007 Chart Commentary
Roll Deep has good times as they enter at #1 London based grime collective Roll Deep can celebrate some good times this week as they enter at the very top with their new single entitled Good Times. The collective were founded in 2002 and released their first album In At The Deep End in 2005, from which they scored 2 UK hits – #11 hit The Avenue and #25 hit Shake A Leg. Vocals on this track come from little known singer Jodie Connor and is in-keeping with the style of music currently popular, hence its #1 debut this week. Glee Cast – Like A Prayer enters at #16 This week’s Glee episode focused on the work of Madonna, with members performing covers of a selection of Madonna songs. Leading the way is the #16 entry Like A Prayer, which was originally a huge selling #1 hit in 1989 for Madge. This is the only one to make top 40, other entries include Like A Virgin, Vogue, 4 Minutes and a Borderline / Open Your Heart mash up. It is perhaps surprising to see this enter below last week's entry, Gives You Hell is a non-mover at #14. N-Dubz – Say It’s Over climbs to #20 In a top 40 packed full of climbers and new entries, N-Dubz make the top 20 with their latest single Say It’s Over, rising 10 places to #20. This is now the group’s 4th top 20 hit as a lead artist with only I Need You making top 10, peaking at #5 last year. Of course Number One made that very chart position last year also, alongside Tinchy Stryder. I don’t think they will say it’s over any time soon! Marina & The Diamonds – I Am Not A Robot enters at #26 Marina Diamondis appeared on the BBC Sound Of 2010 poll as one to watch and promptly released her proper debut single Hollywood, it made #12. The Family Jewels album made top 5 but quickly disappeared until just a few weeks ago, now showing some signs of recovery. I Am Not A Robot was originally released as a buzz single last year and now gets a full release and #26 debut. Lady Antebellum – Need You Now enters at #28 Now for a new entry from a Lady who is not Gaga and is not actually a lady, but a 3 piece Nashville based male country music group. Lady Antebellum were formed in 2006 and have scored several big US country chart hits, now they make their UK debut at #28 with their single Need You Now. Billy Joel – She’s Always A Woman enters at #29 She’s Always A Woman is a song originally recorded by Billy Joel and released as a single alongside a reissue of Just The Way You Are, only peaking at #53 in 1986. However after the use of the song in a John Lewis advert, the song now makes the top 40 for the very first time. It should be noted that the song in the advert is a cover version by Guillemots lead singer Fyfe Dangerfield, itself released as a single next week. Alicia Keys – Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart enters at #31 This week, a broken hearted Alicia Keys scores a third hit single from her massive selling current album Element Of Freedom. This is looking on course to follow in the footsteps of previous singles Doesn’t Mean Anything and Empire State Of Mind which have been big top 10 hits. Alicia’s biggest selling single is of course Empire State Of Mind (a top 5 hit with and without Jay Z), however her highest peaking single is still her debut Falling #3 way back in 2001. Alexandra Burke – All Night Long enters at #34 At the moment there seem to be 2 TV programmes that are producing the most hits – the aforementioned Glee and X-Factor. So now Alexandra Burke scores a 4th hit single from her debut album Overcome. All Night Long looks set to rise in the coming weeks from its entry point of #34, as the forthcoming single version also features rapper Pitbull. The song title is not to be confused with Lionel Richie’s hit of Blazin’ Squad’s one. Train – Hey, Soul Sister enters at #36 US pop rock band Train were first formed back in 1998 and have achieved moderate success in the US over the years. The group are only really known on these shores for their 2001 radio staple Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me) which peaked at #10. After a 3 year hiatus they are now back with a brand new single Hey Soul Sister which enters at #36, another that is destined for bigger things. Jason Derulo – Ridin’ Solo enters at #38 Another future hit entering the top 40 for the very first time is the third single from Jason Derulo who rides into the top 40 at #38. This of course follows his Imogen Heap sampling #3 debut Whatcha Say and chart topping In My Head (which is back up 1 to #23 this week). Adam Lambert – For Your Entertainment enters at #39 American Idol has actually produced a fair number of hits in this country from the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks and Daughtry. Now to add to that list is 2009 runner up Adam Lambert who is doing it all For Your Entertainment. Adam's album is due out next week so we could perhaps expect this to stick around. Plan B returns to the top of the album charts Helped in part by his Jools Holland appearance and the great reviews the album has been getting, Plan B’s Defamation Of Strickland Banks goes back to #1. This is the third album to do that this year with Boyzone’s Brother and Lady Gaga’s The Fame (Monster) being the others. Usher was widely expected to enter at #1 with his sixth studio album Raymond vs Raymond, however he settles for #2 this week. Glee Cast get a third album chart entry with their Madonna covers entitled The Power Of Madonna, this has helped Madonna’s Celebration return to the top 20 this week. Rockers Bullet For My Valentine enter the top 5 with their new album Fever at #5 this week. The rather bizarre group of fishermen turned singers Port Isaac’s Fisherman’s Friends enter at #9 with their self titled album of rather unique sea shanties and covers. Definitely something fishy going on there! Personal opinion I do not like the Roll Deep song, more generic R&B rubbish to my ears. I would much rather have seen Usher back at #1 or even better Diana Vickers to stay there with Once, as that is good electro-pop with Ms Vickers' quirky voice. Glee gives us even more rubbish with their slaughtering of Madonna’s hits, Like A Prayer is cringe worthy to say the least. Lady Antebellum is not brilliant but still OK, however the good new entries are all lower down for this week. I've always thought that Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart is a highlight from Alicia Keys album, a truly beautiful song with a slowly building melody and Alicia's great voice. I think All Night Long is probably Alexandra Burke's best song and most catchy yet, beaten only by the gorgeous Hallelujah. It's good to see Train get another UK hit with the rather good Hey Soul Sister, Ridin' Solo is good as well but not quite as good as In Your Head from Jason Derulo. I haven't actually heard Adam Lambert's For Your Entertainment, but judging by what I've heard it is probably quite good in a poppy sort of way.

007 Chart Commentary
Diana Vickers enters at #1 with Once Diana Vickers first appeared in 2008’s X Factor which was ultimately won by a certain Alexandra Burke. Ms Vickers has however taken a bit longer to work on her music, starring in the West End play Rise& Fall of Little Voice in the interim time. This seems to have paid off as Once debuts at the very top this week, incidentally the B side Sunlight comes from the aforementioned show. Not opting for the ballad or cheesy pop route, Once is a guitar driven electro rock song complete with her unique vocal style. The question is though, will this be at the top of the chart more than once? Chipmunk feat Esmee Denters – Until You Were Gone enters at #3 UK rapper Jahmaal Noel Fyffe scores his fifth UK top 40 hit this week as new single Until You Were Gone becomes this week’s second highest new entry. The number one for this week was widely expected to be a 2 way battle between Diana Vickers and Chipmunk, however the latter was beaten by Usher and lands at a still respectable #3. Mr Munk’s debut single was the #21 Chip Diddy Chip, he then hit #6 with Diamond Rings (featuring Emeli Sande), #1 with Oopsy Daisy (featuring Dayo Olatunji) and most recently #7 with Look For Me (featuring Talay Riley). These singles were featured on his debut album I Am Chipmunk, Until You Were Gone however is to be included in the forthcoming platinum edition. Tina Turner – The Best reenters at #9 And now for another Facebook campaign, this time it was by Rangers football supporters to get Tina Turner’s (Simply) The Best to #1. This is timed to coincide with their SPL league win and due to the fact that Tina has never had a UK #1 single before. The song has in fact entered the top 10 at #9 so it is partially successful, having originally peaked at #5 in 1989 and being used for various sporting occasions and people over the years. Tina Turner was last seen in the UK charts in 2004 when Open Arms peaked at #25, her biggest solo hits came with 1984’s What’s Love Got To Do With It and 1985’s We Don’t Need Another Hero getting to #3. Another campaign was launched by rivals Celtic for You’ll Never Walk Alone by Gerry & The Pacemakers which is back at a somewhat lower #33. Glee Cast – Gives You Hell enters at #14, Hello also enters at #35 For the last 2 weeks, we have not seen any Glee Cast entries into the chart due to the TV programme taking a short break. This week though, it is back and the latest episode features songs with Hell or Hello in their title. The highest of these is Gives You Hell which was originally a #18 hit for All American Rejects and that peak is actually beaten by the Glee cover. Glee Cast also chart at #35 with their cover of Lionel Richie’s #1 hit Hello, is it me you are looking for … er no I don’t think so! 3 Oh 3 – Don’t Trust Me reenters at #22 Hip hop / pop group 3 Oh 3 get another of this week’s 4 re-entries following the re-release of their debut single Don’t Trust Me. Widely seen as the band’s big breakthrough hit, but despite hitting the top 10 is Australia, New Zealand, Finland and USA, it could only make #21 here last year. Instead it was Starstrukk (with Katy Perry) which became a massive #3 hit and is still inside the top 40 after 19 weeks, 3 Oh 3 also featured on Ke$ha’s #11 hit Blah Blah Blah. After re-release this week, Don’t Trust Me can still only peak a place below the original peak … well don’t trust a re-release either! This week’s also rans Amongst the singles this week to miss out are Meat Loaf, Alexandra Burke, Marina & The Diamonds and Jason Derulo. The latter 3 tracks are due to be released shortly so may well climb into the top 40 within the next week or so. AC/DC beat the modfather to #1 in the album chart Rockers AC/DC pull off another surprise #1 album as their soundtrack to the forthcoming Iron Man 2 ilm hits #1. This is essentially a greatest hits album with other tracks added on, their last studio album also hit #1 in 2008, beating Kaiser Chiefs. So the modfather almost does it again, however Paul Weller hits #2 with his tenth studio album entitled Wake Up The Nation. Meat Loaf makes a return this week with the bizarrely titled Hang Cool Teddy Bear which enters at #4 in a top 5 with 3 new entries. Kate Nash makes a strong debut at #8 with her second album My Best Friend Is You, after her debut hit #1. Selena Gomez & The Scene hit top 20 as do 1990’s Indie band James. Personal opinion I am very happy to see Diana Vickers at #1 and really like her style, her voice could grate and may not be to everyone’s taste … I like it though. Usher’s OMG is growing on me too so I wouldn’t have minded it staying at #1. Until You Were Gone is probably the best Chipmunk song, due to Esmee Denters singing on it, however I still don’t like it at all. Really good to see Simply The Best back in the top 10, what a great anthem! Glee however are back and dishing out even worse covers than usual if that’s possible, even 3 Oh 3’s Don’t Trust Me Is Better and I don’t like it either. I’m a massive Paul Weller fan and am not happy to see his album beaten by AC/DC … ah well hopefully better next week!

007 Chart Commentary
Usher feat Will I Am – OMG climbs to number 1 In a much busier chart than last week we have an influx of new entries and a new #1 in the process. After climbing to #2 last week, US superstar Usher Raymond IV climbs another place to reach number one. OMG is Usher’s fourth UK chart topper in total and first since 2004’s Burn, You Make Me Wanna and Yeah were the other 2. This means that Scouting For Girls fall to #2 after a fortnight at the top, this year we have yet to see a #1 last longer than 2 weeks there. Oh My Gosh! Professor Green feat Ed Drewett – I Need You Tonight enters at #3 UK rapper Stephen Paul Manderson makes his debut this week under the name of Professor Green with I Need You Tonight. The track heavily samples Need You Tonight by INXS, a 1987 #2 hit for the Australian rock band. The track features vocals by Ed Drewett and is this week’s highest new entry in at #3 following lots of airplay and exposure over the last month or so. Kelis – Acapella enters at #5 US R&B singer songwriter Kelis Jones made her UK chart debut in 1999 with her #4 debut Caught Out There. She is perhaps best known though for her massive #2 hit Milkshake which came in 2003, followed up with Trick Me (#2) and Millionaire (#3) in 2004. Kelis didn’t manage another top 5 hit until 2007’s Lil Star made #3, after which she took a break to sort out marital problems and to have a baby. Now she returns to the top 5 with acclaimed new single Acapella which is from her forthcoming fifth album. Selena Gomez & The Scene – Naturally enters at #7 Making her natural debut inside the top 10 this week is Disney star Selena Gomez with her backing band called The Scene. Selena Gomez is an 18 year old s actress turned singer, probably best known for her roles in various Disney films and TV shows. Selena is now keen to be recognized as a serious recording artist along with her band and not merely as “another Disney singer”. Now she manages what Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato haven’t which is to get a top 10 hit with uptemo electro-pop song Naturally. Joshua Radin – I’d Rather Be With You stays at #11 American singer songwriter Joshua Radin debuted last week at #11 and stays there this week with his very first UK single I’d Rather Be With You. The style of this track can be compared with the likes of Jack Johnson and Jason Mraz, strangely enough this track has peaked at #11 as did I’m Yours by Jason Mraz. I'm sure he'd rather be with a top 10 hit! Taio Cruz feat Ke$ha – Dirty Picture climbs to #12 UK R&B singer Taio Cruz first made his debut in 2006 with #29 hit I Just Wanna Know, however he did not hit it big until 2008 when Come On Girl made #5 with 2 further top 20 hits I Can Be and She’s Like A Star to follow. Last year he hit #1 with Break Your Heart but for whatever reason, the followup No Other One only made #42. This week his Dirty Picture rises from #40 to #12, which also gives Ke$ha a third top 20 hit and himself a fifth in total. Kate Nash – Do Wah Doo enters at #15 London based singer songwriter Kate Nash first found fame with her #2 hit and signature song Foundations in 2007, followed by 3 more minor hits Mothwash, Pumpkin Soup and Merry Happy. However it is only now that she manages another top 20 hit with Do Wah Doo, the first single to be taken from her forthcoming second album. This single was released early last week but was actually removed and reappeared properly this week, the same seems to have happened to Christina Aguilera’s comeback single also. Eliza Doolittle – Skinny Genes enters at #22 Relatively unknown UK singer songwriter Eliza Doolittle makes her debut this week at #22 with the track Skinny Genes. The song uses a sample from the Andy Williams song Butterfly, and the style can be compared to the likes of Lily Allen and Marina. Doolittle’s father is a stage director/writer and her mother is musical theatre actress. Not to be confused with the character of the same name from the play Pygmalion or Dr Doolittle who talks to the animals! Florence & The Machine – Dog Days Are Over stays top 30 This week saw the first full release of Dog Days Are Over by Florence & The Machine, last week saw it reach top 30 again but this week it goes 24-25. The track was first released as a buzz track prior to the release of her album Lungs, then reached the top 40 following a Jools Holland appearance at the beginning of the year, peaking at #23 which she almost matched. Paul Weller – No Tears To Cry / Wake Up The Nation enters at #26 Now for the return of the mod father to the top 40 with new double A side No Tears To Cry coupled with the title track to his forthcoming tenth studio album Wake Up The Nation. As with the singles from his last album, this is released as a double A side featuring a slower song and a faster tempo number. Paul Weller's first solo release was Into Tomorrow, released under the banner of The Paul Weller Movement. Despite a modest chart performance, the follow-up Uh Huh, Oh Yeh made top 20, a feat Weller last achieved with 2008’s Have You Made Up Your Mind / Echoes Round The Sun. This is his 31st solo top 40 hit, not including 18 with The Jam and 15 with Style Council … so he hasn’t done much then! Paramore – The Only Exception climbs to #31 Pop/punk band Paramore got themselves a third top 40 hit last week with The Only Exception as it entered at #33, this week the track rises another 2 places to #31. The title of this track is a fair description of its style, as it is indeed the only exception being a ballad of a somewhat slower tempo than their previous output has been. Futureheads – Heartbeat Song enters at #34 UK based indie group Futureheads make their chart comeback this week with acclaimed new single Heartbeat Song. This is now the band’s seventh top 40 hit in total since their 2003 debut, to date their only top 10 hit is still their cover of Kate Bush’s Hounds Of Love #8 in 2005. Snow Patrol feat Martha Wainwright – Set The Fire To The Third Bar re-enters at #36 So last week we had re-entries for the Saturdays and Florence, this week it is the turn of Snow Patrol who return to the top 40 with Set The Fire to the Third Bar. This is following the track's use in an advert for Dear John, it made #18 when first released in 2006 as a direct follow up to their massively long running hit Chasing Cars. Jay Z feat Swizz Beats – Onto The Next One enters a #38 US superstar rapper Jay Z returns to the top 40 with the fourth single to be lifted from his current Blueprint III album. This one is another collaboration like most of his other tracks, this time with DJ / producer / rapper Swizz Beats who was last seen alongside Chris Brown on I can Transform Ya last year. Chart misses this week and last week 1980’s girl group sensation Bananarama miss the top 40 again with their new single Love Don’t Live Here. Same for Norwegan pop singer Maria Mena, Ash (again) and Welsh opera star Katherine Jenkins. Whilst Darwin Deez, Hadouken and Doves were amongst last week’s unfortunate flop releases to miss the top 40. Plan B tops the album charts Rapper turned singer Plan B enters straight in at #1 with second album The Defamation of Strickland Banks, off the back of #9 hit Stay Too Long and current top 5 hit She Said. In an all new top 2, Scouting For Girls come in at #2 with their second album entitled Everybody Wants To Be On TV following up their #1 debut. Electro group MGMT debut at #4 with Congratulations, also their second album … I spot a theme here! Another second album enters in the top 10, Simple Times from US singer songwriter Joshua Radin. Personal opinion I am happy to see Usher make #1 with his track OMG which I guess is quite catchy, more especially because it has stopped the sacrilege that is Professor Green’s I Need You Tonight … what a rubbish rap song (add a ‘c’ in there)! I really like Acapella from Kelis, I love how almost every song she’s done has been that bit different and far from predictable. I rather like the Selena Gomez song, much more than I thought I would from a Disney child actress. I quite like Kate Nash’s new one even if it does have a daft title, not as good as Foundations on saying that. I don't particularly like Taio/Kesha's Dirty Picture and hate N-Dubz new one Say It's Over ... I wish they would! On the other hand, I always have been and still am a big Paul Weller fan and really like both his new songs, not his best but still very good indeed IMO. Futureheads new one is ok, however Jay Z’s one is predictably terrible … please don't go on to the next one!
