007 Chart Commentary - 7th October 2012
Rihanna - Diamonds enters at #1 The Barbadan hit machine that is Rihanna gets herself another UK chart topper this week as new single Diamonds debuts stright in at #1. Robyn Rihanna Fenty was first seen in the UK charts with #2 debut Pon De Replay and has since scored a massive 32 top 20 hits (including several features). This is her 7th #1 in total; following Umbrella, Run This Town (with Jay Z), Take A Bow, Only Girl (In The World), What's My Name and We Found Love. Rihanna has corwritten Diamonds with Sia (Fulmer), who has had 2 top 10 hits with David Guetta and a top 5 with Flo Rida this year, as well as a #10 hit of her own Taken For Granted. Diamonds thus knocks Gangnam Style down to #2, there is huge competition for her next week from Adele and Swedish House Mafia. One Direction - Live While We're Young enters at #3 The odds on favourites for this week's number one looked to be the highly anticipated new single from One Direction, however in the end Live While We're Young debuts at #3. The 1D boys first rose to fame when they came third in 2010's X-Factor, then last year What Makes You Beautiful sold massively on its first week to debut at #1. This was followed by #3 hit Gotta Be You and #9 One Thing, from their big selling debut album Up All Night. Like Rihanna's Diamonds, this new single has not been held back for a long period of time, but has had a fair number of pre-orders. Live While We're Young is taken from the boys' forthcoming Take Me Home album ... many teenage girls would love to! Adele - Skyfall enters at #4 As if 1D vs PSY vs Rihanna wasn't enough of a chart battle, Adele joined the race after releasing her highly anticipated Bond theme Skyfall on Friday. For over a year it was speculated that Adele was recording and performing the theme to the new James Bond film Skyfall, those romours have been proven to be true. The track premierred on Friday and was released then, and so enters at #4 selling 84k in just 2 days with the likelihood of becoming the first #1 Bond theme ever next week. Adele Laurie Blue Adkins first came on the scene in 2008 with #2 hit Chasing Pavements, followed by 3 more smaller hits, from her debut album 19. Then last year 21 came along and broke many records, in the process selling over 4.5 million copies. The 3 huge singles from that were #2 Rolling In The Deep, million selling #1 Someone Like You and huge selling #11 Set Fire To The Rain, there were also 3 further album tracks from 21 to chart in the top 100. Adele also debuts at #37 this week with her cover of Bonnie Raitt's I Can't Make You Love Me, also recorded by the likes of Prince, Kenny Rogers, Paul Carrack and Bon Iver, however only George Michael and now Adele have had top 40 hits with the song. Ellie Goulding - Anything Could Happen enters at #5 Ellie Goulding proves that indeed Anything Can Happen as she is another of this week's big new entries, completing a top 5 made up of last week's number one and new entries. Ellie first debuted with huge #4 hit Starry Eyed in 2010, followed by a #1 album Lights, #26 single Guns & Horses and #19 single The Writer. She also featured on Tinie Tempah's #12 hit Wonderman and scored he biggest hit to date with a cover of Elton John's Your Song, making #2. Lights was released as a single after that but could only limp to #49 here, whilst hitting #2 in the US. Anything Could Happen is the first single to be taken from her 2nd album Halcyon, out next week. Jason Mraz - I Won't Give Up climbs to #11 Jason Mraz's I Won't Give Up is the latest track to reach a new peak due to a performance on X-Factor. The single was first released earlier this year, peaking at #13 but selling very well in the process. The same can be said for Jason's only other UK top 75 hit I'm Yours, which peaked at #11 in 2008 but has now become the biggest selling non-top 10 hit, having sold well in excess of 700k so far. The aforementioned Set Fire To The Rain is not far behind as the highest selling #11 hit in this country. Nicki Minaj - Va Va Voom entrs at #20 Trinidad born US rapper Nicki Minaj gets herself another top 20 hit this week as new single Va Va Voom zooms in at #20. Onika Tanya Maraj first came on the scene in 2010 with minor top 30 hits Moment 4 Life, Check It Out (with Will i am) and Girls Fall Like Dominos. Then in 2011, Nicki scored her first big hit in the form of #8 smash Superbass, followed by #16 Rihanna collaboration Fly. Then earlier this year she scored a massive #2 hit Starships, which has sold in excess of 800k so far this year. That was followed by #8 peaking Pound The Alarm and now the #20 entry point for Va Va Voom. The last 3 singles are taken from her second album Pink Friday : Roman Reloaded, with the previous singles all being from her debut Pink Friday. Taylor Swift - Red enters at #26 Releasing promotional singles leading up to the release of an album is becoming quite popular recently, with Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and David Guetta doing it recently. Red is the third pre-album single to come from Taylor Swift's forthcoming album of the same name, following last week's begin again and the full single We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together (still in the top 10 at #10). Love Story remained Taylor's highest peaking UK single and oly other one to make top 20, peaking at #2 as her debut single in 2008. The Other Tribe - Skirts entrs at #36 The Other Tribe are a new 6 piece indie band who mat whist studying at Bristol University and formed the band last year. The rather unusual 6-piece band have played many live venues and have become famous for their painted bodies! They have since gathered a big following with support from the likes of Radio 1, and now a top 40 single with debut single Skirts as it debuts at #36. One to watch for the future me thinks! Muse top the album charts UK rock band Muse top the album charts with 6th album Second Law, becoming their 4th straight #1 album. Mumford & Sons drop to #2, whist Pink and the Killers stay at #3 and #4 respectively. Harmony group The Overtones debut at #6 with their 3rd album Higher, whilst ELO are back at #10 with their compilation All Over The World. DJ Fresh enters at #14 with his Next Levelism album, a place higher than Van Morrison's live set Born To Sing, No Plan B (he's at #24 this week!). Personal opinion I am happy to see Rihanna top the charts as I love the song Diamonds, good to see her not doing another dance-pop type song again. I do actually quite like 1D's new song, even if it is a rehash of What Makes You Beautiful and One Thing. However Adele's Skyfall has to be the best ever Bond theme, right up there with A View To A Kill and Live & Let Die for me. I am a huge fan of Adele and think this is a great Adele song too, not quite on a par with Someone Like You but there again not much is for me. I really like Ellie Goulding's new one too, I'm a big fan of hers as well. Were it not for that rubbish Gangnam Style, this would have to be the best top 5 this year so far. Va Va Voom is typical Nicki Minaj, absolute rubbish! I am undecided on Skirts by The Other Tribe and on Red by Taylor Swift. I'm not a huge fan of Muse but it's good to see another rock album do well, roll on Ellie next week.

Oops yes that's true ... #1 is a climber right enough. I guess it could actually be 8 as DJ Fresh has a new entry at #13. :D

007 Chart Commentary - 30th Sept 2012
PSY - Gangnam Style rises to #1 To the surprise of virtually nobody, the K-Pop sensation has fully taken off here in the UK as Gangnam Style goes to #1. South Korean rapper PSY rose to #3 last week and has had quite a big lead throughout this week. The United Kingdom is now the 10th country in which the track has gone to #1, largely due to the heavy rotation of its video, also due to increasing airplay. It replaces Hall Of Fame, which drops to #2 for The Script and Will I Am. In the top 15, no less than 6 tracks reach a new peak - Flo Rida's I Cry (#3), Taylor Swift's We Are Never Ever ... (#4), Fun's Some Nights (#7), David Guetta's She Wolf (#8), Connor Maynard's Turn Around (#9) and Mumford's I Will Wait (#12). There is also big competition for next week's #1 from One Direction, Rihanna and Ellie Goulding, as well as Gangnam Style. DJ Fresh feat RaVaughn - The Feeling enters at #13 Due to the high number of climbers and lack of big new releases this week, the highest new entry is way down at #13. DJ Fresh followed up his #1s Louder and Hot Right Now with #6 single The Power, with Dizzee Rascal. Fresh now follows that up with #13 entry The Feeling, all 4 singles coming from his forthcoming album Next Levelism. Previous DJ Fresh singles have featured singers Cecile, Sian Evans, Rita Ora and Dizzee Rascal, this one features one called RaVaughn. Paloma Faith - Never Tear Us Apart enters at #16 Paloma Faith returns to the top 40 this week with her new single Never Tear Us Apart, entering at #16. Never Tear Us Apart was originally a hit for INXS, making #24 in 1988 for the Australian rock group. This cover is a standalone single and is used in the current Marks & Spencer TV adverts. Stone Cold Sober was Paloma's debut single in 2009 making #17, New York got her to #15 but subsequent singles flopped. This year however Picking Up The Pieces made #7 but follow up 30 Minute Love Affair could only stumble to #50. However both of her albums have sold well - Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful and Fall To Grace. Neither of these albums contain Never Tear Us Apart. The Fray - How To Save A Life and Jason Mraz - I Won't Give Up re-enter Originally a huge top 5 debut hit for The Fray in 2003, How To Save A Life is back at #27 following another 59p reduction. I Won’t Give Up was a #13 hit for Jason Mraz at the beginning of this year but had a pretty decent chart run. After being performed on X Factor, it is back at #23. Muse reach a new peak of #28 with Madness, which is likely to be surpassed next week with their album release. Opinion Whilst it is no surprise nonetheless, I am not happy at that abysmal Gangnam Style thing topping the charts here, top 40 was bad enough. Good to see Taylor Swift get a new peak with only the second song of hers I actually like (Love Story being the other). Not so good to see Flo Rida get into the top 5 with the predictably awful I Cry. The new DJ Fresh song is not great but not as bad as his Dizzee Rascal collaboration, Hot Right Now remains my favourite. Great to see Paloma Faith’s wonderful cover of Never Tear Us Apart get in the top 20. Even better to see The Fray and Jason Mraz’s gorgeous tracks re-enter, also fantastic to see Adele’s version of I Can’t Make You Love Me finally chart. Mumford & Sons are also very welcome atop the album chart.

007 Chart Commentary - 23rd Sept 2012
The Script feat will.i.am - Hall Of Fame stays at #1 So Danny & co stay at #1 this week as Hall Of Fame beats off some stiff competition once again, particularly in the top 3. The last single to spend a fortnight at the top was Wiley’s Heatwave 6 weeks ago, whilst the last to spend 3 weeks was Florence & The Machine Spectrum 8 weeks ago. The Script’s album is at the same position as its name this week as #3 drops a place to #3. Can the single spend 3 weeks at the top, looking very unlikely at this point. Example – Say Nothing enters at #2 UK singer and rapper Elliot John Gleave gets this week’s highest new entry as he says nothing about entering at #2 and scoring a 6th top 3 hit! Example first made an appearance in the top 40 with first proper single Watch The Sun Come Up, it made #19 in 2009. Next he declared he won’t go quietly, that made #6 ahead of his Kickstarts at #3. In 2011, he scored his first chart topper with Changed The Way You Kiss Me, followed by another #1 as he struggled to Stay Awake. Minor hits Natural Disaster and Midnight Run followed last year. He also featured on Wretch 32’s Unorthodox and Calvin Harris We’ll Be Coming Back – both #2 hits. PSY – Gangnam Style climbs to #3 Already being massive all over the world thanks to a viral video, Korean rapper PSY shoots up 34 places to #3 this week with Gangnam Style. The track stands a very good chance of going to #1 next week as it is currently at #1 on iTunes and many other digital download sites. The associated music video has had over 253 million views worldwide, making it the most viewed K-Pop video ever. Gangnam in the title refers to a district of the South Korean capital Seoul and the song is a satirical view of life in that suburb, together with some unusual dance moves. Dappy - Good Intentions enters at #12 UK rapper Costadinos Contostavlos gets another UK top 40 under the name of Dappy as his Good Intentions can only get him to #12. This follows up his #1 hit No Regrets from last year and #2 hit Rockstar from earlier this year, teaming up with Brian May for the latter hit. Dappy also had a UK top 40 hit with freestyle rap track I’m Coming (Tarzan Part 2), as well as featuring on Cover Drive’s recent #29 hit Explode. His debut solo album Bad Intentions comes out later this year, featuring the aforementioned hit singles as well as this one. Conor Maynard feat Neyo - Turn Around climbs to #18 This week’s second highest climber comes from Brighton based singer Conor Paul Maynard, scoring his third top 20 hit with Turn Around. This follows his #2 debut hit Can’t Say No and #4 peaking Vegas Girl and comes from his #1 album Contrast. This track features Neyo and is one of 3 Neyo tracks in this week’s top 40. Neyo’s own Let Me Love You drops to #4, whilst he features on David Guetta’s album track Play Hard which is a non-mover at #22. Jessica Wright - Dance All Night Actress and TV personality Jessica Wright is most famous as a cast member of hit TV series The Only Way Is Essex. Jessica now has a solo top 40 hit to her name as Dance All Night debuts at #35 this week. This is following the Cast Of TOWIE’s previous top 40 appearance with their cover version of Last Christmas … strangely enough last Christmas was the time of its brief chart run! Killers top the album charts Just as last week, this week there were 2 big album releases competing for #1, the Killers emerged victorious this week by some way. Battle Born now becomes the US rock band’s 4th successive #1 studio album; following Hot Fuss, Sam’s Town and Day & Age to the top. US singer songwriter Pink enters at #2 with her sixth studio album The Truth About Love, her 5th straight top 3 album in the UK. Michael Jackson’s Bad album has been re-released to commemorate the 25th anniversary of its release, now entitled Bad 25, it comes back in at #6. Carly Rae Jepsen’s debut album Kiss enters at #9, containing million selling single Call Me Maybe and Owl City collaboration Good Time. Other new albums are from Grizzly Bear, Band Of Horses, Skunk Anansie and Nelly Furtado - the latter 2 missed the top 40 completely. Opinion I am so happy that The Script have held on to #1 with Hall Of Fame and that Example hasn’t got there, as Hall Of Fame is really good. Say Nothing is ok but not #1 material to me, even worse would be that awful Gangnam Style being #1 … alas it will be next week anyway! I’m also glad that crappy Dappy missed the top 10 as just like Tulisa's Live It Up, the song is pure rubbish. I don’t mind Conor Maynard’s Turn Around, far better than his last 2 forgetable pieces of rubbish. Not keen on Jessica Wright’s song, don’t like TOWIE much either. On the + side, I am glad that the excellent Killers and Pink albums are the top 2 this week, even if I do prefer Pink out of the 2.

iTunes Weekly Thread: W/C 16th September 2012
Strange to see this go up significantly again, I don't think it's had much airplay but just really from the Olympics performance as far as I know. Pity that this solo version couldn't have hit #1 as I think it's far better without the Pro Green rap.

007 Chart Commentary - 16th Sept 2012
Yes it would be nice to see You'll Never Walk Alone get back to #1 but looking at iTunes, it's looking unlikely now. Still top 10 is great for a 50 year old song (67 year old if you take the original from Carousel) and raising money for a good cause. It would have been better to see it beat Example and Dappy, whose new songs I don't really like. Both Mumford & The Killers are great too in a different way of course, they'll be the next albums I'll be buying I think as I've liked the previous material from each act respectively. After hearing Gangnam Style a few times, I can safely say that I am firmly in the latter category of hating it, I can see it becoming a fair sized hit here now unfortunately. As others have said, it sounds like an even worse LMFAO "song" if that's possible.

007 Chart Commentary - 16th Sept 2012
The Script feat Will.i.am – Hall Of Fame rises to #1 Irish pop group The Script are sitting in the hall of fame this week, as they score their first #1 single, after entering at #2. They debuted in 2008 with #15 hit We Cry, followed by huge #2 hit The Man Who Can’t Be Moved. This was followed by hit single Breakeven which sold very well despite only getting a #21 peak. Second album spawned #4 smash For The First Time, but the 3 follow up singles flopped. Hall Of Fame features US superstar Will.i.am, who is best known as a Black Eyed Pea and also as a mentor on The Voice, alongside The Script’s Danny O’Donoghue. Will has had 16 UK top 20 hits including 5 #1s as part of Black Eyed Peas. This is his third chart topper outside of the group, following Usher’s OMG from 2010 and This Is Love from earlier this year. Amelia Lily – You Bring Me Joy enters at #2 X-Factor contestant Amelia Lily gets this week’s highest new entry with You Bring Me Joy, going straight in at #2. Amelia was a contestant of last year’s X-Factor, finishing third behind Marcus Collins and Little Mix. The latter scored their second #1 single 2 weeks ago with Wings, whilst the former hit #9 with his cover of Seven Nation Army. #4 placed Misha B also scored a #11 hit with Home Run. Amelia’s next single is apparently called Shut Up, presumably not a Black Eyed Peas cover. Flo Rida – I Cry climbs to #6 US rapper and singer Flo Rida scores his fourth successive top 10 hit of the year as I Cry ascends to #6 this week. It follows #1 smash Good Feeling, #4 Wild Ones featuring Sia (more from her later) and #2 hit Whistle. This marks Flo’s most successful era in terms of singles success, mostly following up massive hits with lesser hits previously. Debut #2 smash Low was followed up with #20 Elevator, #1 Right Round was followed by #18 Sugar and #1 Club Can’t Handle Me preceded #41 Turn Around (5 4 3 2 1). Tulisa feat Tyga – Live It Up enters at #11 The second highest of this weeks 10 new entries goes to X-Factor judge and former member of N-Dubz Tulisa Contostavlos as she lives it up. This is following up Tulisa’s debut solo #1 hit Young, well she should really live it up while she’s young! Tulisa has featured on 8 top 20 hits with N-Dubz and charity single I Got Soul, so this is her 11th in 4 years. This track features US rapper Tyga, whose name is an acronym for Thank You God Always. Last year, Tyga had a #39 hit Rack City and has had several minor US hits since. Gerry & The Pacemakers – You'll Never Walk Alone re-enters at #12 Gerry & The Pacemakers were formed in the 1960s and alongside the Beatles, played a big part in the Mersey sound of that era. The group was formed by Gerry Marsden and saw their first 3 singles all go to #1 – How Do You Do It, I Like It and You’ll Never Walk Alone. The latter was originally a show tune from the 1945 musical Carousel and was covered by Gerry & The Pacemakers. The song has since been adopted as the official anthem for Liverpool Football Club and is used on numerous occasions. There is now an online campaign to get the song to number one to raise awareness of the Hillsborough tragedy, where 96 people lost their lives. As a result the track re-enters at #12 with a strong possibility of reaching the top next week, thus making it almost 50 years from the date it first charted to now – October 1963 to September 2012. David Guetta enters at #14 with She Wolf and #22 with Play Hard French producer David Guetta gets not 1 but 2 new entries this week, as new single She Wolf (Falling To Pieces) enters at #14 and album track Play Hard enters at #22. She Wolf is also the title of a top 5 hit for Shakira, however David Guetta has added the subtitle of Falling To Pieces to distinguish. She Wolf sees David Guetta team up with singer Sia once more, as he did on huge #1 hit Titanium. Play Hard features Neyo and Akon, Guetta has also previously had a #1 hit with Akon on Sexy Bitch. Play Hard uses a sample from Alice Deejay’s hit Better Off Alone. This is now David Guetta’s 21st top 20 hit on which he is credited since his 2001 debut, including 5 #1s – When Love Takes Over, Sexy Bitch, Getting’ Over You, Club Can’t Handle Me and Titanium. Mumford & Sons – I Will Wait enters at #17 English folk rock band Mumford & Sons formed in 2007 by Marcus Mumford and his sons Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall and Ted Dwane. They played small venues around London and released an EP entitled Love Your Ground. However it wasn’t until 2009 that they got their commercial breakthrough with massive selling debut album Sigh No More. That spawned a few minor hits including #33 The Cave and #24 single Little Lion Man, the latter of which was their highest charting to date. They now beat that as I Will Wait enters at #17, as the first single from their highly anticipated second album Babel out next week (Mon 17th). Killers – Runaways enters at #18 US rock band The Killers make their return to the singles charts this week as Runaways hits #18, also preceding their new album release. The band first made an impact in 2004 with huge hit singles Somebody Told Me and Mr Brightside, the latter has become something of a sleeper hit, selling over 500k copies despite only peaking at #10 and having 3 weeks in the top 40 originally. The band have had several other hits since, including #2 hit When We Were Young in 2006 and #3 hit Human in 2008. In 2010 Brandon Flowers released a solo album and had a #8 hit with Crossfire, however now the band are back with a tenth top 20 hit in an 8 year career. Kanye West feat Jay Z & Big Sean – Clique enters at #29 US rapper and producer Kanye West is back, alongside fellow rappers Jay Z and Big Sean. Kanye Omari West first made his UK impact in 2004, with #9 hit Through The Wire followed by #10 All Falls Down and #16 Jesus Walks, all from his College Dropout album. Then Late Registration brought him 3 huge top 10 hits Gold Digger (#2), Diamonds From Sierra Leone (#8) and Touch The Sky (#6). 2007 saw his first #1 hit Stronger, followed by several smaller hits and #9 Homecoming (with Chris Martin). His 4th album 808s & Heartbreaks was a departure from the rap genre, it got him top 10 hits Love Lockdown and Heartless. In 2010 My Beautiful, Dark, Twisted Fantasy saw a return to his rap style, but just minor hit singles including All Of The Lights (featuring Rihanna and others). Last year, he teamed up with Jay Z for Watch The Throne, which gave him a controversial #10 hit Niggas In Paris. New album Cruel Summer is due out this year and Clique is its first top 40 single, debuting at #29 this week. PSY – Gangnam Style enters at #37 Now for something completely different, the first K-Pop single entering the UK charts at #37. Korean rapper PSY has been well known for his imaginative stage performances and videos for several years now. However it has only been with the release of a video on the Internet featuring some rather unusual dance moves that he has achieved worldwide recognition. That video is for Gangnam Style, already a sizeable hit in New Zealand, Canada, Netherland and Denmark (getting to #1 in the latter country). With an entry position of #37, it is looking like the song is catching on in the UK also. The XX – Coexist is this week’s #1 album This week, UK alternative band The XX debut at #1 with their second album as they Coexist with a top 3 made up of new entries. The Script come in at #2 with their third album entitled #3, 1 place short of their first 2 albums but 1 place higher than the title may suggest! Bob Dylan gets his 25th top 10 album in a career which has spanned over 50 years, as Tempest enters at #3. After their performance at the Paralympics Closing Ceremony, Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto rises to #4. X-Factor winner Joe McElderry gets himself a 4th top 20 album with Here’s What I Believe, who’d have thought? Pet Shop Boys grab an 11th top 10 studio album out of 11 releases since 1986, a further 3 compilation albums have made top 10 also. David Guetta is back with a new version of Nothing But The Beat, Billy Talent and ZZ Top also make top 40 entries in this week’s album chart. Personal Opinion I am very happy to see The Script get their first #1 single with the brilliant Hall Of Fame, they were great live. Shame their album couldn’t be a third #1, especially as I find The XX quite boring and don’t see the fuss. Anyway, I quite like You Bring Me Joy and glad to see it doing far better than expected. I really don’t like Tulisa’s Live It Up and am glad it has missed the top 10, Young was ok but nothing brilliant however this is utter rubbish. I love You’ll Never Walk Alone, not for its football connections, but because it is a very meaningful and nice song. I quite like David Guetta’s 2 entries and also really like Mumford and the Killers new ones too. All this positivity comes to an end now as I hate Kanye West’s new one but at least not as awful as that Niggas In Paris (a contender for my most hated song ever). I think that Gangnam Style is really bad in an LMFAO type of way, even the new Conor Maynard entry is better and I find it unappealing.

iTunes Weekly Thread: W/C 5th August 2012
I agree I'm not happy to see Skrillex this high, just when I thought it was going away for good. Same for Azealia being made 59p, and Bieber still climbing. :puke2: Looking good for Fun, Of Monsters & Men and also Cheryl Cole's Under The Sun. :cheer:
