Olly Murs debuts at #1 with Please Don’t Let Me Go X-Factor runner up from last year Olly Murs enters straight in at #1 with his debut single, in what has been a closely run competition for the top. Oliver Stanley Murs is a 28 year singer songwriter from Whitham in Essex, auditioning for last year’s X-Factor and wowing judges with his rendition of Stevie Wonder’s Superstition. Since coming second to Joe McElderry, Olly has been hard at work on his debut album which is due out in November. He may have come second on X-Factor but he wins the chart battle with Katy Perry, however time will tell if he can sustain this level of success. Katy Perry – Teenage Dream enters at #2 US singer songwriter Katy Perry first made her name in a big way in 2008 as she topped the UK charts with her debut and controversial single I Kissed A Girl. This was followed by the release of debut album One Of The Boys, which spawned another huge top 5 hit Hot n Cold, #27 Thinking Of You and #19 Waking Up In Vegas. Last year she collaborated with 3 Oh 3 on Starstrukk and with Timbaland on If We Ever Meet Again, both tracks hit #3 and further established her name. In May 2010, California Gurls went straight to #1 and has proved to be another massive hit. This week both her 2nd album and the 2nd single from that album have been released this week, entitle Teenage Dream. The single is in at #2 and the album as expected is at #1. Pepper & Piano – You Took My Heart enters at #7 Must Be The Music is a Sky One music talent contest featuring judges Dizzee Rascal, Sharleen Spiteri and Jamie Cullum. The show is intended to rival ITV’s X Factor, however unlike the latter which is limited to “singers”, it is open to all musicians who are allowed to play their own compositions. Moreover the acts that do make the semi-finals will have their tracks released on iTunes and Sky TV’s web site and immediately receive profits. This is what has happened this week, and thus the most popular of the acts Pepper & Piano have entered at #7 this week. Pepper & Piano may not be a household name yet, however they can now boast a top 10 hit to their name with You Took My Heart. They are a duo consisting of singer Katie Pepper and pianist Emma Alkazraji (hence the name Pepper & Piano). Adele – Make You Feel My Love re-enters at #24 UK singer songwriter Adele Laurie Blue Adkins achieved big success in 2008 with #2 hit Chasing Pavements and subsequent top 20 hits Cold Shoulder and Hometown Glory. As her fourth single, Adele released a cover of Bob Dylan’s Make You Feel My Love which made #26. Now after being used in the new series of X Factor, the track beats it original peak by re-entering at #24. Kanye West feat Dwele – Power enters at #36 T his week sees the return of US rapper Kanye Omari West, as his new single has the Power to enter at #36. Kanye first made his mark in 2003 when Through The Wire hit #9, being inspired by a near fatal car accident he was involved in. He then went on to receive critical acclaim and huge success with his first 4 album and a total of 9 top 10 hits, including 207 #1 Stronger. This new single Power samples 21st Century Schizoid Man by rock band King Crimson, and is taken from his forthcoming fifth album Dark Twisted Fantasy. Lil Wayne feat Drake – Right Above It enters at #37 Rapper Lil Wayne gets another top 40 hit to his name, albeit only his second as lead artist, this is also Drake’s second top 40 appearance. Lil Wayne first charted in 2005 alongside Destiny’s Child on their #4 hit Soldier, he has also featured on a further 2 top 5 hits – Kevin Rudolf’s Let It Rock and Jay Sean’s Down. Lollipop hit #26 in 2008 for Lil Wayne alone, Find Your Love hit #24 just a few weeks ago from Drake. Now the 2 singers collaborate for #37 entry Right Above It, for which there is no clean version so daytime radio and TV cannot play the song. There is actually another new entry right above it! Katy Perry – Teenage Dream is the new #1 album As has been widely expected, Katy Perry hits #1 with her second album Teenage Dream, which easily eclipses the rather lowly #11 placing of One Of The Boys. Eminem drops back down to #2 after yo-yoing between #2 and #1 for the last 10 weeks. Several albums reach a new peak this week, perhaps the most surprising of them is Biffy Clyro’s Only Revolutions at #3 and there is also Sigh No More by Mumford & Sons at #4. These come ahead of 2 new entries, in at #6 is Pretty Reckless with their debut album Light Me Up and US rockers Disturbed who achieve their highest peak yet at #7 with their fifth album Asylum. UK indie rock band Everything Everything become the latest act to appear in the BBC Sound Of 2010 poll and get a hit album, Man Alive comes in at #17. Personal opinion I am happy that Olly has managed to get a #1 with Please Don’t Let Me Go as it is a rather good song, in a Will Young sort of way. However I do feel that Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream is a better song and should have made #1 instead, however I am very happy that she’s finally managed a #1 album. I rather like the Pepper & Piano song, it is really nice and different from the usual sort of urban stuff dominating. Talking of which I do not like either Kanye West’s or Lil Wayne’s new songs and think they are just generic rubbish.

007 Chart Commentary
Taio Cruz explodes to #1 with his stick of Dynamite Heading a chart with no less than 10 new entries is Taio Cruz, who now has his second chart topper in his home country. Over the past few months since the track’s release in other countries, Dynamite has been gathering airplay and exposure. Taio released his debut album Departure in 2008, which was preceded by minor hits I Just Wanna Know and Moving On. He then made his breakthrough with #5 hit Come On Girl followed by top 20 hits I Can Be and She’s Like A Star. In September 2009, Break Your Heart provided Taio with his first chart topper, followed by flop single No Other One then top 10 Dirty Picture. Dynamite is taken from his forthcoming Rokstarr Collection which also features tracks from both of his previous albums. Katy B – Katy On A Mission enters at #5 This week again sees last week’s #1 from Roll Deep drop out of the top 3, but ahead of the second highest new entry. This comes from UK garage / house singer songwriter Katy Brien whose mission to get a top 5 hit has succeeded as she debuts at #5. Katy B has worked extensively with Ms Dynamite, Benga and also a worker at ex-pirate radio station Rinse FM. She also features on Magnetic Man’s forthcoming second single Perfect Stranger and Count & Sinden’s album track Hold Me. Brandon Flowers – Crossfire enters at #8 US indie band The Killers first made their commercial breakthrough in 2004 with debut album Hot Fuss and a re-releases of earlier flop Somebody Told Me, which then peaked at #3. Mr Brightside is probably one of the ultimate sleeper hits, having peaked at #10 on re-release and only spending 3 weeks in the top 40 but staying in the top 100 for a total of 71 weeks to date. Their highest charting single came in 2006 as When You Were Young made #2 followed by 2 #15 hits, Human hit #3 in 2008 and became the band’s best seller. This week lead singer Brandon Flowers scores his first solo hit and gets caught in the Crossfire, entering as he does at #8. Rumer – Slow enters at #16 Pakistan born UK singer songwriter Rumer debuts this week at #16 with her debut single release entitled Slow. Not to be confused with Kylie’s hit of the same name, the title of the track describes the style perfectly. When Rumer was discovered by Burt Bacharach, he reportedly paid for her flight to California so he could hear her sing. Aggro Santos – Saint Or Sinner enters at #19 Brazilian born UK rapper Aggro Santos scores his second top 20 hit this week with Saint Or Sinner, that depends on your point of view. This follows up his massive top 5 hit Candy with ex-Pussycat Doll member Kimberly Wyatt. Earlier on this year, Aggro (real name Yuri) Santos toured with Britain’s Got Talent winners Diversity on a 27 date UK tour. He has a debut album Aggro Santos.com due out before the end of the year apparently. Hurts – Wonderful Life enters at #21 UK synthpop duo Hurts get their very first top 40 hit this week, consisting of vocalist Theo Hutchcraft and synth player Adam Anderson. The duo have been featured on BBC’s Sound Of 2010 poll and released their debut single Better Than Love in May but could only make #50. Wonderful Life improves on that rather significantly by entering at #21, however not as big as in countries like Russia, Germany and Austria. This is not to be confused with previous hits of the same title from the likes of Louis Armstrong and Black. Ke$ha – Take It Off enters at #28 Kesha Rose Sebert gets her forth top 40 hit to be lifted from her debut album Animal, in the form of Take It Off. She first featured on Flo Rida’s chart topping Right Round then scored a huge hit last year with Tik Tok, peaking at #4. Blah Blah Blah was the second single which peaked at #11 featuring 3 Oh 3, followed by #13 hit Your Love Is My Drug. Her last appearance was alongside 3 Oh 3 on their #7 peaking hit My First Kiss, after featuring on Taio Cruz’s #6 hit Dirty Picture. Now Take It Off climbs into the top 40 at #28, I fully expect this to become Ke$ha’s seventh top 20 hit within the next few weeks. Stromae – Alors On Danse enters at #33 Alors On Danse is the latest non-English language dance hit to be causing a sensation here in the UK after European success. The singer behind it is Belgian / Rwandan singer Paul van Haver, going under the name of Stromae. The single was released in the UK 3 weeks ago and entered at a rather lowly #41, dropping to #46 last week, this week it is finally showing signs of becoming a decent hit in the UK. Biffy Clyro – God & Satan enters at #36 Scottish band Biffy Clyro get themselves another top 40 hit this week as God & Satan comes in at #36, after looking very much like a flop. This is now the band’s 15th straight top 40 hit in a run stretching back to 2003, 7 of these have made top 20 and only 2 made top 10. This is quite an achievement given that longevity doesn’t seem to be their strong point and also the fact that this is the band’s 6th single from their latest album Only Revolutions, also their biggest selling album to date. Pretty Reckless – Miss Nothing enters at #39 Rockers Pretty Reckless scrape in to get their second top 40 hit this week, following on from their #16 debut Make Me Wanna Die. Fronted by American Gossip Girl actress Taylor Momsen, the band’s debut album Light Me Up is due for release later this year. Well they almost missed something … the top 40! Eminem reclaims #1 album again with Recovery Not much to report in this week's album chart, apart from Eminem returning to #1 yet again for what is his 7th non-consecutive week with Recovery, ahead of several other long running albums in the top 10. This week's highest new entry is the second album from the Klaxons, who follow in the footsteps of the Hoosiers last week by following up their #1 debut album with a #10 entry. 90's band The Eels return to the upper reaches of the album chart as their new album Tomorrow Morning enters the top 20. Other new entries include a hits collection from Bay City Rollers, One Night Only's 2nd album, Darren Styles and Count & Sinden. Personal opinion I am delighted to see Dynamite debut at #1 for Taio Cruz but my problem is that it took so long for the track to be released here in the UK, after other countries getting it and months of radio play. I'm not keen on Katy B's song, as I don't really like dubstep type of music. I really like the new Brandon Flowers solo track Crossfire, it has that great Killers sound but is also that bit different at the same time. Slow certainly describes Rumer's song, I quite like it but not overly keen tbh. Saint Or Sinner by Aggo Santos is even worse that the monstrosity that was Candy, however Wonderful Life by Hurts is really good. Kesha's Take It Off is far better than her last 2 singles but I'm still not keen at all. I quite like Alors On Danse and really like God & Satan ... one of Biffy's best imo.

007 Chart Commentary
Saturdays can’t handle Flo Rida for number 1! In one of the tightest chart battles for #1 in quite some time, Flo Rida manages to snatch the #1 off the Saturdays for the second time. The Saturdays have been ahead for most of the week, however in the end Flo Rida just proved too much of a challenge and consequently climb a place to the top. Oddly enough this track has now matched the initial chart run of We No Speak Americano by going 5-2-1 after an early release. Club Can’t Handle Me is Flo’s second UK chart topper, last year Flo Rida came Right Round to beat the Saturdays to #1. Saturdays – Missing You enters at #3 So the first chart topper for girl group Saturdays still remains elusive as new single Missing You debuts at #3. The group have been promoting in all sorts of ways this week as is also the norm for acts like JLS, McFly and The Wanted. Mobile downloads, single signings, TV appearances, several remixes and physical CDs have doubtlessly helped the Saturdays achieve their third top 3 single, with quite respectable sales too. Out of 8 releases so far only Work has missed the top 10, peaking at #22 … so it didn’t work out too well then! Tinchy Stryder – In My System enters at #10 UK grime artist Kwasi Danquah made his first breakthrough in January last year under the better known name of Tinchy Stryder. Take Me Back made #3 as a collaboration with Taio Cruz, that was followed by N-Dubz collaboration Number One which lived up to its name. Never Leave You also hit #1 alongside Amelle Berrabah followed by #14 cover of Olive’s You’re Not Alone. Now the first proper single to come from Tinchy’s forthcoming third album aptly named Third Strike, In My System enters at #10. This features vocals from Jodie Connor, next single Invisible features no less a figure than Katherine Jenkins. Ellie Goulding – The Writer enters at #19 UK singer songwriter Ellie Goulding topped the BBC Sound Of 2010 poll and has been very hotly tipped as the next big superstar. Ellie has started her career not too badly, hitting #4 with first proper single Starry Eyed then topping the charts with debut album Lights. Subsequent single Guns & Horses made #26, however this week The Writer goes better by making the top 20 in at #19. The release of both singles has seen the album re-enter the top 20 also so whilst not a huge success, Ellie’s singles and album have done quite good so far. Devlin – Brainwashed enters at #31 Now for the next new UK grime artist to score a top 40 hit, step forward Devlin who is another atris to appear in the aforementioned BBC Sound. Devlin is a current member of 2 grime collective groups – OT Crew and The Movement. Debut single Shot Music featuring rapper Giggs was released earlier this year but failed to chart, new single Brainwashed enters at #31 this week. Both tracks will appear on his debut album which is scheduled for release next year. Eminem’s Recovery album goes back to #1 again Eminem was demoted to #2 last week behind Arcade Fire, now he recovers once again by reclaiming the top spot for a sixth week in total. There are no newcomers to speak of, with potential big new releases from Travie McCoy and Skream entering outside the top 40. This week, the XX reach a new peak of #10 as they continue to climb with their self titled album. Rockers 30 Seconds To Mars also reach a brand new peak of #15 with This Is War, no doubt helped by latest single Closer To The Edge. Personal opinion I am fairly happy to see Flo Rida at #1 as I have grown to quite like Club Can’t Handle Me, I do like Love the Way You Lie as well. Missing You is hardly the Saturdays best song but not bad, however they just seem too desperate to get a #1 on fanbase rather than quality. So for that reason I am glad they didn’t manage to make #1 as it will no doubt plummet down the charts next week. I have hated all of Tinchy’s previous songs, however In My System is slightly more tolerable for me although I still don’t like it much. However I do love Ellie Goulding’s The Writer, one of the highlights from her wonderful Lights album. I must be one of the few not to have heard Alors On Danse yet so I will reserve judgement on that for now. I haven’t been Brainwashed by Devlin so that can be added to my hate list as well!

007 Chart Commentary
Neyo gets his third chart topper with Beautiful Monster US pop / R&B singer Shaffer Chimere Smith gets his third UK chart topper, better known by his stage name of Neyo. Neyo first made his name of these shores when his debut single So Sick hit #1, this was followed by top 5 hits Sexy Love and Because Of You then #1 hit Closer in 2008 and #6 hit Miss Independent. Beautiful Monster is the first single to come from his forthcoming 4th album Libra Scale due for release later on this year. Next week's #1 is likely to be between the Saturdays, Tinchy Stryder and Flo Rida. Flo Rida feat David Guetta - Club Can't Handle Me climbs to #2 Rising 3 places this week is the latest David Guetta production, Club Can't Handle Me by Flo Rida. Flo now claims his 3rd UK top 3 hit, following in the footsteps of debut hit Low and the Dead Or Alive sampling Right Round alongside Ke$ha. This track has gone back up to #1 on iTunes so may hit #1 next week, coincidentally the last track to rise 5-2 was We No Speak Americano by Yolanda Be Cool and it made #1 the following week. Hoosiers - Choices enters at #11 The Hoosiers first made their name in 2007 when their first single Worried About Ray made #5, this was then followed by #4 hit Goodbye Mr A. Their debut album The trick To Life hit #1 towards the end of 2007, Worst Case Scenario proved to be just that by peaking at #76, however single #4 faired better as Cops & Robbers made #24. This week sees the return of the band as enough people chose to buy Choices to make it #11. The band's name is not to be comfused with the 1986 film of the same name about a US basketball team. DJ Fresh - Gold Dust enters at #24 UK based drum & bass artist DJ Fresh and former member of Bad Company gets his very first solo top 40 hit this week as Gold Dust enters at #24. Previously known simply as Fresh, he has worked with artists ranging from Pet Shop Boys, DJ Shadow, Apollo 440 to Andy C and Grooverider, and also has released several singles from 1999 to now. Not exactly like Gold Dust but good enough to be his very first top 40 hit it seems! Marina & The Diamonds - Oh No enters at #38 Oh no it's a third straight top 40 hit for Welsh singer songwriter Marina Diamandis, better known as Marina & The Diamonds. Marina has been hotly tipped for stardom this year, coming second in the BBC Sound of 2010 poll. At the tail end of last year, Marina released her first single Mowgli's Road which missed the top 100. However her first full release came in the form of Hollywood which hit #12, followed by #26 peaking I Am Not A Robot and now Oh No which enters at #38 this week. All 4 of these singles are taken from her top 5 album Family Jewels. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs is the new #1 album So we have a new #1 album to topple Eminem, Arcade Fire's third album The Suburbs crashes straight in at #1 to become the band's first #1 album after Neon Bible came within a whisker of #1 in 2007. Arcade Fire are the only new album release to do much this week, Chicane do enter at #35 with their new album Giants. As a result there are lots of long running albums going back up the listings including Michael Buble, Paolo Nutini, Paloma Faith and Rihanna. Newer albums from the likes of Jason Derulo, BoB and The XX are continuing to do well. Personal opinion I really like Neyo's new single Beautiful Monster and think it's one of the best he's ever done along with Closer, good to see something decent at #1 for a change. Flo Rida's Club Can't Handle Me has grown on me lots recently so good to see that climb to #2 this week. Whilst I prefer the Hoosiers' previous singles, I still think Choices is a very good comeback single and hope the new album is as good as the first. Not too keen on DJ Fresh with his Gold dust, doesn't really go anywhere for me. I really love Marina & The Diamonds album and think that Oh No deserves much better than a mere footnote at #38 ... ah well!

007 Chart Commentary
The Wanted get an all time high at number one New 5 piece boy band The Wanted enter straight in at #1 this week with debut single All Time Low, perhaps to the surprise of many. The band were formed last year from a mass auditioning process and have been inspired by the recent success of the likes of JLS. The Wanted have performed alongside the Saturdays and have also collaborated with the likes of Taio Cruz and Cathy Dennis for their forthcoming debut album. They certainly have made a good start with a chart topping single. Travie McCoy feat Bruno Mars – Billionaire enters at #3 So the track that has been tipped by many to be the next urban / R&B chart topper actually goes in at #3 this week, perhaps surprisingly. Travis McCoy first came to light as the lead vocalist of hip hop group Gym Class Heroes who scored 3 top 10 hits between 2006 and 2008, biggest being the Supertramp sampling Cupid’s Chokehold which made #3. Under the name of Travie McCoy, he equals that peak with Billionaire which features vocals from Bruno Mars who also sung on this year’s chart topping Nothin’ On You by BoB. Flo Rida feat David Guetta – Club Can’t Handle Me enters at #5 In a top 10 which contains all of this week’s new entries, Flo Rida comes in at #5 after leading iTunes for the latter half of the week. Club Can’t Handle Me is another track to be released early due to the online presence of a karaoke version, also due to the release of the Step Up 3D soundtrack from which the track is taken. US rapper Flo Rida first came to prominence on these shores when Low became a massive #2 hit in 2007, this was followed by lesser top 30 hits Elevator and In The Ayer. Then he hit #1 last year with Right Round in collaboration with a then unknown Ke$ha, again followed by smaller hits Sugar, Jump and Be On You. Now he returns for another top 5, this time hit alongside David Guetta, again looking likely to be very big indeed. The club can’t handle him, I wonder if the charts can! Swedish House Mafia – One (My Name) enters at #7 Swedish House Mafia is a group of 3 house DJs from Sweden, as you may have guessed from the name. Current members are Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso, with Eric Prydz having been a member but no longer following his move to London. All DJ and record producers, Axwell is perhaps the best known with hits of his own such as Feel The Vibe and I Found U. Between them, they have produced remixes for the likes of Adele, Hard Fi, Usher, Robin S, Faithless and Temper Trap. With additional vocals from Pharrel, One (My Name) enters at #7 as the debut UK release for the trio. Magnetic Man feat Angela Hunte – I Need Air enters at #10 Another of this week’s big new entries to come from a trio of producers / remixers comes from Magnetic Man. The group consists of UK based dubstep producers Skream, Benga and Artwork, who have produced various remixes for the likes of La Roux, Klaxons and Bat For Lashes. Magnetic Man have also featured on NME and are due to play at Glastonbury this year, as well as release their debut album. I Need Air is the trio’s debut single entering at #10 this week, also featuring vocals from Angela Hunte. Jason Derulo – What If climbs to #15 In a chart devoid of action outwith the top 10, Jason Delrulo manages to climb another 4 places with his 4th single What If. This looks likely to miss the top 10, however the track has renewed interest in his self titled album which climbs to #15 this week to achieve its second highest peak since debuting at #8. Eminem holds steady at #1 in the albums chart It is a fifth week at the top for Eminem’s Recovery album which is still continuing to sell very well indeed by fending off some big new entries. Sir Tom Jones came within a whisker of becoming the oldest male artist to achieve a #1 album this week, however Praise & Blame enters at a very respectable #2, his 9th to make the top 5 since his 1965 debut. US rock band Avenged Sevenfold get their biggest hit to date as their fifth studio album hits #5, this is following the sad death of their drummer The Rev. John and Edward Grimes famously made their name in a big way on last year’s X-Factor then scored a #2 hit with Under Pressure and now enter at #17 with their album Planet Jedward … not from planet Earth it seems after all! Personal opinion of 007! I am happy to see The Wanted hit the top as All Time Low is actually quite good, better than JLS’s current offering anyway! It is certainly a billion times better than the generic rubbish that is Billionaire by Travie McCoy (ridiculous name anyway). Flo Rida’s new one is ok I guess even if it does sound like most other Guetta produced tracks we’ve had lately. Both Swedish House Mafia’s and Magnetic Man’s new songs are reasonable I guess, just not my sort of thing in either case but it is refreshing to see something different in the top 10. I am happy to see Jason Derulo make a bit of progress with his best song What If, even if it is likely to miss the top 10. I am soooo happy to see the tuneless Jedward twins flopping in both singles and albums, what a joke they really are.
