hiya GD, So TT managed 7 weeks at your #1 before dropping, same as me. Not sure I like What's My Name yet but it is growing on me. Here are my favs: 1. 8. X Factor Finalists 2010 - Heroes enters at #1 So it is 3 years in a row now for the X Factor, as the charity single release by this year's finalists enters straight in at #1. This is following on from 2008's group cover of Mariah Carey's Hero and 2009's group cover of Michael Jackson's You Are Not Alone. This year's song choice to cover is Heroes, a 1977 hit for David Bowie which could only make #24 depite being one of Mr Bowie's many iconic songs. They have Ellie Goulding (#2 this week) and Nicole Scherzinger to contend with next week. Olly Murs - Thinking Of Me enters at #4 A second successive top 5 hit then for last year's X-Factor runner up Olly Murs, following an X-Factor performance and lots of other promotion during the week. This is following hot on the heals of his #1 debut Please Don't Let Me Go. That has re-entered this week at #39 as a result of this new release and the Now 77 compilation album, the latter is responsible for several tracks rebounding this week. Olly's debut self titled album is due for release next week and could make a decent impact. Rihanna feat Drake - What's My Name climbs to #10 This week Rihanna gets herself a 15th UK top 10 hit in total as her forthcoming second single from Loud leaps up to #10. This is a collaboration with Drake and marks his highest chart placing and first top 10 hit in the UK, with only Find Your Love making the top 40 up until now. I would expect this to be a top 5 hit in the weeks to come, just how far it will get depends on the competition. Her name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty and his is Aubery Drake Graham, not sure which one is having identity issues there! Jessie J - Do It Like A Dude enters at #25 London based singer songwriter Jessica Cornish or Jessie J gets her debut UK hit this week as new single Do It Like A Dude enters at #25. Jessie co-wrote the Miley Cyrus hit Party In The USA and has also written for Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown and Christina Aguilera. Jessie J appeared on Later With Jools Holland recently and performed forthcoming single Price Tag, both tracks come from her forthcoming debut album Who You Are. Brett Domino - Gillian McKeith enters at #30 Brett Domino is the alter-ego of 24 year old musician Rob J Madin, as Brett Domino he is known as a bit of a You Tube celebrity for his comedy videos. Most of these videos are essentially comedy covers or medleys of well known songs such as Bad Romance and Beat It, as well as the hits of Justin Timberlake and Ellie Goulding. One of these to get a full release is not a cover but more of a comedy song about I'm A Celebrity contestant Gillian McKeith, containing lines such as "Oh Gilly, why u bein' so silly?" and "maybe it's because you look a bit like a goose"! Usher - More enters at #33 US singer Usher gives us more this week as he scores a third top 40 hit this year with a new entry at #33, expected to rise further on the lead up to full release. More is now Usher's 16th UK top 40 hit, including 4 #1's - 1997's You Make Me Wanna, 2004's Yeah and Burn and OMG earlier this year. Gorillaz feat Daley - Doncamatic enters at #37 Animated band Gorillaz make their return to the top 40 singles chart this week as Docamatic enters at #37. This is a track taken from the forthcoming reissue of Damon & co's third album Plastic Beach, the 3 previous singles from the album have failed to chart. They scored a huge #4 hit with debut Clint Eastwood in 2001, then #6 with 19-2000 and some other minor hits. In 2005, they scored a trio of top 10 hits with #2 Feel Good Inc, #1 Dare and #6 Dirty Harry. Doncamatic features vocals from Manchester based soul singer Daley and marks Gorillaz 9th top 40 hit in total. Take That stay at the top of the album chart This week's album chart saw a battle of the "boy" bands, with Take That holding steady at the top after selling over 1/2 million last week, after 2 weeks it is now the year's 4th biggest seller. JLS come in at #2 with their second album Outta This World, featuring their 2 #1s from this year The Club Is Alive and Love You More. In at #3 is Westlife with their 10th studio album Gravity, maintaining their 100% strike rate of top 3 albums. Opera star Russell Watson gets his second top 20 entry in as many weeks as his 8th studio album La Voce enters at #13, maintaining his 100% strike rate for top 20 albums. My Chemical Romance's 4th studio album enters at 14 entitled Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, featuring top 30 hit Na Na Na. Rapper Kanye West reveals his Beatuiful, Dark, Twisted Fantasy as his 5th album becomes his lowest charting yet, in at #16. Other new entries outside of the top 20 include Nicki Minaj, Josh Groban and Daniel O'Donnell. Personal opinion of me! I really am not getting into this new cover of Bowie's Heroes, it sucks all the life out of the original but it is for charity so good on them I guess! I absolutely love this new song from Olly Murs, it is very catchy even if it does sound a bit like his first one. Not too keen on Rihanna and Drake's What's My Name, but it may grow on me yet so I'm giving it time. Same for Jessie J, bit of a grower me thinks! Brett Domino's Gillian McKeith is quite funny but thankfully I don't see it becoming a hige hit. I quite like Gorillaz new single Doncamatic, not quite as good as Dare or Feel Good Inc though. I really like Kylie's new one Better Than Today, it's better than Get Outta My Way but still by no means her best song for me.

  15. JLS – Love You More enters at #1 This week’s chart topper has been very much a foregone conclusion, and unlike last week, the said song did indeed top the charts with ease. We are talking about JLS of course who famously came second in the X-Factor. The boys claim their 4th UK number one single this week with Love You More, which is now more than any other act to come from X-Factor. As well as being performed on X-Factor, Love You More is this year’s official Children In Need single with proceeds going to the Pudsey appeal to help disadvantaged children in the UK. Last year’s CIN single was Peter Key’s Animated video featuring a montage of hits including Can You Feel It, Don’t Stop and Hey Jude (more to follow on that). Ellie Goulding – Your Song climbs to #3 BBC Sound of 2010 poll winner Ellie Goulding gets her highest charting hit yet as Your Song leaps up from its #39 entry point last week to #3 this week. Ellie first charted with her first full release Starry Eyed, then hit #1 with debut album Lights, followed by Guns & Horses and The Writer. Ellie was chosen to sing the feature song on the latest John Lewis advert, a cover of Elton John’s signature #7 hit Your Song from 1970. This cover has now outpeaked the famous original, following a performance on Children In Need and heavy rotation of the TV advertisement. Far East Movement – Like A G6 enters at #6 Electro hip cop quartet Far East Movement make their debut this week as the hotly anticipated Like A G6 enters at #6, so it’s like a #6 then! Each of their members – Kev Nish, Prohgress, J-Splif and DJ Virman represent different generations of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Filipino ancestry within the Asian American community respectively. Like A G6 has already been a huge worldwide hit, making #1 in USA and New Zealand this year. The track also features US hip hop duo The Cataracs and a female singer known as Dev. Westlife – Safe enters at #10 Another of the nation’s biggest boy bands return to the charts this week, Westlife enter at #10 this week with Safe. Since their 1999 debut Swear It Again, Westlife have been nothing short of a phenomenon in terms of singles success. They made #1 with the first 7 of their single releases and had a further 7 chart toppers after that, in fact all but one of these have made the top 5 with 2008’s Us Against The World hitting #8. This new single Safe actually becomes their lowest charting yet, entering at #10 … a position that many bands would love to be able to reach. Rihanna feat Drake – What’s My Name enters at #18 Rihanna charts this week with the forthcoming second single to come from her latest album Loud, What’s My Name enters at #18. The single features US rapper Drake and joins her mega #1 hit Only Girl (In The World) to provide her with her 17th UK top 20 hit in just 5 years. Rihanna is certainly consistent in terms of success, if nothing else! Tinchy Stryder feat Chipmunk, etc. – Game Over enters at #22 Tinchy Stryder was a big star last year when he scored 2 #1s and a #2 album Catch 22. However this year has been so successful, hitting #10 with In My System but only #22 with Second Chance and his Third Strike album appears to have flopped. However he does match the peak of his last single with Game Over, not actually an official single but an album download. The track features many of today’s fellow rappers including Giggs, Professor Green, Tinie Tempah, Devlin, Example and Chipmunk. Alistair Griffin – Just Drive enters at #38 Already an established songwriter, in 2003 Alistair Griffin became well known as a contestant on the second series of Fame Academy. He then went on to score a #5 hit with Bring It On / My Lover’s Prayer, alongside Robin Gibb who first discovered him. The following year You & Me Tonight provided Alistair with a #18 hit, followed by other non-charting hits including one of the many covers of Hallelujah. Now he returns with Just Drive which was appropriately enough used for recent Formula One TV coverage. The Beatles – Hey Jude re-enters at #40 In case anyone didn’t know, this week’s big news (apart from an upcoming royal wedding) has been the long awaited addition of the entire Beatles back catalogue to iTunes. This has of course led to speculation that many of the tracks could re-enter the charts, with the possibility of a top 10 made up entirely of Beatles songs. This has in fact been far from reality, due to the tracks being made available mid week and there being so many individual songs available to choose from with dozens acknowledged as all time classics. Besides, the “fab 4” have sold a shed load of albums over the years, and most people who are interested would have bought those instead. However Hey Jude is the one track that has made it back in this week at #40, having been one of the band’s 17 UK #1s they achieved from 1963-1969. X-Factor had a Beatles night, so it is very possible for some others to make an appearance next week. Take That hit #1 with their Progress album on HUGE sales Over on the album charts there was no question who would be #1, more a question of how well would Progress by Take That sell. This is the band’s 6th studio album and 5th #1, selling over 1/2 million in its first week to become the century’s fastest selling album, almost managing to beat the all time record of 696k set by Oasis with Be Here Now in 1997. In a top 5 made up of 4 new entries, we find Rihanna’s fifth studio album Loud entering at #2. Behind her and SuBo, at #4 is Dutch opera star Andre Rieu with new album Moonlight Serenade, following up last year’s #1 album Forever Vienna. US superstar Pink has amassed 20 UK top 40 hits from 2000 to now, her Greatest Hits So Far comes in at #5 this week. Bruce Springsteen is in at #7 with an album of previously unreleased material from the Darkness On The Edge Of Town sessions, entitled The Promise. Other new entries this week include Shayne Ward’s third album Obsession, a Russell Watson compilation, McFly’s Above The Noise, Nelly’s 5.0, Norah Jones and Jools Holland. Opinionated bit! Love You More is a pretty good song compared to The Club Is Alive which I thought was dreadful, mind you I did grow to like Beat Again. However, I am happy to see this top the charts since it is for Children In Need. Take That have been unlucky once more stuck at #2 with The Flood, the Progress album is very different indeed and I do really like it after a few listens. Ellie Goulding’s lovely cover of Your Song is doing surprisingly well and I’m happy about that. More than can be said about the dirge that is Like A G6, can’t find any redeeming factor about it except that it’s not as bad as the Black Eyed Peas thing! Westlife’s new one is pretty average really, but at least it’s not another run of the mill cover. Rihanna and Drake’s What’s My Name isn’t too good really, better than that Tinchy collaboration … I wish it was Game Over for all of those artists. I really like the Alistair Griffin song Just Drive. I have always been a massive Beatles fan and am glad to see Hey Jude get back in, even if it should be 39 places higher.

  18. Rihanna - Only Girl (In the World) stays at #1 Another case this year where many thought that this week's chart topper was a foregone conclusion, however I don't think many expected Rihanna to hold on at #1 for a second week against the odds. Only Girl (In The World) has had sales over 100k for 3 weeks running now, meaning that it could well go on to sell more than Umbrella, which famously spent 10 weeks at #1 in 2007. Rihanna has had 14 top 5 hits and a further 5 top 20s, however none of these have peaked in the 6-10 region. It is unlikely to hang on for a 3rd week (mind you most thought that this week), however she may well add to her hits tally as her album Louder is released. Take That - The Flood enters at #2 This marks the return to the singles chart of one of the most talked about "boy" bands as 4 officially become 5 for Take That. Just in case there is anyone out there who has been living under a rock, here is a summary! Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Jason Orange, Mark Owen and Robbie Williams formed Take That in 1990. Since then the band have achieved major success, with 8 #1s from 9 releases between 1993 and 1996. The band split in 1996, only to reform in 2005 without Robbie Williams. They then achieved new success as a four-piece, scoring 8 consecutive top 20 hits including 3 #1s from their last 2 albums, which turned out to be their biggest yet. In July it was confirmed that Robbie Williams was back with the band and the 5 of them have now recorded a new album Progress, from which the first single The Flood debuts at #2 this week. McFly feat Taio Cruz - Shine A Light enters at #4 Now for the return of another male band who have had huge success since forming, McFly however have had a chart hit previously this year. The second single from McFly mark II is Shine A Light, a collaboration with UK R&B singer Taio Cruz. McFly formed in 2003 with all of their first 15 releases going top 10 including 7 #1s, with only 2008's #18 peaking comic relief double A sided Do Ya / Stay With Me missing out. Most of these hits have enjoyed a high initial peak before tumbing down the chart very quickly, this is what is commonly known as the "McFly effect". Earlier on this year, the band came back with a new sound and hit #6 with Party Girl which is swiftly followed up this week with Shine A Light going in at #4. Black Eyed Peas - The Time (Dirty Bit) enters at #11 US hip hop group Black Eyed Peas make their return to the upper reaches of the chart this week as new single The Time (Dirty Bit) enters at #11. The new track was released in the middle of the week with little promotion of airplay prior to that, but still manages to make top 20 with ease. This is now the group's 14th top 20 hit in total since their 2003 break through Where Is The Love, they of course scored 3 #1 hits last year Boom Boom Pow, million selling I Gotta Feeling and Meet Me Halfway. This is the first single to come from forthcoming new album The Beginning, an odd case of the beginning coming after The END! Shayne ward - Gotta Be Somebody enters at #12 This week marks the return of 2005 X-Factor winner Shayne Ward, as new single Gotta Be Somebody enters at #12 after midweek predictions of top 5. Since winning X-Factor and scoring a massive #1 with That's My Goal (the only winner's song not to be a cover), Shayne hit #2 with No Promises in 2006 then #2 with If That's OK With You / No U Hang Up then #6 with the title track to his 2nd album Breathless in 2007. He has been absent from the charts for 3 years, now he comes back with a cover of Gotta Be Somebody, a #20 hit for Nickelback in 2008. This comes from Shayne's forthcoming 3rd album Obsession due out this week. Pink - Raise Your glass enters at #13 Alecia Beth Moore makes her return to the charts this week, under the rather better known name of P!nk, Raise Your Glasss enters at #13 ... unlucky for some?! This is Pink's 23rd UK release so far and comes from her forthcoming compilation appropriately entitled Greatest Hits So Far. Since her 2000 debut, Pink has scored 14 top 10 hits including 3 #1s Lady Marmalade (with Christina Aguilera, Mya and Lil Kim), 2002's Just Like A Pill and 2008's So What. She was last seen in the top 40 with the title track to her massively successful Funhouse album last year. Gyptian - Hold You enters at #16 Jamaican reggae singer Windel Beneto Edwards gets his debut chart hit in the UK under the name of Gyptian, entering at a fairly respectible #16 this week. Gyptian won 2004's Star Search talent competition and has had several hits in his homeland of Jamaica but none in the UK until now. He aparently took his name from his habit of tying a shirt around his head and twisting his chin hair like an Egyptian pharaoh. Time will tell if Gyptian can follow in the footsteps of fellow countryman and reggae star Bob Marley, in terms of success. Royal British Legion - 2 Minutes Silence enters at #20 In at #20 is something of a unique track, in that it consists purely of 2 minutes worth of silence and no music at all. It has been released by the Royal British Legion, with the proceeds from sale of the track going to the charity. Many people have suggested that a cover of this be released by the X-Factor winner this year, however there is a campaign to get another silent track to #1 for xmas instead of the X-Factor winner's actul song. My Chemical Romance - Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na) enters at #31 US emo-rock band My Chemical Romance make their return to the charts this week with their first proper new single in 3 years, Na Na Na enters at a rather low #31. The band formed in 2002 and had minor success in 2004 with top 20 hits I'm Not OK (I Promise) and Helena. Then in 2006 they got their first #1 hit single with Welcome To The Black Parade, which was followed by top 10 hits Famous Last Words and Teenagers as well as the #13 hit I Don't Love You. Last year they did release a cover of Desolation Row as a split single with Prison Fight by Tyler Bates from the Watchmen OST, however it failed to chart. Na Na Na is the first single to be taken from MCR's upcoming 4th studio album, following on from the hugely successful Black Parade. Susan Boyle tops the album charts Britain's Got Talent runner up Susan Boyle scores her second chart topping album this week as she shows everyone The Gift of her voice again, folling on from last year's I Dreamed A Dream. Bon Jovi hold steady just behind SuBo, just behind Cheryl at #3 comes James Blunt's 3rd studio album entitled Some Kind Of Trouble following on from his first 2 chart toppers BAck To Bedlam and All The Lost Souls. Featuring #1 single F**k You / Forget You, Cee Lo Green enters at #10 with his album Lady Killer ... you can be sent to jail for that! There are 2 new entries of remakes inside the top 20 - Ray Davies with his friends including Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi at #12, and Elvis with Viva Elvis in at #19. Opinion Whilst I really like Only Girl by Rihanna and think it's her best song yet, I would have preferred the brilliant The Flood by Take That to be #1 instead as I prefer that song. Shine A Light is probably the best McFly song yet and actually quite good, but that doesn't say much given that most of their previous output has been tripe! Talking of tripe, this new Black Eyed Peas song is utterly terrible and ruins a classic song very badly, personally I prefer the 2 Minute Silence! Shayne Ward's new one is actually quite a decent cover of the Nickelback track, but they really should have given him some original material to do. Raise Your Glass is very good if not quite Pink's best, there again I have loved almost all of her output so far and this is no exception ... she's great live too. Gyptian's Hold You is actually quite catchy and it's refreshing to see a reggae track make an impact on the charts here. Not keen on My Chemical Romance's new one, the only one of their's I've actually ever liked is Welcome To The Black Parade. I really love Ellie Goulding's gorgeous cover of Elton John's Your Song and hope it can go on to be a decent hit. Not a fan of SuBo, but really like James Blunt's new album and also Cee Lo Green's one isn't too bad either.
  19. Rihanna - Only Girl (In The World) climbs to #1 Barbadan star Rihanna claims her third #1 single as lead singer this week, as Only Girl (In The World) footsteps of Take A Bow by climbing from a #2 entry to #1. This is due in no small way to her X-Factor performance, the continuing popularity and airplay the track has been receiving, coupled with it having a wider appeal than the singles from Rated R. Rihanna will have a fight on her hands to remain at #1 as she'll need to hold back the flood caused by Take That releasing their new single as a 5 piece! Alexis Jordan - Happiness enters at #3 US singer songwriter Alexis Jordan gets her debut UK hit as Happiness becomes a bit of a surprise top 3 hit, entering at #3 this week. Alexis was a contestant on the first series of America's Got Talent, also also sung the US National Anthem for the Air Force Academy at the age of 12, as well as opening for Smokey Robinson at a Stevie Wonder tribute concert. This Alexis Jordan is not to be confused with another Barbadan swimmer of the same name. Saturdays - Higher climbs to #10 This week saw the rather belated full release of The Saturdays new single Higher, including a new version which features rapper Flo Rida. Flo Rida has made #1 twice in the UK, both times in direct competition with the Saturdays - 2009's Right Round beat their cover of Just Can't Get Enough for Comic Relief and earlier this year Club Can't Handle Me beat Missing You at the last minute. This is the girl's 8th UK top 10 hit in total out of 9 releases to date, and was looking like missing the top 20 until the full release this week. Will i Am feat Nicki Minaj & Cheryl Cole - Check It Out enters at #11 The #11 new entry this week belongs to US rapper, singer songwriter and producer William James Adams jnr, better known as Will i am. He first rose to fame as the Black Eyed Peas frontman, and as a producer has worked with artists such as Cheryl Cole, Daddy Yankee and Usher. Will i am has also produced several tracks to be included on Michael Jackson's forthcoming posthumous album. Check It Out samples Buggles 1979 hit Video Killed The Radio Star and is written and performed alongside pink haired US rapper Nicki Minaj, with added vocals from Cheryl Cole. Check It Out is now the second hit single to feature Will, following on from Usher's #1 hit OMG. Shakespear's Sister - Stay re-enters at #12 So the X-Factor effect comes into play once more this week, as another of the tracks to be performed makes a significant re-entry. Shakespear's Sister are a duo consisting of Bananarama singer Sionbhan Fahey and guitarist Marcella Detroit, who were active and had several hit from 1989 until their split in 1993. The biggest of these hits was Stay which was #1 for 8 weeks in 1992, making it the longest running #1 by an all female duo / group. Now it returns to the charts at #12 after a notable performance by X-Factor conestant Cher Lloyd. Neyo - One In A Million enters at #20 Coming in at #20 this week is the second single to be taken from US pop R&B singer Neyo's 4th album Libra Scale, the chance of that being 1 In 1,000,000! This follows on from his chart topping hit Beautiful Monster from earlier this year, which was fairly quick to drop down the chart after entering at the top. One In A Million is now Neyo's 8th top 20 hit in total since his 2006 debut #1 hit So Sick, the biggest seller still remains 2008 massive #1 hit Closer. Tinchy Stryder feat Taio Cruz - Second Chance enters at #22 UK rapper / grime artist Tinchy Stryder first hit big last year with #3 hit Take Me Back, #1s Number One and Never Leave You, as well as #14 cover of Olive's You're Not Alone. The first of his big hits was alongside Taio Cruz, with whom he teams up again for a Second chance but can only make a relatively low #22. This follows his #10 hit In My System and is taken from his forthcoming album Third Strike, this can be seen as the second chance from his third strike ... what next, fourth shot?! Nadine Coyle - Insatiable enters at #26 Entering at a rather surprisingly low #26 this week is a Girls Aloud member who is not Cheryl Cole, it is Nadine Coyle with her debut solo single Insatiable. This low position will raise a few eyebrows, this is due to several factors combined. The track was only released on Monday instead of Sunday thus losing a full day's worth of sales and Sunday is usually the biggest sales day of the week for single downloads. Nadine had to concel several live performances and not received much airplay, and is not gereally proved to be a popular song. Her debut album of the same name is due out next week, but exclusive to Tesco. Roll Deep feat Alesha Dixon - Take Control enters at #26 London based grime collective Roll Deep score their third hit single of the year as Take Control enters at #29, another track to perform less well than perhaps expected this week. Take Control follows on from their 2 chart toppers Good Times and Green Light from earlier this year, and features singer and Stricly judge Alesha Dixon. This follows Alesha's own top 20 hit Drummer Boy and is taken from Roll Deep's new album Winner Stays On due out next week. Jamiroquai - White Knuckle Ride enters at #39 UK funk band Jamiroquai make their return to the top 40 this week, albeit rather lower down than they have been used to. The band were formed in 1992 with Jay Kay at the helm, taking their name from a blend of Jam session and "iroquai" the name of a North American tribe. When You Gonna Learn was Jamiroquai's first single making #28, since then they have had 18 top 20 hits with their peak being in the late 1990's with radio staples like Virtual Insanity, Cosmic Girl, Alright, Little L and their only #1 Deeper Underground. Lead single from their 7th studio album was to be Blue Skies, but instead they went with the lesser known White Knuckle Ride which they performed on X Factor ... result a #39 entry for the track. Cheryl Cole tops the albums chart Cheryl Cole scores her second consecutive #1 solo album as Messy Little Raindrops sells bucketloads to hit #1, ahead of Bon Jovi's second Greatest Hits album which continues their run of 4 successive # 2 albums. UK female singer songwriter Rumer's debut album Seasons Of My Soul enters at #3 after top 20 single Slow and follow up single Aretha. After an ITV show, Rod Stewart enters at #5 with his 5th in the American Songbook series, Neil Diamond enters at #8 with his covers album Dreams just behind Jamiroquai's lowest charting album to date Rock Dust Light Star at #7. Other new entries in this week's crowded album chart include Peter Andre at #10, Neyo at #11, Elaine Paige + Friends and Pet Shop Boys. Personal Opinion I am happy to see Rihanna top the charts with Only girl as it is easily my favourite of hers to date, I'm not keen on Alexis Jordan's Happiness really. I think Higher is one of the best the Saturdays have done, better than Missing You anyway ... but why the new Flo Rida version? I don't like Check It Out much and think that Nicki Minaj sounds absolutely terrible, on the other hand I absolutely love the haunting Stay by Shakespear's Sister. Neyo's One In A Million is quite good, as is Nadine's song but nothing speical really. Both Tinchy's and Roll Deep's songs are absolutely dire in my opinion and I'm glad to them both flop. I find White Knuckle Ride really average, especially as I have loved much of Jamiroquai's work in the last.
  20. Thanks zeus, for some reason I didn't count Run This Town. Thanks also for the additional information, always good to see these sort of things.
  21. Cheryl Cole – Promise This enters at #1 To the surprise of very few, Cheryl Cole/Tweedy goes straight in at the top with her new single Promise This. This is the second fastest selling single this year (behind Helping Haiti) and the second in a row to have sales of over 100k. Cheryl of course performed this track on the X-Factor, which in case anyone has been living under a rock, she is one of the 4 judges on! It was around this time last year when Fight For This Love hit the top on sales of over 200k, followed by 2 further top 5 hits - 3 Words and Parachute. Cheryl also features on Will.I.Am’s new single, a possible contender for next week’s #1. Rihanna – Only Girl (In The World) enters at #2 So Barbadan superstar Rihanna gets her 8th #2 hit in total this week as she is almost the only girl to sell over 100k and yet only debut at #2! Robyn Rihanna Fenty first came to prominence in 2005 with her debut single Pon De Replay which was the first of her #2s, and has had no less than 16 top 20 hits out of 17 releases to date, a further 3 including collaborations. Umbrella of course was her biggest hit, staying at #1 for 10 weeks in 2007, Take A Bow is her only other UK chart topper so far. Only Girl is the first single release to be taken from her sixth studio album entitled Loud, due out in a fortnight. Tim Berg – Seek Bromance enters at #13 Swedish DJ Tim Berg (aka Avicii) gets his first top 40 hit this week as Seek Bromance seeks a place at #13, unlucky for some! This track is a mashup between Tim Berg’s instrumental Bromance and Amanda Wilson’s dance track What You Seek. Amanda Wilson is a singer with house / dance act Freemasons, with whom she scored 2 top 20 hits - Love On My Mind and Watching, in 2005 and 2006 respectively. Peter Andre – Defender enters at #14 Peter Andre certainly is a Defender this week as he is back in the top 20, despite the CD single only being available in ASDA and not selling great as a download. This is the lead single to come from his upcoming 6th studio album, due out shortly. Peter has recently become better known for his reality TV show appearances and split from Jordan than his music, which first got him noticed. However he first made his musical name with Mysterious Girl which was a #2 hit during the 1990s then #1 in 2004. He was last seen in the top 40 with #4 hit Behind Closed Doors last year. Devlin feat Yasmin – Runaway enters at #15 Grime artist Jimmy Devlin scores his second top 40 hit this week and his biggest to date as Runaway makes #15. Having been a member of the O.T Crew alongside Dogzilla, Deeperman and Syer Bars, Devlin had minor solo success with #31 hit Brainwashed earlier this year. Runaway features vocals from DJ Yasmin. Devlin was also named by the BBC in their "Sound Of" list of the most promising music acts for 2010, alongside the likes of Ellie Goulding and Marina & The Diamonds. Eminem feat Lil Wayne – No Love enters at #35 US superstar rapper Eminem gets himself another top 40 hit this week, alongside serial collaborator Lil Wayne! No Love features a small sample from Haddaway’s 1990’s hit What Is Love, and comes from Eminem’s huge selling Recovery album. This is his 22nd top 40 hit in total, with all but one of these making top 20, expect this track to follow suit in the next few weeks leading up to full release. James Blunt – Stay The Night enters at #37 Former army man James Blunt makes his return at #37 as he invites you to Stay The Night! James Blunt first came to prominence with debut single High in 2004, which made #16 upon rerelease. He is of course best known for the huge #1 hit You’re Beautiful, also from his debut album Back To Bedlam. The first track from forthcoming album #3 is Stay The Night, his 7th single in total to make the top 40. Kings Of Leon still kings of the album chart After huge sales last week, Come Around Sundown stays at #1 for Kings Of Leon this week. Entering at #3 just behind a climb for Mr Bubble is X-Factor winner Joe McElderry, who finds his Wide Awake album doing better than the single which could only manage #6. Entering at #4 is boyband the Wanted with their self titled debut album, both singles are still in the chart with All Time Low climbing to #28. Another case of album doing better than lead single is Taylor Swift, after Mine could only scrape #30 last week, the album Speak Now enters at #6. After a song entitled Barbra Streisand hit #3, comes the actual singer Barbra Streisand with her Ultimate Collection in at #8 this week, her sixth hits collection in total. Elton John & US singer songwriter Leon Russell enter at #11 with Union, Elton’s 30th studio album in total. The Soldiers get their second hit album with Letters Home in at #10, as does Charlotte Church (second pop album anyway) in at #xx. Opinion Whilst I must admit to liking Cheryl Cole’s Promise This (maybe I’ve been brainwashed), I don’t think it deserves to be a #1 hit. I love Rihanna’s Only Girl and certainly prefer it to anything from her last album, it may even be my favourite yet fro Rihanna. Not particularly keen on Nelly’s Just A Dream, Runaway by Devlin or that Seek Bromance … none of the 3 songs do much for me to be honest. I must confess that Peter Andre’s new song Defender is surprisingly good, given the kack he has released previously! I’ve always really liked James Blunt and this new song Stay The Night hasn’t disappointed me. Not sure about Eminem / Lil Wayne yet, it’s ok but not nearly as good as some of Em’s work in the past.

  23. Bruno Mars – Just The Way You Are goes back to #1 So we have a return to #1 for Bruno Mars with Just The Way You Are, which debuted at #1 4 weeks ago and now finds itself back at the top with its highest weekly sale of around 110k. This as you may have guessed is due to The X Factor, as the track was covered by a contestant last week. This now has a perfectly symmetrical chart run of 1-2-4-2-1, and is likely to be beaten by Cheryl and Rihanna next week. The Wanted – Heart Vacancy enters at #2 The highest new entry this week goes to boy band The Wanted as they fill this week’s vacancy at #2. This is the boys’ second single, following up the chart topping All Time Low, which itself goes back up to #34 this week. The group’s debut self titled album is released next week, expected to make an impact near the top. Katy Perry – Firework enters at #5 Rocketing in to #5 this week is Katy Perry’s new single, following from a performance on X-Factor. This swiftly follows in the footsteps of #1 hit California Gurls and #2 hit Teenage Dream to give Katy a third top 5 hit this year. Firework is now Katy’s 7th top 5 hit in total with only Thinking Of You and Waking Up In Vegas missing out so far. Her Teenage Dream album also occupies the #5 slot in the albums listings. Jay Sean feat Nicki Minaj - 2012 (It Ain't The End) enters at #9 UK singer songwriter, rapper, beatboxer and record producer Kamaljit Singh Jhooti, better known as the rather easier pronounced name of Jay Sean makes a return to the upper reaches of the charts. Rishi Rich Project were an Asian music project showcasing new talent, of which Jay Sean was a member when he made his debut in 2003 with Dance with You (Nachna Tere Naal) which made #12. Under his own name he scored 2 top 10 hits with Eyes On You and Stolen making #6 and #4 respectively, followed by a few minor hits in 2008, last year he had his biggest hit peaking at #3 with Down. Jay was last seen with #13 hit Do You Remember and also featured on Kevin Rudolf's hit I Made It earlier this year. There is a phenomenon that 2012 will see the end of the world, Jay obviously disagrees as 2012 (It Ain't The End) makes #9! N-Dubz - Best Behaviour enters at #10 UK hip hop collective N-Dubz score their 9th top 40 hit this week as Dappy & co's Best Behaviour seems to have paid off! They first came on the scene with 2006's #26 hit You Better Not Waste My Time but did not get a top 10 hit until last year when I Need You made #5 as their own biggest hit to date. They did feature on Tinchy Stryder's Number One earlier last year which hit #1. They were last seen this year when We dance On made #6 taken from the soundtrack of Street Dance. Best Behaviour is taken from their forthcoming 3rd album. Nelly - Just A Dream enters at #11 US rapper Nelly makes his return to the upper reaches of the UK charts this week as his new single enters at #11, but is it just a dream? It seems not, as he gets his 17th top 40 hit since his 2000 debut Country Grammar (Hot S**t)! Last time Nelly had a top 10 hit was in 2005 with #6 peaking N'Dey Say, he has had 2 top 20 hits since, the last being 2008's Body On Me. Just A Dream has been released digitally without any promotion or significant airplay as yet, so expect this to become a massive hit in the weeks to come. Diana Vickers - My Wicked Heart enters at #13 More to follow! Taylor Swift - Mine enters at #30 More to follow! Skepta feat Preeya Kalidas - Cross My Heart enters at #31 More to follow! Kings Of Leon top the albums chart More to follow! Personal opinion More to follow!
