007 Chart Commentary - 2nd Dec 2012
Olly Murs - Troublemaker stays at #1 Following in the footsteps of Robbie Williams' Candy, Olly Murs stays at the top with his trouble making antics! Like Robbie before him, Olly has done the double this week with his album Right Place Right Time also topping the charts. This is the 32nd different number one single this year alone with just 4 weeks to go, compared to 35 different number one albums. Below Olly is a reclimb from Bruno Mars to #2, after his performance of Locked Out Of Heaven on last week's X Factor. Same reason for Rihanna's rebound to #3 this week with Diamonds, after a run of 1-4-4-8-8-9-10. Ke$ha - Die Young enters at #10 25 year old US singer songwriter and rapper Kesha Rose Sebert gets a 3rd UK top 10 single this week as Die Young enters at #10. Ke$ha made her first UK chart appearence as featured vocalist on Flo Rida's 2009 #1 hit Right Round. However she made her solo debut in 2009 with the #4 peaking hit Tik Tok, selling very well in the process. The following year, Ke$ha followed that with 3 further top 15 hits - Blah Blah Blah, Your Love Is My Drug and Take It Off. In 2010, she also scored 2 further top 10 hits as featured artist - #6 Dirty Picture by Taio Cruz and #7 My First Kiss by 3 Oh 3. Last year was her first #1 single We R Who We R , followed by #32 peaking Blow. All of these singles come from her debut album Animal, now the lead single to her new album (due out next week) Warrior debuts at #10 - Die Young. Taylor Swift - I Knew You Were Trouble re-enters at #24 22 year old US pop / country singer songwriter Taylor Alison Swift is back in the top 30 with her new single I Knew You Were Trouble. Taylor Swift debuted in 2009 with huge #2 hit Love Story, which remains her biggest UK seller to date. Despite 5 further top 10 hits and good sales in her native USA, Taylor only managed another 2 #30 hits in the UK until this year. However that changed when We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together peaked at #4 in the UK and became her first US #1 single. There were 4 further promotional singles which all made top 40, with the highest being I Knew You Were Trouble. Said track is confirmed as being the next single and hence its re-entry a place below its original peak just 7 weeks ago, likely to climb further in the coming weeks. Pogues feat Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York re-enters at # 27, Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You re-enters at #30 You know Christmas really is just around the corner when 2 perenial faviourites make their reappearence in the UK top 40 - Fairytale Of New York and All I Want For Christmas Is You by The Pogues/Kirsty MacColl and Mariah Carey respectively. This is now the 6th year in a row where these 2 tracks have been back in the top 40, ever since downloads have been included. Mariah's track originally made #2 in 1994, behind East 17's Stay Another Day. It made #4 in 2007, #12 in 2008, #18 in 2009, #22 in 2010, and #11 last year. The Pogues' track also originally made #2 but in 1987, behind Pet Shop Boys' version of Always On My Mind. This is now the 8th year in a row for Fairytale Of New York's chart appearence - #3 in 2005 ,#6 in 2006, #4 in 2007, #12 in 2008 and 2009, #17 in 2011, and #13 last year. Imagine Dragons - Radioactive enters at #35, and Hear Me enters at #37 US indie rock band Imagine Dragons get their first and second top 40 hits similtaneously this week as both Radioactive and Hear Me enter at #35 and #37 respectively. Both tracks are taken from the band's EP release, however Hear Me is the first track so the new entry at #37 accounts mainly for the EP downloads and the #35 entry accounts for donwloads of the individual track Radioactive. This happened just 3 weeks ago with Ben Howard, the Burgh Island EP charted at #32 however no individual tracks sold enough to make the top 100 in that case. The Script - Six Degrees Of Seperation enters at #38 Irish band The Script follow up their chart topping single Hall Of Fame with a #38 entry for Six Degrees Of Seperation, both tracks are on their #3 album, back up to #19 this week. This is now the band's 6th top 40 hit since their debut in 2008 with #15 hit We Cry followed by huge #2 hit The Man Who Can't Be Moved. Earlier this year they scored their first #1 alongside Will.i.am with Hall Of Fame, that track goes back up to #19 this week. Last year Danny from the band was featured on the Voice UK talent show, which no doubt raised their profile somewhat. Olly Murs - Right Place Right Time is the new #1 album As mentioned earlier, Olly Murs does the double this week as his single Troublemaker holds on and album Right Place Right Time folllows his last album to enter straight in at #1. One Direction stay at #2 and Rihanna falls from #1 to #3 with Michael Buble and Rod Stewart's Christmas albums both rising a place to make up the top 5. 2 best of compilation albums enter the top 10, Neil Diamond's Very Best Of at #8 and Girls Aloud's Ten at 10 minus 1 - #9! Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds sountrack, Alicia Keys' Girl On Fire and Il Divo's Greatest Hits also debut inside the top 20 this week, with McFly's 2nd hits collection coming in at #21. Opinion I am happy to see Olly Murs achieve the double and also get a second week at #1 with his single, both single and album are excellent. Bruno Mars and Rihanna also get my seal of approval, as do Lab/Emeli and Alicia Keys. That makes a brilliant top 5, so just lucky that Ke$ha's dirge didn't make it then. I am no Taylor Swift fan but I like her new single and We Are Never Ever as well. Imagine Dragons sound quite good, I do prefer Radioactive out of the 2 though. It is always good to see The Pogues return each year, Mariah's track is a little overrated but still good to hear. Very happy The Script have made it with Six Degrees Of Seperation, their 3 albums are all brilliant in my opinion.

007 Chart Commentary - 25th Nov 2012
Olly Murs - Troublemaker is this weeks new #1 Not such a closely run battle for number one this week, as there was one clear winner from the start. Oliver Stanley Murs gets his 4th UK #1 single and his biggest weekly sale for a single as Troublemaker debuts atop this week. Of course, Olly first came to prominence in 2009's X Factor and finished second to Joe McElderry. In August 2010, he released his debut single Please Don't Let Me Go which was an instant chart topper. This was followed #4 peaking single Thinking Of You, and his debut self titled album which sold over 100k copies in its first week. 2 further singles from the album followed in 2011 - Heart On My Sleeve (#20) and Busy (#45). Heart Skips A Beat was the lead single from his second album In Case You Didn't Know, followed by Dance With Me Tonight. Both singles and the album were huge selling number ones, next single Oh My Goodness peaked at #13. Now he leads off his 3rd album Right Place, Right Time with Troublemaker, which also features a guest rap from Flo Rida. Girls Aloud - Something New enters at #2 Something New can be found at #2 this week, the title of the new Girls Aloud single. Girls Aloud first came to prominence by winning Pop Stars : The Rivals in 2002 and shooting to #1 with the million selling Sound Of The Underground. In the last 10 years, Cheryl Cole, Nadine Coyle, Sarah Hardins, Nicola Roberts and Kimerley Walsh have enjoyed 20 consecutive top 10 singles, making them the most successful reality TV group in the UK. Their singles include No Good Advice, Jump (For My Love), Love Machine, Biology and Sexy No No No. They have amassed 4 #1s Sound Of The Underground, I'll Stand By You, Walk This Way (with the Sugababes) and The Promise. After a 3 year hiatus (and Cheryl Cole's solo work), the group are reunited and hit #2 with Something New from their new compilation album Ten due out next week. Alicia Keys - Girl On Fire enters at #5 Another previously successful act to be making their chart comeback this week is 31 year old US singer songwriter Alicia Keys, as Girl On Fire debuts at #5. Alicia made her UK chart debut in 2001 with #3 hit single Fallin', taken from her hugely successful debut album Songs In A Minor. This was followed by 3 further top 30 singles A Woman's Worth, How Come You Don't Call Me and Girlfriend. In 2003/4, You Don't Know My Name and If I Ain't Got You were top 20 hits from The Diary Of Alicia Keys album. 2007 saw her 2nd top 10 hit (aside from 2004's My Boo alongside Usher) in the form of #6 hit No One from third album As I Am. However 2009/10 saw her most successful era yet with #8 single Doesn't Mean Anything, huge #4 hit Empire State Of Mind Part II Broken Down (reworking of her #2 feature with Jay Z) and #7 hit Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart. These 3 singles came from her biggest selling album to date The Element Of Freedom. Now she is back with the title track to her fifth album Girl On Fire, after time off to have her baby. Girl On Fire is now Alicia's 8th top 10 hit in total in the UK. Rudimental feat John Newman and Alex Clare - Not Giving In enters at #14 London based quartet Rudimental get their second chart hit this week as Not Giving In debuts at #14 for Piers Agget, Kesi Dryden, Amir Amor and DJ Locksmith. After releasing several independent singles, the group came to prominence in May this year when Feel The Love shot straight to #1 with very good sales also. Rudimental have since remixed singles for Ed Sheeran (Drunk), Labrinth (Express Yourself) and Wretch 32 (Hush Little Baby). Now they release their second major single Not Giving In, which features John Newman and Alex Clare. The former was also featured on the aforementioned Feel The Love whilst the latter has had a huge top 5 hit with Too Close this year. Rudimental's debut self titled album is due for release in March 2013. AC/DC - Back In Black enters at #27, Highway To Hell re-enters at #40 Australian hard rock band AC/DC get 2 new entries this week, following this week's release of their back catalogue digitally for the first time. The band first formed in 1973 and have sold over 200 million albums worldwide with Back In Black having sold 50 million, and is the second biggest selling album of all time. Over the years, the band have had numerous tracks that are regarded as classics but have never had a top 10 single in the UK. The closest they came was in 1988 when Heatseeker made #12, one of 7 top 20 singles. Back In Black enters the top 40 for the very first time at #27 and Highway To Hell re-enters at #40. Rihanna is unapologetic with the #1 album Barbadan singer Rihanna claims her 4th UK #1 album this week as her 7th release in 7 years Unapologetic debuts at #1, featuring #1 single Diamonds and Right Now (#36 entry this week). She enters ahead of last week's #1 from One Direction and Little Mix's debut album DNA at #3, featuring singles Cannonball, Wings and DNA. Rockers Led Zeppelin debut at #4 with live album Celebration Day, from their 2007 concert film of the same name. Michael Buble re-enters with his million selling Christmas album at #5, repackaged for 2012 with new tracks added. Susan Boyle follows up her first 3 #1 albums with a #7 entry for Standing Ovation : Greatest Songs From The Stage ... exactly what the album is! Example enters at #13 with his 4th album The Evolution Of Man, featuring #2 hit Say Nothing and #37 follow up Close Enemies. Another Whitney Houston compilation album I Will Always Love You : Very Best Of debuts at '29 this week. Opinion I am very happy to see Olly Murs get his 4th #1 hit, I love all he has done so far and think Troublemaker is right up there with his best. I am so glad Girls Aloud didn't make it as I think Something New is utter rubbish, they have done some very good songs in the past but I'm afraid I don't rate this tripe at all. I am a huge fan of Alicia Keys and loved her last album, Girl On Fire is not quite in that league but is still excellent to me. Not a fan of Rudimental much, not that keen on Feel The Love or this new one really. I've never been a fan of AC/DC but can see how Back In Black and Highway To Hell are classics so good to see them back in the charts again I guess.

007 Chart Commentary - 18th Nov 2012
One Direction - Little Things enters at #1 This week has seen one of the closest battles for #1 in the singles chart this year, as we have an all new top 3, led by One Direction. The X Factor born boy band One Direction score their second UK chart topper, despite releasing the single on Monday instead of Sunday. The group first exploded onto the scene with their massive debut What Makes You Beautiful, hitting #1 last year after big pre-orders. They then scored a huge #2 peaking album Up All Night, which like the single can still be found in the chart one year on (single top 75 and album just outside top 20). Second single hit #3 Gotta Be You, then they hit #9 with One Thing. Just 7 weeks ago the boys debuted at #3 with Live While We're Young, beaten by Rihanna's Diamonds and PSY's Gangnam Style. No such problems this week, as they top both the singles and albums chart like Robbie Williams did last week (he falls to #6 with his single and #5 with his album). Bruno Mars - Locked Out Of Heaven enters at #2 Leading the pack for all of the week up to and including Friday, Bruno Mars finds himself locked out of another #1 this week. After providing vocals on Travie McCoy's Billionaire and BoB's #1 Nothing On You, Bruno Mars shot to #1 with his debut single Just The Way You Are in 2010 which went on to sell over a million. This was followed by 2 further big selling chart toppers Grenade and The Lazy Song, as well as a huge selling album Doo Wops & Hooligans. 3 further top 20 hits followed #11 Marry You, #19 Runaway Baby and #14 It Will Rain. Now as the lead single to his forthcoming Unorthodox Jukebox album, Locked Out Of Heaven debuts at #2. Little Mix - DNA enters at #3 Completing the top 3 new entries this week are the X Factor winners from last year Little Mix, as they score their third top 3 hit with DNA in at #3. Little Mix debuted at #1 with their winner's single Cannonball, a cover of the Damien Rice track. The girls then hit #1 12 weeks ago with their second single Wings, which dropped out of the top 40 last week but climbs 41-39 this week. The girls' debut album also entitled DNA is released next week, after peforming Change Your Life on Children In Need at the weekend. Gabrielle Aplin - The Power Of Love climbs to #5 This week's highest climber comes from 20 year old singer songwriter Gabrielle Aplin whose cover of The Power Of Love leaps up 31 places to #5. The track is features in the festive John Lewis TV advertisement and is a cover of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's 1984 #1 hit. Gabrielle Aplin first gained an online following with accoustic covers of songs by Paramore, You Me At Six and other rock acts. She then released 3 EPs, one of which was featured as iTunes single of the week - Home. She is now signed to a major record label, with an album and second major label single to follow. McFly - Love Is Easy enters at #10 Another popular boy band to debut inside the top 10 this week is McFly with their 18th top 10 hit out of 20 releases since their 2004 debut, Love Is Easy comes in at #10. The band debuted at #1 with their first 2 singles 5 Colours In Her Hair and Obviously, followed by 2 further top 5 hits from their debut album. Album #2 Wonderland gave them 2 more #1s All About You and I'll Be OK, followed by 2 top 10 hits. Album #3 also opened with 2 #1s Don't Stop Me Now and Star Girl followed by a #3. However a 7th #1 followed in the form Baby's Coming Back / Transylvania, which made the biggest drop from #1 ever to #20 the following week. Their Greatest hits gave them a #3 hit The Heart Never Lies then Radio:Active was the first album not to spawn a #1 for the band, #2 One For The Radio was the closest, followed by #4 Lies and their first non-top 10 hit #16 Do Ya / Stay With Me. Next album got them a #6 hit Party Girl and #4 Shine A Light, which actually sold very well, but was followed by #35 flop That's The Truth. Love Is Easy finds them back in the top 10 ahead of second hits compilation Memory Lane, due next week. Ed Sheeran - Give Me Love enters at #18 UK singer songwriter Ed Sheeran makes a return to the top 20 this week as his 6th single release debuts at #18, after a performance on the X Factor last week. Ed debuted last year with huge #3 hit The A Team, followed by the more modest selling #4 hit You Need Me, I Don't Need You. His third single Lego House made #5 but sold rather better in the long run, followed by #9 hit Drunk. Small Bump could only make #25, however by then his debut album + had sold over a million copies. This year, Ed has featured on Wretch 32's Hush Little Baby and Devlin's top 10 hit Watchtower. Give Me Love is in at #18 this week, also having written Little Things by One Direction which was also performed on said show. Stooshe - Waterfalls enters at #21 Just as 2 UK boy bands have new entries this week so also do 2 UK girl groups, Stooshe debut at #21 with third single release Waterfalls. This is a cover of a track made famous by another UK girl group TLC, they made #3 in 1995 and it remains the group's best seller to date. Stooshe debuted at #5 earlier this year with Love Me and followed it up with huge selling #3 hit Black Heart, so #21 could be seen as a bit of a comedown. Thee girls' debut album was due for release this year but has now aprently been moved to earlier next year. Lana Del Rey - Ride enters at #32 26 year old American singer songwriter Elizabeth Woolridge Grant gets herself a 4th top 40 hit under the better known name of Lana Del Rey, Ride enters at #32. After releasing several EPs, Lana first came on the scene around a year ago with debut #9 hit single Video Games. Massive #1 debut album Born To Die and #9 title track followed earlier this year. Then she made #32 with Blue Jeans but flopped with National Anthem, however the album had sold in excess of 500k by that time. Said album has been rereleased this week with 8 new tracks, including new single Ride and forthcoming single Cola. Example - Close Enemies enters at #37 30 year old UK singer, rapper and producer Elliot John Gleave gets a new entry this week at #37 with new single Close Enemies under the name of Example. After releasing several independent singles, Example first hit it big in 2010 with album Won't Go Quietly. That album spawned #19 hit Watch The Sun Come Up, #6 Won't Go Quietly and #3 smash Kickstars. Then his first #1 came with Changed The way You Kissed Me last year, followed by second #1 Stay Awake and a few further minor hits. Earlier this year, he hit #2 with Say Nothing but can only make #37 with Close Enemies, from his new album The Evolution Of Man out next week. One Direction - Take Me Home is the #1 album As mentioned previously, One Direction do the double this week to follow up their #2 debut album Up All Night. As with the singles chart, we have an all new top 3 albums chart this week with Rod Stewart's Merry Christmas Baby in at #2. #3 is another veteran act, the new hits compilation from the Rolling Stones entitled Grrr! Andre Rieu drops to #4, ahead of last weeks #1 from Robbie and a #6 new entry from Alfie Boe with Story Teller. Lana Del Rey's Born To Die is back at #8, after adding an 8 track Paradise EP onto the album. Rockers Green Day have their second album of the year in at #10 this week entitled !Dos!. Other lower new entries come from Steps, Sound Garden, Deftones and The Wkend. Opinion I am happy to see 1D get a second #1, I think Little Things is a great song and good to hear something a bit different from them. I love Bruno Mars, Locked Out Of Heaven is very good but not quite as good as anything from his brilliant debut album. Little Mix DNA is quite good but I don't like it as much as Wings or the song they did on CIN (Change Your Life). Gabrielle Aplin's cover of The Power Of Love is lovely. I am no fan of McFly at all, only ones I've really liked are All About You and Shine A Light, mind you I do rather like Love Is Easy. I liked Ed Sheeran at the beginning but I've gone off him a bit lately, mind you Give Me Love is quite good. Not overly keen on Shooshe's cover of the brilliant Waterfalls by TLC, it's ok but nothing special I guess. I'm a big fan of Lana Del Rey and really like Ride, not overly keen on Example's flop Close Enemies though. Just hope Olly can beat that awful new Girls Aloud song next week.

I'd agree on the Bruno track it does sound very 80s, that's probably why I like it so much.

007 Chart Commentary - 11th Nov 2012
Robbie Williams - Candy stays at #1 This week truly does belong to Robbie Williams as his single Candy stays at number one for a second week ... yes a number one lasting for longer than a single week. Robbie also scores a 8th #1 studio album, meaning he is the first artist to be at #1 on both singles and albums charts since Gary Barlow & The Commonwealth Band in May this year. Not only is this Robbie Williams' first #1 in almost 8 years, it is his first to stay for more than a week at #1 since his 2001 dueat with Nicole Kidman Something Stupid. This now also means that Robbie has had more #1s that his bandmate Gary Barlow, who has had 3 outside of Take That and 3 when Robbie was not part of the group. Labrinth stays at #2 this week with his collaboration with Emeli Sande, Beneath Your Beautiful. The Wanted - I Found You enters at #3 UK boy band The Wanted score their 7th top 3 hit out of 9 single releases, as I Found You finds its way to #3 as the week's highest new entry. The band first formed in 2009 and released their debut single All Time Low in July 2010, when it debuted at #1. #2 hit Heart Vacancy followed, then they made #19 with 3rd single Lose My Mind. Next was a #3 hit with the 2011 Comic Relief single Gold Forever, taken from their second album Battleground. Glad You Came was the actual lead single, I'm sure they were glad as that hit #1. Then they played with Lightning to hit #2 but their Battleground could only get them to #21. Earlier this year, the band hit #2 with Chasing The Sun and now they have found a #3 hit, taken from forthcoming album Third Strike. Misha B - Do You Think Of Me enters at #9 20 year old British singer songwriter Misha Bryan makes the top 10 for the first time, as second single Do You Think Of Me enters at #9. As Misha B, she first found fame as a conestant in last year's X Factor. Since then she has been recording tracks for her album, including #11 debut hit Home Run, as well as supporting Nicki Minaj on her current tour. This now means that all of last year's top 4 X Factor conestants have at least 1 top 10 hit to their name, 8th placed Frankie Cocoza released his debut single this week but has flopped. Rita Ora - Shine Ya Light enters at #10 22 year old Rita Sahatcua Ora follows up her 3 #1 hit singles this year with a #10 entry for Shine Ya Light this week, following her X Factor performance. Earlier this year, Rita hit the top spot with her debut single RIP, featuring rapper Tinie Tempah. Then she was featured vocalist on Hot Right Now by DJ Fresh, which also hit #1 as well as her own single How We Do (Party). Debut album ORA, which also hit #1 2 weeks after How We Do, contains all 4 singles and is back up to #16 this week. Sub Focus feat Alpines - Tidal Wave enters at #12 English record producer Nick Douwma gets a new entry this week under his stage name of Sub Focus, as Tidal Wave sweeps its way into #12, giving him his biggest hit to date. Sub Focus has been releasing singles since 2003, but didn't make the top 100 until 2008 with X-Ray / Scarecrow, and making the top 40 with #38 hit Rock It / Follow The Light in 2009, followed by 2 #41 hits Could This Be Real / Triple X and Splash (featuring Coco). This year he scored a #23 hit with the Alice Gold featuring Out Of The Blue, now he features South London duo Alpines on this #12 entry Tidal Wave. Christina Aguilera - Your Body enters at #16 US pop star Christina Aguilera gets her 18th UK top 20 hit this week (22ndounting features) as Your Body enters at #16. Christina first came on the scene in 1999 with her massive #1 single Genie In A Bottle, followed by #3 hit What A Girl Wants and #19 I Turn To You then #8 Come On Over. Duet with Latino pop sensation Ricky Martin Nobody Wants To Be Lonely got to #4. Then she scored 3 chart toppers in a row - with the Moulin Rouge cover of Lady Marmalade, Dirrty and Beautiful. These were followed by a further 5 top 10 hits including Fighter and Ain't No Other Man, then 3 further top 20s - Hurt (#11), Candyman (#17) and Keeps Getting Better (#14). After a 2 year break, in 2010 she made #12 with Not Myself Tonight but further singles from the Bionic album flopped. Last seen as a featured vocalist on Maroon 5's million selling Moves Like Jagger, Christina is back at #16 with Your Body. 5th studio album Lotus is due out this week ... a 3rd #1? Willy Moon - Yeah Yeah enters at #34 New Zealand singer and producer Willy Moon gets his UK top 40 debut this week at #34 with his debut top 40 single entitled Yeah Yeah. In 2010, Willy made his first track I Wanna Be Your Man available on YouTube and has since gathered a decent online following. He has since released the singles She Loves Me and Railroad Tracks, which did not chart. The track Yeah Yeah is featured in the current Apple iPod TV advert, has been playlisted by Radio 1 and has been reduced to 59p in iTunes. Robbie Williams takes the album crown As previously mentioned, Robbie Williams does the double this week as his 9th studio album goes stright to the top, only his last Reality Killed The Video Star missed #1 (it made #2). Dutch violinist and composer Andre Rieu with the John Strauss Orchestra enter at #2 with Magic At The Movies. This is ahead of JLS with their 4th album Evolution which evolves into a #3 entry, following up 2 #1 albums (one of which beat Robbie Williams) and a #2. Military Wives have a second top 5 album Stronger Together, which debuts at #5, following up the chart topping In My Dreams from earlier this year. Italian tennor singer Andrea Bocelli gets another top 10 album with the very self descriptive Opera. Former Radio 1 presenter Chris Moyles finds his "difficult second album" in at #13, actually an improvement on his first album which made #17! Other new entries this week come from rock band Aerosmith, Neyo and Kristina Train. Opinion I am happy to see Robbie get a second week at #1, not liking off these one week number ones we've been getting for the last few years. I love The Wanted's I Found You, even with the falsetto vocals and its likeness to Glad You Came. Love Misha B's second single, much better than the rubbish Home Run that's for sure. Rita Ora's new one is pretty good, way better than her last How We Do. Sub Focus is ok but nothing special, Christina's new one is ok but she's capable of far far better - Fighter and Beautiful for starters. I quite like the Willy Moon track and the Gabrielle Aplin cover, dont' like Sneakbo's one at all though. Glad to finally see Pink make the top 40 with Try, it deserves much much better.

007 Chart Commentary - 4th Movember 2012
Robbie Williams - Candy enters at #1 Robbie Williams gets his seventh solo #1 this week as new single Candy enters at the top, with sales well over 100k in the process. Mr Williams of course first found fame as a member of Take That, before embarking on his massively successful solo career. He has gone on to become the biggest selling British solo artist in the UK, with no less than 6 of his album in the top 100 best sellers of all time. Singles wise, he hit #2 with his debut solo single which was a cover of George Michael's Freedom. This was followed by 3 modestly performing singles (Old Before I Die #2, Lazy Days #8 and South Of The Border #14) before the iconic Angels, which peaked at #4 but sold well over a million and effectively resurrected his solo career. #3 hit Let Me Entertain You followed, then his first solo #1 Millennium. This was followed by a string of top 10 hits including No Regrets, Come Undone and #1s She's The One, Rock DJ, Eternity, Something Studid and Radio. Last seen in the charts alongside Gary Barlow on #2 hit Shame, Robbie has now notched up a total of 29 top 10 hits out of 33 UK releases. Candy is from his new album Take The Crown due out next week. The boy's done OK I guess! Wiley feat Skepta, JME & Ms D - Can You Hear Me (Ayayaya) enters at #3 Entering just a place below last week's #1 from Labrinth and Emeli is East London rapper Richard Kylea Cowie under the name of Wiley with Can You Hear Me. Wiley first came to prominence as a grime artist, having released several singles before becoming mainstream. In 2008 he hit #2 with the massive single Wearing My Rolex, followed by 2 further top 20 hits Wot Do U Call It and Take That (no nothing to do with the aforementioned Robbie Williams). In 2010 he scored a #8 hit with Never Be Your Woman, featuring a certain Emeli Sande on vocals. This year though, he scored his first #1 with Heatwave which features vocals from Ms D. New track Can You Hear Me also features Ms D as well as fellow grime artists Skepta and JME. Fun - We Are Young reenters at #13 and Some Nights climbs to #22 US band "fun." performed their already huge hit We Are Young on last week's X Factor, as a result the former #1 track reenters the top 40 this week at #13. Meanwhile the followup track Some Nights also benefits hugely by climbing from #38 to #23 and the new single Carry On enters the top 200. The band's second album Some Nights hits a new peak of #4 this week as a result too. The aforementioned Robbie Williams was the other guest performer on last week's X Factor, so expect Rita Ora and possibly No Doubt to experience similar rises in sales next week. Calvin Harris feat Tinie Tempah - Drinking From The Bottle enters at #25 Dumfries born dance producer and singer Calvin Harris adds another top 40 hit to his name this week, as album track Drinking From The Bottle enters at #25. This is the forthcoming 6th single to be taken from his #1 album 18 Months, following on from Bounce, Feel So Close, Let's Go, We'll Be Coming Back and Sweet Nothing. Drinking From The Bottle features rapper Tinie Tempah and is his 15th top 40 appearence since his 2010 debut Pass Out. It is also the 15th chart appearence of Calvin Harris, not including his remixing credit of Florence & The Machine's recent #1 Spectrum. Asaf Avidan & The Mojos - One Day / Reckoning Song enters at #3 Asaf Avidan is a singer songwriter from Israel who formed a band called The Mojos in 2006, and together score a #30 hit this week with One Day / Reckoning Song. The track was originally featured on the band's 2008 debut album The Reckoning and has now been remixed by German DJ Wankelmut. The track has already been #1 in Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy and Germany, as well as going top 10 in Czech Republic, Denmark, France and Sweden. Ben Howard - Burgh Island EP enters at #32 25 year old English singer songwriter Ben Howard gets himself a second top 40 entry this week with the Burgh Island EP as #32. This is somewhat unusual as the individual tracks on Ben's new EP have not sold enough to be top 100, but the digital pack has sold enough to debut inside the top 40. Ben Howard released his debut album Every Kingdom last year, which contains the minor top 100 singles The Wolves, Keep Your Head Up, The Fear and Old Pine. His only other top 40 hit was Only Love, which is also taken from the debut album and peaked at #37 in the singles chart. Burgh Island EP therefore is Ben Howard's highest charting single/EP to date. Hot Natured feat Ali Love - Benediction enters at #40 Hot Natured are an electronic/house duo from East London, consisting of Jamie Jones and Lee Foss. The duo have been making music since 2008, having released several singles independently, they now get their UK top 40 debut with Benediction. The track features 32 year old vocalist Ali Love, who also has released several singles independently, but has had chart hits alongside the Chemical Brothers (Do It Again), Justice (Civilisation) and himself (Secret Sunday Lover). This comes from a new Hot Natured album due out next year, entitled Forward Motion. Calvin Harris gets the #1 album Dance producer and singer songwriter Calvin Harris scores his second UK #1 album as 18 Months debuts atop, containing his last 5 top 3 hits as well as Spectrum. Kylie Minogue comes in at #2 with her Abbey Road Sessions album, featuring orchestral remixes of many of her hits as well as some new material. After her massive wins at the MOBO Awards, Emeli Sande drops to #3 ahead of Fun and Taylor Swift at #4 and #5 respectively. Former Simply Red frontman Mick Hucknall debuts at #6 with his covers album American Soul. Formar X Factor winner Matt Cardle gets his second top 10 album with The Fire in at #8, following up #2 debut Leatters. Pop/ska band Madness maintain their 100% top 20 hit rate with studio albums as Oui Oui Si Si Ja Ja Da Da enters at #10. Mercury music prize winners Alt J get a new peak of #13 for their debut album An Awesome Wave. There are other new entries from Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Peter Andre, Eva Cassidy and The Soldiers. Opinion I am happy to see Robbie Williams get his 7th solo #1 hit and think that Candy is a true return to form for him, after the last few weren't great, still not better than the classics such as Millennium, She's The One, Angels, Let Me Entertain You and Come Undone. Wiley is absolute rubbish as usual and good to see him not at #1 this time ... I'm glad I can't hear him right now! Always good to see Fun high up in the charts, as I love We Are Young and Some Nights, just hope that Carry On can become a decent sized hit. Whilst I like much of Calvin Harris' output, I really don't like Drinking From The Bottle, mind you that's probably because I hat Tinie Tempah. I really like Ben Howard's new EP and am glad to see it make the top 40, not so keen on that Benediction song or Asaf Avidan's one though.

007 Chart Commentary - 28th Oct 2012
Labrinth feat Emeli Sande - Beneth Your Beautiful enteres at #1 23 year old record producer and singer songwriter Tim McKenzie scores his first actual number one single, under the name of Labrinth. He has teamed up with singer songwriter Emeli Sande, who can lay claim to her second UK chart topper after Professor Green's Read All About It exactly a year ago. Beneath Your Beautiful is the sixth single to be released from Labrinth's debut album Electronic Earth, and now also appears on Emeli's newly repackaged album Our Version Of Events. The pair performed the track on last week's X Factor which as a result moves from #85 last week all the way to #1. The track has sold over 100k this week, something of a rarity for a post-album single to sell over 100k in a week - recent examples being Adele's Someone Like You and Coldplay's Paradise. Labrinth has actually had a number one previously, as uncredited feature on Tinie Tempah's Pass Out in 2010. Later that year Labrinth hit #3 with his debut single Let The Sun Shine, which was followed by huge #2 hit Earthquake (also exactly a year ago) then #4 hit Last Time, #12 hit Express Yourself, and #55 Treatment. He therefore has a #1, a #2, a #3 and a #4 hit from his debut album, something that Flo Rida has also managed this year. More on Emeli later ... JLS - Hottest Girl In The World enters at #6 This week's proper highest new entry (into the top 100 at least) is Hottest Girl In The World, the new single from UK boyband JLS. JLS of course first exploded onto the scene in 2009 after coming second in the previous year's X Factor. They scored 2 instant #1s with Beat Again and Everybody In Love, followed by #6 hit One Shot. They also scored another 2 straight #1s in 2010 with The Club Is Alive and Love You More, followed by #8 hit Eyes Wide Shut. Last year they got a 5th #1 with She Makes Me Wanna but made #2 with Take A Chance On Me which only stayed for one more week in the top 40, followed by #16 hit Do You Feel What I Feel. This year though, JLS have had 2 #6 hits, charity single Proud also lasted for 2 weeks in the top 40 after entering at #6. This is the lead single to their 4th album Evolution, due out before the end of the year, the track Hottest Girl In The World was performed on the X Factor last weekend also. Nonetheless 11 top 10 hits (including Wishin On A Star) is still a very good achievement indeed. Naughty Boy feat Emeli Sande - Wonder enters at #10 UK record producer, songwriter and rapper Shahid Khan gets another top 10 hit alongside Scottish singer songwriter Adele Emeli Sande. Naughty Boy and Emeli Sande debut at #10 with Wonder, marking the pair's third top 10 hit together, with Chupmunk's 2008 #6 hit Diamond Rings and Wiley's 2010 #8 hit Never Be Your Woman being the others where the 2 were credited. Since winning £44,000 on Channel 4's Deal Or No Deal, Naughty Boy has spent the past 2 years working with Emeli Sande to produce songs for the likes of Devlin, Leona Lewis (Trouble) and the majority of Emeli's album. Off the back of her work with Naughty Boy, Emeli hit #2 with her first solo single release Heaven around a year ago. This was followed by #21 hit Daddy, #2 smash Next To Me and #17 hit single My Kind Of Love. All of those hit singles, as well as Wonder and Beneath Your Beautiful can be found on her current album, which is the year's biggest seller to date. Emeli Sande therefore features on the #1 single, #10 single and #2 album this week. Bastille - Flaws enters at #21 London based 4 piece band Bastille first formed in 2010, after starting out as a solo project of lead singer Dan Smith. They have released 3 singles (as well as Laura Palmer EP) previously but have not troubled the top 40 - Flaws/Icarus, Overjoyed and Bad Blood. That all changes now as the band get their first top 40 hit with a standalone rerelease of debut track Flaws, which enters at #21. The band are to support the aforementioned Emeli Sande and have recently performed at the Reading and Leeds Festivals. All of these singles appear on the band's forthcoming album Bad Blood due out shortly. Lumineers - Ho Hey enters at #23 American folk band The Lumineers also get their first UK top 40 hit this week, as Ho Hey enters at #23. The band first formed in 2005 and started writing songs together but did not take off until last year when they played an open mic session at a Denver venue. After being featured on a TV advert for Bing, the debut single Ho Hey now rises into the top 40. There is a self titled debut album scheduled for release early next year by the band. Taylor Swift hits #1 with her album US singer Taylor Swift gets her very first UK #1 album this week as 4th album Red hits the top spot, featuring huge #4 single We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together and the 4 promotional singles that followed. Emeli sande jumps to #2 as her album is repackaged this week, ahead of last week's #1 from Jake Bugg. Boyband Lawson debut at #4 with their album Chapman Square, featuring top 5 singles When She Was Mine, Taking Over Me and #6 peaking Standing In The Dark. Rapper Dappy enters at #5 with his solo album Bad Intentions, featuring #1 hit single No Regrets, #2 Rockstar and #11 Good Intentions. Daniel O'Donnel gets himself a 14th top 10 album with Songs From The Movies And More, which I assume is what it is. Heavy rockers Stone Sour enter at #13, whilst hip hop singer Kendrick Lamar debuts at #16 with Good Kid, Maad City. Opinion I am very happy to see both Labrinth and Emelie Sande hit #1, as Beneath Your Beautiful is a lovely song and their X Factor performance was great. Whilst JLS have done some good songs in the past, I cannot say the same about Hottest Girl In The World ... can do much better. Wonder on the other hand is brilliant, as is everything Emeli Sande has done to date, it surely deserves better than #10 though. I have loved Bastille's singles to date and am glad to see Flaws finally get them a top 40 hit, Flaws also deserves better. I'm not fussed on the Lumineers track really.

007 Chart Commentary - 21st Oct 2012
Calvin Harris feat Florence Welch - Sweet Nothing enters at #1 Winning a closely run battle for #1 this week is Calvin Harris, who scores his second chart topper after 4 successive #2 peaking hits (as lead artist). Hailing from Dumfries in Scotland, Harris, hit #10 with his debut Acceptable In The 80s in 2007, followed by #3 hit The Girls and a few minor hits. In 2009, he scored his first #1 with I'm Not Alone, then he was Ready For The Weekend, hitting #3. Last year he hit #2 alongside Kelis on Bounce, then again with Feel So Close. Earlier this year, he repeated that feat twice with Neyo on Let's Go and with Example on We'll Be Coming Back. However Calvin did score 3 #1s as featured credit - on Dizzee Rascal's Dance Wiv Me, Rihanna's million selling We Found Love and Florence & The Machine's Spectrum this year. It is Florence Welch whom he teams up with for Sweet Nothing, providing Florence with her second #1 of the year. CAlvin's new album is due out within the next few weeks, featuring this and his 4 #2 hits. Lawson - Standing In The Dark enters at #6 British four piece band Lawson get themselves a third straight top 10 hit, as third single Standing In The Dark debuts at #6 this week. The band consist of Andy Brown, Adam Pitts, Joel Peat and Ryan Fletcher, and made their debut this year with #4 hit When She Was Mine, followed by #3 hit Taking Over Me. These 3 singles are taken from Lawson's debut album due out next week, entitled Chapman Square, named after the place that they first played together. Ahead of Lawson are last week's top 4 slightly reshuffled, below them are climbers from Taylor Swift (12-7 We Are Never Ever ...) and Maroon 5 (18-8 One More Night). Rebecca Ferguson - Backtrack enters at #15 X-Factor runner up from 2010, Rebecca Ferguson gets herself a second top 20 hit this week as Backtrack debuts at #15. After coming second in 2010's X-Factor to Matt Cardle, Rebecca debuted at #10 with first single release Nothing's Real But Love. Then she hit #3 with debut album Heaven, however none of the 3 subsequent single made the top 100. Backtrack is the first single to be taken from the repackaged version of her Heaven album, having been performed on last week's X-Factor. That's 3 mentions of a reality TV show, more to come ... Justin Bieber feat Nicki Minaj - Beauty & A Beat enters at #20 Canadian teen star Justin Bieber bags himself another UK top 20 hit this week as new single Beauty & A Beat enters at #20, alongside rapper Nicki Minaj. Justin made his bedut in this country in 2009 with #11 peaking One Time, followed by huge #3 hit Baby and #9 Eenie Meenie with Sean Kingston. These singles as well as a few other minor hits were taken from debut album My World. Then came #21 Christmas single Mistletoe and album Under The Mistletoe last year. This year, he got his first #1 album with Believe and first #2 single with Boyfriend. That album was preceded by 3 promotional singles Die In Your Arms, All Around The World and As Long As You Love Me. The latter peaked at #22 as the second single, now Beauty & The Beat goes 2 better by entering at #20 this week. By coincidence, Nicki Minaj's own current single Va Va Voom also peaked at #20 last week. Tyler James - Single Tear enters at #28 Tyler James is perhaps best known as coming joint runner up on the BBC talent show The Voice UK, finishing behind Leanne Mitchell and equal with Bo Bruce. Tyler previously had a #25 hit in 2004 with Why Do I Do and a #16 hit with Foolish (from his debut album) the following year, before quitting the music business for personal reasons. However after all The Voice UK finalists' tracks were released to iTunes, Tyler James was the only one to make the top 40. He entered at #39 with his cover of Steve Winwood's 1986 hit Higher Love. Now he scores a 3rd top 30 hit with his new single Single Tear, taken from his forthcoming second album A Place I Go. Everything Everything - Cough Cough enters at #37 Everything Everything are a UK indie band who formed in 2007, and were featured on the BBC Sound Of 2010 list of upcoming talent. That year, the band released their debut album Man Alive, which yielded no hit singles but made #17 in the album charts. Now they score their first top 40 hit by entering at 37, taken from their forthcoming second album Arc, due out in Jan 2013. It seems that their coughing has drawn attention to them ... I think they should try Benilyn really! Jake Bugg beats Leona to #1 in the album chart Winning a rather interesting battle for this week's #1 album is English singer songwriter Jake Bugg with his debut album, featuring singles Country Song, Taste It, Seen It All, Lightning Bolt and Two Fingers (which is in at #33). Entering only at #3 this week is the rather delayed third album release from X-Factor winner Leona Lewis, Glass Heart was widely expected to ease its way to #1 but makes do with #3 instead (featuring top 10 hit Trouble, which drops to #13 this week). Rebecca Ferguson returns to #5 with Heaven, a place ahead of the 3rd album from Bat For Lashes entitled The Haunted Man. Other new album entries are from Art Garfunkel, flok band Bellowhead, jazz singer Diana Krall and Donald Fagen (former lead singer of Steeley Dan). Opinion I am happy that Calvin Harris has finally scored a #1 after 4 #2s from this era, I do really like Sweet Nothing and think it's the best from this current era. Lawson's Standing In the Dark is ok but nothing special, I prefer the other 2 songs to be honest. I am very happy to see the brilliant Maroon 5 score a third top 10 single from this era ... who'd have thought it after the relative flop of their third album (and singles). I really like Rebecca Ferguson and love her album, Backtrack is also brilliant and good to see her hit top 15 with it. Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj on the other hand are my 2 least favourite acts, probably of all time, and the dirge that is Beauty & A Beat does nothing to change my mind. Tyler James though I do really like and think he should have won The Voice UK, Single Tear is very good indeed and deserves to be higher than #28 in my opinion. Same can be said for the Jake Bugg track, mind you his album really deserves to be #1 over Leona Lewis, whose album I also really like.

007 Chart Commentary - 14th October 2012
Swedish House Mafia - Don't You Worry Child debuts at #1 Dance trio Swedish House Mafia recently announced that they were to have a haitus after releasing one final single. As a result Don't You Worry Child debuts at #1 for Axwell, Steve Angelo and Steve Ingrosso. The trio's first single came in May 2010, when they teamed up with Pharrell Williams for #7 hit One (Your Name). This was followed by the #4 peaking Tinie Tempah collaboration Miami 2 Ibiza, the second single from their first album Until One. They then reached #10 in May last year with Save The World, featuring John Martin on vocals. Then came #4 hit Antidote with Knife Party, followed by instrumental track Greyhound which peaked at #13. John Martin is also the featured vocalist on Don't You Worry Child, their first #1 out of 6 releases. Adele - Skyfall climbs to #2 So at this time last week, it was widely expected that Adele would rise to #1 and claim her second UK chart topper. Due to Swedish House Mafia's big seller, Skyfall has to make do with #2 for the time being. It is now the joint highest peaking Bond theme out of the 23 released so far, equalling A View To A Kill's peak achieved by Duran Duran in 1985. All of the theme songs released since then have made the top 12, however Shirley Bassey who has recorded 3 has never made the top 20 despite being well known and remembered. Adele now scores her 5th top 5 single since her 2008 debut, the biggest of course being the million selling chart topper Someone Like You. Leona Lewis - Trouble enters at #7 The biggest selling X-Factor winner to date Leona Lewis returns to the top 10 this week with her new single Trouble. After winning 2006's X-Factor, Leona started her career with the #1 winner's song A Moment Like This then million selling #1 single Bleeding Love. Then came #2 hit single Better In Time (double A side with Footprints In The Sand) and #5 hit Forgive Me. These singles came from her massive 3 million + selling debut album Spirit, as did her third #1 cover of Snow Patrol's Run. #2 hit single Happy came in 2009 and #12 peaking I Got You, the only 2 singles to be released from second album Echo. She then had a legal battle with dance producer Avicci, who ended up co-credited on #4 Collide. Last seen at #8 with her cover of Johnny Cash's Hurt, Leona goes one place higher with the lead single of her third album Glass Heart. Maroon 5 - One More Night enters at #18 US pop/rock band Maroon 5 get themselves a 7th UK top 20 hit this week as One More Night enters at #18, the 3rd single from current album Overexposed. Formerly known as Kara's Flowers, the band debuted in 2002 with #13 hit Harder To Breath under the name of Maroon 5. This was followed by the huge #3 hit This Love and a big #4 hit She Will Be Loved. These singles came from their huge debut album Song About Jane, as did minor hits Sunday Morning and Must Get Out. Most people thought they did get out, as it wasn't until 2007 that they came back with #2 hit Makes Me Wonder. A few other minor hits from their 2nd album I Won't Be Soon Before Long followed, as did a third album Hands All Over. Last year saw them score their biggest hit single with the million selling Moves Like Jagger, however they only hit #1 for the first time this year with Payphone. One More Night has recent been #1 in their native America and now debuts here at #18. Taylor Swift - I Knew You Were Trouble enters at #23 22 year old US country and pop singer Taylor Alison Swift gets another top 30 hit this week as the 3rd promotional single entitled I Knew You Were Trouble enters at #23. This follows last week's #26 entry for Red and the #30 entry for Begin Again the week previous, the same week that she achieved a new peak of #4 for full single We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together. There is another due next week, ahead of the release of her 4th studio album entitled Red, which is to include all of these tracks plus a duet with Ed Sheeran. Disclosure feat Sam Smith - Latch enters at #26 Entering at #26 this week is Disclosure who are two brothers from Surrey making house/future music, with first full single release entitled Latch. Disclosure first formed in July 2010 and have been making music for some time, they also have a UK tour lined up for March 2013 as well as an upcoming album. This track features vocals from Yorkshire based singer songwriter Sam Smith. Mumford & Sons return to the top of the album chart It is not very often we get a return to #1 on the album chart, this week Babel by Mumford & Sons has done just that, after debuting at #1 then being knocked off by Muse last week. Ellie Goulding gets the highest new entry with second album Halcyon, featuring Anything Could Happen and following on from her #1 debut album Lights. Jeff Lynn is on 3 of this week's top 10 albums - at #7 is a solo album of covers entitled Long Wave, #8 is actually a Jeff Lynn solo album credited to ELO as it is re-recordings of the band's hits, and #10 is a non-mover for the actual Electric Light Orchestra's original hits collection All Over the World. Other new entries come from rock band All Time Low at #9, Tame Impala at #14, Miss at #21 and Mika at #24, also Barbra Streisand comes in at #31 with her Release Me album. Opinion I am not a fan of Swedish House Mafia or dance music in general, however I do really like Don't You Worry Child but I still think the amazing Skyfall should've got to #1 instead. I am a big fan of Leona Lewis and really like her new single Trouble and think it deserves better, even if it's no Bleeding Love or Run which are 2 masterpieces in my opinion. I am also a huge fan of Maroon 5 and am happy to see them score another top 20 hit with the very catchy One More Night. I am not a huge fan of Taylor Swift, whilst I really like We Are Never Ever... I don't really like the promotion tracks much. I am not keen on that Disclosure track really, it's not bad and certainly better than that rubbish spouted out by Nicki Minaj.
