Owl City climbs to #1 with Fireflies As widely tipped, US synthpop singer Adam Young climbs a place to reach #1 as Owl City with his Fireflies. He replaces Iyaz as his iPod is still stuck on replay ... isn't it time he got a new one then?! Iyaz had a healthy lead at the start of the week only to be overtaken at the end of the week by Owl City. Glee Cast rise to #3 with their version of Don't Stop Believing and also enter at #36 with their version of Rihanna's #1 hit Take A Bow. Example - Won't Go Quietly enters at #6 This week Brittish rapper Elliot John Gleave gets his very first top 10 hit single at #6, as he states that he Won't Go Quietly. He is better known as Example, having chosen that name because his initials EG are often used to denote an example. Whilst Example did release several limited edition singles in 2007, his only previous hit was last year's Watch The Sun Come Up which made #19. Both singles come from his forthcoming second album entitled Won't Go Quietly ... it seems he won't! JLS - One Shot climbs to #10 Boyband JLS shoot up 22 places to #10 this week with their third single, from their self titled album which has now sold close to 1 million copies in the UK alone. Time will tell whether One Shot can repeat the chart topping success of their first 2 singles Beat Again and Everybody In Love. Doubtful as there is no X-Factor for promotion and the Haiti Relief song Everybody Hurts is due for release in a week's time. Alicia Keys - Empire State Of Mind Part II (Broken Down) climbs to #15 Alicia Keys continues her climb up the charts with what is to be her next UK single, her solo version of Empire State Of Mind. Her solo version of the song has now climbed above Jay Z's version which has had a long chart run and just drops out of the top 20 this week. Girls Can't Catch - Echo enters at #19 New girl group Girls Can't Catch this week get their second chart hit and despite heavy promotion only just manage to scrape into the top 20. It seems that they cannot Echo the success of fellow girl groups Sugababes, Girls Aloud and Saturdays as they can't catch a top 10 placing with this. Their previous chart hit came in the form of last year's #26 hit Keep Your Head Up. Biffy Clyro - Many Of Horror (When We Collide) climbs to #20 Scots rockers Biffy Clyro score their 4th successive top 20 hit this week with their bizarrely titled rock ballad Many Of Horror as it rises all the way to #20. This has also helped their album Only Revolutions to rise up to #13, the band's 5th studio album. Biffy can now lay claim to 7 top 20 singles to date, out of 21 releases in total. Jay Sean feat Sean Paul & Lil John - Do You Remember enters at #23 Jay Sean scores an immediate follow up to his top 3 single Down, which has just dropped out of the top 40. This time Jay can be found collaborating with Sean Paul and Lil John for Do You Remember, the track debuts at #23 with the distinct possibility of climbing in the next few weeks leading up to full release. Pitbull feat Akon - Shut It Down enters at #40 US rapper Pitbull this week scores his 3rd UK top 40 hit in the form of Shut It Down, following up top 10 hits I Know You Want Me and Hotel Room Service. Shut It Down features Akon, so effectively is his follow up to David Guetta's #1 hit Sexy Bitch on which Akon was the featured singer. This is the 4th single to come from Pitbull's current album Rebelution, however he plans to release at least 7 singles from the album in the future. This week's non-top 40 hits! Manchester electro duo Hurts came 4th in the BBC Sound Of 2010 poll, but still miss out with debut single Wonderful Life. Paolo Nutini may be riding high in the album charts right now, however he somewhat flops with latest single 10 Out Of 10. Madness once again flop with Forever Young, the 4th single to be taken from their latest studio album. In October last year Irish rockers Ash announced that they would release 26 singles over the next year at 1 per fortnight, however none have become hits so far including the latest single Space Shot. Florence & The Machine stay at #1 with their Lungs album Florence gets a second week at #1 with her Machine and the hugely successful Lungs album, after spending 5 weeks at #2 last year behind the late MJ. This week's highest new entry comes in at #3 for Welsh rockers Lost Prophets with their 4th studio album The Betrayed, following up the chart topping Liberation Transmission. Child star Justin Bieber enters one place below with his debut album My World, but just misses out on a top 10 single as One Time drops a place this week. One Republic also released their second album Waking Up but somewhat flops, along with Guillemots lead singer Fyfe Dangerfield. Next week's big releases There is not much in the way of new singles due next week so Owl City is looking good for a second week on top. We could see an invasion of Haiti charity singles as there is a compilation album released featuring contributions from Jay Z/Bono/The Edge/Rihanna, Coldplay, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake and more. Personal opinion I am glad to see Owl City get #1 with Fireflies, I love this track and think its miles better than Replay which is good as well (if a bit generic). I think it's terrible how Glee Cast's abysmal version of Don't Stop Believing has gone top 3 but the great original by Journey slips a place. Example is not really my kind of thing but actually I like Won't Go Quietly better than I thought I would. One Shot is definitely JLS's best song to date, I thought the last 2 were OK but nothing special at all. I still love Alicia Keys' solo version of Empire State Of Mind, miles better without Jay Z ruining it with his inane rap! No wonder Girls Can't Catch haven't made the top 10 as the song is just plain boring to me, I'm not a fan of girl groups in general but I do think the Saturdays Ego is really good and deserved better than #9. I really like Biffy Clyro's new song, I think they've got better and better with their last few releases and Many Of Horror is no exception. I am happy that Florence is still at #1 with the absolutely brilliant Lungs album, also pleasing to see Pixie and Paloma's albums continuing to do well.

007 Chart Commentary
Iyaz – Reply stays at #1for a second week So US singer and rapper Iyaz remains at #1 this week for a second week, real name Keidran Jones was actually born in the Virgin Islands. Iyaz’s debut album My Life is due for release shortly, so time will tell if he can gain more success over the course of this year. Owl City – Fireflies enters at #2 Male synth singer Adam Young better known as Owl City, scored a huge #1 hit last year in his native US charts with Fireflies. Not originally due for release until next month, the track has now been given an early release. As has happened several times recently with releases that are delayed, its early release is due to a fake cover version threatening to become a hit on iTunes. The result is a #2 debut (from #50 last week) and a strong possibility for #1 over the next few weeks. Glee Cast – Don’t Stop Believing enters at #5 Glee is the latest hugely popular US musical comedy drama sensation to hit our TV screens over here, in which the cast sing cover versions of popular songs. Unlike TV talent shows and the like, these covers have immediately become available to purchase digitally and so are chart eligible. Leading the way is the cast’s cover of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing, and incredibly enters the chart 1 place ahead of the original track. Other Glee cover versions have entered outside the top 40, including Rehab, Gold Digger, Take A Bow, On My Own and Can’t Fight This Feeling. Plan B – Stay Too Long enters at #9 Plan B is an English born rapper and singer released his debut album in 2006 but has not actually achieved mainstream success until now. He did feature prominently on End Credits by Chase & Status which made #9 at the tail end of last year. This week, he matches that peak but does not stay too long yet … only in his first week! Jay Z feat Mr Hudson – Young Forever climbs to #13 US rapper Jay Z scores another top 20 hit from his latest album, the hugely successful Blueprint III. Young Forever features guest vocals from Mr Hudson and contains a sample of Forever Young by German group Alphaville. Alicia Keys – Empire State Of Mind (Broken Down) climbs to #23 Talking of Jay Z whilst his collaboration with Alicia Keys Empire State Of Mind continues to do well, the original track by Alicia Keys on her own is making progress up the charts. Alicia’s album climbs into the top 10 for the very first time and her solo version of Empire state Of Mind climbs up to #23. One Republic - All The Right Moves enters at #30 US pop group One Republic this week get a second top 40 hit of their own, third if you include the Timbaland hit Apologise which hit #3 in 2007 followed by #4 hit Stop & Stare and 2 further flop singles. After having been available for a number of weeks now they make All The Right Moves to get #30 debut with second album Waking Up due out next week. JLS – One Shot enters at #32 X-Factor runners up JLS get themselves a third hit this week as One Shot makes its top 40 debut at #32. This of course follows up their 2 #1 hit singles from last year Beat Again and Everybody In Love, time will tell if this one can repeat that success. It is doubtful as they have sold over 1 million of their self titled album and this has no X-Factor backed promotion. Biffy Clyro – Many Of Horror enters at #38 Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro score their forth top 40 hit from current album Only Revolutions, which returns to the top 20 albums this week. The single is due to be released next week and stands a good chance of becoming their 4th successive top 20 hit and 7th in total. Vampire Weekend – Cousins enters at #39 US indie pop band Vampire Weekend get their second top 40 hit this week with a #39 debut for Cousins. The track is essentially an album track download and falls just 1 place short of their only other top 40 hit Oxford Comma. The band formed in 2006 and apparently take their name from a film in which the lead singer stars. The band have built up a good fan base ever since, with their debut album released in 2008. Flops of the week! Delphic may have debuted at #8 in the album charts, however their single Doubt fails to make the top 40 this week. Fyfe Dangerfield was the former lead singer of the Guillemots, his solo debut She Needs Me misses out. As do Alkaline Trio once more with their new single called This Addiction, it seems the public don’t have an addiction with this band then! Florence & The Machine – Lungs finally goes to #1 in the album charts It has finally happened after 5 weeks stuck behind MJ and last week behind Paolo, Forence makes #1 with Lungs. Highest new entry is from alternative act Vampire Weekend who score their very first top 10 album with their second Contra. 2 places below them at #5 are rockers You Me At Six with their Tips for next week! Owl City could well make it to #1 next week, as could Lost Prophets on the albums. Alexandra Burke, Biffy Clyro and N-Dubz physically release their singles and could see significant climbs. New entries are expected from Girls Can’t Catch, Example, Pitbull and Jay Sean amongst others. Big new albums are also due from the likes of Just Beiber, One Republic and Eels. Personal opinion of 007! I haven’t done an opinionated bit for the last few weeks, as there wasn’t much for me to comment about. There is very little love on here for Iyaz Replay, however I really like it and am glad it’s #1 for a second week now. I also like Fireflies by Owl City and hope that can make #1 next week as it’s quite a cool song. One that my ears can’t take is Riverside by Sidney Samson, I just don’t like that sort of music! I don’t really like Just Beiber’s One Time either, but I don’t hate it the way some do even although he sounds like a girl! I think Glee Cast are utterly terrible and am appalled at how many of their dire covers have actually sold, even worse is that their sacrilege of Don’t Stop Believing has actually outpeaked the original classic. Don’t mind the Plan B song as it’s something different I suppose, same for Vampire Weekend’s Cousins (in a different way). I really like the Alicia Keys original version of Empire state Of Mind but think Jay Z totally ruined it, as he does everything else. One Shot is the best JLS song yet, better than the average Beat Again and Everybody In Love. I am glad to see Biffy Clyro make an impact with Man Of Horror, one of their best in my opinion. Finally I am very happy to see Florence finally achieve #1 with her brilliant Lungs album, well deserved.

007 Chart Commentary
Iyaz - Replay becomes the first new #1 of 2010 So we start the year with another big battle for #1 in the singles chart, this time between 2 brand new acts. Emerging victorious is US R&B singer Iyaz with his debut UK single entitled Replay, next week he will be wanting a replay I suspect to ensure he is still #1! Real name ... was discovered by Usher and then signed the star to his record label after being impressed with his potential. Sidney Samson - Riverside enters at #2 Leading the way for the first part of this week was this year's hot new dance track Riverside by Sidney Samson, however in the end he settles for second place this week. This track has had a massive underground following and has been big in the clubs over the last few months, so now sees an official UK release just ahead of another fake version almost becoming a hit in iTunes. Florence & The Machine - You've Got The Love climbs to #5 After returning to #1 last week Lady Gaga slips to #4, behind Starstrukk by 3 Oh 3 feat Katy Perry which reaches a new peak of #3. This is ahead of an 8 place climb for Florance & The Machine's version of You've Got The Love to finally peak at #5 after 9 weeks in the top 40. Also her album returns to the top 10, this is a result of her Jools Holland performance, the track featuring in Gavin & Stacey and ever increasing airplay. Debut UK single Dog Days Are Over also enters the top 40 for the first time this week at #23, it could only make #82 first time around. Saturdays - Ego climbs to #9 One track whose progress has been slow over the past week got its full release and can now claim a top 10 status. Ego is the second single to be taken from the second Saturdays album Word Shaker, which so far has hardly been a chart shaker in terms of sales. Ego is the girl group's 6th top 10 hit in total, they are still to get that elusive #1 though, the only single so far to miss out was Work which clearly did not work out very well for the girls! Justin Bieber - One Time enters at #14 Another new comer makes his debut this week at #14, in the form of 15 year old singer Justin Bieber. One Time is his first full release in the UK and has been hotly tipped to do well this year, a top 15 start is not bad at all. This is very much a love or hate sort of song, with Justin's vocals sounding like a female at times. Wiley feat Chew Fu - Take That climbs to #20 Hot new grime singer Wiley scored a massive crossover hit last year as Wearing My Rolex peaked at #2, followed by another few smaller hits and an album. Now he makes his return to the charts with a track tipped by some to repeat the success of Wearing My Rolex but seems to have missed the mark somewhat. Last week the track debuted at #22, this week he manages to climb 2 places to at least claim a top 20 placing with Take That ... nothing to do with Gary, Mark, Jason & Howard! Lost Prophets - Where We Belong enters at #32 Rockers Lost Prophets make a return to the lower end of the top 40 this week with their new single Where We Belong, the second to come from their forthcoming new album. They were last seen last year when they made #16 with It's Not The End Of The World ... But I Can See It From Here. Several of last year's hits reenter the top 40 As has become the norm at this time of year, several of last year's biggest hits make re-entries due to iTunes Gift Cards, year end charts and so forth. La Roux returns at #28 with their #2 hit In For The Kill following its use on an advert, Paolo with his #17 hit Pencil Full Of Lead, and oddly enough 30 Second To Mars with Kings & Queens back at #40. Re-entries from last week sticking around include Gaga's Poker Face, KoL's Sex On Fire and Miley's Part In The USA. This week's and last week's flops Not much has been released this week or last, however amongst those failing is Esmee Denters as she misses the top 40 and also admits it! There are 2 phone related tracks in the lower end of the top 75 from Beyonce and Lady Gaga, both of which miss out. Video Phone by Beyonce featuring Lady Gaga has had its full release, however Telephone by Lady Gaga featuring Beyonce is yet to come and could well make it in weeks to come. Paolo Nutini - Sunny Side Up stays at #1 in the album charts So following a return to #1 last week, Sunny Side Up by Paolo Nutini remains at the top of the album chart listings ahead of Florence & The Machine who get another week #2 after spending 5 behind MJ last year. Mumford & Sons reach a new peak of #7 with Sigh No More, as does Alicia Keys with her Element Of Freedom. This week's highest and only new entry comes from Elvis Presley who would have been 75 years old this week so enters at #8 with yet another hits compilation, this time containing 75 songs. There are returns for 2 albums that have underperformed so far - Pixie Lott Turn It Up and Paloma Faith Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful. Next week's top tips! Next week we can expect a big new entry for Fireflies by Owl City which has been released early again due to a fake version, Delphic could well be top 5 or even #1 in the albums as could Vampire Weekend. Singles climbers are expected from Alexandra Burke, Justin Bieber, Jay Z/Mr Hudson, N-Dubz/Mr Hudson and others, new entries from Plan B, One Republic, Biffy Clyro and You Me At Six are also possible.

007 Chart Of 2009
Here are my favourite songs of 2009, my personal chart of the year. La Roux is at #1 with In For The Kill, both them and Take That have 2 songs in the top 10 and Gaga having 2 songs in the top 20. Both Laura Izibor and Beautiful Small Machines make the top 10, despite peaking at #2 in the weekly charts. The only one to make this chart but not the weekly top 5 is Release Me by Agnes, it did last for 15 weeks though. Other than U2 at #40, all the rest made top 3 at least and stayed for 10 weeks or more on the weekly's. 01 La Roux - In For The Kill 19-03-01-01-01-01-01-01-02-02-03-07-10-08-11-14-16-20-24-28-37-40 (22 wks) 02 Little Boots - Remedy 28-25-29-25-16-03-02-01-01-01-01-01-03-07-13-15-17-25-39 (19 wks) 03 Noisettes - Never Forget You 09-08-07-11-12-04-01-01-02-04-03-05-09-16-24-32-36 (17 wks) 04 Take That - Up All Night 19-32-07-02-04-04-03-02-02-01-01-01-02-03-09-17-27-34 (18 wks) 05 Daniel Merriweather - Red 07-01-01-03-01-02-04-07-08-12-18-28-36 (13 wks) 06 La Roux - Bulletproof 15-11-09-04-04-05-01-01-01-02-02-04-07-06-11-16-20-26-33 (19 wks) 07 Take That - Said it All 10-07-06-01-01-01-03-05-13-24-38 (11 wks) 08 Laura Izibor - Shine 17-10-03-03-02-02-04-06-11-16-20-28-36 (13 wks) 09 Arctic Monkeys - Crying Lightning 01-01-01-03-03-05-09-11-16-16-24-31 (12 wks) 10 Beautiful Small Machines - Robots In Love 37-28-16-02-02-02-04-06-11-17-25-32-38-36 (14 wks) 11 Lily Allen - The Fear 23-16-10-07-01-01-01-02-03-06-12-18-25-34-40 (15 wks) 12 Leona Lewis - Happy 27-22-08-02-02-01-01-01-02-06-08-11-15-23-31 (15 wks) 13 Lady Gaga - Bad Romance 27-27-14-07-03-04-01-01-01-01 (10 wks+) 14 Cheryl Cole - Fight for This Love 29-15-07-03-01-01-02-04-07-14-15-20-26-33 (14 wks) 15 Ian Brown - Stellify 02-02-02-05-12-17-19-23-26-35 (10 wks) 16 Mika - We Are Golden 08-04-02-03-05-06-01-01-06-09-16-28 (12 wks) 17 Taio Cruz - Break Your Heart 17-04-01-02-05-07-09-15-20-27-32 (11 wks) 18 Pet Shop Boys - Love Etc 37-11-03-02-02-04-03-06-11-19-27 (11 wks) 19 Paloma Faith - New York 20-23-09-01-03-05-07-08-11-23-31 (11 wks) 20 Lady Gaga - Poker Face 36-30-21-19-24-10-07-12-05-02-06-07-14-12-16-21-29-39 (18 wks) 21 Gary Go - Wonderful 13-07-04-05-05-08-11-23-32-20-20-22-27-36-40 (15 wks) 22 Pixie Lott - Cry Me Out 25-25-25-21-15-12-08-05-03-07-06-07-11-14-15 (15 wks+) 23 Beyonce - Halo 31-30-27-17-13-08-05-04-01-01-02-03-06-12-19-21-25-33-37 (19 wks) 24 Ou Est Le Swimming Pool - Dance The Way I Feel 30-23-06-04-01-01-03-05-08-10-14 (11 wks+) 25 Little Boots - New In Town 27-14-09-04-02-02-04-04-06-10-20-29 (12 wks) 26 Alexandra Burke - Hallelujah 20-09-04-01-02-06-12-24-33 (9 wks) 27 Jordin Sparks - One Step At A Time 10-05-02-01-04-06-12-23-27-38 (10 wks) 28 La Roux - I'm Not Your Toy 13-07-03-08-06-07-11-17-29-37-36 (11 wks) 29 Pet Shop Boys - All Over The World 09-03-03-02-02 (5 wks+) 30 Mr Hudson - White Lies 02-02-01-03-04-06-14-22-33 (9 wks) 31 Robbie Williams - You Know Me 11-04-01-02-02-05-08 (7 wks+) 32 Kelly Clarkson - My Life Would Suck Without You 19-09-10-06-02-04-04-10-19-28-33 (11 wks) 33 Stereophonics - InnocentStereophonics - Innocent 14-07-03-02-04-08-11-12-16-24-29 (11 wks+) 34 Lady Gaga - Paparazzi 30-37-37-29-21-15-06-03-04-03-06-11-19-24-32 (15 wks) 35 Gary Go - Open Arms 26-22-19-18-23-10-07-07-07-05-09-03-05-09-23-35 (16 wks) 36 Rihanna - Russian Roulette 05-02-04-05-07-11 (6 wks+) 37 Marmaduke Duke - Rubber Lover 12-06-01-02-05-12-23-31 (8 wks) 38 Agnes - Release Me 34-25-18-13-10-09-06-10-11-14-12-18-26-32-39 (15 wks) 39 Little Boots - Earthquake 19-19-13-10-06-02-05-06-10-13-16 (11 wks+) 40 U2 - I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight 09-08-07-04-04-07-12-18-23-36 (10 wks)

007 Chart Commentary
Yes I thought I'd encorporate a year end review which will be up very shortly. I'd agree about Bob Dylan and Mumford, they should be above some of the other classic xmas songs, I do like Slade, Wham, Mariah, etc xmas songs but I think the new ones should get a chance instead.

007 Chart Commentary
Joe McElderry climbs to #1 this week for the last chart of 2009 He may have been beaten to Christmas #1 by Rage Against The Machine, now X-Factor winner Joe McElderry fights back to get that number one after all. The RATM campaign was never going to last long, however the very high sales achieved at the beginning of the week ensures that Killing In The Name only drops to #2 this week. Not much more action in this week's chart, here is a quick summary :- Cheryl Cole and Will I Am's 3 Words reaches a new peak of #4.Journey Don't Stop Believing continues to climb and reaches #7 this week. There are 2 tracks featuring Mr Hudson on the rise this week, N-Dubz Playing With Fire reaches #19 and Jay Z Young Forever re-enters at #30.Xmas classics reach a new 2009 peak - Pogues #12, Mariah #18, Wham re-enter at #34, slade re-enters at #35 and Chris Rea re-enters at #40.Just missing out are Must Be Santa by Bob Dylan, Winter Winds by Mumford & Sons and Video Phone by Beyonce & Lady Gaga.Michael Buble - Crazy Love is this week's #1 album So after 4 weeks atop the album chart listings, Susan Boyle is replaced by Michael Buble who scores his very first #1 album with Crazy Love. With no new releases to speak of, there are only reshuffles really in the album chart this week with big sellers like Lady Gaga, JLS, Robbie, Take That and Cheryl Cole all consolidating their positions. 2009 Year Summary January The start of the year saw Lady Gaga release her debut single Just Dance in the UK after having achieved success elsewhere, the track stayed at #1 for 3 weeks. The Saturdays scored a 3rd top 10 hit as they had Issues, Kevin Rudolf Let It Rock up into the top 5, Kid Cudi scored a massive #2 hit Day & Night and MGMT finally made top 20 with sleeper hit Kids. Beyonce scored a surprise hit with former B side track Single Ladies, which proved to be popular in its own right. In January, 50 Cent didn't Get Up to the top 20, Sugababes (with Keisha still in) said No Can Do to the top 20, and Neyo was Mad he couldn't go beyond #19! Girls Aloud scraped in at #10 with The Loving Kind, following up the massive #1 The Promise. James Morrison scored his biggest hit to date with Nelly Furtado as Broken Strings finally peaked at #2. The Script only peaked at #21 with Breakeven however the track did have staying power, as did Britney's Circus which only reached #13. February One of the many acts to appear on the BBC Sound of 2009 poll was indie group White Lies, their album went straight to #1 but their singles To Lose My Life and Farewell To The Fairground missed the top 30 (peaking at #34 and #33 respectively). Lady Gaga's album The Fame was released but could only make #3 initially, it did go on to make #1 and ended up as one of the top 5 best sellers of the year. Grime artist Tinchy Stryder finally got commercial success as Take Me Back made #3 (alongside Taio Cruz), the start of better things to come. Pink was Sober as she made #9, Jason Mraz made #11 in a very long chart run with I'm Yours, Alesha Dixon's slow breathing got her to a career high of #3 and Daniel Merriweather's Change did him good making #8. Franz Ferdinand's comeback didn't go too well as lead single Ulysses could only make #20 and album Tonight made #2 but sunk without a trace the following week. Eminem's comeback however did go well as despite promising to hang up his mic, Crack A Bottle made #4! Lily Allen made her successful comeback as new single The Fear debuted at #1 and stayed for 4 weeks. 1990's dance act The Prodigy made a massive comeback as new single Omen peaked at #4 and new album Invaders Must Die debuted at #1 and sold by the bucket load. Irish rockers U2 made their comeback with new single Get On Your Boots but could only make #12, but album No Line On The Horizon was a massive #1 and the band had a very successful 360o tour. Barbadan singer Shontelle hit the top 10 with her T-Shirt as she did her best to sound like Rihanna! March American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson scored her first UK #1 with My Life Would Suck Without You, ahead of US country singer Taylor Swift with her Love Story. Lady Gaga's second single Poker Face kept rising and finally made #1 to end up as the biggest seller of the year, turned out to be an incredible 2009 for this superstar! 2 acts to somewhat miss the mark were male/female duo Honey Ryder as Fly Away only made #31 and singer songwriter Gary Go as Wonderful could only reach #25 and his album flopped. Take That were kept Up All Night as they hit the top 20 with the second single from the still massive selling The Circus album. This year's official Comic Relief single was a cver of Just Can't Get Enough by The Saturdays, however this was beaten to #1 by Flo Rida's Right Round (sampling Dead Or Alive). Akon scored another top 10 hit as Beautiful rose to #8, Chipmunk's debut single Chip Diddy Chip came in at #21, and Kings Of Leon only made #29 with Revelry. The comedy / unofficial Comic Relief single Islands In The Stream by Vanessa Jenkins & Bryn West feat Tom Jones & Barry Gibb made #1. Oasis made #10 with Falling Down, Annie Lennox made #39 with her Shining Light cover, and Katy Perry made #27 with 3rd single Thinking Of You. 1980's electro-pop duo Pet Shop Boys made a fairly successful comeback as lead single Love Etc hit #14 and album Yes made top 5. Beyonce made #4 with her Halo to help her, AR Rahmann & Pussycat Dolls hit #3 with Jai Ho, and Metro Station invited everyone to Shake It as they made the top 10. April The Noisettes finally hit it big with #2 hit Don't Upset The Rhythm, and a #7 peaking album Wild Young Hearts to follow. Indie act Doves followed in the footsteps of Franz by only hitting #28 with new single Kingdom Of Rust, album of the same name didn't do that well either. Scottish dance producer Calvin Harris hit #1 with his huge dance single I'm Not Alone. US singer Ciara and Justin Timberlake hit top 5 as they had Love, Sex & Magic in equal quantities. Electro duo La Roux were another act of the BBC Sound poll, they went In For The Kill and hit #2 with their debut single and album. Frankmusik on the other hand had minor success as Better Of As Two hit #26 and the album didn't do great either. Eminem scored a second hit of the year with #4 peaking We Made You, Prodigy made the top 20 again with Warrior's Dance and Lily Allen had another top 10 success but claimed it's Not Fair! Tinchy Stryder scored a Number One by title and by nature as his collaboration with N-Dubz made the top. Girls Aloud proved that the top 10 was Untouchable as they missed the top 10 for the very first time, Green Day though couldn't even make top 20 with comeback single Know Your Enemy but their album 21st Century Breakdown did hit #1. US Disney star Miley Cyrus hit #11 with the original version of The Climb. May Rapper Ironik hit #3 with his cover of Elton John's Tiny Dancer, joined by Elton himself. U2 missed the top 40 for the first time in their mainstream career as Magnificent made #42. After a break to do solo material, hip hop collective Black Eyed Peas returned this year and scored a second #1 singe with massive comeback single Boom Boom Pow, the start of a great year for them. The Prodigy hit top 10 again with second comeback single Warrior's Dance, Alesha Dixon said Let's Get Excited and made #13, and dance act DeadMau5 & Kaskadehit #14 with I Remember. Dizzee Rascal went Bonkers as he finally released his second comeback single and scored a #1 with it. Daniel Merriweather proved that he is no one hit wonder as ballad Red hit #5 in a long chart run. Scots singer Paolo Nutini made his comeback as Candy made #19 and album Sunny Side Up hit the dizzy heights of #1. June Swedish singer Agnes hit big with #3 hit Release Me, nothing at all to do with Engelbert Humperdinck’s 1967 hit of the same name. Australian twins the Veronicas hit #8 with their debut single Untouched. Singer Victoria Hesketh topped the BBC Sound of 2009 poll as Little Boots, she got her first hit single which entered at a lowly #13, but hey she was New In Town! Soulja Boy reached the top 10 as he asked to Kiss Me Thru The Phone, no thanks! Keri Hilson scored a big hit with Knock You Down as it reached a high of #5. Kasabian proved that the indie genre coould still be big in 2009 as Fire entered at #3 to become their biggest single yet. Kasabian also made #1 with strangely titled mega-selling album West Rider Pauper Lunatic Asylum. Pet Shop Boys got a #21 hit with Did You See Me Coming, hotly tipped Empire Of The Sun hit #14 with We Are The People, and Take That got a #9 hit with Said It All. David Guetta & Kelly Rowland hit #1 with When Love Takes Over, after a fake cover version by Airi L charted at #22. Hot new singer Pixie Lott hit the very top with her debut Mama Do, Paloma Faith also debuted with Stone Cold Sober at a rather lower #17. American Idol winner Jordin Sparks scored a #11 hit as she found herself in a Battlefield, the album didn’t do too well in comparison. July La Roux released their second proper single Bulletproof and entered straight in at #1, the album then hit #2 (behind Jacko). Hotly tipped alternative singer Florence Welch and her Machine hit #12 with first major hit Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up). June saw the sad death of King Of Pop and musical icon Michael Jackson, so as a result 13 of his hit singles were in the top 40 at once, in early July. Leading the way was Man In The Mirror which made #2, he also topped the album chart with Number Ones then Essential Collection for a massive 7 weeks. MJ was beaten to #1 by dance act Cascada who wanted to Evacuate The Dancefloor! Chipmunk scored his very first top 10 hit with Diamond Rings, Arctic Monkeys made their comeback with #12 hit Crying Lightning (famously with no prior airplay or promotion). Rapper Pitbull made top 10 with I Know You Want Me and Lady Gaga got another top 10 hit with Paparazzi peaking at #4. Boyband JLS came second in last year’s X-Factor and hit playdirt with their debut single Beat Again which went to the top. Dance act Chicane also got another top 10 hit with his Poppiholla. August After being part of The Library for the last few years, Mr Hudson finally got his commercial breakthrough with massive #2 hit Supernova which also featured Kanye West. Noisettes did a slow climb up to #20 with highly regarded single Never Forget You. Frankmusik got a second small hit with Confusion Girl which could only limp to #27. Green Day got another small hit with 21 Guns making #36 but Beyonce had Sweet Dreams as she hit #5 with the forth single to come from her huge selling I Am Sasha Fierce album. Black Eyed Peas got a second #1 of the year with I Gotta Feeling which went on to have a massive 17 week stay in the top 10. Tinchy Stryder became the next artist to get 2 #1s in the year as Never Leave You entered at the top. Little Boots had the Remedy as she made #6 with her second full single, the album did ok but not as good as hoped by many. Ian Carey Project scored a big dance hit as he wanted to Get Shaky. Calvin Harris was Ready For The Weekend as he hit #3 with the single and #1 with the album. Peter Andre made a comeback on the back of media hype and a split from Katie Price, Behind Closed Doors hit #4. David Guetta got a second #1 of the year alongside Akon as Sexy Bitch rose to the summit, again following a fake version. Esmee Denters made her debut with Outta Here and Just Jack got to #11, but that was the day he died (not really … just the title of his song). September Dizzee Rascal became the next in line to have 2 chart toppers as he went on Holiday. Biffy Clyro came back with That Golden Rule, the one to score a #10 hit then. Another rapper to make a spectacular comeback was Jay Z, who hit the top alongside Rihanna and Kanye think they Run This Town. This beat Sugababes comeback single Get Sexy to #1, after they had yet another lineup change. The force’s sweetheart Veera Lynn hit the top of the albums chart with her retrospective We’ll Meet Again. Boys & Girls was the second straight #1 for Pixie Lott, ahead of Mika’s comeback We Are Golden at #4. Mini Viva may have Left Her Heart In Tokyo but Muse were having an Uprising, and also hit #1 in the albums. Shakira had a She Wolf in the closet and Madonna had a Celebration as her single made #3 and her hits compilation made #1. Taio Cruz is only gonna Break Your Heart, he got his first #1 and stayed for 3 weeks there. Both Jay Z (Empire State Of Mind with Alicia Keys) and Dizzee Rascal (Dirtee Cash) charted in the top 10 with album tracks this month. October Chipmunk got his very first #1 with Oopsy Daisy ahead of the Saturdays lead single from second album, saying that Forever Is Over. US superstar Whitney Houston made her comeback with Million Dollar Bill which initially was a #12 hit until she performed on X-Factor which propelled the track to #5. Speaking of which, this was the month that the X-Factor live shows started so the hits from that started flowing. Alexandra Burke was first with her Bad Boys which hit the top ahead of Robbie Williams huge comeback single Bodies. Michael Buble made his comeback and scored what is by far his biggest hit single with Haven’t Met You Yet, peaking at #5. Editors made their comeback, new single Papillon may have only made #23 but new album In This Light And On This Evening hit #1. Temper Trap finally hit top 10 with Sweet Disposition and Veronicas got a second top 20 hit at #17 with 4ever, also Mr Hudson got a second hit as he told some White Lies but could only make #20 this time around. Pitbull also provided us with his very own Hotel Room Service, a second top 10 hit for the rapper. November Girls Aloud singer and X-Factor judge Cheryl Cole hit the top of the charts with her solo debut, she had to Fight For This Love and only had 3 Words as that album went to the top too. Charity collective Young Soul Rebels hit #10 with their single I Got Soul, borrowing from the Killers track All These Things I’ve Done. Alphabeat made a comeback but could only hit #20 as they cast The Spell on us, Foo Fighters returned but their Wheels could only take them to #22, their Greatest Hits did go top 5 though. Having been really big in the US, Jay Sean got the biggest hit of his UK career with Down, just behind Westlife with their #2 cover of Daughtry’s What About Now. Miley Cyrus had a Party In The USA but still could not make it past #11. Lady Gaga had another hit as she was caught in a Bad Romance, that track started at #14 and eventually climbed to #1 after an X-Factor performance. Boy band JLS got themselves a second chart topper after they performed Everybody In Love on X-Factor. US singer Ke$ha made her debut as she went Tik Tok into a #5 peak, Snow Patrol made #15 and advised us to Just Say Yes! US rockers Bon Jovi made a comeback with their single We Weren’t Born To Follow which could only make #25 and album The Circle which did make #2. Disgraced US singer Chris Brown reappeared with new single I Can Transform Ya but could only hit top 30, album Graffiti also flopped. Former X-Factor winner Leona Lewis released new single Happy which was widely expected to go to #1 but had to settle for runner’s up. Also with an X-Factor performance to help, Black Eyed Peas beat her to #1 with their third #1 of the year Meet Me Halfway. JLS released their album in the same week as Robbie’s Reality Killed The Video Star and beat him to #1. N-Dubz, Britney and Sugababes also charted in the top 10 with their respective new singles, more than can be said for Shakira as Did It Again only made #26. Like last year the X-Factor Finalists 2009 released a charity song and hit #1 with big sales, this time it was with MJ’s You Are Not Alone. December 50 Cent hit the top 20 with his track Baby By Me, a collaboration with Neyo. After many changes by her record company and an X-Factor performance, Mariah Carey’s comeback didn’t go well as her cover of I Want To Know What Love Is limped in at #19 and album flopped. However Rihanna did well by hitting #2 with her game of Russian Roulette and top 20 album Rated R. Peter Kay topped the charts for a fortnight with his Official Children In Need Medley featuring a video with animal puppets. Britain’s Got Talent spawned an unlikely star in the form of singer Susan Boyle and her big voice! SuBo got the fastest selling debut album of all time with I Dreamed A Dream and top 10 single Wild Horses from it. Alicia Keys hit #8 with her comeback single off the back of an X-Factor performance … but hey It Doesn’t Mean Anything! Timbaland made a comeback with another Nelly Furtado collaboration, Morning After Dark peaked at #6. Chipmunk made #10 with forth single Look For Me, and Robbie made top 10 with You Know Me. Just for a change, the battle for Christmas #1 was not a foregone conclusion thanks to a Facebook campaign to get Rage Against The Machine to #1 with their 1992 single Killing In The Name. In a very close battle, Rage made #1 ahead of X-Factor winner Joe McElderry who had to sing a cover of The Climb by Miley Cyrus. Hip hop act 3 Oh 3 along with Katy Perry made a high debut at #5 as they were Starstrukk. After featuring on the X-Factor and rumoured to be the winner’s single, Journey’s 1980’s rock anthem Don’t Stop Believing finally made the top 10 peaking at #7 (so far). There were festive offerings from George Michael (made #14) and Pet Shop Boys (a lowly #40) and old classics from Pogues, Mariah, Wham, Slade and Chris Rea as has become the norm. Personal opinion of 007 - Week and Year I am happy to see Rage fall off #1 but am not happy that Joe's got his #1 after all as The Climb is such a lame song and the ultimate lesson would have been to have it stall at #2. I really like 3 Words and am happy to see it get a top 5 peak, also good to see the festive classics get a look in there ... shame that Wizzard and Shaky couldn't make it this year though! Whilst I really like Poker Face and especially Bad Romance, I don’t really care for the rest of Lady Gaga’s musical output and think she’s a tad overrated. Still good that she’s been successful this year, along with the likes of Lilly Allen and Beyonce. However, I absolutely love La Roux, In For The Kill is my favourite song of the year. This comes a close second to Little Boots Remedy, I think Little Boots should have been more successful and her album is so underrated. Same for Noisettes, they should have hit big with more than just the single Don’t Upset The Rhythm … Never Forget You was brilliant and Wild Young Hearts a fantastic album. I don’t care too much for Calvin Harris, I’m Not Alone was ok but that’s it really. He is far better than the pure rubbish that is Tinchy Stryder or even Dizzee Rascal … quite what anyone sees in either of these artists is beyond me. Black Eyed Peas are quite good and probably did deserve success I guess, I do really like I Gotta Feeling and Meet Me Halfway but not Boom Boom Pow! They are far better than the still rubbish N-Dubz and Chipmunk isn’t great despite getting better with each single he released. Pixie Lott on the other is fully deserving of her success, however the Turn It Up album should have done better. One who I think should have done better is the very versatile and brilliant Paloma Faith, her album is great … always next year eh! JLS are ok but very overrated, both Beat Again and Everybody In Love are catchy songs but not deserving of quite such big success. Alexandra Burke is rather good, Bad Boys is not what I expected but actually quite catchy but I was underwhelmed by her album as a whole. Leona’s new one is good if not as good as seminal debut Spirit, that would be difficult to top for anyone though. As you probably know I hate both Rage and Joe’s songs, but I do think Joe has potential if he is given good material of his own to sing … time will tell.
