Rage Against The Machine – Killing In The Name becomes this year’s xmas #1 In one of the closest and most interesting battles for Christmas #1 in many years, the perhaps rather surprising winner is Rage Against The Machine. This all started off when a Facebook campaign was launched to encourage people to download Killing In The Name as a protest at Simon Cowell’s monopoly on the festive #1. So following massive publicity, people have downloaded the track in their masses and as such succeeded in getting a non X-Factor Christmas #1 for the first time since Band Aid 20 did it in 2004. Killing In The Name originally peaked at #25 in 1992 when first released and considering how deliberately non-commercial RATM’s sound is, to have achieved such massive sales is phenomenal whether or not you like the song itself. Joe McElderry – The Climb enters at #2 Joe McElderry is of course this year’s winner of a certain TV talent show called The X-Factor! In the previous 4 years, each winner’s song has gone to #1 for Christmas as meticulously planned by Mr Cowell and his team! In 2004, Steve Brookstein was beaten by Band Aid 20 only to rise to #1 in the new year with his cover of Against All Odds. Then came Shayne Ward with That’s My Goal, followed by Leona Lewis with A Moment Like This and Leon Jackson When You Believe. Last year of course saw Alexandra Burke top the charts with her version of Hallelujah, so what of this year’s song by Joe McElderry. The song chosen for him was The Climb, first sung by Miley Cyrus reaching #11 in May this year for the Disney star. Miley’s version re-enters this week at #31 by the way. 3 Oh! 3 feat Katy Perry – Starstrukk enters at #5 Behind Lady Gaga at #3 and Peter Kay at #4 is a very high new entry for Colorado based group 3 Oh 3, named after the area code for their home town. The band scored their debut hit in July with Don’t Trust Me which peaked at #21 but hung around for a while. Now however they are Starstrukk, as they have none other than Katy Perry on backing vocals. The song becomes an instant top 5 smash with a #5 new entry. Robbie Williams – You Know Me climbs to #6 and Cheryl Cole feat Will I Am – 3 Words climbs to #7 There are 2 climbers into this week’s top 10 from the top 20 last week, following his X-Factor performance Robbie Williams gets another top 10 hit with You Know Me. Following her TV show last week, Cheryl Cole’s new single gets her a second solo top 10 as 3 Words shoots up to #7. Journey – Don’t Stop Believing re-enters at #9 Here is a song with a very long and interesting journey to the top 10! Don’t Stop Believing was first released back in 1982 and peaked at a lowly #62, but has since been regarded as a classic song and has re-entered the charts several times. Most recently the track came back after being performed on X-Factor by Joe, and now after the final reaches a top 10 peak. This means it has taken 28 years to reach this #9 peak, not bad going eh! George Michael – December Song enters at #14 And now for the return of UK singer songwriter George Michael with his festive offering entitled December Song. George Michael first found fame as half of 1980’s duo Wham who had 9 top 10 hits including million selling Last Christmas (which has dropped out of the top 40 this week). George then went on to have massive solo success with a total of 30 top 40 hits, including #1s Careless Whisper, A Different Corner, 5 Live EP, Jesus To A Child and Fast Love. Now he gets another top 20 hit with a song he originally released last year but did not chart due to it being offered as a free download. Leona Lewis – Stop Crying Your Heart Out enters at #29 X-Factor winner Leona Lewis gets herself another new entry with her cover of the Oasis song Stop Crying Your Heart Out. This was originally a #2 hit for Oasis in 2002 from their 5th studio album Heathen Chemistry. Leona Lewis recorded a cover of the track and can be found on her current album Echo, following her X-Factor performance it enters at #29. Queen & The Muppets – Bohemian Rhapsody enters at #32 Now for the comedy record of the week! The Muppets are a group of puppet characters created by Jim Henson, appearing on The Muppet Show and Sesame Street amongst other shows. They have also invaded the music charts in the past, most notably with Halfway Down The Stairs in 1977. Now they team up with Queen to do a tongue-in-cheek cover of their classic Bohemian Rhapsody, a twice million selling single. This also comes complete with a very popular video on You Tube. It would have been funny to see this get #1 instead! Alexandra Burke – Broken Heals enters at #36 X-Factor winner (I wonder how many times that has been mentioned in this commentary) Alexandra Burke gets a third hit as her new single Broken Heals starts off at #36. She also performed Bad Boys as part of a medley on the show and as such sees that track rise to #22 this week. Pet Shop Boys – Christmas EP enters at #40 Chart veterans the Pet Shop Boys make a return to the top 40 this week, with a new EP simply entitled Christmas. It contains 5 tracks, the first being a re-recorded version of their 1997 tracks It Doesn’t Often Snow At Christmas (previously a fan club only download). Also featured is album track All Around The World and covers of Madness My Girl and Coldplay Viva La Vida. The result is a #40 new entry and their very first single to miss the top 30, unless you count a remix of DJ Culture in 1991.Their last top 10 hit came in 2006 I’m With Stupid, 21 in total since West End Girls in 1985. Near misses! Some of the singles to be lost in the xmas rush include Mini Viva whose second single I Wish flops. Vampire Weekend once more fail to hit big with new single Cousins, as does Britain’s Got Talent star Hollie Steele. Michael Buble may still be going strong with his album and last single, however Hold On misses out on a top 40 place for now. Of course, several classic Christmas songs are around but only 2 inside the top 40 this week … it seems everyone already has them. Susan Boyle is xmas #1 in the albums Unsurprisingly SuBo holds on for a 4th wek at the summit of the album charts with I Dreamed A Dream, comfortably ahead of the rest. Michael Buble climbs back up to #2 with Crazy Love ahead of Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga in the top 3. The highest and only significant new entry goes to Alicia Keys with her Element Of Freedom. Personal opinion Whilst I am happy to see something challenge and break the X-Factor monopoly of xmas #1s, this song has to be one of the worst songs I have ever had the misfortune to hear! Frankly I’d have preferred The Muppets to be #1 and I think that’s cringe-worthy. I certainly don’t think The Climb was the best choice of song for Joe to sing, I didn’t even like Miley doing it originally. The song has good lrics but it is such a lame and boring piece of dirge, so for that reason I’m glad that Rage actually got there instead. I quite like Starstrukk and think Katy Perry makes the song really, surprised that it was this big though. I do rather like 3 Words now by Cheryl & Will, it is very different and not your usual bland / pop / R&B rubbish. I am gutted that the Pet Shop Boys could only make #40 with one of the best original xmas songs to come out (ok it is 12 years old but it’s new to most people), saw them live and they were great! I really like George Michael’s festive offering as well and think it deserved top 10 at least, I was impressed with his X-Factor performance. I love Leona’s cover of Stop Crying Your Heart Out and also rather like Broken Heals by Alexandra Burke. All very positive bar for the top 2!

Lady Gaga climbs to #1 with Bad Romance this week We have a new chart topper this week as everyone goes gaga for the lady of the year! Following a typically outrageous performance on X Factor involving a bath tub and toilet, Lady Gaga climbs to #1 with Bad Romance. Gaga is now the second act to score 3 #1 singles within the calendar year and from the same album, following Black Eyed Peas just a few weeks ago. It is also fairly unusual to see a track climb up slowly to #1 rather than enter there and drop (same can be said for Black Eyed Peas), Bad Romance has gone 14-10-11-8-5-3-1 so far. Ke$ha – Tik Tok rises to #5 and Timbaland – Morning After Dark rises to #6 US singer Kesha Rose Sebert reaches a new peak with her single Tik Tok as she rises to #5. The other climber within the top 10 is Timbaland, Nelly Furtado and So Shy with Morning After Dark. Nelly F is now credited on 9 UK top 10 hits, whilst Timbo is on 6, however this is the debut for So Shy in the UK. Chuckie feat LMFAO - Let The Bass Kick In Miami Girl enters at #9 So this week’s highest new entry is the latest house/dance mash-up track. Chuckie is a DJ from Suriname who has done remixes for David Guetta amongst other acts. LMFAO are an electro group from California who have released several singles in their native USA but had no hits to speak of here. All that has now changed as DJ Chuckie’s Let The Bass Kick is mixed up with LMFAO’s I’m In Miami Bitch to give a top 10 new entry. LMFAO means Laughing My Flipping Ass Off by the way for those not familiar wit txt spk! Chipmunk – Look For Me climbs to #10 Rising up the charts again this week is Chipmunk looking for a third top 10 hit and gets just that, as Look For Me rises to #10 this week! Many people compare this to Black Eyed Peas I Gotta Feeling, the question is whether it will have such a long chart run (24+ weeks in the top 40, 17 in the top 10). Robbie Williams – You Know Me climbs back up to #15 Following the album release 5 weeks ago, You Know Me entered the top 20 for Robbie Williams and subsequently dropped to #30 last week. Now with the physical release this week, the track climbs back up to beat its previous #17 peak, and likely to climb further after his X-Factor performance. To date Rob has only had 4 solo singles miss the UK top 10, the only one to miss top 20 was Sin Sin Sin in 2006. Pogues and Mariah’s Christmas classics both enter the top 20 For the week before xmas, Fairytale Of New York rises to #18 for Pogues & Kirsty McColl week and All I Want For Christmas Is You rises to #19 for Mariah Carey. There is also a top 40 re-entry for Wham’s Last Christmas at #39. Festive classics from Shakin’ Stevens, Slade, Wizard, Band Aid and Chris Rea are just outside the top 40 this week, some may enter next week. Terry Wogan & Aled Jones/Sharon Corr – Silver Bells / Me & My Teddy Bear enters at #27 TV and radio personality Sir Terry Wogan once more teams up with singer Aled Jones for a festive single. Their track is a cover of the festive classic Silver Bells which has been recorded by many artists ranging from Andy Williams to Destiny’s Child and more. This is actually a double A Side with Sharon Corr’s version of the children’s song Me & My Teddy Bear. Never mind it is for charity as well. Saturdays – Ego enters at #35 Girl group the Saturdays get themselves a 7th top 40 hit this week as the girls together with their Ego enter at #35. This is a follow up to their #2 hit Forever Is Over, which is still their joint biggest hit along with their charity cover of Just Can’t Get Enough. Top 40 Near Misses! Amongst the tracks missing out this week are Mumford & Sons as the Winter Winds don’t quite carry them to the top 40. Depeche Mode miss out with their latest double A Side Fragile Tension / Hole To Feed. As do Green Day as they experience a 21st Century Breakdown, title track from their mega-selling album. SuBo stays at #1 in the album charts For a third week running, Susan Boyle’s #1 dreams are coming true as she continues to sell by the bucketload. SuBo performed with mega-star Elaine Page this week which has doubtlessly helped also. Lady Gaga’s Fame Monster rises to #2 as a result of her X Factor performance. The highest new entry this week comes in at a lowly #31 for rockers 30 Seconds To Mars as they declare war on the album charts. There are debuts outside the top 40 from Timbaland as he shocks us for a second time with Shock Value II and Chris Brown with his new album entitled Graffiti, amongst others. Next week’s contenders The X Factor Winner will obviously be #1 next week with his/her version of The Climb, however there are a few contenders for the #2 slot. Following a Facebook campaign, we could see Rage Against The Machine re-enter high with Killing In The Name. Pet Shop Boys Christmas EP and Queen with the Muppets could both enter high as well. Personal opinion of the author … not necessarily the opinion of the general public! Whilst I’m not a fan of Lady Gaga, I do really love Bad Romance. I even think it has an edge on the brilliant Poker Face, and am glad to see it rise to #1 even just for 1 week. I hate that Chuckie song and don’t think it should be anywhere near the top 40 let alone top 10! On the other hand I really do love Robbie’s new one and think it deserves top 10, better than Bodies which is good too – true return to form. I am happy to see some xmas classics come back – Pogues and Wham in particular. However I do not like the Terry & Aled song but it is marginally better than the sickly Me & My Teddy Bear by Sharon Corr! I am beginning to like the new N-Dubz song Playing With Fire and I really like the new Saturdays track Ego, an improvement on Forever Is Over. Oh well more X-Factor rubbish for xmas #1 then!

Peter Kay and friends remain at #1 this week So then no change at the top of either singles or albums chart this week, as Peter Kay’s high physical sales continue for his Children In Need Medley of songs. Mr Kay and his animated friends keep Rihanna at #2, as she loses out with her game of Russian Roulette after her X-Factor performance. Rihanna has been unlucky on 3 other occasions also, being beaten by Gnarls Barkley, McFly and X Factor Finalists (2008). Alicia Keys – Doesn’t Mean Anything enters at #8 This week’s highest new entry goes to another act who performed on the X-Factor last weekend, US singer songwriter Alicia Keys. Alicia Augello Cook made her debut in 2001 with the #3 hit Fallin’, her biggest hit in this country thus far. She has had 7 previous top 40 hits, however this is only her third single to make the top 10 but it doesn’t mean anything at all! Alicia performed a medley of this, Empire State Of Mind (which is back up to #11 for Jay Z) and No One (which re-entered the top 75). Timbaland feat Nelly Furtado & So Shy – Morning After Dark enters at #9 US producer, singer and rapper Timothy Zachery Mosley, better known as Timbaland, first started his career in 1996 producing and contributing to songs for Ludacris, Jay Z, Beck, Aaliyah and Tweet amongst others. He made his first successful lead artist album Shock Value, which shocked many people into buying it. That spawned 5 hits singles – the 2 #1s Give It To Me and The Way I Are, and Apologise and Scream. Now he returns to the top 10 with the lead single from his upcoming Shock Value II album, Morning After Dark debuts at #9. Nelly Furtado again appears alongside him and thus clocks up her 9th top 10 hit, French singer So Shy also features. Cheryl Cole feat Will I Am – 3 Words reenters at #25 Upon release of Cheryl Cole’s debut solo album, the title track 3 Words entered the charts at #26 then dropped out 3 week’s later. This week as promotion kicks in for the single it re-enters at #xx, looking very likely to go top 10 at least in the coming weeks. 30 Seconds To Mars – Kings & Queens enters at #28 US rockers 30 Seconds To Mars formed in 1998 fronted by Hollywood actor Jared Leto, but does not use his actor status to promote the band. They released their first album in 2002 with little commercial success until 2006 when they scored 2 top 40 hits The Kill (#28) and From Yesterday (#37), from their second album. Now they release the first single to be taken from album #3 as Kings & Queens enters at #28 this week as their joint biggest hit. N-Dubz feat Mr Hudson – Playing With Fire enters at #32 Hip hop act N-Dubz score a second hit from their current album, Playing with Fire is a collaboration with Mr Hudson and gives the 2 acts another top 40 hit this week. This is another that is several weeks from release and thus can be expected to climb over the next few weeks. 2 festive classics re-enter this week : Mariah Carey at #29 and Pogues/Kirsty MacColl at #31 Well you certainly know that Christmas is on its way when the seasonal favourites start to re-enter the charts. As has been the case for the past few years, Mariah Carey and the Pogues both lead the way. All I Want For Christmas Is You originally made #2 in 1994 and made #4 again after the download rules came into force in 2007, then peaked at #12 last year. Pogues & Kirsty McColl’s Fairytale Of New York was originally a #2 hit in 1987, has re-entered the charts for the last 4 years peaking at #3, #6, #4 then #12. This makes 2009 the 5th consecutive year that the song has charted in the UK. Lily Allen – Who’d Have Known enters at #39 Lily Allen gets another top 40 hit this week with her latest single but if it doesn’t climb next week is set to become her smallest ever, well Who’d Have Known eh? This is Lily’s 8th single release (9 if you include the #8 hit Oh My God, alongside Mark Ronson) and only the second to miss top 20. Her biggest hits still remain 2006 debut Smile and this year’s The Fear which both topped the charts. Near misses! Amongst the this week’s tracks not making the top 40 is Muse with Undisclosed Desires, the first single to miss out since their debut. Prodigy fully released Invaders Must Die as a single but miss the top 40 for the first time ever in their career. Ian Brown misses out with his new single Just Like You, as do rockers Pearl Jam with their new single. Taio Cruz becomes the third artist this year to follow up a #1 with a top 40 miss, with No Other One. Susan Boyle stays at #1 in the album charts Little surprise then that I Dreamed A Dream by Susan Boyle stays at #1 still selling in massive quantities, ahead of both Westlife and Take That. Of the 2 it is Westlife who debut at #2 this week with their 10th album, all of which have gone top 3 in the UK. Take That debut at #3 with The Circus Live, yep you’ve guessed it … it is a live album from The Circus tour! The Coldstream Guards debut at #13 with their album Heroes and opera singer Andrea Bocelli debuts at #18 with My Christmas … what it says on the tin! Personal opinion of Mr Bond! Whilst I am happy to see Peter Kay remain at #1 for Children In Need, I would have liked to see Rihanna get #1 with Russian Roulette as that is a very good song indeed. I love the new Alicia Keys song and am glad to see it debut high up. Same can’t be said for Timbaland’s new song, it just sounds too generic and too similar to his other stuff. However I hate 50 Cent’s new song even more and just think it’s so wrong in many ways! Chipmunk’s songs get better for me, this new one is quite listenable even if it does sound like I Gotta Feeling. 3 Words is ok but nothing special, not a patch on the brilliant Fight For This Love. I’m glad to see some of the festive favourites re-enter again, Mariah and the Pogues are certainly amongst my favourite xmas songs. Love Lily Allen’s new song and didn’t realize how much it sounds like Shine until I saw her perform it alongside Take That, still deserves much higher.

Yeh that's true, I think it may have been a limited release first time though!

Peter Kay’s Children In Need Medley is #1 this week! After entering at #18 last week on just 2 days of sales, Peter Kay climbs to #1 with his All Star Animated Band. Unusually in the download era, this is actually based on huge physical sales as the CD contains the video which in this case is the main selling point for the single. This breaks the trend of X-Factor related chart toppers we have seen every week since Alexandra Burke hit the top when the series started. It also replaces a charity single, You Are Not Alone being for Great Ormond Street Hospital and also based primarily on physical sales. Lady Gaga – Bad Romance climbs to #5, she also enters with some other album tracks. This is a perfect example of a track slowly gaining exposure and rising up the charts slowly and steadily, this week Bad Romance by Lady Gaga rises to #5. Lady Gaga also enters with her Beyonce collaboration Telephone at #30 this week. There is also a release due for a re-recorded version of Beyonce’s track Video Phone, featuring Lady Gaga. Gaga also enters outside the top 40 with several other tracks from her (partly) new album The Fame Monster. Rihanna – Russian Roulette enters at #6 This week marks the return of Barbadan singer Rihanna, who scored 7 top 20 hits from her last album alone. Russian Roulette is the first single to be taken from her 5th album Rated R which is also out this week. This is now her 13th top 20 hit and maintains her 100% strike rate of top 20 hits (Maroon 5 collaboration aside), her 2 #1s so far are Umbrella and Take A Bow. Susan Boyle – Wild Horses enters at #8, I Dreamed A Dream also enters at #37 Susan Boyle of course is the Scottish spinster who famously came on Britain’s Got Talent last year and blew everyone away with her operatic sounding voice. She has of course hardly been out of the limelight ever since with America really falling for her charms and this week she finally releases her debut single and album in the UK. More on the album later, however she enters the top 10 with her debut Wild Horses (actually just an album track and not a single as such). This is a cover of the Rolling Stones 1971 album track which actually didn’t chart in the UK originally but has been covered by numerous artists ranging from Garbage to the Cranberries and John Barrowman. Although not actually released as a single, this is used as the lead track to her album and therefore charts in the top 10. Also charting for SuBo at #37 is the song that made her famous and she originally performed on BGT I Dreamed A Dream from the musical Les Miserables. Mariah Carey – I Want To Know What Love Is enters at #19 Now for another track released and charting on the same week as the parent album, Mariah Carey’s new single enters at #19. This is a cover of The Foreigner’s 1984 chart topping ballad I Want To Know What Love Is. This also comes off the back of an X-Factor performance and returns Mariah to the top 20 for the first time since Touch My Body became her 21st UK top 10 hit last year, this is her 29th UK top 20 hit since her debut way back in 1990 (Vision Of Love). This week’s chart misses! Mika’s new single Rain misses out this week, a little surprising given his previous success. Following 2 #1s David Guetta’s new single One Love has flopped, it features Estelle. Jamie T is another to follow up 2 top 30 singles with a flop as The Man’s Machine can’t work its way to success. La Roux’s Quicksand was finally released properly this week but appears to have gone into the quicksand! Susan Boyle tops the album chart To the surprise of nobody, BGT star Susan Boyle tops the album charts this week as her dreams really come true, with over 400k sales beating the opening sales of Leona Lewis Spirit. I Dreamed A Dream is the fastest selling album of the year and fully cements SuBo’s status as a true talent and a huge success. Lady Gaga has repackaged her album and added 8 brand new tracks under the name of The Fame Monster which is a new (or re) entry at #7 this week. Entering rather lower than perhaps expected is Rihanna’s 5th studio album Rated R in at #16 this week, expect a rise following her X-Factor performance. Also Britney, Mariah, Janet and Scooter experience relative flops position wise this week … sales are good though. The highly opinionated bit! I am of the same opinion of Peter Kay’s #1 this week as the X Factor one last week, happy to see Mr Kay get to #1 for a good cause and also a very good video but musically it is rubbish. I really like Rihanna’s Russian Roulette and think it deserves higher, may climb next week though. I am not a fan of Susan Boyle at all, however I think her cover of Wild Horses is very beautiful indeed. Same for Mariah’s cover of I Want To Know What Love Is, I’m not normally a fan of covers in general but I really like this one. I think the pairing of Lady Gaga and Beyonce works very well and Telephone is quite catchy but not the best song around … just OK. It’s a shame for Mika as his new song Rain is rather good, even if his second album is a bit patchy. I absolutely love La Roux and think it’s a shame that Quicksand bombed, mind you the album’s done good.

X Factor Finalists claim the new #1 single with You Are Not Alone No surprises to find that this week's brand new chart topper is this year's X-Factor Finalists. Last year, all 12 of the X-Factor Finalists got together to record a charity cover of Mariah Carey's Hero and subsequently topped the chart with very good sales. Now a year later, 2009's finalists have done the same with proceeds going to Great Ormond Street Hospital. This time it is Michael Jackson's #1 ballad hit You Are Not Alone that is covered with similar results. Jason Derulo - Whatcha Say enters at #3 US singer songwriter Jason DeRulo has been massive over the other side of the pond with his hit single Whatcha Say, now it becomes an instant top 3 hit as he debuts here in the UK. The song takes a sample from Hide & Seek by multi-talented UK singer songwriter Imogen Heap. Imogen has never had a top 40 hit in this country, despite releasing several critically acclaimed albums and singles over the years. Alesha Dixon - To Love Again enters at #15 Not much more action in the top 10, so on to the highest top 20 new entry of the week. A certain former Mis-Teeq singer and Strictly Come Dancing winner, now judge scores herself another top 20 hit. This is Alesha Dixon's 5th solo top 20 hit in total and continues the trend of alternating between ballads and uptempo single releases. She was last seen in the charts with #13 hit Let's Get Excited and her biggest hit remains Breathe Slow which hit #3, biggest Mis-Teeq was Scandalous which hit #2. Florence & The Machine - You've Got The Love climbs to #16 This week Florence Welsh and her machine get their second top 20 hit as the cover of The Source/Candi Staton's You've Got The Love climbs to #16 following physical release. This seems to have done well on physical format which is rather unusual in this day & age. Peter Kay's All Star Band - The Official BBC Children In Need Medley enters at #18 It is time now for this year's Children In Need single and subsequent entry to the singles chart. Comedian Peter Kay has of course been heavily involved in this event in the past, famously directing the video for Tony Christie's Amarillo and turning into a massive hit all over again. This year, Mr Kay has put together a video of popular animated characters and used a medley of 7 different songs (Can You Feel It, Don't Stop, Jai Ho, Tubthumping, Never Forget, Hay Jude and One Day Like This) with artwork resembling that of The Beatles Sgt Pepper. The result is a new entry at #18, however this is only on 2 day's worth of sales so #1 next week is a very strong possibility. 50 Cent feat Neyo - Baby By Me enters at #23 US rapper 50 Cent gets another hit this week, in collaboration with fellow US star NeYo as Baby By Me enters at #23. This is fiddy's 9th top 30 hit since his debut In Da Club hit #3 in 2002, his biggest hit still remains the 2007 #2 hit Ayo Technology with Justin Timerlake and Timbaland. Baby By Me is the first single to be taken from his album Before I Self Destruct which was also released this week. Shakira - Did It Again enters at #26 Look Shakira just Did It Again ... that is enter the top 40 with her forthcoming new single! Following her X-Factor performance of this track, she now follows the top 5 single She Wolf with another top 30 hit. This is her 9th UK top 40 hit, including her 2 chart topping collaborations Hips Don't Lie (with Wyclef) and Beautiful Liar (with Beyonce). Taken By Trees - Sweet Child O' Mine enters at #38 Female act Taken By Trees enter at #38 with a rather unique cover of the Guns & Roses classic Sweet Child O' Mine, following its use in a TV advert. Agnes - I Need You Now enters at #40 Swedish singer Agnes Carlson this week scores a 2nd top 40 hit, if only just. This of course follows up her massive top 5 hit Release Me but somewhat struggles to match that success, we will wait to see how her forthcoming album does. This week's non-hits! Little Boots new single rather surprisingly fails to make top 10, I guess she hasn't felt the Earthquake! James Morrison's new single is another flop as Get To You does not get to the top 40 this week. Welsh band Stereophonics used to be chart regulars, however once again they fail to make the top 40 with lead single Innocent. Lily Allen misses out for now with Who'd Have Known, despite a recent performance with Take That. Leona Lewis tops the album charts this week To the surprise of few, a certain Leona Lewis tops the albums listings with her second album Echo, echoing the success of Spirit. Legendary UK rock band Queen debut at #3 with another hits compilation entitled Absolute Greatest, Queen still have the biggest sales for a Greatest Hits album ever. Hip hop act N-Dubz enter at #6 with their second album Against All Odds, beating the #11 peak of their debut Uncle B. Will Young enters at #9 with his album of Hits, the only Pop Idol/X-Factor star to release a retrospective (bar Girls Aloud). There are a few established acts who enter slightly lower than expected - Stereophonics at #11 still keeping calm, Ronan at #16 with his Winter Songs, 50 Cent at #22 before he blows himself up and Norah Jones at #24 experiencing The Fall of her chart positions! Personal opinion of 007! I really did not like last year's Hero cover and I like this years MJ cover even less from the X-Factor lot, but it's all for a good cause so I'd say they deserve to be #1 this week. I don't like Jason DeRulo's song at all, however I do love the song it samples from Imogen Heap and think she deserves to have a hit or 2. Alesha's new song is OK but not a patch on Breathe Slow, same for Shakira's new one - good but not as good as She Wolf. I hate 50 Cent and wish he'd hurry up and self destruct to be honest, I find his music offensive and tuneless. However I absolutely love the new Stereophonics tune and am gutted that it didn't make top 40. I think Leona's album is brilliant and fully deserves it's #1 debut, so many different good tracks. I also love Robbie's new album and hope it can somehow manage to get to #1 in the future. Next week's potential hits Next week sees the full release of Peter Kay's Children In Need single which could well claim the #1. There are also major new releases from the likes of Susan Boyle, Rihanna, Mariah Carey and Lady Gaga. New albums are due from Susan Boyle, Rihanna, Mariah Carey and many more.

Thanks Bray ... for some reason I thought Puzzle made #12 until reading otherwise on here. Now corrected! ;-)

Black Eyed Peas – Meet Me Halfway climbs to #1 this week, beating Leona! Well I certainly didn’t see this coming, Black Eyed Peas beat Leona to #1 in one of the tightest singles chart battles for some time. At the beginning of the week, it looked like Meet Me Halfway was going to do just that within the top 3 by rising to #2. However with the gap getting less and less, now the hip hop group emerges victorious. This means that the peas are the first act to score 3 #1 singles in 2009; this is even more of an achievement when you consider that their album has already sold very well and spawned 2 previous #1 singles. The last act to score 3 #1s in one calendar year were Westlife in 1999. Leona Lewis – Happy enters at #2 Leona Lewis of course rose to fame after winning a certain TV singing contest and went on to have the obvious #1 A Moment Like This. Not so obviously, this was then outsold by the legendary Bleeding Love, then came #2 Better In Time, #5 Forgive Me and #1 cover of Snow Patrol’s Run - all from her debut album Spirit. The first single to be taken from her forthcoming second album Echo, Happy was expected to enter at #1 with ease after lots of promotion (including X-Factor itself). However in the end, she still gets a #2 new entry to maintain her “Run” of top 5 hit singles so I'm sure her and Simon will still be very “happy”. N-Dubz – I Need You enters at #5 Now for a hip-hop collective who aren’t Black Eyed Peas, N-Dubz score their own biggest hit to date this week by entering at #5 with new single I Need You. Previously the group has had 4 top 40 hits, the biggest being Strong Again which hit a #19 peak. N-Dubz have of course had a Number One alongside Tinchy Stryder which lived up to its name earlier on this year. The release of their second album Against All Odds is due next week … nothing to do with the Phil Collins / Westlife song I trust. Britney Spears – 3 enters at #7 Britney Spears gets this week’s second highest new entry, crashing straight in at #7 (and not #3) with new single named 3. This is a new track taken from her second hits compilation album, due for imminent release. It thus provides Ms Spears with her 20th top 10 hit since her 1998 debut Baby One More Time became the first of her 5 number ones. Every single she has released since has made the top 20, with the exception of Radar which missed the top 40 after its belated release in July 2009. Whilst it has not made top 5, it is a good result given that tracks from hits compilations don't tend to do that well. Sugababes – About A Girl enters at #8 And the prize for most amount of line-up changes by one group goes to the Sugababes! Now with none of their original line up left (there are rumours that they are to form another band), the three-some now score another top 10 hit with About A Girl. This follows up the #2 hit Get Sexy as the 2nd release from their appropriately named 7th studio album Sweet 7. It is now the girl group’s 17th top 10 hit in total and 4th #8 hit. This may also be a bit lower than some expected, however for a second single and the strong competition it is not too bad a position really. Robbie Williams – You Know Me enters at #17 Now for the big album track new entry of the week for Robbie Williams, just 4 weeks after Bodies entered at #2. Robbie has been promoting forthcoming new single You Know Me alongside his album, as a result the track enters the top 20 at #17. There is a strong possibility of this track climbing further in the coming weeks as it gains airplay etc. Pixie Lott – Cry Me Out enters at #25 Hot new female singer Pixie Lott has had a meteoric rise to fame this year with 2 #1 singles in the shape of Mama Do and Boys & Girls but quite a modestly selling debut album. Now she enters at #25 with forthcoming third single Cry Me Out, largely seen as a highlight from the aforementioned album Turn It Up. This is another track that is very likely to rise in the coming weeks, as the full release of the single is still a few weeks away. Chartjackers – I’ve Got Nothing enters at #36 The Chartjackers are a new boy band but with a slight difference, in that they have been exclusively crowd-sourced from YouTube. The new single was sewn together from fans wallposts on Facebook and the melody was conjured by an online competition. The result is top 40 hit I’ve Got Nothing, entering at #36 this week. This week’s almost but not quite hits Amongst the tracks missing out this week are the bizarrely named electro group Ou Est Le Swimming Pool with their Dance The Way I Feel. Indie group Athlete miss out again as they release their Black Swan Song. Ash are releasing a single every 2 weeks, none of which so far have found many buyers. 2 of the big names from a few years ago seem to be struggling now with their respective new singles - Joss Stone and Will Young. JLS pip Robbie to the post for the #1 album Another very tight chart battle has been ensuing all week between X-Factor created boy band JLS and a certain Robbie Williams. In the end JLS have only just made #1 this week with their debut self titled album, being sold with 5 different coloured covers would have helped. In a very close second place this week is Robbie Williams with his 8th studio album and first ever to miss number one (as yet) Reality Killed The Video Star, it still has the second highest first week sales by any album this year – about 238k. Snow Patrol’s greatest hits album Up To Now enters at #3 this week, featuring hits from their each of their 5 albums to date. Scottish band Biffy Clyro get a new entry in at #8 with their 5th studio album Only Revolutions, with 3 top 20 hits already from the album. Chart veteran Rod Stewart enters at #10 with his latest album of covers, entitled Soul Book. Hot new jazz/pop singer Jamie Cullum enters the top 20 with his 6th studio album release, 2003’s 20 Something remains his biggest making #3. Next week’s contenders Next week’s #1 single is more of a dead cert as X-Factor Finalists release their charity cover of MJ’s You Are Not alone. Jason Derulo, Alesha Dixon, James Morrison, Agnes and Little Boots are also expected to enter next week’s singles chart. New album releases are still plentiful, as Leona releases her second album Echo along side Ronan, Will Young, Norah Jones, Stereophonics, 50 Cent and more. Personal Opinion of Mr Bond! Whilst I actually quite like Black Eyed Peas, I’m not sure if Meet Me Halfway deserves to be #1 over Leona. I do also like Happy but I just don’t think it’s her best and having heard her album, I know there is much better on there. The jury’s still out on Britney’s 3, it is not her best but by no means her worst for me. Same for Sugababes, About A Girl is much better than the rubbish that was Get Sexy but I still feel that all their line up changes haven’t helped them much. I hate N-Dubz and frankly can’t get any tune out of this new one, their Tinchy Stryder collaboration Number One is Still far worse for me. I love Robbie’s new one You Know Me, whilst I really like Bodies I think this one is actually better. The album is fantastic and represents a return to form, and should never have been beaten by JLS with their multiple copies. I also love Pixie Lott’s new single Cry Me Out, it is her best song yet and I hope it helps the album a bit at least.

Thanks Bray Fish ... I haven't actually heard the song yet but will certainly take a listen as it is top 10.

JLS – Everybody In Love tops the UK chart continuing the X-Factor theme JLS of course shot to fame after coming second to Alexandra Burke in last year’s X-Factor. They have since had a #1 hit with Beat Again, which only this week drops of the top 40. That was of course following huge publicity, which they have also enjoyed this time as it seems everybody’s in love with JLS right now. The boys’ debut album is due out next week, in a battle with Robbie … I wonder who will get that then!!! Black Eyed Peas – Meet Me Halfway climbs to #3 Cheryl Cole’s fight is over as she drops to #2 after a fortnight on top. At #3 is Meet Me Halfway by Black Eyed Peas who continue their climb by going from halfway up the top 10 (#6) to halfway up the top 5 (#3), they could well be halfway up the top 3 next week (#2). I do love it when a song lives up to its title! Ke$ha – Tik Tok enters at #6 The US R&B singer with the bizarrely spelled name Ke$ha debuts at #x with her single Tik Tok, following a mid week release. This is the latest track to get an early release due to the presence of a fake cover version. Ke$ha has actually topped the charts this year already, alongside Flo Rida on his Dead Or Alive sampling Right Round. Chase & Status feat Plan B – End Credits enters at #9 There is a new dance/rap collaboration making a strong new entry this week, in the form of End Credits by Chase & Status feat Plan B. Chase & Status are a London based dance/electro production duo, who have never previously had a top 40 hit of their own. The duo have produced and remixed lots of tracks over the past few years, most recently Nneka’s top 20 hit Heartbeat. Plan B is a rapper who also hails from London and has never had a top 40 hit of his own before. The closest he got was in 2006 when Mama Loves A Crackhead fell 1 place short, now both acts can boast a top 10 hit. Lady Gaga – Bad Romance climbs to #10 Lady Gaga gets herself a 4th top 10 hit this week, as Bad Romance continues to slowly rise up the chart. This is bound to rise further in the coming weeks as the video has just been released and the extended version of her album is due out shortly too. Snow Patrol – Just Say Yes enters at #15 Now Snow Patrol return to the top 20 with their new single Just Say Yes, one of the new tracks on their forthcoming hits compilation Up To Now. The band first formed in 1998 and released 2 albums but did not have any top 40 success until 2004’s breakthrough hit Run, the first of 5 top 10 hits. The highest charting one was 2007’s Signal Fire taken from the Spider Man 3 soundtrack, making #4. However the best seller was 2006’s Chasing Cars which peaked at #6 but stayed in the top 100 for a full 2 years (with a short break due to chart rules). Just Say Yes is now their 11th top 40 hit in total … clearly people have been just saying yes when asked to purchase this. Paolo Nutini – Pencil Full Of Lead and Calvin Harris – Flash Back climb to #17 and #18 respectively Scottish singer songwriter Paolo Nutini gets his 2nd biggest hit to date as Pencil Full Of Lead gets a full release and this week rises to #17. This is surprising as it is the third single from his Sunny Side Up album and follows the flop of his last single Coming Up Easy. Another Scot with a third single from current album is Calvin Harris, whose Flash Backs continue as he rises to #18. Journey – Don’t Stop Believing enters at #19 US rock band Journey make the top 40 for the first time ever as Don’t Stop Believing benefits hugely from an X-Factor performance by one of the contestants. This was first released in 1983 and only peaked at #62 after 4 weeks in the top 75, it has since gone on to become very well known. It has been going up and down in the lower end of the top 200/top 100 for the best part of 2 years now. Now the track at least becomes the top 20 hit its status would indicate by debuting at #19 after 16 years. Bon Jovi – We Weren’t Born To Follow enters at #25 From one US rock band to another, chart veterans Bon Jovi make their return this week in at #25 with new single We Weren’t Born To Follow. It is the first track to be taken from their 11th studio album The Circle, also released this week. The band were formed in 1983 and hail from New Jersey but didn’t have their first top 40 success until 1986 when You Give Love A Bad Name made #14 then the legendard Living On A Prayer hit #4. The band have since had 28 UK top 20 singles but without a #1, the closest they came was with 1994’s Always which peaked at #2. This is their biggest hit since 2006, even if it misses the top 20 after an X-Factor performance. Beyonce – Broken Hearted Girl enters at #27 Beyonce finally enters the top 40 with the latest single to be released from her current album I Am Sasha Fierce. She will most certainly be a Broken Hearted Girl, as this is her very first full single release (including those with Destiny’s Child) to miss the top 20, not surprising as it is the 5th single from a very big selling album. This is following on from the #1 If I Were A Boy, and top 10 hits Single Ladies, Halo and Sweet Dreams. Chris Brown feat Lil Wayne & Swizz Beatz – I Can Transform Ya enters at #29 US R&B singer Chris Brown made is debut in 2005 with the #2 hit single Run It and had 2 further top 10 singles With You and Forever. After the controversy surrounding his attack on girlfriend Rihanna, he makes his return at a rather low #29. This is a collaboration with Lil Wayne and Swizz Beatz. Laura White – You Should Have Known enters at #32 Now for another X-Factor contestant debuting inside the top 40, this time with rather less promotion and airplay than usual. Laura White was a contestant in last year’s show and now debuts at #32 with You Should Have Known. Cheryl Cole – 3 Words stays at #1 in the albums chart In a very close battle, Cheryl Cole manages to hold on at #1 in the albums chart only by 285 copies apparently. All week, it looked like Bon Jovi’s 11th studio album would provide them with another #1, in the end The Circle is the band’s 8th consecutive top 2 album. Foo Fighters get a new entry at #4 with their Greatest Hits album. Welsh soprano Katherine Jenkins gets a new entry at #9 with her Ultimate Collection, released just a week after her studio album debuted at #6 last week. Chart veteran Sting gets a new entry at #15 with his appropriately title If On A Winter’s Night. Personal opinion JLS are quite good even if their new song sounds like their last, however I don’t think they quite deserve to be #1. I am pleasantly surprised by Ke$ha’s Tik Tok, I find it very catchy indeed and would have preferred it at #1 this week. I am a big fan of Snow Patrol but haven’t warmed to their new song much, it’s good but by no means their best. I have always been a huge fan of Bon Jovi and absolutely love their new single, even if it does sound like most of their previous output. I hate Chris Brown with a passion, same for this new “song” of his. Next week’s new releases Almost certain to be #1 is Happy by Leona Lewis, following an X-Factor performance. Black Eyed Peas, Kesha, Britney, Sugababes and N-Dubz are all likely to be big next week. The albums battle will be interesting with Robbie battling it out with JLS next week.

Cheryl Cole holds on at #1 with lots of competition! Following huge sales last week, Cheryl Cole continues to fight and as such stays at #1 for a second week with her single, X-Factor judging and album cherry picks both helping. Her album 3 Words also tops the albums listings this week so she is now the first act to do the double since Lady Gaga just over 6 months ago. Westlife – What About Now enters at #2 Now for the return of Irish boy-band turned man-band Westlife, who famously rose to fame in 1998 with their first 7 singles all going to #1, a record which has not yet been beaten. What About Now is a cover of the Daughtry song which has been used extensively in the X Factor and Britian’s Got talent, and also reenters at #39 this week. This is now Westlife’s 24th top 10 single with a total of 15 #1 hits to date and a 100% strike rate of top 10 hits, they must have done something right over the past 11 years. Jay Sean – Down enters at #3 Almost giving Westlife and Cheryl a run for their money is UK R&B singer Kamaljit Singh Jhooti, better known as Jay Sean, scoring his biggest hit to date as Down enters up (not down) at #3. His previous hits include Eyes On You, Stolen, Ride It and Tonight with Stolen being his biggest until now, peaking at #4 in 2004. Jay’s third album All Or Nothing is due for release next month and is sure to do well. Michael Buble – Haven't Met You Yet rises to #5 Michael Buble gets a new peak of #5 with his latest single Haven’t Met You Yet, following his appearance on the X-Factor. Strangely enough he did not perform this single, but opted for album track Cry Me A River instead, which enters at #34 this week. This is not a cover of Justin Timberlake’s song, it is the jazz/blues standard first recorded by Ella Fitzgerald and covered by numerous artists over the years. Rather more suited to Buble’s style. Black Eyed Peas –Meet Me Halfway rises to #6 Black Eyes Peas new single Meet Me Halfway now rises to meet the top 10 this week, joining I Gotta Feeling which incredibly spends its 17th week inside the top 10. They have now never missed the top 11 since their 2003 breakthrough Where Is The Love. Miley Cyrus – Party In The US enters at #11 This week Miley Cyrus can celebrate another #11 peak this week and have a party here as well! The Hannah Montanna star has peaked at #11 with debut hit See You Again and The Climb, and now Party In The USA. She has yet to score a UK top 10 hit so just a small scale party then! Lady Gaga – Bad Romance enters at #14 2009’s big breakthrough act Lady Gaga makes a return this week with new track Bad Romance. This is her 5th UK single release following #1s Just Dance and Poker Face, top 5 hit Paparazzi and top 20 hit Love Game. Bad Romance does not appear on the current version of The Fame album, so as a new single enters at #14. The album is due for a re-release with the addition of this track, entitled The Fame Monster. This tactic has been used many times before with 3rd or 4th singles from big albums, and is seen as a blatant cash-in by many, with people buying the same album again with 1 or 2 “new” tracks added. Biffy Clyro – The Captain enters at #17 Scottish group Biffy Clyro come sailing into the top 20 this week as they become The Captain! The band made #5 last year with Mountains and #10 back in August with That Golden Rule, and now #17 with The Captain. Another tactic being used recently is releasing both the 1st and the 2nd single before the parent album, thus helping to sell the singles and the album. This has been done here, with the new album Only Revolutions due out later this month. Duck Sauce – aNYway enters at #22 The prixe for the most bizarrely named act this week goes to Duck Sauce, a DJ collaboration between Armand Van Helden and A-Trak. Armand Van Held is a US producer and remixer who had a #1 in 1997 with his own track You Don’t Know Me and remixes of Tori Amos Professional Widow and most recently featured on Dizzee Rascal’s Bonkers. A-Trak on the other hand is rather less well known, a US DJ who has won numerous awards and apparently gave lessons on the art of scratching! The track title has capital letters to signify the band’s New York origins. Cheryl Cole feat Will.i.am – 3 Words enters at #26 The next artist to chart with an album track in the singles chart is Cheryl Cole. 3 Words is the title track of this week’s brand new #1 album and is a collaboration with Black Eyed Peas front man Will.i.am. Florence & The Machine – You’ve Got The Love enters at #37 Florence & The Machine are another of this year’s big album sellers with the appropriately named Lungs. The next single to be released from this is a cover of You’ve Got The Love, originally a hit for The Source feat Candi Staton. This version has been a UK top 10 hit on no less than 3 different occasions - in 1991, 1997 and 2006 respectively. This week’s near misses Missing out this week again is Beyonce with Broken Hearted Girl, due for full release tomorrow I can see her missing the top 20 for the first time. UK rapper and producer Sway misses out with his new track Mercedes Benz, as does fellow UK rapper Kano with Rock n Roller. Kasabian miss the top 40 with the release of Underdog, however it did chart at #32 as an album track earlier on this year. Ladyhawke’s Magic doesn’t seem to be paying off as she misses out yet again this week. Even with the presence of Anastacia on the new Ben’s Brother track, they are still in Stalemate as they miss out again. The new #1 album this week goes to Cheryl Cole Topping another busy album chart this week is Cheryl Cole, to the surprise of few. This is Mrs Cole’s 3rd #1 album in total, following Girls Aloud’s Sound Of compilation and last year’s Out Of Control. Michael Jackson gets another new entry in this week’s album chart, this time it is the soundtrack to the eagerly anticipated film This Is It. The Soldiers are a trio of serving British Army soldiers who enter at #5 with their charity album Coming Home. Welsh classical singer Katherine Jenkins enters in the top 10 with her 7th album entitled Believe, containing some more popular songs like Bring Me To Life and No Woman No Cry. Also Daniel O’Donnel charts with his 29th studio album this week, he has now had at least 1 album in the UK top 10 every year since 1997 (except 2001 and 2002). Personal opinion of this week’s hits! I am very happy to see Cheryl stay at#1 for a second week with the rather good Fight For This Love. I do admit to liking Flying Without Wings, My Love and Queen Of My Heart by Westlife but nothing since. What About Now does show a more mature side to them but has no other redeeming factors for me … they should just disappear now! I haven’t liked any of Jay Sean’s stuff in the past, Down is however OK but does not deserve a top 3 placing in my opinion. I almost liked the last Miley Cyrus single The Climb but Party In The USA is just cheesy rubbish to me and doesn’t deserve top 20 at all. On a more positive note, I think The Captain is easily Biffy Clyro’s best song to date and very catchy. I think I like Gaga’s new one Bad Romance, certainly better than that disco stick nonsense that is Love Game. Next week’s contenders Almost certain to take the #1 spot next week is Everybody In Love by JLS, especially after their X-Factor performance. New singles releases are also due from Bon Jovi, Beyonce, Chris Brown, Chase & Status, Snow Patrol, BEPs, Paolo and Calvin amongst others. We are due new albums from the likes of Bon Jovi, Sting, Foo Fighters, Weezer, Bryn Terfel and BeeGees.

Yeh a rubbish song in my opinion ... only redeeming thing it is was for charity.

Ah yes I forgot to count Walk This Way (with Sugababes) for some reason.

Cheryl Cole goes to #1 as Fight For This Love becomes the fastest seller of the year! Cheryl Cole is a member of an obscure girl group called Girls Aloud and is also a judge on some TV talent show apparently called The X-Factor! Last week it was the turn of Cheryl Cole to make a memorable performance her new single Fight For This Love on the aforementioned TV show. Following Alexandra Burke last week this has translated into huge sales, and the fastest seller of the year so far. Having bigger first week sales than any Girls Aloud song and outselling total sales of most in just 1 week, I think this can be considered a success. Fight For This Love tops the charts a full year after Girls Aloud reached the summit with The Promise and provides Mrs Cole with her 4th #1 single. Whitney Houston - Million Dollar Bill climbs to #5 The first 4 live acts to perform on X-Factor are all in this week’s top 5, as Alexandra drops to #2 (still selling well) and Robbie drops to #4. Whitney Houston performed Million Dollar Bill on the show last week whilst her dress almost came undone. As a result of this and her album release, the track rises to #5 after a 12-14 drop last week. Whitney also enters just outside the 40 with album track I Didn’t Know My Own Strength. Young Soul Rebels - I Got Soul enters at #10 There is a new entry at #10 this week from a War Child charity supergroup called Young Soul Rebels. The group consists of Pixie Lott, N-Dubz, Tinchy Stryder, Frankmusik, VV Brown, Chipmunk, MPHO, Ironik and the London Community Gospel Choir amongst others. The track is based around the tagline “I got soul, but I’m not a soldier” and melody from The Killers hit All These Things That I’ve Done, making #18 in 2005. Black Eyed Peas - Meet Me Halfway climbs to #11 The Black Eyed Peas once again rise quickly up the charts, this week Meet Me Halfway surges 26-11 and is showing signs of becoming another massive top 5 hit in the next few weeks. Cobra Starship - Good Girls Go Bad enters at #17 American punk-pop outfit Cobra Starship get a new entry this week at #17 as all the Good Girls Go Bad. Maybe they are referring to Rihanna as her last album was called Good Girl Gone Bad … there again probably not! After several US releases, this is the group’s first UK release and debuts at #11, featuring Gossip Girl actress Leighton Meester on backing vocals. Alphabeat - The Spell enters at #20 Danish pop act Alphabeat get another hit this week as they cast their spell on the top 20. The Spell is the first from their forthcoming second album. It seems that their spell hasn’t really worked as they enter rather at a rather lowly #20 this week. Debut hit Fascination remains their biggest, reaching #6 last year. Foo Fighters - Wheels enters at #22 Foo Fighters were originally formed in 1995 by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl who have since become hugely popular. They have had 6 studio albums to date and scored 4 top 10 hit singles, biggest being 2005’s #4 hit Best Of You. So now is the time for them to release a Greatest Hits album, Wheels is a new song from it. Whilst getting the band their 20th top 40 hit in at #22, it has somewhat underperformed as so often happens with new tracks from best of / hits compilations. Christina Auguilera - Hurt re-enters at #25 The X-Factor effect on older hits comes into play once more this week as Christina Aguilera’s ballad Hurt was performed on the show and now makes a return to the top 40 at #25. It originally made #11. Calvin Harris - Flash Back enters at #30 Dumfries born Calvin Harris this week scores a 6th top 40 hit this week as he experiences a Flash Back. This is the 3rd single release from his chart topping second album, following up #1 single I’m Not Alone and #3 single Ready For The Weekend. Whether this one will emulate that success remains to be seen. Paolo Nutini - Pencil Full Of Lead enters at #33 Scottish singer songwriter Paolo Nutini returns to the top 40 with a Pencil Full Of Lead, very different style almost bordering on jazz at times. This is his 6th top 40 hit out of 7 releases with only his last single Coming Up Easy missing the top 40, the biggest was his 2006 #5 debut where he made his Last Request. This week’s near misses Missing out this week once again is alternative band Miike Snow (yes the spelling is correct) with Black & Blue. Green Day released their latest single Eat Jesus Nowhere and are nowhere near the top 40 this week. The Twang’s new single is called Encouraging Sign, unfortunately proves not to be chart-wise. Alexandra Burke tops the album charts heading a mass of new entries Topping a very busy album chart this week is the aforementioned Alexandra Burke to the surprise of few, she is Overcome! Alex follows on from previous X-Factor winners Steve Brookstein, Shane Ward and Leona Lewis, whose respective debut albums also went to #1. In second place this week is the 4th successive top 10 album for Canadian singer Michael Buble, who has also been on a certain TV Talent show! Entering at #3 this week is the 6th studio album from Whitney Houston and her 5th to reach the top 5, she has also had several compilations and soundtracks (biggest being The Bodyguard OST). US “song and dance man” Seasick Steve enters at #4 as his new album Man From Another Time becomes his biggest yet. Entering at #7 is Once More, a new album featuring reworks of older hits from the reformed Spandau Ballet. Also entering the top 20 are hits compilations from Fleetwood Mac at a new peak of #6, and another from Alison Moyet in at #17 ... it is that time of year right enough! Personal opinionisation of Mr Bond! I am very happy to see Cheryl get her first solo #1 with Fight For This Love, when I first heard the song I was rather underwhelmed but now love it. I quite like Million Dollar Bill even if it is not a patch on most of Whitney’s past classics. Whilst I don’t normally like that sort of thing, I really like Good Girls Go Bad by Cobra Starship and think it should’ve gone top 10. I don’t care much for Alphabeat or the Foo Fighters, never liked either act and I don’t like their respective new songs. A very different style, I’m beginning to quite like Paolo’s new one Pencil Full Of Lead. I have listened to Alexandra’s album but think a lot of the songs are catchy but a bit samey, I am of the same opinion about Mr Hudson’s album too. Next week’s contenders Big new releases are due next week from Westlife (X-Factor performance), Jay Sean, Miley Cyrus and Biffy Clyro as well as the physical release of Pitbull’s track and several others. New albums are due from Cheryl Cole, Michael Jackson, Daniel O’Donnell and others next week.

Alexandra Burke feat Flo Rida – Bad Boys wins this week’s battle for #1 It’s funny how when there’s a big chart battle like this, there is quite often one clear winner. Alexandra Burke thus emerges as this week’s brand new number one, selling close to 200k in the process. Ms Burke is of course the winner of 2008’s X-Factor and had the inevitable Christmas #1 with her cover version of Hallelujah. Bad Boys is a completely different style to Hallelujah, instead opting to go down the hip-hop route, featuring US rapper Flo Rida. This means that Flo can join the list of artists to have 2 #1 singles this year, along with Alexandra herself (Hallelujah was actually released in 2008 but was still #1 at the start of 2009). Robbie Williams – Bodies enters at #2 So what of this week’s runner up then? Step forward Mr Robbie Williams with comeback single Bodies, a song which has divided many people’s opinions. Either way Bodies has sold more in its first week than most of this year’s #1 singles, thanks in no small way to his X-Factor performance. This is now Robbie’s 27th solo top 10 hit to date, with only 3 so far missing the top 10 and all 8 of his albums hitting #1 (excluding Live At Knebworth). He has of course topped the singles charts with Millenium, She’s The One, Rock DJ, Eternity, Something Stupid and Radio. His million selling single Angels only peaked at #4, proving that it is not always peak position that is important, overall sales sometimes tell the full story. Michael Buble – Haven’t Met You Yet enters at #9 Whilst Michael Buble has never really been a singles artist, he has had 3 previous top 40 entries with long chart runs but relatively low peaks – Home made #31 in 2005, Everything made #38 in 2007 and Lost eventually peaked at #19 in 2008. However this week, he scores his biggest hit single to date as he storms in at #9, much to the surprise of many. Like his aforementioned singles, this is an original song co-written by Buble himself and appears on his new album due out tomorrow. LostProphets – It’s Not The End Of The World enters at #16 Well folks it’s not the end of the world … but I can see it from here! Those are the claims from UK rockers Lost Prophets as they return to the UK top 40 this week at #16. This is the band’s 12th single release since their 2001 debut, their 2 biggest hits remain 2004’s #8 Last Train Home and 2006’s #8 Rooftops. This is the first to come from their forthcoming new album. Mr Hudson – White Lies enters at #20 The second Hudson in this week’s top 40, not related to Jennifer (as far as we know anyway). Mr Hudson returns this week for his follow up to the massive #2 hit Supernova with a rather smaller hit and not a word of a lie! His debut solo album Straight, No Chaser is due out tomorrow with both singles on. Editors – Papillon enters at #23 For a while it seemed like indie music was out of flavor, now it seems to be coming back a little bit. And so UK indie rock band Editors make their return with new single Papillon. This is the band’s 10th top 40 hit with only their 2005 debut Bullets missing out when originally released. By the way, a papillon is a breed of small dog apparently. Black Eyed Peas – Meet Me Halfway enters at #26 Hip hop mega-stars Black Eyed Peas aren’t meeting anyone halfway it seems as their new single becomes their 3rd top 40 hit of the year. This of course follows chart toppers Boom Boom Pow and I Gotta Feeling, the latter of which is still firmly in the top 10 for an incredible 14th week. Big Pink – Dominos enters at #29 Electro-pop duo The Big Pink finally make the top 40 as the domino effect comes into play this week. This is the band’s 4th single to be released from their debut album; following Too Young To Love, Velvet and Stop The World (none of which charted). Jennifer Hudson – And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going enters at #32 Actress and singer Jennifer Hudson today gets her 3rd top 40 hit, thanks to a contestant performing the track on X-Factor. The song dates back to 1983 when it was first used in the Broadway production of Dream Girls, as performed by Jennifer Holliday reaching a lowly #32. Donna Giles charted at #27 with a club version of the song in 1994. However, neither of these versions are legally available, hence J-Hud’s version from the Dream Girls film enters the top 40 at #32. Medina – You & I enters at #39 Danish singer Medina gets her debut top 40 hit this week with You & I in at #39. Incidentally Medina is also the name of several cities in the world - Saudi Arabia, Australia, Dominican Republic, Ghana and Hungary. I wonder which she took her name from then? This week’s almost hits! Paolo Nutini may have a Pencil Full Of Lead but misses out for now, there’s still time to refill that pencil. Also missing out this week is Dangerous by Cascada, rather surprising as follows up a massive #1 single. Gracious K also miss out with Migaine Skank, it obviously set off enough migraines to prevent people buying it! Ash also flop yet again with their new single True Love 1980, as does the delayed release of Silly Boy by Eva Simons. Editors top this week’s album charts In a rather unusual move, the Editors released both their single and their album this week. It seems to have paid off on the albums front as their 3rd album enters straight in at the top In This Light & On This Evening. Just behind at #2 is Chipmunk's second album where he declares I Am Chipmunk. Entering at #4 this week is the new album from Shakira called She Wolf, off the back of the hit single with the same name. Also making a big entry this week at is UK hip hop star Taio Cruz with his Rokkstar album, sppelling not his strong point then! The second album from the Saturdays enters at #9, promptly following up last year’s debut Chasing Lights which also reached #9. Next week’s hot new releases Strongest contender for #1 next week has to be Fight For This Love by Cheryl Cole, with Cobra Starship, Alphabeat and charity collective Young Soul Rebels also in for a chance. New ones are also due from the likes of Miike Snow, Raygun, Foo Fighters and Green Day. Albums are due from Alexandra Burke (if that’s not #1 I will eat my hat), Michael Buble, Mr Hudson, Whitney, Seasick Steve and many more. And now for the opinionated bit! Whilst I quite like Bad Boys, I can’t help but think it is just generic R&B and feel that Ms Burke could do better … we’ll see when I get her album. I would much rather have seen Robbie get another #1, much as I don’t like him as a person, I really like Bodies as it is a bit different but still maintains the classic Robbie sound. Whilst I am not a fan of Michael Buble I actually rather like his new one, even if it does sound like a male version of Love Song. I don’t like Lost Prophets much, their new song hasn’t changed my mind any. I do rather like the new Mr Hudson song as it is a bit different, same can be said for Big Pink’s Dominos … 2 of my fav songs at the moment. Editors are ok I guess, just good that they prevented Chipmunk from getting a #1 album!
