007 Chart Commentary - 23rd Jun 2013
Oops, I just read "number one single in 1973" on wiki but now realise it meant US #1. I see it only got to 6 in the UK but The Fugees version hit #1, I prefer The Fugees version anyway.

007 Chart Commentary - 23rd Jun 2013
Robin Thicke feat Pharrel & TI - Blurred Lines stays at #1 The still massive Blurred Lines spends a 4th week at the top of the official UK charts this week for Robin Thicke and Pharrel. The track sold over 180k during its first 3 weeks on release, a feat which is very rare excepting in December. This week the track has become the 2nd this year to sell over 100k for 4 weeks running, the other being Daft Punk's Get Lucky, also featuring Pharrel. Next week there is huge competition from 2 held back releases from The Wanted and Icona Pop, I would also expect the already massive tracks from Daft Punk, Passenger and Naughty Boy to also be selling consistently. Jason Derulo - The Other Side enters at #2 So the track that came closest to overthrowing Robin Thicke and thus this week's highest new entry is The Other Side from Jason Derulo. The 23 year old US singer songwriter debuted over here in 2009 with #3 hit Whatcha Say, sampling the Imogen Heap track Hide & Seek. He hit #1 for the first time with his second single In My Head, and #2 with next single Ridin' Solo. He then hit #12 with What If but missed top 40 with Sky's The Limit. All were from his self titled debut album, in 2011 2nd album Future History got him his 2nd #1 single Don't Wanna Go Home. Like Jason's first #1, that too featured a sample, this time it was Robin S Show Me Love mixed with Harry Balafonte's Day-O (The Banana Boat Song). #4 hit single It Girl followed, as did #25 Breathing and #15 Fight For You, with the latter sampling Toto's Africa. Now as the lead single to his firthcoming 3rd album, The Other Side debuts at #2 for Mr Derulo. Dizzee Rascal feat Robbie Williams - Goin' Crazy enters at #5 Ghanan / British rapper Dizzee Rascal gets himself yet another top 5 hit this week as Goin' Crazy comes in at #5 featuring a certain Robbie Williams. Dizzee was first seen in the UK top 40 10 years ago with his debut I Luv U and a further 9 singles followed from 3 albums with none peaking higher than #10, Stand Up Tall peaked there. His big commercial breakthrough came in 2008 with the massive #1 Dance Wiv Me, followed by 2 further massive #1s Bonkers and Holiday. #10 hit Dirtee Cash followed, as did You Got The Dirtee Love alongside Florence & The Machine. In 2010 he scored 2 more #1s - Dirtee Disco and England football anthem Shout. He was last in the charts last year with #22 hit Scream and alongside DJ Fresh on their #6 hit The Power. As well as featuring on Jessie J's current top 10 hit Wild, he enters at #5 with Goin' Crazy. The track features Robbie Williams who has previosly had 30 top 10 singles (33 including 3 charity #1s), since initially leaving Take That. Tom Odell - Another Love enters at #10 UK singer songwriter Tom Odell gets his very first top 40 his this week as Another Love comes in at #10. The 22 year old singer won the Brits' Choice Award this year and had released his debut EP Songs From Another Love at the end of last year. The original EP featured this track and spent 6 weeks in the top 100, so technically Another Love is a re-entry at #10. He released his first single proper Hold Me earlier this year but only peaked at #44. His debut album Long Way Down is released tomorrow and fetures the aforementioned tracks as well as Can't Pretend. Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know? enters at #11 Sheffield band Arctic Monkeys get their biggest hit in 6 years this week as Do I Wanna Know debuts at #11, after an out of the blue midweek release. The band first exploded onto the scene in 2005 with #1 I Bet You Lood Good On The Dancefloor and the UK's fastest selling debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not. A second #1 hit When The Sun Goes Down followed, then standalone single Leave Before The Lights Come On made #4. The band's second album Favourite Worst Nightmare spawned #2 hit Brianstorm, #5 Florescent Adolescent and #20 Teddy Picker. In 2009, album #3 Humbug gave them a #12 hit Crying Lightning and a few other non charting singles. 4th consecutive #1 album Suck It & See got them #28 single Don't Sit Down Cos I've Moved Your Chair and 3 other non charters. Last year, the band had 2 standalone singles - #23 R U Mine? and #21 cover of the Beatles' Come Together. Now they hit #11 with Do I Wanna Know?, the lead single of their forthcoming 5th album. London Grammar - Wasting My Young Years enters at #31 New London based trio London Grammar conist of Hannah Reid, Dot Major and Dan Rothman who formed the band while at Nottingham University together. After several festival appearences and low key EP releases, the trio get their first chart hit with Wasting My Young Years in at #31. The band's sound has been compared favourably to the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Florence & The Machine and The XX. They also have a debut album which is due out shortly. Leah McFall - Killing Me Softly enters at #36 22 year old Northern Irish singer songwriter gets her 2nd top 40 hit in just 3 weeks as her cover of Killing Me Softly debuts at #36 this week. Leah has been a contestant on the 2nd series of The Voice UK but was subsequently beaten by Andrea Begley in the weekend's final. As there are studio version of the semi-finalists' performances made available, Leah was the first (and thus far only) conestant to chart this year as her cover of Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive peaked at #8 last week. Now her cover of Killing Me Softly comes in at #36, first became a #1 hit for Roberta Flack in 1973 and has since been covered by numerous artists including Luther Vandross, Johnny Mathis, Carly Simon, Susan Boyle, Tori Amos and The Fugees. It is the latter hip hop version on which Leah's cover is based. Leah's cover of Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You is likely to enter the chart next week as well. Kanye West claims the #1 album with Yeezus US rapper Kanye West gets his 2nd UK chart topper this week as new album Yeezus goes straight in at #1, following 2007's Graduation to the top. This replaces metal band Black Sabbath whose 13 album drops a place to #2, ahead of the mid week #1. Kodaline see their debut album In A Perfect World debut at #3, containing recent hit singles High Hopes and Love Like This, as well as All I Want. US hip hop recording artist J Cole enters at #7 with his 2nd album Born Sinner, an improvement on his #25 debut 2 years ago. Icelandic alternative group Sigur Ros get their 3rd consecutive top 10 album with their 7th studio release Kveikur, coming in at #9. Other new entries this week include Hanz Zimmer with Man Of Steel OST and New Zealand supranon singer Hayley Westnra. Opinion I am happy to see Robin thicke stay at #1 for a 4th week as Blurred Lines has grown on me lots, after not really liking the song at first. I quite like Jason Derulo's new one The Other Side, not quite as good as In My Head or Ridin' Solo though. That Dizzee Rascal dirge is awful as expected, the presence of Robbie Williams doesn't help it much either ... I'd be going zrazy if I liked anything with Dizzee on it! Tom Odell's Another Love on the other is great to see in the top 10, really good song ... just hope his album turns out to be good. I am a big fan of the Arctic Monkeys and whilst Do I Wanna Know may not be their best song, it is still really good. I quite like that London Grammar track in a Florence/Fleetwood kind of way. Leah McFall's voice is unique and she can sing very well, however I still think that Andrea was the worthy winner of The Voice ... we'll see what careers they can make.

007 Chart Commentary - 2nd June 2013
Robin Thicke feat TI & Pharrell - Blurred Lines enters at #1 We have another new #1 with huge sales this week as widely predicted, Robin Thicke debuts in poll position with Blurred Lines. This marks the sixth week running that the #1 single sales have been over 100k, unusually high for this time of year. US singer songwriter Robin Thicke released his first single When I Get You Alone in 2003 and made top 10 in Netherlands and New Zealand but did not chart in the UK or US. However in 2007 Lost Without U was his first international hit, making #11. He had several international hits but nothing that charted here in the UK, until now. Blurred Lines features US singer and producer Pharrell Williams, who is also featured on Daft Punk's Get Lucky. So Pharrell is now featured on 2 huge #1s which also make up 2 of this week’s top 3. This replaces Naughty Boy's La La La La which slips to #2, the aforementioned Get Lucky by Daft Punk slips to #3. Jessie J feat Dizzee Rascal & Big Sean - Wild enters at #5 This week sees the return of 25 year old singer, songwriter and talent show judge Jessica Ellen Cornish, as new single Wild enters at #5 for Jessie J. Jessie first came to prominence in late 2010 with debut single Do It Like A Dude, which went on to make #2 after her appearance in the BBC Sound of 2011. In 2011, Jessie scored a huge #1 with Price Tag which was followed by the release of her huge selling debut album Who You Are. Her third single was the #9 peaking Nobody's Perfect, followed by #16 hit Who's Laughing Now. She then hit #8 with the title track to her album, and scored her second #1 with Domino. She was last in the charts last year with the David Guetta featuring Laser Light, which also hit #5. Currently appearing as a judge on The Voice UK, Jessie J makes her return with new single Wild. The track features 2 rappers Dizzee Rascal and Big Sean, this is the latter's first appearance in the top 10 and the former's 11th. Jennifer Lopez feat Pitbull - Live It Up enters at #17 43 year old US singer, actress and superstar Jennifer Lopez gets another top 20 hit this week as Live It Up debuts at #17. JLo first came on the scene in 1999 with #4 hit If You Had My Love, followed by #5 hit Waiting For tonight. Love Don't Cost A Thing provided her with her first UK #1 in 2001, from her second album J.Lo. This was followed by the #3 hits Play and Ain't It Funny, then the #4 hits I'm Real and Ain't It Funny (remix). A further 8 top 11 hits came from 2002-2007, including second #1 Get Right. She had no hits until 2011 when she scored her biggest seller and third #1 On The Floor, featuring rapper Pitbull. #9 I'm Into You and #11 Dance Again (also featuring Pitbull) then followed. Now she returns at #17 with Live It Up, teaming up with Pitbull once more for her 20th top 20 hit. She was also featured on Will I Am's #3 hit THE last year, alongside Mick Jagger. Stylo G - Soundbwoy enters at #18 28 year old Jamacan born singer Jason McDermott gets his debut UK chart hit this week under the name of Stylo G. Stylo was born in Jamaica and moved to the UK at the age of 15, and has since built an underground following. He has been releasing music since 2004 and has worked with artists such as Giggs, Chipmunk, Sneakbo, Gyptian. Now he gets his first mainstream hit with Soundbwoy, which debuts this week at #18. Of Monsters & Men - Little Talks and Daniel Merriweather - Red reenter After being performed on The Voice UK as part of the battle rounds, there are 2 re-entries in this week's chart. The highest is Icelandic group Of Monsters & Men, who made #12 last year with Little Talks and is back just a place lower at #13. Australian singer Daniel Marriweather scored 2 top 10 hits in 2009, by far the biggest was Red which made #5 and is back this week at #29. We can expect further re-entries due to performances on The Voice and/or Britain’s Got Talent in the coming weeks. Bruno Mars - Treasure enters at #35 27 year old US singer songwriter Bruno Mars gets another UK top 40 hit this week as Treasure debuts at #35. Bruno first came on the scene as a solo artist in 2010 with debut Just The Way You Are, which went on to sell over a million in the UK. This was the first of 3 #1s with Grenade and The Lazy Song being the other 2. 3 further top 20 hits followed - Marry You, Runaway Baby and It Will Rain. These were all from his huge selling debut album Doo Wops & Hooligans. Last year he hit #2 with Locked Out Of Heaven, the lead single form his second album Unorthodox Jukebox which has also sold very well. His last single When I Was Your Man also made #2 and is still in this week’s top 30. Now Treasure debuts at #35, with the possibility of climbing further in the coming weeks. Daft Punk retain the #1 album After becoming the year's fastest seller, Random Access Memories by Daft Punk stays at #1 this week. Folk singer Laura Marling debuts at #3 with her 4th and highest peaking album Once I Was An Eagle. UK girl group Stooshe's much delayed debut album London With The Lights On comes in at #8, featuring the recent hits Love Me, Black Heart and Slip (but not Waterfalls). Other new entries come from Black Star Riders and Alice In Chains. There are re-entries and climbers from the likes of Bruno Mars, Ellie Goulding, Jake Bugg and Olly Murs due to recent live performances at Radio 1’s Big Weekend and Britain's Got Talent. Opinion I am happy to see Blurred Lines debut at #1 as it is a very good song, again a little bit unusual in style. I'm not a fan of Jessie J's new one, even without the pointless features of both Dizzee Rascal and Big Sean. Stylo G's monstrosity is just as bad for me if not worse, and JLo's generic rubbish is not much better. Bruno Mars though is good as ever, Treasure is one of the many highlights of his current album, for me. Great to see Red and Little Talks back in the charts too. Also great to see Rod Stewart's really brilliant Time album hanging around.

007 Chart Commentary - 26th May 2013
Naughty Boy feat Sam Smith - La La La La debuts at the top After 4 weeks at #1 for Daft Punk's Get Lucky, we have a brand new #1 in the form of La La La La by Naughty Boy and Sam Smith. 28 year old music producer Shahid Khan is best known with his work producing Emeli Sande's debut album Our Version Of Events, which has just ended a 66 week consecutive run in the top 10. Naughty Boy has produced 3 previous top 10 hits featuring Ms Sande - Chipmunk's #6 Diamond Rings, Wiley's #9 Never Be Your Woman and his own #10 Wonder. He has also worked with the likes of Leona Lewis, JLS, Cheryl Cole, Jennifer Hudson, Alesha Dixon and Tinie Tempah. Now he scores his first #1, alongside singer Sam Smith who was featured on Disclosure's massive hit Latch earlier this year. Naughty Boy has an album due out shortly, entitled Hotel Cabana. Daft Punk and Passenger each slip a place in the top 3, whilst Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Rudimental both stay at #4 and #5 respectively. 2 Chainz feat Wiz Khalifa - We Own It enters at #6 35 year old US rapper Tauheed Epps gets his first UK top 40 hit as the lead credit of 2 Chainz. He has had several big hits in the US including No Lie (feat Drake), Birthday Song (feat Kanye West) and I'm Different, his only top 100 hits here in the UK are on Kanye West's #55 track Mercy and A$AP Rocky's #50 F**kin' Problems. Taken from the soundtrack to Fast & Furious 6, We Own It gets him to #6. The Track features fellow US rapper Wiz Kalifah, who had a #5 hit with Black & Yellow and featured on big hits from Tinie Tempah, T Pain and Maroon 5. Olly Murs - Dear Darlin' climbs to #9 Olly Murs entered at #18 last week with his current single Dear Darlin', that now rises to #9 to give him his first post album top 10 hit. His previous post album singles have been #20 hit Heart On My Sleeve (following #1 debut Please Don't Let Me Go and #4 Thinking Of Me), #13 Oh My Goodness (following 2 huge #1s Heart Skips A Beat and Dance With Me Tonight) and #12 Army Of Two (following #1 Troublemaker). With the release of a remixes EP and various TV performances, the track can be expected to climb further in the next few weeks. Emmelie de Forest - Only Teardrops enters at #15 Every year the Eurovision song conest is held in May, and this has often seen the winning track become a sizeable hit in the UK. That was seen last year when Sweden's winning song Euphoria by Loreen hit #3 and stuck around for a few weeks afterwards. However the same can not be said for our own entries, with Engelbert Humperdinck's track missing the top 40 last year and Bonnie Tyler's Believe In Me stumbling in at #93 last week. However this year's winner comes from 20 year old Danish singer songwriter Emmelie de Forest with her debut single Only Teardrops, entering at #15. Lana Del Rey - Young & Beautiful enters at #23 The other of this week's new arrivals to come from a film soundtrack this week is Young & Beautiful by Lana Del Rey. 26 year old US singer Elizabeth Woolridge Grant first came on the scene here with debut single Video Games, which made #9 in 2011. Then Born To Die also made #9, as the title track to her huge selling #1 album. Several other minor hits followed, the only singles to go top 40 were Blue Jeans and Ride which both made #32. Now Young & Beautiful debuts at #23, taken from the Great Gatsby soundtrack. The 1975 - The City enters at #30 Manchester based 4 piece alternative rock band The 1975 get a second top 40 hit this week as The City debuts at #30. The band have previously performed and recorded under several different names including Talkhouse, The Slowdown, Bigsleep and Drive Like I Do, but have now settled with The 1975. They debuted with #19 peaking single Chocolate which stayed in the top 40 for 10 weeks and only dropped out 2 weeks ago. This is the band's 4th single, and is featured as part of an accompanying EP as the previous 3 have been. Daft Punk have the #1 album with Random Access Memories As widely predicted, French robots Daft Punk get the biggest weekly sale of the year with their Random Access Memories, featuring likely future million selling #1 hit Get Lucky. They replace Rod Stewart who slips to #2 with Time, his first #1 album in over 30 years. US indie band The National enter at #3 with their 6th studio album Trouble Will Find Me and also score their highest placing yet, beating the #5 peak of last album High Violet. Scottish pop rock band Texas make their return at #4 with their 8th studio album The Conversation, their 5th top 5 album. US rock band 30 Seconds To Mars get a new entry at #5 with their 4th album and by far highest peaking entitled Love, Lust, Faith & Dreams. Other new entries come from Demi Lovato, Jamie Cullum, Beth Hart & Joe Bomamassa and the Tribes. Opinon I am happy to see Naughty Boy get to #1 with La La La La as I rather like the song after not liking it much at first, however I'd have liked to see Daft Punk get a 5th straight week at #1 and also do the double. At least that horrible 2 Chainz track didn't get a top 5 placing, still over 100 places higher than I think it deserves! On the other hand, I do think that Dear Darlin' deserves its top 10 placing as it is a bit different for Olly Murs and really good. I quite like Only Teardrops by Emmelie De Forrest, not as good as last year's Euphoria though. Great to see the brilliant Lana Del Rey get another hit single with Young & Beautiful (perfect description of Lana herself), hopefully it keeps climbing. I quite like The 1975's 2 singles so far, the City is rather good but not quite on par with Chocolate for me. Good to see Beyonce, Evanescence and The Script back near (or in) the top 40 this week, especially the latter.

007 Chart Commentary - 19th May 2013
Daft Punk really get lucky with a 4th week at #1 There is just no shifting the French dance duo Daft Punk from #1 as their huge smash hit Get Lucky remains at #1. The track has now sold over 100k copies for all of those 4 weeks, the last track to stay at #1 for 4 weeks was Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen (selling just under 100k in week #4). Daft Punk’s new album is due for release this week so a 5th week is extremely likely. This track features Pharrell Williams, as does forthcoming release Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke. That track is looking likely to go to #1 when released, meaning Pharrell may well replace himself at #1. Some distance behind but still on the rise is Passenger’s Let Her Go, climbing to #2 this week. Demi Lovato - Heart Attack enters at #3 This week’s highest new entry in at #3 comes from 20 year old US singer and actress Demi Lovato. In 2008, Demi first came to prominence as an actress / cast member of Camp Rock. From the soundtrack came her first hit single This Is Me, which made the US top 10 but only #33 in the UK. In the following years, Demi managed another 2 minor UK top 40 hits – La La Land (#35) and Skyscraper (#32). Now she scores her first major hit single with Heart Attack as it debuts at #3, taken from her forthcoming album entitled Demi. Wretch 32 feat Shakka – Blackout enters at #6 28 year old London rapper Jermaine Scott Sinclair blacks out with the excitement of getting another top 10 hit as Wretch 32. After a few underground grime hits and remixes, Wretch first broke through when he was in the BBC Sound Of 2011. If was in 2011 that he released his debut mainstream single Traktor which made #5. This was followed by a #2 single Unorthodox, alongside fellow UK rapper Example, which sampled Fools Gold by the Stone Roses. Then also in 2011 came Wretch’s first #1 Don’t Go, featuring vocalist Josh Kumra. 2 further minor hits followed – Forgiveness and Hush Little Baby (featuring Ed Sheeran). Now Blackout enters at #6, as the lead single from his upcoming third album and 4th top 10 hit. Sub Focus feat Alex Clare – Endorphins enters at #10 UK record producer Nick Douwma has been making music since 2003 under the name of Sub Focus, and this week gets his first UK top 10 hit. He didn’t get his first UK top 40 hit until 2009 when Rock It / Follow The Light made #38. This was followed by 2 #41 singles Could This Be Real (yes it could be) and Splash (which didn’t). Then last year Out Of The Blue got him to #23, featuring vocals from London singer songwriter Alice Gold. Then he made #12 with Tidal Wave, which features London duo Alpines. Now he hits #10 with Endorphins alongside Alex Clare, who scored a huge #4 hit in 2011 with Too Close. Stooshe – Slip enters at #12 UK girl group Stooshe get a fourth hit single as they slip in at #12 this week with their new single. The girls first came on the scene last year with top 5 debut Love Me, which was quick to drop out. However #3 hit Black Heart had rather more staying power and proved to be a big seller for the girls. That was followed up with a rather poorly received cover of TLC’s Waterfalls, which only limped in at #21. This week they enter at #11 with Slip, taken from their much delayed forthcoming debut album. Olly Murs – Dear Darlin' enters at #18 UK singer Oliver Stanley Murs first came to our attention when he came second in 2010’s X-Factor competition. The following year, he hit #1 with debut single Please Don’t Let Me Go and #4 with Thinking Of Me. 2 minor hits followed from his debut self titled album. Then came his 2 huge #1s Heart Skips A Beat and Dance With Me Tonight, followed by #13 Oh My Goodness. Last year, he released his third album and scored another huge #1 single with Troublemaker. The #12 peaking Army Of Two was his last singles chart appearance, peaking just 9 weeks ago. Dear Darlin’ now becomes Olly’s 9th top 20 hit out of 10 releases to date. Not bad for a runner up! Mariah Carey feat Miguel - #Beautiful climbs to #27 US superstar singer songwriter Mariah Carey gets another top 30 hit in the UK this week, as Beautiful climbs to #27. The 43 year old superstar debuted back in 1990 with the first of her 24 UK top 10 hits, Vision Of Love. These hits include 2 #1s Without You and Against All Odds (with Westlife), as well as the likes of I’ll Be There, Dreamlover, Hero, Fantasy, Always Be My Baby, Through The Rain and We Belong Together. Last seen in the top 40 in 2009 with her #19 cover of I Want To Know What Love Is, she is back with #Beautiful. This heavily features US songwriter and producer Miguel who has his very first UK top 40 hit with this. Rod Stewart tops the album chart Leading a group of 4 major new entries in this week’s album chart is 68 year Rod Stewart with Time. He becomes the oldest singer to get a #1 album with original material, his first original album since 1998 and first #1 album since 1979. Behind Rod at #1 is the debut album from Gabrielle Aplin entitled English Rain, featuring #1 hit The Power Of Love, Please Don’t Say You Love Me and Panic Cord. Alternative indie band Vampire Weekend come in at #3 with their 3rd album entitled Modern Vampires Of The City. ABBA of course famously won the Eurovision song contest with Waterloo, now Agnetha Falskogg gets her first solo top 10 album entitled A, in at #6. Scots rockers Primal Scream make their comeback this week as their new album More Light enters at #12. Well I wonder who will have next week's #1 album ... Daft Punk or Daft Punk! Opinion I am very happy to see Daft Punk get another week at #1 and actually have some staying power at the top rather than the usual 1 or 2 weekers. I love Get Lucky, whilst not being a fan of Daft Punk's previous work. I'm not that keen on Demi Lovato's new song nor Wretch 32's, however both are far better than their respective previous output (that's not saying much). Endorphins is not bad really, just quite average to my ears like most of the work of Sub Focus. Stooshe's Slip is not nearly as good as Black Heart but far better than that awful TLC cover and the equally awful Love Me. Olly Murs new song on the other hand is brilliant and easily one of his best, not quite on par with Army Of Two and Troublemaker though, I do like most of his 3 albums so far. Tich's Dumb is just that and Birdy's dull version of People Help The People can just fly away and make way for the great Cherry Ghost original. Good to see Rod get another #1 album, Caro Emerald's and Gabrielle Aplin's albums are great, however Agnetha's is absolutely brilliant and should have been #1.

Daft Punk - Get Lucky climbs to #1 French dance/electronic duo Daft Punk get their very first UK number one single this week as Get Lucky rises to #1, from #3 where it entered last week after only 2 days of sales. The duo's previous biggest hit was 2000's One More Time, which hit #2 behind Can't Fight The Moonlight by Leanne Rimes. Get Lucky features US record producer Pharrell Williams and former Chic singer Nile Rodgers. The track has the highest weekly sales for a #1 single this year so far of 155k, beating the Saturdays previous record. This means that last week's chart topper from Rudimental drops to #2 and Will I Am / Justin Bieber drop to #3. Calvin Harris feat Ellie Goulding - I Need Your Love climbs to #4 Dumfries born singer songwriter and producer Calvin Harris gets an 8th top 5 hit from his current album 18 Months, as I Need Your Love rises to #4. This sets the record for the most consecutive top 5 hits from a studio album. Bounce (feat Kelis), Feel So Close, Let's Go (feat Neyo) and We'll Be Coming Back (feat Example) peaked at #2, Sweet Nothing (feat Florence) was #1 and Drinking From The Bottle (feat Tinie Tempah) made #5. Calvin is also featured on Rihanna's million selling #1 We Found Love which is also included on the album. I Need Your Love is also a joint 2nd biggest hit for Ellie Goulding, along with her chart debut Starry Eyed. Ellie's biggest hit thus remains her huge #2 cover of Elton John's Your Song, having featured in a John Lewis advert. Loveable Rogues – What A Night enters at #9 English hip hop trio Loveable Rouges make their debut this week at #xx with What A Night. The group were first formed last year and reached the final of Britain’s Got Talent. The boys have also supported Olly Murs on his recent tour and are working on their debut album. They are currently signed to Simon Cowell’s record label Syco. Passenger – Let Her Go enters at #11 UK singer songwriter Mike Rosenberg gets a debut top 40 hit, under the name of Passenger, as Let Her Go comes in at #11. Rosenberg started as a member of rock group Passenger, who released 1 album and then split due to personal differences, he assumes the name of the group now. Let Her Go has already been a huge #1 hit in Australia, Austria, Germany, Ireland and many other countries. After supporting Jools Holland and Ed Sheeran, Passenger debuts at #11 in the UK with Let Her Go. David Guetta feat Neyo & Akon - Play Hard re-enters at #21 French producer David Guetta re-enters just outside the top 20, as album track Play Hard is released properly as a single in the UK. Play Hard takes a sample from Alice Deejay's huge #2 hit Better Off Alone, and also features Neyo and Akon on vocals. The track first charted last year when his album was re-released under the name of Nothing But The Beat 2.0 and the track was "cherry picked". It got to #22 before dropping away, it is now back just 1 place higher but with every likelihood of becoming Mr Guetta's 14th top 10 hit as lead artist. Carly Rae Jepsen - Tonight I'm Getting Over You enters at #35 Canadian singer gets a 3rd top 40 hit this week as latest single Tonight I'm Getting Over You comes in at #35. Carly first came to prominence in a big way as Call Me Maybe hit #1 last year, staying there for 4 weeks and going on to sell well over a million. The follow up single This Kiss unfortunately missed the top 100, however she had a Good Time as her duet with Owl City made #5. Tonight I'm Getting Over You was first released 2 months ago but only now makes the top 40, entering as it does at #35. Amelia Lily – Party Over enters at #40 X-Factor contestant Amelia Lily only just scores her third UK top 40 hit this week as new single Party Over comes in at #40. She debuted at #2 last year with You Bring Me Joy, which followed up earlier this year with #11 hit Shut Up (And Give Me Whatever You Got). In comparison to her debut #2 hit, this could certainly be seen as a bit of an underperformance, the track has also been reduced to 59p. All three singles are taken from Amelia’s forthcoming debut album due for release later this year. The party does indeed appear to be over for Amelia, unless she can turn around her chart fortunes. Michael Buble keeps the #1 album Last week Canadian singer Michael Buble got the year's fastest selling album with To Be Loved, that stays on top for a second week. Frank Turner debuts at #2 to achive his highest placing album to date as new album Tape Deck Heart beats his previous best of #12 with England Keep My Bones. Will I Am debuts at #3 with his album #willpower, featuring hit singles This Is Love, Scream & Shout, and #thatpower but curiously not his #3 smash with JLo and Mick Jagger THE (The Hardest Ever). There are other new albums debuting from Phoenix, Passenger and Snoop Lion (Snoop Dogg turned reggae). Opinion Whilst not a huge fan of Daft Punk, I actually quite like Get Lucky and am glad to see it rise to #1 this week on such big sales. I love I Need Your Love and am glad to see it do so well. Not keen on Can't Hold Us by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, better than that Thrift Shop monstrosity though! Not keen on Loveable Rogues either, on the other hand I love Passenger's Let Her Go. David Guetta & co's Play Hard, Nicky Romero's Like Home and Amelia Lily's Party Over are all pretty unremarkable to me. Pity that Blue missed out with their come back single Hurt Lovers though.

007 Chart Commentary - 21st Apr 2013
Rudimental feat Ella Eyre – Waiting All Night is the new #1 English drum & bass quartet Rudimental get a third UK top 20 hit this week and second chart topper, as Waiting All Night debuts at the top. The group formed in 2011 and hit it big last year with the huge #1 hit single Feel The Love, featuring vocals from 22 year old UK soul singer John Newman. The follow up single Not Giving In also features vocals from Newman, and got to #14 last year. Now single #3, featuring vocals from Ella Eyre, does much better by topping the singles chart. All 3 tracks are from Rudimental’s forthcoming debut album entitled Home. Will.i.am feat Justin Bieber - #thatpower enters at #2 US rapper Will.i.am is back at the top end of the UK charts this week, alongside Canadian teen singer Justin Bieber. The rather oddly titled new single #thatpower, from Will’s upcoming album, debuts at #2. This is a follow up to Will’s huge #1 smash Scream & Shout, which featured a certain Britney Spears and is at #35. William also debuts at #34 with Fall Down, which features Disney star (and daughter of Billy Rae) Miley Cyrus. Will is of course a mentor on the current series of The Voice UK and started his career as a Black Eyed Pea in 1997, getting a first breakthrough in 2000 with Where Is The Love? 19 year old Justin Bieber first started in 2008, #thatpower is now his 5th top 10 hit in total since then. Daft Punk – Get Lucky enters at #3 For surprise big hit of the week, Daft Punk make a somewhat unexpected return to the upper reaches this week with Get Lucky. The track was released on Friday and debuts in the top 5, a feat repeated recently with Born This Way and Skyfall’s releases. The French electronic music duo made their debut in 1996 with #7 hit Da Funk, followed by #5 hit Around The World and a few smaller hits. 2000 got them their biggest hit to date as One More Time came in at #2, behind Can’t Fight The Moonlight by LeAnne Rimes. #14 hit Digital Love and #25 Harder Better Faster Stronger followed, the latter being sampled by Kanye West for his #1 hit Stronger. In 2005 the duo had 2 minor hits with Robot Rock and Technologic, and have been quiet ever since. Now they seemingly come out of nowhere and debut at #3 … they did indeed Get Lucky! PSY – Gentleman enters at #10 South Korean rapper PSY gets his second top 10 hit in the UK as Gentleman debuts at #10. This is of course the follow up to the million selling #1 Gangnam Style, which was a huge #1 in over 30 different countries. Its accompanying video has become the most viewed video in YouTube’s history with over 1.5 billion. This track therefore has a lot to live up to, it has nonetheless entered at #11 in the UK and comes from PSY’s sixth album PSY6 (Six Rules) Part 1. Clean Bandit – Mozart’s House enters at #17[/u] For another very unusual song, Mozart’s House by British pop group Clean Bandit. The band first formed in 2009 and have released several independent singles since, including A&E and Telephone BAnking. Now Mozart’s House is their first chart hit, coming in at #17, effectively a dance song containing a sample from a classical piece. As the title suggests that sample is from classical composer Mozart, the first movement of Mozart's String Quartet No. 21 in D (AKA the Prussian No 1). Little Mix – How Ya Doin’ enters at #23 X-Factor winning girl group Little Mix get their 5th UK top 40 hit this week, as How Ya Doin’ debuts at #23. For the single mix, they have enlisted the help of music producer and rapper Missy Elliot. Consisting of Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, and Jade Thirlwall, the 4 piece group first came to light as winners of 2011’s X-Factor. Their winners cover of Damien Rice’s Cannonball is the lowest selling winners single, totalling less than 500,000. Despite that, they went on to hit #1 again with Wings, which sold quite respectably. The girls hit #4 with single DNA which is taken from their album of the same name. Then they made #12 with Change Your Life, and now debut at #23 with How Ya Doin’ with the likelihood of rising into the top 20. Mat Zo feat Porter Robinson – Easy enters at #28 23 year old British trance / house / drum and bass music producer Matan Zohar gets his first UK top 40 hit under the name of Mat Zo, Easy debuts at #28. Mat Zo has remixed for the likes of U2, Kylie Minogue and Above & Beyond, and has several of his own tracks available from his MySpace page. Easy is however his first commercial release and features US dance producer Porter Robinson, who had a #9 hit last year with Language, featuring an uncredited vocalist Heather Bright. Michael Buble tops the albums chart this week 37 year old Canadian singer Michael Buble tops the album chart this week for the third time as his sixth studio album To Be Loved becomes the year’s fastest seller. US rock band Fall Out Boy debut at #2 with their fifth album Save Rock & Roll. Emeli Sande is back up to #3, ahead of Pink and Justin Timberlake, with Paramore dropping from #1 to #6. Other new entries can be found from the likes of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Angel, Steve Earle and Kid Cudi. Opinion I am not a big fan of Rudimental really, although Waiting All Night is alright and far far better than that Will I Am / Bieber rubbish at #2. I am not a fan of Daft Punk but I do rather like Get Lucky and glad to see it almost #1. I admit to actually liking Gangnam Style eventually, but I don’t think much of Gentleman … just sounds the same really. I actually quite like Little Mix’s How Ya Doin’ even if it is a bit gimmicky. Not a fan of that Clean Bandit song much, nor of the Mat Zo/Porter Robinson one really. Not a fan of Buble either, although I do like his single and the Bryan Adams duet on his album.

007 Chart Commentary - 14th Apr 2013
Duke Dumont feat A*M*E – Need U (100%) stays at #1 Staying at #1 for a second week and comfortably ahead of the competition again is Need U (100%) by Duke Dumont feat A*M*E. This is the year’s 9th different #1 so far, with Bingo Players – Get Up (Rattle), Will.i.am / Britney Spears – Scream & Shout and Justin Timberlake – Mirrors being the other 3 tracks to have spent longer than a single week … JT staying for 3. This means again that Pink and Nate Reuss spend a 5th week in the top 3 with Just Give Me A Reason, now the biggest selling single from her current album The Truth About Love. Wizard Of Oz Cast – Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead enters at #2 Now for a surprise hit that probably nobody saw coming, until Monday of this week! Former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher died on Monday of this week, with mixed and often extreme reactions being seen throughout the nation. Several years ago, detractors of Mrs Thatcher had launched a Facebook campaign to get the track Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead to #1 on the week of her death, as a sort of protest to her policies and their effects. As a result, this 1939 Wizard Of Oz track has appeared in the top 40 for the very first time. The track is only 51 seconds in length and curiously credits Judy Garland in some places, despite her not singing on the track. There was much controversy over whether the BBC should play the song, it was decided to play a newsbeat report which features a 5 second clip. There is also a track from punk group Notsensibles entitled I’m In Love With Margaret Thatcher which charted at #37. Nina Nesbitt – Stay Out enters at #21 18 year old Edinburgh based singer songwriter Nina Nesbitt (no relation to Rab C Nesbitt!) debuts at #21 with new single Stay Out. Nina started her music career by writing and recording songs in her bedroom, with several videos being posted via YouTube. In the last few years, Nina has supported Ed Sheeran and Example on tour, and embarked on her very own tour. She released 3 EPs last year but none of them charted in the UK top 100. However Stay Out becomes her first UK top 40 single this week, just missing the top 20 and debuting at #21. Paramore - Still Into You enters at #26 US rock band Paramore were first formed in 2004 then released 3 singles the following year, none of which charted. However Misery Business was their first chart hit in the UK, making #17 as it did in 2007. However it wasn’t until 2009 that the band made the top 40 again, that was with their highest charter to date Ignorance. That made #14 and was followed by flop single Brick By Boring Brick then The Only Exception, which got to #31. Monster made #21 in 2011, taken from the Transformers soundtrack. Earlier this year the band’s new single Now made #39, taken from their 4th album Paramore. Now they debut at #26 with the second single from that album Still Into You, after a Graham Norton Show performance. AlunaGeorge - Attracting Flies enters at #30 London electronic music duo AlunaGeorge make their top 40 debut in their own right this week as Attracting Flies debuts at #30, after spending a few weeks in the lower reaches. Consisting of Aluna Francis (vocals) and George Reid (production), the duo scored a huge #2 hit this year featuring on Disclosure’s White Noise. AlunaGeorge finished second in the BBC Sound Of 2013 poll and have been tipped for big things in the coming year. The duo released their debut single last year, Your Drums Your Love made #50. Both tracks are from their forthcoming debut album Body Music, due for release later on this year. Nicki Minaj feat Lil Wayne - High School enters at #31 Trinidad born US rapper and singer Onika Tanya Maraj makes her return to the top 40 this week as Nicki Minaj, High School is a new entry at #31. Nicki first came on the scene in this country as featured artist on Will.i.am’s 2010 #11 hit Check It Out. After 2 #71 hits, #22 hit Moment 4 Life became her first proper top 40 hit in the UK. That was followed by Girls Fall Like Dominoes in 2011, which made #24 and sampled Domino by Big Pink. She then had a proper big hit with Superbass, peaking at #8 that same year, followed by #16 hit Fly with Rihanna. Last year she scored a huge #2 hit with Starships, followed by the #8 peaking Pound The Alarm. She has since had a few smaller hits, including #20 Va Va Voom and now a #31 entry with the track High School. Paramore top the albums chart this week US rock band Paramore debut at #1 with their 4th album entitled Paramore, this follows up 2010’s Brand New Eyes which also hit #1. Justin Timberlake thus drops to #2, ahead of Pink climbing to #3, Emeli Sande climbing to #4 and Imagine Dragons slipping to #5. 24 year old London based singer songwriter James Blake debuts at #8 with second album Overgrown. Rock band Stone Sour debut at #11 with part 2 of their House Of Gold & Bones album set. 1980’s band Orchestral Manoeuvers in the Dark’s new album English Electric comes in at #12, their highest placing since 1991’s Sugar Tax. Other new entries come from The Knife, Sarah Brightman, Kurt Vile and Madeline Peyroux. Opinion I am happy to see Duke Dumont lead the singles chart again this week, as I really like Need U (100%). Much as it is amusing to see Judy Garland and the Wizard Of Oz Cast get a top 5 hit in 2013, I think it is in very bad taste regardless of opinions of Thatcher and her government. I love that Nina Nesbitt track and am glad to see it almost make top 20 this week. I do not like any of Nicki Minaj’s “songs” to date and High School is certainly no exception … Lil Wayne makes it worse if that is possible. I haven’t liked much of Paramore’s past work with The Only Exception being just that so far, I do like Still Into You though. I love that new AlunaGeorge track and also quite like Disclosure's White Noise (on which they appear), they certainly have potential. Great to see Fade by Jakwob/Maidai back in the charts, hope it can climb more in the coming weeks.
