Labour leadership election
I would sell it and then use the proceeds to buy up something in another country, I have a passion for motor racing and motorsport so would maybe set up a motor racing memorabilia store overseas or something and work there full time, my uncle moved to Australia after a career in IT and now runs a quite successful motorbike sales business I don't at all tbh, if I sold my business I would probably get an upper 5 figure sum for it maybe touching on for 6 figures, I have a portfolio of shares so again my business value and my shares are not hard cash they are literally bits of paper which could go seriously down in value as well as up In terms of cash in the bank you would be surprised, I run a car (used to run 2 cars), I don't own a house but instead pay over £15k a year in rent and council tax, I spend around £300 a month on food, around £150 a month on alcohol etc I am comfortable, if I wanted to go somewhere on holiday tomorrow I could afford it but I am not rich, typical middle class lifestyle

Yes What would be the point in me slaving away for less and less money ? it is not just direct taxation but stealth taxes and petrol too (especially petrol) It is frustrating doing 12 hr days and not having much to save at the end of the month as it has all gone on taxes, petrol etc while at the same time my taxes are being wasted on wars, nuclear weapons, housing immigrants who have never paid a penny in tax, Crazy Chris types who won't get off their fat arses and work, benefits for chavs who can't keep their legs shut and churn out kid after kid usually after one night stands with the dad, so long as I am enjoying the pursuit of money I will do it in this country but this last 5 years tested it to the absolute limit

Labour leadership election
I earn enough to pay top rate tax (not the 50%), I can stomach that as am a patriot but if this or any future governments started upping my tax then I am gone, I am in business because I am motivated by money and seeing more and more of it go into government hands when I have worked my nuts off to build a comfortable (but not rich) lifestyle does take away a lot of my motivation and I think 'why bother', I am not at the point where I have any desire to up sticks atm and go trade in another country but had Labour got in again I have no doubt I would be posting from an Australian, American or Canadian IP this time next year.

No one forces anyone to take out a loan, I run a business and have never taken a loan out in my life

Labour leadership election
50% is too high even now, put it up to 65% like Danny is suggesting and BA will turn a £500m loss into a massive profit coping with all the one way flights out of this country by the cream of our people all going off in search of places where you pay less tax. Why would there have to be cuts in public spending ? more people having more money to spend (around 8m people pay 40% tax) cutting them down to 25% will massively boost consumer consumption which in turn would create jobs which in turn would take more and more people out of state benefits and paying tax Having a flat rate of tax would mean travel companies, estate agents, car dealerships, retailers in general would be swamped and that would create jobs. People in jobs would pay tax

The important thing is to have taxation at a level where people will pay tax and that will bring in more money I read a while back that some companies were paying their directors works of art, rare vintage wines, gold, vintage cars, shares etc as opposed to paying them full salary so that the directors would be able to avoid taxes at higher rates, that kind of thing will go on and go on more under Danny's idea, tax avoiders and their accountants are much smarter than politicians and HMRC employees. Best thing is a flat rate of low tax for all and then people who are avoiding tax will be more inclined to pay tax

I am against inheritance tax it is immoral to pickpocket the dead which is what inheritance tax is effectively doing, the dead by and large paid taxes while they were alive and paid VAT on their possessions when they bought them so they are being taxed twice, inheritance tax is evil as far as I am concerned

Setting it at £1m will bring in no extra income though except maybe for the Cayman Islands and Belize, people who earn £1m would employ lawyers and accountants to ensure they don't pay tax so setting any oppressive tax rate won't bring in money it would just be symbolic I have no objection to windfall taxes on banks, oil companies, energy companies etc, I do think that the likes of Shell, BP, Centrica, banks etc are fleecing their customers in order to just make profits so windfall taxes would be more productive than hammering millionaires who will just exploit loopholes and pay little or nothing

Labour leadership election
Maybe so lol but Cameron's speech on the afternoon after the general election was one of the best delivered political speeches I have ever heard before, had a touch of Martin Luther King / Barack Obama / Michael Heseltine at conservative party conferences about it and those are the 3 best orators for me that I have seen since Churchill

Labour leadership election
The important thing in this country is to get people starting and growing businesses, that is ultimately where job creation comes from, small businesses and anyone who starts a business is going to have an aspiration to earn £150k a year so where is the incentive in an entrepreneur setting up on his own to be a success when you are telling him 'Work 16 hrs a day 5 days a week and we will take 3 days of your money and give it to scroungers and fund pointless wars'

Labour leadership election
While I am sure you mean well your idea of soaking the rich (mostly businessmen and entrepreneurs) would actually COST this country money and would be a token gesture that would benefit no one bar offshore tax havens, trust funds and lawyers and accountants trained in the art of tax avoidance loopholes We need a low tax economy to encourage investors and companies to set up offices in the UK, to retain the very best businessmen and doctors/scientists and to fight off competition from the rest of Europe I am in favour of a flat rate tax rate for ALL so that people will be encouraged and motivated to start businesses, so that overseas investors will start factories and offices here instead of Frankfurt or Paris, so that the top brains of this country (surgeons and scientists would be affected by your 65%) would stay here instead of going to work abroad and so that those that are exploiting loopholes will stop I would abolish income tax under £10,000 and then have a flat rate for ALL of the current basic rate of income tax

Milliband's are both very socially awkward and poor communicators, both are more like trainspotters or multi player gaming geeks and are best off in a strategic behind the scenes role as opposed to being leader Cameron is probably the best political orator since Churchill and Clegg is a fine debater/orator too so either of the Milliband's would be eaten for breakfast in a tv debate I detest all things Labour but I admired Andy Burnham during Labour's post election shame, he had the honesty and honour to go on tv and say Labour lost the election and should go into opposition and I respected him for that even if he is an expenses crook If I was a Labour supporter I would vote Burnham

Ones to do with prisoners are the ones I object to tbh Prisoners getting large amount of compensation for trivial things while in prison, whole life tariffs not being available etc etc To me prisoners having any RIGHTS above bedding and food and water is immoral to me, prisoners should not be able to claim compensation, they opted out of their rights when they committed their crimes IMHO

A common sense based British bill of rights is far better than what we are signed up to now, scrapping the HRA would not turn us into North Korea there would still be rights but the more lunatic aspects of the HRA would be amended and it would be more tailored to our country as opposed to a one size fits all system that there is for loads of countries

It is wrong that everyone on an estate should have a gun because the criminals carry guns, that makes them as bad as the criminals and leads to anarchy and they no longer have the moral high ground, a kid having a gun out of fear should face the same sentence of firearms possession as the local drug dealer who carries a gun should face. I was using myself as an example that I knowingly break the law by carrying an offensive weapon and that I accept any punishment that comes my way I wasn't comparing their lifestyles with mine.

I will give the example of the fact I carry a knuckle duster when I am in London in a night time, if someone tried to mug me I would use it without hesitation but also I accept that if I am caught with a knuckle duster whether I have used it or not I can accept and expect to be charged Just having a firearm because everyone else in the area has one will turn us into another America and I don't want to see that Each case should be judged on its merits, a first time victim of crime shooting someone because everyone in the estate has a gun should face a murder charge but a multiple victim of crime who armed himself out of fear of his life should be treated differently
-
Coalition programme
There is a big difference though between perceived fear of crime and actual crime itself A young black guy getting a gun because he FEARS crime would not to me be an acceptable excuse whereas Martin was a multiple victim of burglary before he snapped and took the law into his own hands. If there was a young black guy who had repeatedly been the victim of crime and saw the police doing nothing about his situation and he then got a gun and shot a robber then yeah I would be understanding but someone buying a gun out of paranoia or FEAR of crime and then shooting a mugger would get less sympathy from me.
-
Coalition programme
It depends, if it was a young guy probably not, infact certainly not, if it was an older Trevor McDonald type of black guy who was continually burgled by drug addicts and then in despair bought a gun and shot one then I think there would be a fair bit of sympathy and campaign, The Scum much as I hate the "paper" were the leaders in the outrage about the asian guy with the cricket bat being jailed and also gave the suspected killers of Stephen Lawrence a hard time.

Depends on the circumstances, if I catch a chav vandalising my car I don't have the right to use my hunting knife on him, that would be disproportionate but if someone came into my house, tortured me and I broke free when he leave and beat the $h!t out of him with a cricket bat then that is understandable IMHO, each case should be judged on the circumstances, in the case of the asian guy with the cricket bat he should not have been near the inside of a courtroom. Martin should have been charged with possession of firearms offences and punished accordingly but again I don't think he should have faced trial for murder

I sure love that bit about time it was bought in B) In general I can live with that document, there is a lot of wishy washy stuff in it that is a sell out to true conservatism but there is also a good deal of common sense ideas proposed I await Gideon's budget but I am braced for tax rises

Miners had a chance to buy their pits, several in Nottinghamshire and I think Derbyshire did and ran them as going concerns, profitable and productive mines were spared by McGregor too

That is through the EU, the common agricultural policy where farmers are paid not to produce stuff, it is not a UK government specific thing it is EU wide, if I am wrong someone feel free to correct me but that is my understanding of the situation

UK General Election 2010 thread
They did, they created enterprise zones in places like South Wales and the North East, companies like Nissan, Sony to name but a few set up factories in those areas Not every area did well, course not, it is physically impossible for a government to please every single region and town in a country
